Asphalt Shingles Market Size (2026): US Shipments, Prices and Producers

By The Roofing Brief Team. Last reviewed: October 2026.

The US asphalt shingles market is worth about $10 billion to $12 billion a year at the factory gate. The hard number comes from the 2022 Economic Census: US plants shipped $9.99 billion of asphalt shingles that year, and 86.3 percent of that value was laminated (architectural) product. Volume is counted separately by the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), which reported 154.5 million squares shipped in the United States in 2025, down 10.3 percent from 2024.

This report is the asphalt-shingle-specific companion to our cross-material roofing materials market share report. It covers shipments, prices, producers, employment and trade, and it uses federal statistics and company filings first. Paid market research estimates appear only as attributed third-party figures, and the section on vendor estimates explains why they cannot be reconciled with the Census count. Underlayment, the layer beneath the shingles, is sized separately in our roofing underlayment market size report.

Key numbers at a glance

These are the figures most people come to this page for. Every row names its source and year. Rows labeled “Roofing Brief estimate” are our own arithmetic, shown in full in the original synthesis section below.

Executive summary

  • US manufacturers shipped $9,989 million of asphalt shingles in 2022: $8,618 million of laminated or multilayered shingles and $1,372 million of strip (three-tab) shingles (US Census Bureau, 2022 Economic Census).
  • The full asphalt shingle and coating materials industry (NAICS 324122) shipped $17.47 billion in 2024, up from $10.92 billion in 2018. That is 60.0 percent nominal growth but only 10.3 percent after removing the industry’s own price inflation (Roofing Brief calculation from Census and BLS data).
  • ARMA reported 154,457,819 squares of US shingle shipments in 2025, down 10.3 percent from 172,150,867 squares in 2024. The first half of 2026 was down a further 4.7 percent.
  • Producer prices kept rising while volume fell. The BLS industry index rose 4.7 percent in the year to August 2026 (preliminary), above the 3.4 percent rise in the Consumer Price Index over the same months.
  • The four largest firms shipped 66.9 percent of industry value in 2022, and the eight largest shipped 83.7 percent (Census concentration tables).
  • Every global “asphalt shingles market” figure we could verify from a research vendor ($5.74 billion to $8.8 billion) is smaller than the Census count of US shingle shipments alone.
  • Trade is a small, two-way US and Canada flow. US imports under HS 6807.90 were $311 million in 2024, 99 percent from Canada (UN Comtrade).

Key findings

  1. Laminated shingles dominate value: $8,617,605 thousand of laminated or multilayered shingles versus $1,371,569 thousand of strip shingles shipped in 2022, from 54 and 24 establishments respectively (US Census Bureau, 2022 Economic Census, ECNNAPCSPRD2022).
  2. The NAICS 324122 industry had 72 firms, 165 establishments, 10,358 employees and $14.95 billion of shipments in 2022 (US Census Bureau, 2022 Economic Census, EC2231BASIC).
  3. Industry shipments reached $16.16 billion in 2023 and $17.47 billion in 2024, with employment of 10,582 and 10,965 (US Census Bureau, AIES 2023 and 2024).
  4. Asphalt was the largest input: $3.76 billion of asphalt paving, roofing and saturated materials consumed in 2022, 52.0 percent of all materials consumed. Roofing granules cost $1.01 billion and glass products $0.81 billion (Census materials consumed, 2022).
  5. ARMA’s US shingle shipments were 161.4 million squares in 2020, 169.2 million in 2021, 157.7 million in 2022, 168.7 million in 2023, 172.2 million in 2024 and 154.5 million in 2025 (ARMA fourth quarter summaries).
  6. Owens Corning puts the 2025 US asphalt shingle market at 143 million squares excluding component shingles, and 154 million including them, citing ARMA and its own estimates (Owens Corning investor presentation, May 2026).
  7. Owens Corning’s Roofing segment net sales fell 4 percent to $4,437 million in 2025, with volumes down about 7 percent. The company describes itself as the second largest US producer of asphalt roofing shingles (Owens Corning 2025 Form 10-K).
  8. The BLS producer price index for asphalt shingle and coating materials averaged 355.549 in 2025, up 229.2 percent since 2000, while the CPI rose 87.0 percent over the same period (BLS, Roofing Brief calculation).
  9. The producer price index for asphalt (WPU058102), the main raw material, was 16.4 percent higher in August 2026 than in August 2025 (BLS, preliminary).
  10. BLS counted 358 establishments and 13,861 jobs in NAICS 324122 in 2025, at an average annual pay of $105,706 (BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages).
  11. Texas shipped the most value in 2022 ($2.16 billion), followed by Ohio ($1.55 billion) and California ($1.22 billion) (2022 Economic Census, state data).
  12. US imports of asphalt articles under HS 6807.90, the subheading that holds roofing shingles, were $311.2 million in 2024, and $307.8 million of that came from Canada (UN Comtrade).

How big is the US asphalt shingles market?

The US asphalt shingles market was $9.99 billion in 2022, measured as the value manufacturers shipped from their plants. That is the most recent complete federal count. Applying ARMA volume and BLS price changes to the 2022 base gives a Roofing Brief estimate of about $11.7 billion for 2024 and $10.6 billion for 2025. Installed spending is several times larger because it adds labor, underlayment, tear-off and contractor margin.

The 2022 Economic Census breaks NAICS 324122 shipments into product lines. Shingles are only part of the industry: the same plants and firms also make roll roofing, cap sheets, felts, modified bitumen and roof coatings. The table separates them.

Product line (NAPCS 2022) Establishments Shipments ($ millions) Share of industry shipments ($14.95 billion) Source

Shares are Roofing Brief calculations against the $14.95 billion industry total; the remaining 23.9 percent sits in withheld product lines, resales and other receipts. Census value of shipments is measured at the plant, before freight and distributor markups. Every dollar of asphalt shingle shipments in the 2022 product file came from establishments classified in NAICS 324122, so the industry is the whole US production base for this product.

Asphalt shingle shipments by year: the federal series

Industry shipments for NAICS 324122 grew from $10.92 billion in 2018 to $17.47 billion in 2024, according to the Census Bureau. Most of that growth was price, not volume. Deflating each year by the industry’s own producer price index leaves real growth of 10.3 percent over six years, or 1.65 percent a year compounded, against 8.14 percent a year in nominal dollars.

Inflation-adjusted columns are Roofing Brief calculations: shipments multiplied by the 2024 index and divided by that year’s index. Two cautions apply. The Census Bureau replaced the Annual Survey of Manufactures with the Annual Integrated Economic Survey starting with 2023 data, so 2023 and 2024 come from a different survey than 2018 to 2021. AIES reports the industry’s “sales, value of shipments, or revenue” with coefficients of variation of 1.7 percent (2023) and 1.4 percent (2024). Employment in the Census series is a pay-period count, not the annual average BLS uses, so the two employment figures in this report do not match.

Asphalt shingle shipments in squares: ARMA’s volume count

ARMA reported 154,457,819 squares of US asphalt shingle shipments in 2025, down 10.3 percent from 172,150,867 squares in 2024. A square covers 100 square feet of roof. ARMA’s data is collected from participating manufacturers by a third party, Industry Insights, and the association publishes a free quarterly summary; the full report costs non-members $10,000 a year.

Each annual figure is taken from the most recent ARMA release that reports it, because ARMA revises prior-year totals. Year-over-year changes for 2022 and 2024 are Roofing Brief calculations across two releases, so small differences from ARMA’s own percentages are possible.

Why Owens Corning’s market figure is lower than ARMA’s

Owens Corning’s “US asphalt shingle market” excludes component shingles such as hip and ridge caps and starter strips, which ARMA reports as “individual shingles.” With components added back, the company’s series matches ARMA almost exactly: 172 million squares in 2024 and 154 million in 2025. The 11 to 13 million square gap is components, not a disagreement about demand.

Re-roofing versus new construction demand

Replacement drives the asphalt shingle market. In Owens Corning’s 2025 breakdown of the US market excluding components, new construction was 16 percent of squares, repair (planned re-roofing) 55 percent and weather-driven replacement 29 percent. Storm years move the total: weather demand was 34 to 35 percent of the market in 2023 and 2024, then fell back in 2025.

Year New construction Repair (re-roof) Weather Source
2015 to 2020 average 16% 55% 29% Owens Corning, May 2026 presentation

2024 16% 50% 34% Owens Corning, May 2026 presentation
2025 16% 55% 29% Owens Corning, May 2026 presentation

The split is a company estimate built on ARMA data, not a federal statistic, so treat it as Tier 2. It explains why shipments fell in 2025 even with housing starts broadly flat: the weather share dropped about 5 percentage points from 2024. Asphalt shingle prices and price history

Asphalt shingles are going up in price at the producer level. The BLS index for the asphalt shingle and coating materials industry was 377.534 in August 2026, up 4.7 percent from August 2025 and up 8.3 percent from January 2026 (preliminary figures). The narrower index for prepared asphalt roofing and siding products, which includes shingles, rose 3.9 percent over the same twelve months.

Source: US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Producer Price Index and CPI-U (series CUUR0000SA0), not seasonally adjusted, retrieved from the BLS time-series database in October 2026. Index bases differ (June 1984 = 100 for the industry series, 1982 to 1984 = 100 for CPI), so compare percentage changes, not levels across columns. BLS no longer publishes a shingle-only index; the prepared roofing products series is the closest one.

The 2026 move tracks raw materials. The asphalt input index jumped from 210.2 in February 2026 to 326.5 in July before easing to 295.3 in August. Owens Corning’s second quarter 2026 filing cites input cost inflation of $19 million and higher delivery costs of $23 million in its Roofing segment. Our roofing material price and inflation index tracks these series against other roofing inputs, and our real roofing cost analysis deflates them back to 1990.

Is the asphalt shingle a commodity?

Asphalt shingles behave like a commodity in price but do not trade like one. We found no exchange-traded futures contract for shingles. Prices are set by manufacturer list-price announcements and distributor negotiation, and the public benchmarks are the BLS producer price indexes above. The underlying raw material, paving and roofing asphalt, is a refinery product whose own index (WPU058102) swings far more than finished shingle prices.

Who makes asphalt shingles in the US

A handful of manufacturers make most US asphalt shingles. Census reports that the four largest firms in NAICS 324122 shipped 66.9 percent of the industry’s value in 2022, but it does not name them. The table below lists major producers using only each company’s own statements and filings. Private companies do not publish shingle revenue, so no source can rank them precisely.

How concentrated is asphalt shingle manufacturing?

Asphalt shingle manufacturing is moderately concentrated by federal antitrust yardsticks. The Census Bureau’s 2022 Herfindahl-Hirschman Index for the 50 largest firms in NAICS 324122 was 1,366. The 2023 Merger Guidelines treat markets above 1,800 as highly concentrated. Because the industry also includes coating and roll-roofing firms, concentration in shingles alone is likely higher than the industry figure.

Where asphalt shingles are made: state data

Texas, Ohio and California lead US asphalt shingle and coating production. In the 2022 Economic Census, Texas plants shipped $2.16 billion, Ohio $1.55 billion and California $1.22 billion. BLS establishment and job counts for 2025 show the same leaders, plus Florida and Georgia. Several states with known plants are suppressed in both sources to protect company confidentiality.

A location quotient above 1.0 means the state holds a larger share of this industry’s jobs than of all US private jobs. Census and BLS establishment counts differ because they use different frames: the Economic Census counted 165 manufacturing establishments in 2022, while BLS QCEW counted 358 unemployment-insurance establishments coded to NAICS 324122 in 2025.

Employment and wages in asphalt shingle manufacturing

Asphalt shingle and coating plants employed 13,861 people in 2025, an annual average from BLS, at an average annual pay of $105,706. Employment has grown every year since 2014, when the count was 10,376 jobs, a 33.6 percent increase. In March 2026 the industry employed 13,944 people, 0.9 percent more than a year earlier.

2024 321 13,632 $106,474 BLS QCEW
2025 358 13,861 $105,706 BLS QCEW

The establishment jump from 321 to 358 in 2025 continued into 2026, with 372 establishments in the first quarter (up 7.2 percent). New capacity announced by GAF in Kansas and Atlas in Iowa fits that pattern, but QCEW does not identify individual employers, so the link is an inference.

Imports and exports of asphalt shingles

The United States imports very few asphalt shingles relative to domestic output. Roofing shingles fall under US tariff line 6807.90.00.10, “articles of a kind used for roofing or siding,” with a 2.7 percent general duty. At the international 6-digit level (HS 6807.90), US imports were $311.2 million in 2024, and 99 percent came from Canada.

HS 6807.10 covers asphalt articles “in rolls,” such as roll roofing and membranes, not shingles; it is shown for contrast. HS 6807.90 also includes non-roofing asphalt articles, so the 6807.90 values are an upper bound for shingle trade. Canada supplied $307.8 million of 2024 imports, and Canada took $260.0 million of 2024 exports. 2025 annual data were not yet available in the public Comtrade preview when we retrieved it in October 2026.

Paid market research estimates, and why they disagree

Research vendors publish “asphalt shingles market” figures from $5.74 billion to $8.8 billion, all of them global. Each is smaller than the $9.99 billion of shingles the Census Bureau counted from US plants alone in 2022. On their public pages, none of these figures can be reconciled with the federal count, and none states a US-only dollar figure we could verify.

Pages reviewed October 9, 2026. Treat every row as a third-party vendor estimate with undisclosed methodology, not as a measured statistic.

Four mechanisms explain most of the disagreement:

  1. Scope. Some vendors may count only certain products or regions, or may model a “market” smaller than total shipments, but the public pages do not define it precisely enough to check.
  2. Base year. Stratview’s base is 2022, while others use 2024. Between those years US industry shipments rose from $14.95 billion to $17.47 billion in nominal terms.
  3. Price level. A model that applies an older price per square to current volume will understate value. BLS producer prices for this industry rose 26.1 percent from 2021 to 2025.
  4. Product definitions. Global Market Insights’ figure of about USD 4 billion for architectural shingles worldwide compares with $8.62 billion of US laminated shingle shipments in Census data for 2022. Global Market Insights’ key-player list includes Duro-Last, which Amrize’s 2025 Form 10-K describes as a manufacturer of PVC roofing systems.

Freedonia’s US volume forecast can be checked against ARMA. A 1.1 percent annual decline ending at 158.6 million squares in 2028 implies a base near 167.6 million squares, assuming a 2023 base year five years earlier (Roofing Brief calculation). That is close to ARMA’s 168.7 million squares for 2023, so Freedonia’s volume basis appears consistent with ARMA’s.

Original synthesis: Roofing Brief calculations

Everything in this section is our own arithmetic on the public inputs cited above. None of it is a published statistic. Inputs and limitations are stated for each calculation.

Calculation 1: the factory-gate value of a square of shingles

US plants shipped $9,989.2 million of shingles in 2022 (Census) against 157,749,481 squares (ARMA, including component shingles). Dividing gives an average factory-gate value of about $63.32 per square in 2022. Census product lines include individual shingles, so ARMA’s count with components is the matching denominator.

For scale, our 2026 roofing cost report uses $5 to $8 per square foot installed for architectural shingles, or $500 to $800 per square. On those figures, the shingles themselves leave the factory at roughly 8 to 13 percent of the installed price, before distributor margin, freight, underlayment, labor and tear-off. Limitations: the two figures are from different years (2022 and 2026), and the ratio is illustrative, not a cost breakdown.

Calculation 2: estimated shingle shipment value for 2023 to 2025

Census has not published shingle product lines after 2022. We rolled the 2022 base forward with ARMA volume and the BLS prepared roofing products price index (PCU3241223241222):

  1. Start with $9,989.2 million of shingle shipments in 2022.
  2. Multiply by the ratio of ARMA squares (2024: 172,150,867; 2022: 157,749,481), which is 1.0913.
  3. Multiply by the ratio of annual price indexes (2024: 357.55; 2022: 333.94), which is 1.0707.
  4. The result is about $11.67 billion for 2024.
  5. Repeat with 2025 volume (down 10.3 percent) and price (up 1.4 percent) to get about $10.62 billion for 2025. The same method gives about $11.09 billion for 2023.

A second method cross-checks the 2024 figure. Shingles were 66.8 percent of industry shipments in 2022; applying that share to the AIES 2024 industry total of $17.47 billion also gives about $11.67 billion. Limitations: product mix, the laminated share and the index’s coverage of non-shingle products can all shift the result, and ARMA’s panel does not include every manufacturer.

Calculation 3: real growth versus price growth

Industry shipments rose 60.0 percent from 2018 to 2024, and the industry’s producer price index rose 45.0 percent. Dividing one by the other leaves 10.3 percent real growth, or 1.65 percent a year compounded. Over the same period shipments per employee rose from $1.08 million to $1.59 million in nominal dollars. Limitation: the industry index includes coatings and roll roofing, so it is a proxy for shingle prices, not a direct measure.

Calculation 4: how much of the price rise beat inflation

Window Industry PPI change CPI-U change Real change (PPI relative to CPI) PPI compound annual rate
2000 to 2025 +229.2% +87.0% +76.1% 4.88%
2015 to 2025 +53.6% +35.8% +13.1% 4.38%
2019 to 2025 +41.4% +25.9% +12.3% 5.94%
2022 to 2025 +8.0% +10.0% -1.8% 2.60%
2024 to 2025 +1.4% +2.6% -1.2% 1.36%

Annual averages of BLS series PCU324122324122 and CUUR0000SA0; Roofing Brief calculations. The pattern is a step-up in 2021 and 2022, when the industry index rose 10.3 percent and 16.7 percent, followed by three years of price gains below general inflation. The preliminary 2026 data point to a renewed rise.

Calculation 5: input cost and trade exposure

Asphalt cost $3.76 billion in 2022, equal to 52.0 percent of all materials consumed and 25.2 percent of shipment value (Census materials consumed). Roofing granules were 14.0 percent of materials and glass products, mainly fiberglass mat, 11.2 percent. Imports under HS 6807.90 in 2024 ($311.2 million) equal 2.7 percent of our estimated 2024 shingle shipment value. Limitation: the import figure includes non-shingle articles, so true import penetration is lower.

Is there a roof shingle shortage?

National data do not show a production shortage of asphalt shingles in 2025 or 2026. ARMA shipments fell 10.3 percent in 2025 and 4.7 percent in the first half of 2026, Owens Corning reported production downtime in its second quarter 2026 filing, and manufacturers have announced new capacity. Local back orders on specific colors or lines can still happen, and our roofing material lead times report covers distributor-level delays.

Prices and availability are separate questions. Producer prices rose in 2026 because asphalt and delivery costs rose, not because demand outran supply. A shortage would normally show up as rising shipments that cannot keep pace with orders; the federal and trade data show the reverse.

Methodology

We started from federal data that measure production directly: the 2022 Economic Census (industry, product line, state, materials consumed and concentration files), the Annual Survey of Manufactures benchmark series for 2018 to 2021, and the Annual Integrated Economic Survey for 2023 and 2024, all downloaded as flat files from www2.census.gov. Price data are BLS Producer Price Index and CPI series from the BLS time-series database. Employment is BLS QCEW, private ownership, national and state files.

Volume comes from ARMA’s own quarterly summary tables, read from the association’s press releases rather than trade-press retellings. Company data come from Owens Corning’s 2025 Form 10-K and second quarter 2026 Form 10-Q, Amrize’s 2025 Form 10-K, an Owens Corning investor presentation, and manufacturer and parent-company websites and press releases. Trade data are from UN Comtrade for reporter United States, with tariff line descriptions from the USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule.

Where sources conflicted, we preferred the federal count, then the trade association, then company filings, then vendor pages. Revised figures replaced earlier ones. Values Census withheld for confidentiality are shown as withheld, never estimated. Every derived number is labeled as a Roofing Brief calculation or estimate. Data were retrieved October 9, 2026.

Data limitations

  • Census shingle product lines exist only for 2022 in the current economic census cycle; later shingle values on this page are estimates.
  • NAICS 324122 includes coatings, felts and roll roofing, so industry totals overstate the shingle market by about one third.
  • AIES replaced the ASM, creating a survey break between 2021 and 2023.
  • ARMA data come from participating manufacturers and are revised; ARMA does not disclose panel coverage in its free summary.
  • The re-roof, weather and new construction split is an Owens Corning estimate.
  • PPI values for May to August 2026 are preliminary and may be revised.
  • HS 6807.90 trade includes non-shingle asphalt articles.
  • Private manufacturers do not publish shingle revenue, so company market shares cannot be computed from public data.

Most quotable statistics

  • US plants shipped $9.99 billion of asphalt shingles in 2022, 86.3 percent of it laminated (US Census Bureau, 2022 Economic Census).
  • US asphalt shingle shipments fell 10.3 percent in 2025 to 154,457,819 squares (ARMA).
  • The four largest firms shipped 66.9 percent of US asphalt shingle and coating industry value in 2022 (Census).
  • Producer prices for asphalt shingle and coating materials were 4.7 percent higher in August 2026 than a year earlier (BLS, preliminary).
  • Industry shipments grew 60.0 percent from 2018 to 2024, but only 10.3 percent after adjusting for the industry’s own price inflation (Roofing Brief calculation).
  • Each square of shingles left US plants at an average value of about $63 in 2022 (Roofing Brief calculation from Census and ARMA).

Press summary

The US asphalt shingle market, measured at the factory gate, was $9.99 billion in 2022 according to the Census Bureau’s 2022 Economic Census, with laminated (architectural) shingles making up 86.3 percent of value. The Roofing Brief estimates the market at about $11.7 billion in 2024 and $10.6 billion in 2025, using ARMA volume and BLS producer prices to roll the Census base forward. Volume fell sharply in 2025: ARMA reported 154.5 million squares shipped, down 10.3 percent, after storm-driven replacement demand eased. Prices did not follow volume down. The BLS producer price index for asphalt shingle and coating materials rose 4.7 percent in the year to August 2026, as asphalt input prices climbed 16.4 percent. Manufacturing is concentrated, with the four largest firms shipping 66.9 percent of industry value. Every global market estimate published by research vendors that we could verify is smaller than the Census count of US shipments alone.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the US asphalt shingles market?

US plants shipped $9.99 billion of asphalt shingles in 2022, the latest year with a federal product count from the Census Bureau’s Economic Census. Rolling that base forward with ARMA volume and BLS prices gives a Roofing Brief estimate of about $11.7 billion for 2024 and $10.6 billion for 2025. Those are factory-gate values; installed spending is several times larger because it adds labor and other materials.

Are asphalt shingles going up in price?

Yes, at the producer level. The BLS producer price index for asphalt shingle and coating materials was 377.534 in August 2026, up 4.7 percent from August 2025 and 8.3 percent above January 2026, based on preliminary data. The asphalt input index rose 16.4 percent over the same twelve months. Retail and installed prices vary by market, brand and contractor.

Is there a roof shingle shortage?

National data do not show one. ARMA reported US shingle shipments down 10.3 percent in 2025 and down 4.7 percent in the first half of 2026, and manufacturers have announced new plants. Specific colors or product lines can still be back-ordered at local distributors, so check availability with your supplier or contractor before scheduling a job.

How many squares of asphalt shingles are sold in the US each year?

ARMA reported 154,457,819 squares of US shingle shipments in 2025 and 172,150,867 squares in 2024, including component shingles such as hip and ridge caps. Excluding components, Owens Corning puts the 2025 US market at 143 million squares. One square covers 100 square feet of roof.

Why do market research estimates of the asphalt shingles market disagree?

Vendor figures use different base years, regions, price assumptions and product definitions, and their public pages do not disclose enough to check them. The global estimates we verified range from $5.74 billion to $8.8 billion, yet the Census Bureau counted $9.99 billion of shingle shipments from US plants alone in 2022. Treat vendor numbers as attributed estimates.

Who are the largest asphalt shingle manufacturers in the US?

GAF, owned by privately held Standard Industries, describes itself as North America’s largest roofing manufacturer. Owens Corning’s 2025 Form 10-K calls its Roofing segment the second largest US producer of asphalt shingles. CertainTeed (Saint-Gobain), IKO, TAMKO, Atlas and Malarkey (Amrize) also operate US shingle plants. Census reports the four largest firms shipped 66.9 percent of industry value in 2022.

What share of asphalt shingles are architectural?

Laminated, or architectural, shingles were 86.3 percent of US asphalt shingle shipment value in 2022: $8.62 billion of laminated product against $1.37 billion of strip (three-tab) shingles, per the Census Bureau. Owens Corning’s May 2026 investor presentation states that 95 percent of roofing demand is now laminate shingles, a volume-based company figure.

How much shingle demand comes from re-roofing?

Most of it. Owens Corning estimates that in 2025, 55 percent of US asphalt shingle squares went to repair re-roofing and 29 percent to weather-driven replacement, leaving 16 percent for new construction. In the stormier years 2023 and 2024, weather replacement was 34 to 35 percent of the market.

Does the US import asphalt shingles?

Only in small amounts, mostly from Canada. US imports under HS 6807.90, the subheading that holds roofing shingles, were $311.2 million in 2024, with $307.8 million from Canada, per UN Comtrade. That is under 3 percent of our estimated US shingle shipment value. Shingles are tariff line 6807.90.00.10, with a 2.7 percent general duty.

What are the worst shingle brands to avoid?

Federal and industry data do not rank brands by quality, and this report does not either. Compare specific product lines on documented terms instead: ASTM D7158 wind class, UL 2218 impact rating, algae-resistance warranty and the written limited warranty. Installation quality and contractor certification often matter as much as the brand. Our 2026 shingle brand comparison report sets those terms side by side.
