Best Roofers in Flint, MI: 4 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

The four best roofers in Flint, MI, ranked on a published formula and verified individually against BBB, licence and manufacturer records. No paid placement.

Best Roofers in Flint, MI: 4 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of September 2026, the four highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Flint, MI metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Roofing and Beyond (93.9), BC Exteriors LLC (84.4), Michigan Exterior Pros (70.8), MI Roof Pro (66.9). Each holds a certification we verified on the manufacturer’s own register, every rating was corroborated elsewhere, and placement on this page is not for sale.

The Roofing Brief scored 4 certified roofing contractors serving the Flint metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top four individually to confirm its record. Michigan is one of the minority of states that licenses roofing properly, and the detail matters: the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs issues either a Residential Builder licence or a Maintenance and Alteration contractor licence, and the Maintenance and Alteration licence is granted by trade, so it has to specify roofing to cover your job. Genesee County’s certified pool is only four deep, which makes that licence check the most useful half hour you can spend here. Note too that the metro mean rating is a perfect 5.0, which sounds impressive and mostly reflects small review bases: read the counts, not just the stars.

What a Flint roof is up against

Genesee County’s storm file is short but it contains one very expensive day. Across the decade NOAA holds 18 hail reports, four of them two inches or larger, 68 severe wind reports and six tornadoes, with $22.2 million in reported property damage, most of it concentrated rather than spread. The largest hail fell at Davison on 20 July 2023 at 2.75 inches, and an EF2 tornado crossed Grand Blanc on 28 February 2024, an unusually early date for a Michigan tornado.

Hail of that size bruises asphalt shingles, so a UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated product is worth pricing here even though the frequency is low, and it is worth asking your insurer what credit it earns. The more common failure is wind at the edges: a squall line on 30 March 2025 drove severe gusts across southern Michigan, including Genesee County, which is the pattern to specify the fastening schedule against.

Winter decides how long the roof lasts. Repeated freeze and thaw builds ice at the eaves, and Michigan’s residential code requires ice-barrier underlayment in this part of the state. The rest of the answer is attic insulation and balanced ventilation that keep the deck cold, and gutters cleared before the first thaw. A quote that prices shingles and says nothing about ventilation has not addressed the local failure mode.

Permits and licences are both checkable here, so check both. A full roof replacement needs a building permit from the City of Flint or from the relevant township or the county, and the permit brings an inspection. On the licence, ask for the LARA number and confirm the classification covers roofing rather than assuming a builder’s licence does; the state lookup will tell you in a minute.

1. Roofing and Beyond — TRB Score 93.9

Roofing and Beyond is based in Clarkston, MI, in business since 2012, led by Justin Trigalet, BBB accredited since 24 August 2018, A+ rating, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: President’s Club (GAF), GAF President’s Club award winner and Master Elite certification, stated on the company’s own website https://roofingandbeyond.com/, Google Guaranteed, stated on the company’s own website https://roofingandbeyond.com/. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

  • The BBB profile shows an A+ rating, accreditation since 24 August 2018, and a business start date of 1 March 2015 at 7150 Dixie Hwy Ste 6, Clarkston, MI 48346.. Better Business Bureau, Clarkston
  • The Houzz profile names Justin Trigalet as the owner and a Clarkston resident active in daily operations, lists licence number 2101206435, and lists asphalt shingle roofing, roof flashing, roof inspection, skylight installation, gutters and insulation work.. Houzz professional profile

What they actually do. Residential roof replacement and repair in Oakland County, with gutters and gutter guards, Velux skylights, chimney repair and attic insulation as attached trades.

Why it ranks here. President’s Club certification, 149 reviews at a clean 5.0, and a Michigan residential builder licence number published on its own site, which is the check this state makes worth doing.

Best fit for: Genesee and north Oakland County homeowners who want the top tier and a checkable licence number.

What we would want clarified. Two different Michigan licence numbers appear in its own published listings: 2102208951 on its website and 2101206435 on its Houzz profile, and neither was checked against the LARA licence lookup. Its ‘since 2012’ claim also does not match the 1 March 2015 business start date on its BBB profile, and the office is in Clarkston, roughly 24 miles from Flint. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (248) 657-4144, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

2. BC Exteriors LLC — TRB Score 84.4

BC Exteriors LLC is based in Fenton, MI, in business since 2022, led by Chad Beard, BBB a+ rating; the BBB profile, read on 27 September 2026, showed the business as not BBB accredited, with a business start date of 3 May 2022 and zero complaints closed in the last three years, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: Master Elite (GAF), GAF Golden Pledge limited warranty provider (50-year material, 25-year workmanship), stated on the company’s own website https://bcexteriors.com/. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

Press release carried by FinancialContent, 18 September 2026

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing including GAF solar shingles, plus siding, gutters and gutter guards, from a Fenton base serving Genesee, Livingston and Oakland county towns.

Why it ranks here. Master Elite certification with 115 registry reviews at a clean 5.0, and GAF Golden Pledge warranty capability stated on its own site.

Best fit for: Homeowners who want the enhanced manufacturer warranty that only higher-tier contractors can register.

What we would want clarified. The firm publishes no Michigan residential builder or maintenance-and-alteration licence number on its website or BBB profile, only a general ‘licensed and insured’ claim, so the roofing trade designation could not be checked. It is also the second-youngest firm here (business start 3 May 2022), its BBB profile carries zero customer reviews, and it is filed with the BBB under a Linden address while it markets a Fenton one. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

3. Michigan Exterior Pros — TRB Score 70.8

Michigan Exterior Pros is based in Lapeer, MI, in business since 2022, led by Dakota Krystofick, BBB accredited since 22 August 2023, A+ rating, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

  • The BBB profile lists Dakota Krystofick as co-owner, an A+ rating, accreditation since 22 August 2023, and a business start date of 9 August 2022 at 324 W Nepessing St, Lapeer, MI 48446.. Better Business Bureau, Lapeer
  • The chamber directory lists Michigan Exterior Pros at 324 W. Nepessing, Lapeer, MI 48446 with Dakota Krystofick as key contact, describing the firm as specialising in roofing, siding and building projects.. Lapeer Area Chamber of Commerce member listing

What they actually do. Residential exterior contractor covering roofing, siding and gutters including full replacements, repairs and storm-damage restoration, for Lapeer County and the counties around it.

Why it ranks here. A clean 5.0 across 87 registry reviews and a Michigan residential builder licence number published on the homepage.

Best fit for: Lapeer County homeowners, and anyone who wants the licence number before the first visit.

What we would want clarified. The website advertises 30+ years of experience while the company’s own BBB business start date is 9 August 2022, so the claim belongs to the people rather than the firm. The published service menu is extremely broad (pole barns, finished basements, painting, power washing) rather than roofing-specialised, and the builder licence number 262300594 was not checked against the LARA lookup. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (810) 834-8206, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

4. MI Roof Pro — TRB Score 66.9

MI Roof Pro is based in Clarkston, MI, in business since 2024, led by Reese Pierson, BBB accredited since 14 March 2025, A rating, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

  • GAF lists MI Roof Pro as a GAF-certified residential roofing contractor in Clarkston, Michigan.. GAF contractor directory

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roof installation, replacement, repair and inspection, marketed through city-specific landing sites including one for Clarkston.

Why it ranks here. A clean 5.0 across 38 registry reviews from the newest business ranked here, BBB accredited in March 2025.

Best fit for: Homeowners comfortable with a short trading history who will check the licence themselves.

What we would want clarified. The newest firm in this group, with a business start date of 29 May 2024, an A rather than A+ BBB rating, and only 38 GAF reviews. It publishes no Michigan licence number that could be found, and its own website was unreachable behind a bot challenge, so none of its self-described credentials could be read first-hand; the address on its BBB profile is in West Bloomfield, not Clarkston. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (231) 888-7663, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

What 2.75 inch hail does to a Flint roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Flint, MI statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 18 hail reports, 68 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 6 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $22.2 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Flint in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
20 July 2023 2.75 in Davison Genesee
20 July 2023 2.5 in Davison Genesee
20 July 2023 2.5 in Davison Genesee
28 August 2020 2.0 in Flushing Genesee
7 July 2017 1.75 in Elmcrest Genesee
20 July 2023 1.75 in Davison Genesee

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 20 July 2023 near Davison, measured at 2.75 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 61 knots, about 70 mph, near Burton on 30 March 2025. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 6 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Grand Blanc on 28 February 2024.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 30 March 2025 event near Genesee, reproduced verbatim:

An early season squall line developed over Illinois on the afternoon of March 30, 2025, then tracked northeast across southern Lower Michigan during the late afternoon and evening hours. This line of storms packed a punch of severe to significant winds over much of the state with wind gusts measured between 60 and 70 mph. Pockets of locally higher gusts were also observed, including a gust of 96 mph at the Jackson County Airport. Two weak, short lived tornadoes also developed. There were numerous reports of uprooted trees and property damage, and at least 35,000 customers were left without power according to local news reports. Parts of Southeast Michigan that were particularly hard hit…

That is what the specification has to anticipate here, written up by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in July (27), August (19), June (13). The worst years on record were 2020 (16), 2025 (16), 2019 (14). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Flint, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Flint. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

Three things to confirm before work starts in Flint

Licensing is required in MI. Michigan requires a licence from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for any residential construction, alteration or repair costing more than $600 in combined labour and materials. Roofing-only contractors fall under the Maintenance and Alteration Contractor classification with the roofing speciality.

Applicants must complete a 60-hour state-approved prelicensure course and pass the PSI Residential Builder or Maintenance and Alteration Contractor exam with the roofing speciality. A Residential Builder licence covers roofing as part of broader construction; a Maintenance and Alteration licence is limited to repairs and non-structural changes such as a roof replacement.

Check here: Michigan LARA licence verification. The $600 threshold is low enough that essentially every roofing job in Michigan requires a licensed contractor. There is no meaningful unlicensed exemption.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Flint rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Flint, MI pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 4 certified contractors, of whom 1 hold President’s Club standing and 1 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 5.0. The top four were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. The findings are printed above whether they flatter the contractor or not, and nobody paid to appear.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. What was the worst hailstorm in Flint in the last ten years?

The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Flint, MI statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 2.75 inches, reported near Davison on 20 July 2023. Is Flint a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Michigan is one of the minority of states that licenses roofing properly, and the detail matters: the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs issues either a Residential Builder licence or a Maintenance and Alteration contractor licence, and the Maintenance and Alteration licence is granted by trade, so it has to specify roofing to cover your job. Note too that the metro mean rating is a perfect 5.0, which sounds impressive and mostly reflects small review bases: read the counts, not just the stars.

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Flint?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Flint, MI statistical area logged 68 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 15 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
