A standing seam metal roof is a concealed-fastener system where panels lock together at raised vertical seams that rise above the water plane, and clips beneath those seams attach the roof to the deck. The seams are either snapped together (mechanical snap-lock) or folded closed on site with a seaming machine.

Panels are usually 24 or 22 gauge steel, or aluminum in coastal zones, finished with a PVDF (Kynar 500) coating. Because the clips let the metal expand and contract with temperature swings, standing seam handles thermal movement without loosening. Panels are typically 26 or 29 gauge steel, thinner and less expensive than standing seam stock. Installation is fast because crews simply lay panels and drive screws through the flats or ribs.
