What you need before you start the downspout install
Before attaching a downspout to gutter, confirm the gutter run is hung with the correct slope and the outlet holes are marked. A downspout only drains well if the gutter pitches toward it at about 1/4 inch per 10 feet. Gather the elbows, downspout stock, brackets, and fasteners for each drop so you assemble top to bottom without stopping.

Tools are basic: tin snips or a downspout crimper, a drill or impact driver, a rivet gun if you rivet, a chalk line or level, and a ladder rated for the wall height. A downspout crimper saves the most time because it lets you swage one end of each cut section for a clean slip fit.
How to install a downspout: the outlet comes first
Installing a downspout starts at the gutter, not the wall. Cut or punch the outlet into the low end of the gutter run where the slope drains to, then seal and rivet the outlet flange before any elbow goes on. A leaking outlet is the most common downspout failure, so this joint gets sealant and mechanical fasteners both.
- Mark the outlet. Center it over the drop location at the lowest point of the gutter slope. Trace the outlet tube.
- Cut the hole. Drill a starter hole, then cut to the line with tin snips or an outlet punch. Deburr the edge so it does not tear the flange.
- Seal the flange. Run a bead of gutter sealant around the outlet flange, seat it into the hole from inside the gutter, and press flat.
- Fasten it. Set three or four pop rivets or short screws evenly around the flange. Wipe the squeeze-out smooth so debris does not catch on it.
If your gutter run uses a pre-punched outlet section, skip the cutting and go straight to sealing and fastening. The rest of the drop hangs off this outlet, so it has to be solid.
Downspout elbow types: A elbow vs B elbow and the offset
A downspout elbow changes the direction of the drop, and the two common styles bend on different planes. An A elbow (front or back elbow) bends toward or away from the wall; a B elbow (side elbow) bends left or right along the wall. Most installs use two elbows at the top to create the offset that brings the downspout from the gutter face back flat against the siding.

The offset is the short piece of downspout between the two top elbows that spans the gap from the gutter face to the wall. To size it, measure the horizontal distance from the outlet to the siding, subtract the reach of both elbows, and cut the offset to fill what is left. On most fascia the offset ends up 4 to 10 inches long. Getting this measurement right is what makes the finished downspout sit flush instead of standing off the wall.
Crimp direction matters at every joint: the crimped (swaged) end always points down so water runs inside the pipe, never out a seam. Assemble the top elbow onto the outlet, add the offset, then the second elbow so the run drops straight down the wall.
Attaching the downspout and joining sections
To attach the downspout to the gutter, slide the top elbow onto the outlet tube and fasten it, then hang the vertical run off that assembly. Overlap each joint by at least 1.5 inches, crimped end into the section below, and set two fasteners on opposite sides of every joint. - Connect to the outlet. Slip the first A elbow over the outlet tube and secure with two screws or rivets on opposite faces.
- Measure the vertical run. Hold the second top elbow at the wall and measure down to where the bottom elbow will start. Cut the downspout to that length.
- Crimp and join. Swage the top end of the cut downspout, slide it up into the second elbow, and fasten. Add more sections the same way for tall walls, upper section always outside the lower.
- Fasten every joint. Two fasteners per joint, opposite sides. Do not seal slip joints; they are meant to shed water, and sealant traps debris.
Downspout bracket spacing: how often to strap the run
Downspout brackets hold the vertical run tight to the wall so wind and ice cannot pull it loose. Space brackets every 6 to 8 feet along the run, and add one within about 6 inches of the top elbow assembly and one near the bottom elbow. Any bracket gap wider than 10 feet leaves the run free to flex and tear at the joints in high wind.

Fasten brackets into solid backing: studs, blocking, or masonry anchors, not just siding. On vinyl or fiber-cement, drill a pilot into the sheathing or framing behind so the bracket screw bites something structural. A bracket that only grips siding pulls out the first time ice loads the run.
Finishing the bottom: elbow and extension
The bottom of the downspout gets an elbow that turns the water away from the foundation, then an extension that carries it clear. A downspout that dumps at the base of the wall drives water toward the footing, so plan to move discharge at least 4 feet out, and 6 feet is better on clay soils. Water should enter the outlet cleanly, stay inside every joint, and exit past the extension with no seepage at the elbows. Any drip at a joint means a crimp is reversed or a fastener is loose, and it is far easier to fix now than after the first storm.
