Best Roofers in Bloomington, IN: 3 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

The three best roofers in Bloomington, IN, ranked on a published formula and verified individually against BBB, licence and manufacturer records. No paid placement.

Best Roofers in Bloomington, IN: 3 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the three highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Bloomington, IN metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Pritchett Brothers Roofing & Exteriors (67.7), Still Waters Roofing & Construction (59.6), Amish Roofers (51.1). Each holds a certification we verified on the manufacturer’s own register, every rating was corroborated elsewhere, and placement on this page is not for sale.

The Roofing Brief scored 3 certified roofing contractors serving the Bloomington metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top three individually to confirm its record. Bloomington is a university city of renters, 65 percent of homes, in a corner of Indiana that has taken three violent storm seasons in a row: the McCormick’s Creek EF3 in 2023, a 78 mph downburst across the city in 2024, and a long-track tornado that tore the roof off the Clear Creek post office in 2025. Neither Indiana nor Monroe County licenses roofers. Three certified firms appear in the directory and all three are ranked; two are based in Bedford, outside the metro, but publish Monroe County work.

Hail, codes and what they cost a Bloomington, IN homeowner

Indiana has no state roofing or general contractor licence, and Monroe County, which runs building services for the City of Bloomington under an agreement extended to January 2027, licenses only electricians and registers only plumbers. Bloomington’s own code has no roofer registration either. So there is no roofer register to check anywhere in the metro, and the homeowner’s protections are the contract, the contractor’s insurance and its record.

Monroe County requires a permit for construction, alteration or repair that affects structural elements or building systems, and says the rule does not reach cosmetic repairs or maintenance; the ordinance does not name reroofing, so ask the county whether your job needs one, and expect one where decking or structure is replaced. A residential alteration or repair permit costs a flat $50. The 2020 Indiana Residential Code is in force. Contractors the county licenses must carry $500,000 of liability cover naming the county.

Indiana’s storm-contract law, IC 24-5-11, bars a contractor from rebating your deductible or acting as your public adjuster, and lets you cancel until midnight on the third business day after the later of signing or the insurer’s written final decision.

Across 2016 to 2025 Monroe and Owen counties logged 42 hail reports, four of two inches or more, 72 thunderstorm wind reports and seven tornadoes, four of them in 2023 or 2025, with $11.4 million of recorded damage. The costliest storm was water: the June 2021 flash flood, $25 million in Monroe County alone. Bloomington’s housing is young for Indiana, with a median year built of 1985.

  • Logs 55 Bloomington jobs plus work in Ellettsville and Spencer, including an August 2026 Bloomington roof replacement.. Company project map

What they actually do. Residential roof replacement and repair, siding and gutters, storm restoration, historic and commercial roofing.

Why it ranks here. A second-generation family roofer dating to the 1960s, with Master Elite certification, a 4.6 across 91 reviews, a clean BBB record and a published project log of 55 Bloomington jobs; its historic work includes the West Baden Springs Hotel.

Best fit for: Older and historic homes, and full replacements with siding and gutters.

What we would want clarified. It is based in Bedford, Lawrence County, about 21 miles south and outside the metro, though its Bloomington project record is long. Its founding year is given as 1963, 1965 or 1969 depending on the source. It is not BBB accredited. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

2. Still Waters Roofing & Construction: TRB Score 59.6

Still Waters Roofing & Construction is based in Spencer, IN, led by Joseph and Lisa White, co-owners, BBB accredited since 19 November 2021, A+ rating, no complaints, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

  • Serves Spencer, Bedford and Bloomington, with a Bloomington address on West 7th Street.. Company about page

What they actually do. Roof replacement and repair, storm damage, metal roofing, siding, windows, gutters and remodelling.

Why it ranks here. The only firm in the pool based inside the metro, in Spencer, Owen County, with a Bloomington address, BBB accreditation since 2021 with no complaints, and a 4.7 across 91 reviews.

Best fit for: Owen County and west Bloomington homeowners, and metal roofs.

What we would want clarified. Its founding is unclear: BBB says 2010, its LLC dates from 2020 and its site claims 25 years of experience. It also does general remodelling. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

3. Amish Roofers: TRB Score 51.1

Amish Roofers is based in Bedford, IN, led by Eli Hershberger, President (BBB), BBB accredited since 12 March 2021, A rating, two complaints in three years, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Independently corroborated:

What they actually do. Metal and shingle roofing, residential and commercial, hail damage repair.

Why it ranks here. A metal roofing specialist from Bedford, BBB accredited since 2021, whose published service area includes Monroe and Owen counties.

Best fit for: Metal roofs.

What we would want clarified. BBB rates it A rather than A+ because of two answered service complaints in three years; the December 2025 one alleges property damage, unagreed extra charges and a lien threat on an insurance job, which the firm disputes. It is based in Lawrence County and publishes no street address. Its 4.5 across 37 reviews is the lowest of the three. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (812) 650-8070, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

What 4.0 inch hail does to a Bloomington, IN roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the Bloomington, IN statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 42 hail reports, 72 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 7 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $11.4 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Bloomington in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
25 June 2023 4.0 in Spencer Owen
16 May 2025 2.75 in Adel Owen
25 June 2023 2.5 in Ellettsville Monroe
19 May 2017 2.0 in Bloomington Monroe
2 April 2024 1.8 in Bloomington Monroe
5 November 2017 1.75 in Harrodsburg Monroe

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 25 June 2023 near Spencer, measured at 4.0 inches. That is grapefruit sized. Stones that big destroy asphalt shingles outright, dent metal, crack tile and routinely total roofs across whole neighbourhoods.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 72 knots, about 83 mph, near Gosport on 31 March 2023. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 7 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF3 near Stinesville on 31 March 2023.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 31 March 2023 event near Gosport, reproduced verbatim:

Supercell thunderstorm straight line winds gusted to 58-83 mph for 8 minutes from 2202 to 2210 EST, downing at least 3 trees amid dime-sized hail and horizontal rain. Also, a nearby large tree was downed into a barn.

That is what the specification has to anticipate here, written up by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in June (30), May (24), March (23). The worst years on record were 2023 (23), 2025 (20), 2017 (19). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Bloomington, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Bloomington. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

Three violent seasons

On the night of 31 March 2023 the supercell that had just produced the Sullivan EF3 spawned a second EF3 inside McCormick’s Creek State Park in Owen County. It struck campers in Loop A, killing two and injuring two, and peaked at 152 to 153 mph at the Owen and Monroe county line, where two barns were completely gone and a new 12-ton combine was thrown 50 yards. On West Wolf Mountain Road in Monroe County several homes lost large sections of their roofs.

Fifteen months later, on 25 June 2024, a storm complex crossed from Terre Haute to Seymour in about two hours, and the Bloomington airport measured a 78 mph gust. NWS said Bloomington saw the most significant damage of the event, with widespread tree, pole and property damage across a large swath of the city; NOAA attaches $5 million to it, the largest wind-damage figure in the two counties in the decade.

On 16 May 2025 a long-track tornado ran 35 miles across southern Monroe County with winds up to 128 mph. It tore the roof off the Clear Creek post office and threw it 50 yards, badly damaged the roofs of single-storey rental units, and took the roof and a wall off an older motel before crossing the north end of Monroe Lake. The same evening 2.75-inch hail broke windows at Adel. And on 25 June 2023 softball hail had fallen in Spencer.

With nearly two-thirds of Bloomington’s homes rented, the decision to replace a storm-damaged roof usually rests with a landlord rather than the people living under it.

Because nobody licenses roofers here, the checks fall to the owner: the contractor’s liability and workers’ compensation certificates, confirmed with the insurer; its record with the BBB; whether it will pull a county permit where the deck or structure is touched; and no offer to cover your deductible.

What a Bloomington, IN homeowner should ask for in writing

There is no state roofing licence in IN. Indiana issues no state roofing or general contractor licence. The state licenses only a few building trades, such as plumbing contractors, elevator contractors and manufactured home installers, so there is no state roofing exam, no state roofing licence number and no state board that can discipline a roofer.

Regulation is municipal. In Indianapolis the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services requires general contractors, roofers included, to be listed, which takes a $10,000 surety bond, insurance certificates and an orientation; the listing covers Marion County outside the excluded cities of Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway and Southport, which run their own requirements. Other cities set their own rules, from bonded registration to none at all.

That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.

Check here: Indianapolis Business and Neighborhood Services contractor licensing. Indiana has no state roofing or general contractor licence, so licensing is entirely municipal and county level, and it varies sharply between neighbouring jurisdictions. Ask which city or county licence the contractor holds for the jurisdiction your house actually sits in, and confirm it with that building department rather than accepting a licence issued elsewhere in the state as proof.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Bloomington, IN rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Bloomington, IN pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 3 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 1 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.6. The top three were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. The findings are printed above whether they flatter the contractor or not, and nobody paid to appear.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Is Bloomington a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Bloomington is a university city of renters, 65 percent of homes, in a corner of Indiana that has taken three violent storm seasons in a row: the McCormick’s Creek EF3 in 2023, a 78 mph downburst across the city in 2024, and a long-track tornado that tore the roof off the Clear Creek post office in 2025. Neither Indiana nor Monroe County licenses roofers. Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Bloomington?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Bloomington, IN statistical area logged 72 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 33 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
