IRC roof deck fastening requirements sit in Table R602.3(1), the fastener schedule in the wall construction chapter, not in Chapter 9 where most people go looking for roofing rules. For wood structural panel roof sheathing, the 2021 IRC calls for 8d common nails (2 1/2 inches by 0.131 inch) or RSRS-01 ring shank nails (2 3/8 inches by 0.113 inch), spaced 6 inches on center at supported panel edges and 6 inches on center at intermediate supports, tightening to 4 inches on center near roof edges, ridges and gable ends in high wind conditions.
That field spacing is the number most nailing charts still get wrong. The widely repeated “6 and 12” pattern was correct through the 2015 IRC and is now obsolete for roof sheathing fastened with 8d common or RSRS-01 nails. Doubling the fasteners in the field of every panel is the cheapest structural upgrade available on a reroof, and it happens in the twenty minutes the deck is bare.

Where the IRC actually puts the roof deck fastening rules
The IRC splits roof deck requirements across three chapters, which is why the fastening schedule is so often missed. Chapter 8 governs what the deck is: Section R803.2.1 requires wood structural panels to conform to DOC PS 1, DOC PS 2, CSA O325 or CSA O437. Section R803.2.2 caps allowable spans at the values in Table R503.2.1.1(1) or APA E30. Section R803.2.3 then points the installation itself back to Table R602.3(1) in Chapter 6.
Chapter 9 covers the roof covering and the reroofing rules, and it says nothing about how the sheathing is nailed down. A contractor reading only Chapter 9 will never see the fastening schedule. If you are working out what deck material to specify in the first place, start with roof sheathing types and requirements before you get to the nail pattern.
Section R803.2.3 adds one dimension worth remembering on gable roofs: wood structural panel roof sheathing installed to Table R503.2.1.1(1) shall not cantilever more than 9 inches beyond the gable endwall unless it is supported by gable overhang framing.
The IRC Table R602.3(1) roof sheathing fastening schedule
Table R602.3(1) lists roof sheathing under the heading “Wood structural panels, subfloor, roof and interior wall sheathing to framing,” in items 31 through 33. The roof rows are separated from the subfloor and wall rows because the roof gets a different fastener and a tighter field spacing. Values below are the 2021 IRC as adopted in the 2022 California Residential Code and the 2022 Connecticut State Building Code.

Three details in that table do real work. Item 33 keeps the 12 inch field spacing because the 10d common nail carries more withdrawal capacity per fastener. Items 31 and 32 both accept the RSRS-01 ring shank nail as a direct alternative to the 8d common, at the same spacing, despite being shorter and thinner. And footnote c overrides everything else: nails shall be spaced not more than 6 inches on center at all supports where spans are 48 inches or greater.
Edge nailing versus field nailing: what the code counts as an edge
An edge in Table R602.3(1) is a panel edge supported by a framing member or by required blocking. Footnote h to the table states that spacing of fasteners on roof sheathing panel edges applies to panel edges supported by framing members and required blocking, and that blocking of roof sheathing panel edges perpendicular to the framing members need not be provided except where required elsewhere in the code.
The practical reading: on a standard roof with panels laid perpendicular to the rafters, the long edges land on rafters and get the 6 inch pattern. The short edges between rafters float unless the panel is clipped, tongue and groove, or blocked. Those unblocked edges are not “edges” for fastening purposes because there is nothing to nail into, which is exactly why they are the first place a panel lifts.
Field nailing means the intermediate supports, the rafters that cross the middle of a panel. On a 4 foot by 8 foot panel spanning three rafters at 24 inches on center, the middle rafter is the field. Under the 2021 IRC that middle line now carries the same 6 inch pattern as the edges, which is the single change worth checking your nailer settings against.
The 6 inch field spacing change most nailing charts missed
Roof sheathing field spacing changed from 12 inches to 6 inches on center at intermediate supports for 8d common and RSRS-01 nails in the 2021 IRC. Simpson Strong-Tie’s structural engineering blog attributes the change directly to the higher roof components and cladding loads introduced in ASCE 7-16. The 12 inch spacing was retained for 10d common and 8d deformed shank nails, which is why item 33 still reads 12.
The same rows carry forward into the 2024 North Carolina Residential Code, so this is not a one cycle anomaly. A jurisdiction on the 2015 or 2018 IRC will still enforce 12 inches in the field; a jurisdiction on the 2021 IRC or later will not. In January 2023 the City of Atwater, California issued a bulletin to roofing contractors specifically to warn that “the maximum field nailing for roof sheathing has been reduced,” which tells you how many crews were caught out by it.
For a 4 foot by 8 foot panel on rafters 24 inches on center, going from 12 inch to 6 inch field spacing adds roughly seven nails per panel on the interior support line. On a 30 square roof that is a few hundred extra nails and a fraction of a box.
Panel thickness and span: what has to be true before the pattern matters
A perfect nailing pattern in an underspecified panel buys very little. IRC Table R503.2.1.1(1) sets allowable spans and loads for wood structural panels used as roof sheathing, keyed to the span rating stamped on the panel rather than to thickness alone.

Note the 24/0 row. A 3/8 inch panel is code compliant at 24 inch rafter spacing only where the panel edges are supported by blocking, clips or tongue and groove. Without edge support it drops to a 20 inch span, which no standard framing layout provides. That is why 7/16 inch 24/16 sheathing became the residential default rather than 3/8 inch. The choice between panel types matters less than the span rating, though the two materials behave differently once wet: see OSB versus plywood roof decking.
High wind areas: where the schedule tightens to 4 inches on center
Footnote f to Table R602.3(1) is the high wind provision, and it is narrower than most people assume. It reads: for wood structural panel roof sheathing attached to gable end roof framing and to intermediate supports within 48 inches of roof edges and ridges, nails shall be spaced at 4 inches on center where the ultimate design wind speed is greater than 130 mph in Exposure B or greater than 110 mph in Exposure C.
Two things govern whether this applies to your job: the ultimate design wind speed from the IRC wind speed map for the site, and the exposure category. The same 120 mph site triggers the 4 inch pattern in open Exposure C terrain and does not trigger it in wooded or suburban Exposure B. The building official determines both, and coastal counties frequently amend the thresholds downward.
The zone is also specific: gable end framing, plus intermediate supports within 48 inches of roof edges and ridges. Perimeter and ridge zones get the tighter pattern; the interior field does not, because uplift pressure is not uniform across a roof. APA’s roof sheathing fastening data file, developed from full scale uplift testing against ASCE 7, follows the same logic and pushes to 3 inch field spacing in the corner and ridge zones at 150 mph.
Ring shank nails: what RSRS-01 is and where it is now required
RSRS-01 is a Roof Sheathing Ring Shank nail meeting the specifications in ASTM F1667, per footnote b to Table R602.3(1). It is the only ring shank nail the IRC names by classification, and it is listed as a permitted alternative to the 8d common for roof sheathing in items 31 and 32 at the same 6 inch spacing.
The Florida Building Code goes further and defines the geometry when the nail is used as a retrofit fastener: 0.113 inch nominal shank diameter, ring diameter at least 0.012 inch greater than the shank, 16 to 20 rings per inch, minimum 0.280 inch full round head, ring shank extending at least 1 1/2 inches from the tip, and minimum 2 1/4 inch length. Those numbers are the working definition of a ring shank deck nail even outside Florida.
The point of the ring shank is withdrawal resistance rather than shear. Rings mechanically lock into the wood fibers so the nail resists being pulled straight out under uplift, which is the failure mode that peels decks. The same principle drives fastener selection on metal systems, where metal roof screw pull-out strength is governed by thread engagement into the substrate. Head diameter matters as much as shank: IBHS will not accept clipped-head ring shank nails for wood structural panel roof sheathing at all, because the smaller head pulls through the panel. The reroofing trigger: when tearing off forces a deck re-nail
The base IRC does not require you to re-nail an existing deck at reroof. Sections R908.1 through R908.5 of the 2021 IRC cover roof replacement, roof recover and reinstallation of materials, and none of them contain a deck refastening mandate. The trigger comes from state amendments, and Florida wrote the model.
Florida Building Code, Residential Section R908.7 (“Wind mitigation”) and its counterpart at Section 706.7 of the Florida Building Code, Existing Building require that where a roof covering on an existing structure with a sawn lumber, wood plank or wood structural panel roof deck is removed and replaced, the roof decking attachment be brought up to Section R908.7.1 and a secondary water barrier be provided. Section R908.7.1.2 then sets the supplemental fastening for wood structural panel decks.

Two Florida provisions widen the net. Section R908.1.1 limits repair, replacement or recovering to 25 percent of the total roof area or roof section in any 12 month period unless the entire roof system is brought into compliance, subject to an exception for systems already built to the 2007 or later Florida Building Code. And the 7th Edition (2020) Florida Building Code, Existing Building extended these mitigation provisions from site built single family dwellings to all buildings with wood roof decks, including apartments and offices.
Outside Florida, the strongest deck attachment standard is voluntary. The 2025 IBHS FORTIFIED Home Standard requires new wood structural panel roof sheathing to be attached with a minimum RSRS-01 nail, 0.113 inch diameter by 2 3/8 inches, at 4 inches on center maximum in all areas of the roof, with at least 1 5/8 inches of penetration into the truss or rafter. For an existing deck, FORTIFIED calls for re-nailing with additional 8d ring shank nails at 4 inches on center, with new and existing nails kept at least 2 inches apart and staggered at spacings of 3 inches or less to avoid splitting the framing. What actually fails inspection
Deck fastening violations cluster in a short list, and almost all of them come from a nailer setting or a habit rather than from ignorance of the table.
- Overdriven nails. A nail head sunk below the panel surface has lost most of its head bearing area, and head pull-through is the governing failure for thin OSB. Set gun pressure so the head sits flush.
- Nails missing the framing. Shiners are visible from the attic as nails protruding between rafters. They count for nothing and are the most common field failure on 24 inch framing.
- Field spacing carried over from the old schedule. Crews nailing 12 inches in the field on a jurisdiction enforcing the 2021 IRC or later will fail on items 31 and 32.
- Wrong nail on a roof row. A 6d common is permitted for 3/8 to 1/2 inch subfloor and wall sheathing in item 31 but not for the roof, where the row calls for 8d common or RSRS-01.
- Clipped head nails where the standard names full round head. Permitted in some IRC rows, rejected outright by FORTIFIED for wood structural panel roof sheathing.
- Ignoring footnote c. Where the span is 48 inches or greater, 6 inches on center applies at every support regardless of which row you are reading.
