What is corrugated plastic roofing?

Corrugated plastic roofing is a lightweight translucent panel made from polycarbonate, PVC, fiberglass (GRP), or polypropylene, pressed into a wavy or ribbed profile that stiffens the sheet and channels rainwater off it. A panel weighs a fraction of metal or fiber-cement, cuts with a fine-tooth circular saw blade or tin snips, and screws straight onto timber or metal purlins. Most buyers use it to cover a structure that needs light and shelter but not a full roof: a patio, carport, greenhouse, pergola, or shed.

Polycarbonate is the sheet to buy where anything can hit it. Corrugated profiles, and matching them to your existing roof

The single most common failure is buying a plastic panel whose profile does not nest with the metal or plastic sheet already on the building. Corrugated is not one shape. Measure the crown-to-crown pitch and the rib depth of the existing roof first, then buy a plastic panel in the same profile so the ribs overlap cleanly and the seam stays watertight.

Where corrugated plastic roofing works best

Corrugated plastic earns its place on structures that need daylight and rain cover rather than a sealed, insulated roof. It is not a house roof. It is a canopy material. These are the jobs it does well, roughly in order of how often homeowners buy it for them:

  • Patios and pergolas: clear or opal polycarbonate keeps rain off while passing light onto the deck.
  • Carports: impact-resistant polycarbonate shrugs off hail that dents metal.
  • Greenhouses and grow tunnels: diffused fiberglass or opal polycarbonate spreads even light over plants.
  • Sheds and workshops: a budget PVC or fiberglass sheet adds a daylight strip cheaply.
  • Walkway and RV canopies: lightweight panels span rafters without heavy framing.

What it is not built for: any roof you walk on, any low pitch that ponds water, or any application below about a 5-degree slope. Plastic corrugate needs fall to shed water and is easily cracked underfoot, so treat it as a cover, not a deck.

How do you install corrugated plastic roofing?

Corrugated plastic installs onto purlins spaced roughly 24 inches on center (tighter, near 16 inches, for greenhouses or snow load). You fasten through the crown of the rib, never the valley, using screws with sealing washers, and you leave the sheet room to expand. Rushing the fastening is what cracks panels and lets leaks start. Work in this order:

  1. Set purlin spacing. Support the panel every 24 inches or as the manufacturer specs; reduce to 16 inches under snow or foot-traffic risk from cleaning.
  2. Pre-drill oversized holes. Drill fastener holes about 1/8 inch larger than the screw shank so the sheet can move as it heats and cools. Plastic expands far more than metal.
  3. Screw through the crown. Drive screws with EPDM-washered heads through the top of the rib, not the valley, so water never sits at a penetration.
  4. Do not overtighten. Snug the washer until it just seats. Crushing it star-cracks the panel around the hole.
  5. Lap the sides by one corrugation. Overlap adjoining sheets a full rib (1.5 ribs in high wind) on the downwind side.
  6. End-lap 6 to 8 inches. Where panels meet up-slope, overlap 6 to 8 inches and seal with the maker’s tape or lap sealant.
  7. Add foam closure strips. Fit profiled foam closures at the eave and ridge to block wind-driven rain, insects, and birds.
  8. Overhang the eave. Run the sheet 1.5 to 2 inches past the fascia into the gutter so runoff drops clean.

How much does corrugated plastic roofing cost?

Corrugated plastic roofing runs about $0.70 to $3.00 per square foot for the panel alone in 2026, driven mostly by material.
