Short answer: As of October 2026, the three highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Auburn-Opelika, AL metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Superior Roofing Company (88.2), Dunning Roofing (75.9), Triple B Construction LLC (63.1). All of them carry a verifiable manufacturer certification, every rating here was cross-checked against an independent record, and no money changed hands for any placement.
The Roofing Brief scored 3 certified roofing contractors serving the Auburn metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top three individually to confirm its record. Auburn-Opelika’s defining roof event was not hail but one tornado: the EF4 of 3 March 2019, which killed 23 people in Lee County. Otherwise the record is mild, with no hail of two inches in a decade. Alabama does license residential roofers, from $2,500, but with no exam: the licence is a bond and a local business licence. Three certified firms appear in the directory for the metro, and all three publish coverage of Auburn, so three are ranked; one is a roofing company with an Auburn office and BBB accreditation dating to 1983.
Wind, terrain and the Auburn housing stock
Alabama brings residential roofers inside its home builder law. Ala. Code 34-14A-2 sets the home builder threshold at $10,000 but includes a residential roofer when the job exceeds $2,500, and the Home Builders Licensure Board issues the roofers licence. There is no examination: the Board requires a current municipal or county business licence as a contractor and a $10,000 licence and permit bond naming the Board. So the licence proves a bond and a business registration, not competence, and the Board’s live licence search sits behind a captcha, so ask for the number and check it yourself.
Ala. Code 8-36-2 governs storm-claim contracts. You may cancel a roofing contract to be paid from insurance before midnight on the fifth business day after the insurer tells you in writing that all or part of the claim is not covered, the contract must contain that cancellation notice, the roofer may not demand payment inside the window except for emergency work you acknowledged, and a residential roofer may not represent or negotiate your claim. Alabama has no statute barring a roofer from waiving or rebating your deductible.
Inside the city, Auburn’s own permit guide lists roofing as requiring a permit and repeats the state’s $2,500 licence trigger. The city has enforced the 2021 International Residential Code with Alabama’s amendments since 1 January 2022. Lee County’s Board records show the licence law is prosecuted locally: in March 2025 an unlicensed builder was convicted in Lee County District Court and ordered to repay $90,813.29, though that case concerned home building rather than roofing.
The ordinary storm record is light for the Southeast. Across 2016 to 2025 Lee and Macon counties logged 28 hail reports, none of two inches and the largest 1.75 inches, and only 2 of 73 thunderstorm wind reports reached 58 knots. Tornadoes are the risk: 34 tornado segments in the decade, 22 of them EF0. Auburn’s housing is unusually young, with a median year built of 2001, and 46.9 percent of the city’s homes are rented, a reflection of the university.
The 3 best roofers in Auburn, AL
Scored 2026-10-05. The metro mean rating used as the Bayesian prior for Auburn is 4.867, across a pool of 3 certified contractors.

1. Superior Roofing Company — TRB Score 88.2
Superior Roofing Company is based in Auburn, AL, led by Founded by Greg Dykes, listed by BBB as owner; the company says his sons Cody, Dylan and Chad Dykes now own and run it, BBB accredited since 7 January 1983, A+ rating, no complaints in three years, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

| Adjusted rating | 39.2 | 40 |
| Review corpus depth | 15.0 | 15 |
| Metro proximity | 10.0 | 10 |
| Total | 88.2 | 100 |
Independently corroborated:
- Accredited since 7 January 1983 with an A+ rating and no complaints closed in three years; filed under the firm’s Phenix City office.. BBB business profile
- Offices in Auburn on North College Street, Phenix City and Columbus, Georgia, serving Auburn, Opelika, Phenix City and Smiths Station.. Company service areas page
What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing.
Why it ranks here. The clear leader: a perfect 5.0 across 282 reviews, Master Elite certification, an office on North College Street in downtown Auburn, and BBB accreditation since January 1983, the longest of any firm we checked in this batch. Founder Greg Dykes started the company as a teenager; it is now a second-generation family business.
Best fit for: Auburn and Opelika homeowners who want the longest track record in the market.
What we would want clarified. It runs offices across the Columbus, Georgia market as well, so ask which office will handle your job. Its founding year is 1982 by the company’s account and 1983 by BBB’s. We could not find it under this name on the Board’s 2021 roofers roster, so ask for its Alabama licence number and check it. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (334) 821-8411, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
2. Dunning Roofing — TRB Score 75.9
Dunning Roofing is based in Jacksons Gap, AL, led by Andrew Dunning per BBB; a sponsored article names the founder as Andrew McGreer, Not accredited; not rated; no complaints, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.
| Score component | Points | Max |
|---|---|---|
| Certification tier | 24 | 35 |
| Adjusted rating | 35.6 | 40 |
| Review corpus depth | 13.0 | 15 |
| Metro proximity | 3.3 | 10 |
| Total | 75.9 | 100 |
Independently corroborated:
- Not accredited and not rated, business start 2009, owner Andrew Dunning, no complaints.. BBB business profile
- Says it serves communities including Auburn, Opelika and Smiths Station in Lee County.. Company website
What they actually do. Residential roofing, centred on the Lake Martin area.
Why it ranks here. A 4.9 across 131 reviews with Master Elite certification, the second strongest record in the pool, and a website that names Auburn, Opelika and Smiths Station.
Best fit for: North Lee County and Lake Martin side addresses.
What we would want clarified. It is based in Jacksons Gap, Tallapoosa County, outside the metro and about 27 miles from Auburn, and its core market reads as Lake Martin. Sources conflict on its founding year, 2003 in a sponsored article and 2009 per BBB, and on its founder’s name. It is not BBB accredited. We did not find it on the Board’s 2021 roofers roster, so ask for its licence number. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (205) 383-9222, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
3. Triple B Construction LLC — TRB Score 63.1
Triple B Construction LLC is based in Auburn, AL, in business since 2005, led by Benjamin Bruce, owner; Bryant Bryers, general manager (BBB), BBB accredited since 23 October 2014, A+ rating, no complaints in three years, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.
Certifications held: Certified (GAF), Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.
| Score component | Points | Max |
|---|---|---|
| Certification tier | 12 | 35 |
| Adjusted rating | 32.4 | 40 |
| Review corpus depth | 8.7 | 15 |
| Metro proximity | 10.0 | 10 |
| Total | 63.1 | 100 |
Independently corroborated:
- Accredited since 23 October 2014 with an A+ rating, business start 1 March 2005, no complaints closed in three years; services listed as custom home building, remodelling, roofing and additions.. BBB business profile
- Listed as an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor at 625 Old Stage Rd, Auburn, one of only two network firms in Auburn or Opelika.. Owens Corning contractor locator
What they actually do. Custom home building, remodelling, roofing and exteriors.
Why it ranks here. An Auburn firm holding both GAF and Owens Corning credentials, BBB accredited since 2014 with no complaints, and describing itself as a licensed Alabama home builder, a licence that covers roofing.
Best fit for: Roofing combined with remodelling or an addition.
What we would want clarified. It is primarily a custom home builder, not a dedicated roofer, and has only 25 reviews, the thinnest base of the three. Its site claims 30 years against a 2005 start on BBB, and gives an Opelika address that differs from BBB’s. We could not verify its licence number. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (334) 524-6319, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
Other licensed roofers serving Auburn-Opelika
Three certified firms are ranked here. These three appear on the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board’s published roofers roster with Auburn or Opelika addresses. They are not scored and we are not recommending them; the roster we could read dates from May 2021, so confirm the licence is still current.
| Company | Verified credential |
|---|---|
| Preferred Roofing (Preferred Contractors, LLC) | Roofers licence 30278 on the Board’s roster, the same number the firm publishes; Owens Corning Preferred in Auburn; BBB accredited since 2019 at A+, trading since 2010. |
| All-V Roofing and Restoration, LLC | Roofers licence 30447 on the Board’s roster; on Opelika Road in Auburn; BBB accredited since 2015 at A+, no complaints closed in three years. |
| Doug Horn Roofing & Construction | Roofers licence 30044 on the Board’s roster as Doug Horn Roofing Company, LLC, Opelika; BBB not accredited and not rated. |

The 73 wind reports that shape an Auburn roof
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the Auburn-Opelika, AL statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 28 hail reports, 73 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 34 tornadoes. The database’s property-damage fields are left blank for most of these reports, so it carries no usable loss total for this metro and we do not quote one.

The biggest hail to fall on Auburn in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 April 2017 | 1.75 in | Smiths Station | Lee |
| 24 April 2021 | 1.75 in | Shorter | Macon |
| 30 December 2021 | 1.75 in | Smiths Station | Lee |
| 21 July 2018 | 1.5 in | Chewacla | Lee |
| 26 March 2023 | 1.5 in | Tysonville | Macon |
| 30 December 2021 | 1.5 in | Mitchell Xrd | Lee |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 5 April 2017 near Smiths Station, measured at 1.75 inches. That is ping-pong-ball sized, enough to bruise asphalt shingles and shorten a roof’s life without necessarily looking dramatic from the ground.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 59 knots, about 68 mph, near Notasulga on 12 April 2020. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 34 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF4 near Bupree on 3 March 2019.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 15 June 2017 event near Notasulga, reproduced verbatim:
Thunderstorms developed along a large and progressive outflow boundary that tracked southeast across all of central Alabama during the afternoon and early evening hours. The thunderstorms produced widespread wind damage.
That is the kind of damage a roof in this metro has to be specified against, described by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in April (24), June (22), August (22). The worst years on record were 2023 (29), 2017 (20), 2020 (17). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Auburn, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Auburn. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.
Beauregard, 3 March 2019
At 2:00 in the afternoon of 3 March 2019 a tornado touched down near Society Hill in Macon County and tracked 26.73 miles to Smiths Station in Lee County in 29 minutes. NWS Birmingham rated it EF4, with winds of 170 mph and a path up to 1,600 yards wide, nearly a mile. It killed 23 people and injured 90, all of the deaths in Lee County, around the community of Beauregard.
The survey narrative is specific about what failed. At peak intensity, just south of Lee County Roads 36 and 39, a well-anchored and constructed home was levelled, with debris swept from the foundation and the anchor bolts left in place. Two double-wide and a single-wide manufactured home were destroyed; further along the track the metal frames of two mobile homes could not be found. Nearer Smiths Station the narrative records roofing and siding torn from small homes that were not well constructed.
The same outbreak produced an EF2 from Carver Court to Society Hill in Macon County, 19 miles long, and an EF1 from Marvyn to Prince Crossroads in Lee County. Across the region NWS counted 40 tornadoes from the day’s supercells.
The storm record misleads on cost. NWS Birmingham entered zero property damage for nearly every event in the two counties, including the EF4, so the federal database totals only $1,000 of damage for the decade. We found no primary damage estimate for the 2019 tornado, and no building-code change adopted because of it, so we claim neither.
For a homeowner the lesson is about the rare event, not the routine one. Auburn’s hail and wind exposure is modest, which can make roof-to-wall connections and deck attachment seem academic. The 2019 track shows they are not, and a reroof that exposes the deck is the time to ask about them.

What to verify before an Auburn contractor starts
Licensing is required in AL. Alabama requires a residential roofer licence from the Home Builders Licensure Board. The board’s own application packet states that a residential roofer who contracts directly with a homeowner to perform residential roofing is required to hold a residential roofers licence when the total cost of the undertaking exceeds $2,500.
The board issues three residential licence types. An Unlimited licence carries full residential homebuilding authority and permits roofing without a separate roofer licence; a Limited licence covers a restricted scope; and a Roofers licence covers residential roofing only. Applicants must hold a current municipal or county business licence as a contractor and file a $10,000 licence and permit bond naming the board as obligee, which expires on 31 December and must be renewed annually alongside the licence. No exam is required for the Limited or Roofers licence.
Check here: Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board. Two things follow from how this licence works. Because it involves no competency exam, it evidences bonding and registration rather than skill, so manufacturer certification carries proportionally more weight in Alabama. And because the bond lapses every 31 December unless renewed, checking that the licence is current matters more here than in states with multi-year terms.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
The Auburn market behind this ranking
3 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Auburn-Opelika, AL statistical area, of which 0 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 438 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.867. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 206,006, a change of 6.26% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.

How these Auburn rankings were produced
Every contractor in the Auburn-Opelika, AL pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 3 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 2 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.867. The top three were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Good and bad findings are published together, and no contractor paid for a place here.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Last updated: October 2026. Scoring run: 2026-10-05. Corrections go to the editor and are actioned on verification.

Wind, by a wide margin. The Auburn-Opelika, AL statistical area logged 73 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 23 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
