Green Metal Roofing: Maker Shades, Heat Data and 2026 Panel Prices

Green metal roofing compared by maker: Hartford, Forest, Ivy, Evergreen and Patina Green on SRI, fade warranty terms and October 2026 panel prices.

Green Metal Roofing: Maker Shades, Heat Data and 2026 Panel Prices

Green metal roofing is sold under at least ten maker color names, from Hartford Green and Forest Green to Ivy Green, Evergreen, Hemlock Green and Patina Green, and the same name can mean very different heat performance: Drexel Metals lists Hartford Green at a solar reflectance (SR) of 0.08 and an SRI of 3, while McElroy Metal lists its PVDF Hartford Green at SR 0.25 and SRI 23. This guide compares every green we could verify on maker data sheets, the paint warranties behind them, and October 2026 panel prices.

Green metal roofing here means steel or aluminum panels with a green PVDF (Kynar 500) or SMP paint finish. A vegetated roof planted with sedum is a different product with its own load and membrane rules, covered in our green roof cost and load guide.

Key numbers at a glance

Buyers ask about heat, fade terms, panel price and code thresholds first: SRI runs from 3 to 53, PVDF fade is capped at 5 Hunter units for 35 years by Metal Sales, and 29 gauge panels start at $1.29 per sq ft of coverage. Each figure comes from a named maker document, retailer listing or code summary, dated where the source gives a date.

Which green metal roof colors do the major makers sell?

The greens on the McElroy, Metal Sales, Drexel, Englert, Berridge, Sheffield and Union Corrugating charts group into five families: deep (Hartford, Forest), medium-dark (Evergreen, Ivy, Classic), blue-green (Hemlock, Teal), muted light (Fern, Everglade Moss, Colony) and copper patina (Patina Green, Aged Copper). The SRI column shows how far each family spreads across makers.

Western States Metal Roofing says Forest Green is “sometimes also known as Hunter Green,” so a “hunter green metal roof” quote usually maps to a Forest Green or Hartford Green coil. Ask the seller for the maker and the paint code, because the name alone does not fix the reflectance.

Heat data for each green, maker by maker

Solar reflectance (SR) is the share of sunlight bounced off, thermal emittance (TE) is how well the panel sheds absorbed heat, and SRI (ASTM E1980) combines both on a scale where standard black is 0 and standard white is 100. Hartford Green is held for its own table in the next section.

Union Corrugating’s 2024 color chart (Rev A, 09/24) lists Evergreen and Ivy Green in its Signature 200 siliconized polyester line and Classic Green in its Signature 300 low-gloss PVDF line, and states that all Signature 200 and 300 colors are cool roof compliant through the CRRC program. The chart itself does not print SR values, so pull the CRRC listing for the exact product before relying on a number.

Hartford Green is not one color: SRI 3 to 25 depending on the maker

Hartford Green is the most widely charted dark green, but its heat data splits into two groups. Five makers publish a version at SRI 22 to 25 (SR 0.25 to 0.271 where listed). Drexel Metals publishes a version at SR 0.08 and SRI 3, an extended-lead-time color without a CRRC rating on its chart, which behaves almost like black.

The practical rule: a 13°F to 15°F gap separates two roofs both sold as “Hartford Green.” If the bid names only the color, ask which coil maker and paint code it is, and ask for the SR and SRI figures in writing.

How hot does a green metal roof get?

Under the ASTM E1980 standard noon condition, green metal roofs we calculated land between 146°F and 178°F, against 180°F for the standard black surface and 112°F for standard white. The spread comes almost entirely from solar reflectance, since painted greens share emittance values of 0.83 to 0.87.

Surface (maker data) SR TE Calculated surface temp Calculated SRI (published)
ASTM E1980 standard black 0.05 0.90 180°F 0
Drexel Hartford Green 0.08 0.89 assumed 178°F 3 (3)
McElroy Hartford Green PVDF 0.25 0.85 165°F 23 (23)

McElroy Patina Green PVDF 0.46 0.85 146°F 51 (51)
ASTM E1980 standard white 0.80 0.90 112°F 100

One finding stands out: McElroy’s own Hartford Green PVDF (SR 0.25) reflects less sunlight than McElroy’s Matte Black PVDF (SR 0.27), so the darkest green on that chart runs hotter than its black. If heat is your concern and you want a dark roof, a mid green such as Classic Green (SRI 33) or Hemlock Green (SRI 32 to 43) buys back 7°F to 14°F at the surface versus a 165°F Hartford Green.

Does a green metal roof meet cool roof codes?

Most mid and light greens can meet California’s steep-slope threshold; the darkest non-reflective greens cannot. Per the Cool Roof Rating Council’s summary of the 2025 Title 24, Part 6 Energy Code (effective January 1, 2026), steep-sloped single-family reroofs in Climate Zones 4 and 8 through 15 need an aged SR of at least 0.20 and emittance of at least 0.75, or an SRI of at least 16, and the product must be CRRC rated. New single-family homes face the same values in Climate Zones 10 through 15 under Section 150.1.

Green product (initial values) Initial SR Initial SRI Against aged SR 0.20 / SRI 16
Drexel Hartford Green 0.08 3 Fails before any aging
Drexel Forest Green 0.10 5 Fails before any aging
McElroy Hartford Green PVDF 0.25 23 Initial values clear it; confirm the 3-year aged value on the CRRC listing
Metal Sales Forest Green (26) 0.27 26 Initial values clear it; confirm aged value
Drexel Patina Green, Hemlock Green (CRRC rated on chart) 0.33, 0.31 34, 32 Margin above threshold; confirm aged value
McElroy Patina Green PVDF 0.46 51 Widest margin of the greens checked

Maker charts print initial values, and the code tests 3-year aged values, so the CRRC Rated Products Directory at coolroofs.org is the document an inspector will check. Where Title 24 requires a cool low-slope roof (below 2:12), the bar is aged SR 0.63 and emittance 0.75, or SRI 75, which no green on these charts reaches. The ENERGY STAR roof products label is not an option: EPA sunset that specification on June 1, 2022.

SMP or PVDF for a green metal roof: fade and chalk terms

For a green roof in full sun, PVDF is the paint system with the tighter written fade limit. Metal Sales’ June 1, 2026 warranties cap PVDF fade at 5 Hunter units for 35 years and its Colorfast45 siliconized polyester at 6 NBS units for 30 years on non-vertical (roof) surfaces. McElroy’s Delta E explainer puts the minimal detectable color difference at about 1 ΔE.

Colorfast45 runs a 0.70 to 0.80 mil topcoat and 0.90 to 1.10 mil total topside film, per the Metal Sales specification sheet. Western States Metal Roofing says PVDF can cost as much as 30% more than SMP and recommends PVDF for green roofs and SMP for green siding, since walls take less direct sun.

How much do green metal roofing panels cost?

Painted green 29 gauge ribbed panels listed at $1.29 to $1.67 per square foot of coverage on October 19, 2026, or $3.87 to $5.00 per linear foot for a 36 in wide panel. Moving to 26 gauge in the same Union Corrugating MasterRib line raised the price 23%, from $3.87 to $4.77 per linear foot. Green itself carried no premium over other standard colors: PBS Direct priced 12 ft MasterRib at $46.44 in both Ivy Green and White ($36.72 in bare Galvalume), and Menards priced 12 ft Pro-Rib at $46.96 in both Emerald Green and Charcoal Gray.

PBS Direct, Menards and Lowe’s prices were read from Google Shopping results and Lenco and Southeastern prices from the retailers’ own pages, all on October 19, 2026. Prices change weekly and exclude trim, closures, screws and delivery. Installed, the site’s metal roof cost guide estimates exposed-fastener steel at $6 to $12 per sq ft and snap-lock standing seam steel at $9 to $16.

Worked example: green panels for a 1,280 sq ft cabin roof

A simple gable with two 40 ft long planes and 16 ft eave-to-ridge panel runs has 1,280 sq ft of roof. With 36 in coverage panels, each plane takes 14 panels (40 ft divided by 3 ft is 13.3, rounded up), so the order is 28 panels at 16 ft, covering 1,344 sq ft, a 5% overage.

Line Menards Pro-Rib Emerald Green MasterRib 29 ga Evergreen MasterRib 26 ga Ivy Green
Panels (16 ft, 36 in coverage) 28 28 28
Price per panel $62.66 $61.92 $76.32
Panels subtotal $1,754.48 $1,733.76 $2,136.96
Panel cost per sq ft of roof (1,280 sq ft) $1.37 $1.35 $1.67
Installed range for the roof at $6 to $12 per sq ft (Roofing Brief estimate) $7,680 to $15,360

The panels are $1.35 to $1.67 of the $6 to $12 per sq ft installed figure, so paint choice moves the total far less than profile or labor. If a PVDF green panel cost the full 30% more that Western States cites, the $2,136.96 subtotal would rise by about $641, against an installed range that spans $7,680.

Real copper patina versus Patina Green paint

Patina Green paint gives the blue-green copper look on day one at painted-steel prices; real copper reaches green on its own schedule. The Copper Development Association says the natural patina takes about five to seven years in coastal or industrial air, longer in rural areas, and may never fully develop in some climates.

Option When it turns green Heat data Installed cost (Roofing Brief estimate)
Copper standing seam About 5 to 7 years coastal or industrial; longer rural (CDA) Changes as the surface oxidizes; no single SRI $20 to $45 per sq ft
Patina Green PVDF on steel (McElroy) Green at install SR 0.46, SRI 51 $9 to $16 per sq ft as snap-lock standing seam steel
Aged Copper (Sheffield) Green at install SRI 53 Same steel standing seam range
Metal Sales Aged Copper (65) PVDF Green at install SR 0.32, SRI 32 Same steel standing seam range

The two “Aged Copper” rows show the naming trap again: Sheffield’s version has an SRI of 53 and Metal Sales’ version an SRI of 32. More on copper’s color stages and lifespan is in our copper roofing guide.

Green metal roofs in wooded and wildfire areas

Paint color does not change a metal roof’s fire class; the tested assembly does. Under 2021 IRC Section R902.1, metal sheets and shingles installed on noncombustible decks count as Class A, while the same panels over a wood deck need a listed assembly tested to UL 790 or ASTM E108 to claim Class A. Copper sheets of at least 16 ounces per square foot are the exception: R902.1 deems them Class A even over a combustible deck.

Lake house with a green ribbed metal roof beside a wooded shoreline
Under 2021 IRC R902.1, metal sheets on noncombustible decks are deemed Class A; over wood decks the listed assembly sets the rating.

California moved its wildfire roofing rules into the 2025 California Wildland-Urban Interface Code (Title 24, Part 7) on January 1, 2026. For a forest or lake-house build in a mapped fire hazard zone, ask the panel maker for the Class A assembly listing that matches your deck and underlayment, and confirm it with the local building department before ordering.

Sheffield Metals notes that dark glossy greens such as Hartford Green and Evergreen show oil canning more than light, low-gloss colors, and it offers Evergreen in a 26 gauge low-gloss finish. On a cabin roof seen from a dock or deck, striated panels or a low-gloss green reduce that visible waviness; our page on striated versus flat metal panels covers the panel side.

What colors go with a green metal roof?

The pairings below are editorial guidance, not survey results. Each names a maker green with its published SRI, from 22 for Englert Hartford Green to 53 for Sheffield Aged Copper, so you can weigh look against heat in the same row.

Gray stone or charcoal siding Classic Green (Metal Sales 66, Union Signature 300) 33 (Metal Sales) Mid value reads green against gray without going near black
Copper gutters, historic or civic style Patina Green 28 to 51 (Sheffield to McElroy) Matches the color copper weathers toward
Tan stucco in a hot climate McElroy Patina Green PVDF or Sheffield Aged Copper 51 to 53 Highest SRI greens on the charts checked

HOA covenants and historic-district guidelines can restrict roof color. Submitting the maker name, color code (for example Englert 870G98 Forest Green) and a physical chip gives a review board a fixed product to approve instead of the word “green.”

Which green metal roof should you pick?

Pick by four facts in this order: code (does Title 24 or an HOA apply), sun exposure (PVDF for a south-facing roof), profile (Western States says standing seam panels are generally not sold in SMP colors), then shade. The table maps common situations to a specific product choice. If heat or a cool-roof rule matters more than the color, compare the reflectance figures in our white metal roof guide.

How to order a green metal roof without a color mismatch

Most green-roof complaints trace to ordering by name only, and Hartford Green alone spans SRI 3 (Drexel) to 25 (CMG and Berridge). These seven steps tie the order to a maker, a paint code and a warranty document.

  1. Confirm the green exists in your profile and plant. McElroy’s Max-Rib exposed-fastener chart (04-22) stocks Evergreen and Hartford Green at all plants but Forest Green only at Marshall, MI and Patina Green only at Lewisport, KY and Winchester, VA.
  2. Get the maker name and paint code on the quote. Englert’s Hartford Green is PPG 870G99; Metal Sales Forest Green is color code 26.
  3. Request a physical chip. Union Corrugating’s chart states that final color selection should be made from metal color chips, not screens.
  4. Get SR, TE and SRI in writing, plus the CRRC product ID if California Title 24 or a cool roof rule applies.
  5. Read the paint warranty for roof (non-vertical) terms. Metal Sales Colorfast45 roof terms are 6 NBS units and chalk No. 7 for 30 years, looser than its wall terms.
  6. Order trim, closures and color-matched screws from the same color line. Western States notes green-headed screws are sold for SMP exposed-fastener panels.
  7. For metallic copper-look greens, install every panel in the same direction: Union Corrugating says its metallic panels and trim are directional and can show shade variation otherwise.

For the full palette, see our metal roof colors guide; for exposed-fastener colors by profile, the corrugated metal roof colors guide. If you are weighing green against an earth tone, see our brown metal roof guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is green a good color for a metal roof?

Green works on a metal roof when you pick the shade by its data sheet, not its name. McElroy Patina Green in PVDF has an SRI of 51, while Drexel Hartford Green has an SRI of 3. For a roof in full sun, a PVDF green puts a written cap on fading: Metal Sales warrants no more than 5 Hunter units of fade for 35 years.

What are the downsides of a green roof?

For a green-painted metal roof, the downsides are heat and fade: dark greens such as Drexel Hartford Green (SR 0.08) run near black-roof temperatures, and SMP greens carry looser fade terms (6 NBS units over 30 years on Metal Sales Colorfast45). A vegetated green roof is a different system with saturated loads and membrane costs, covered in our green roof guide.

How much is a 20 ft sheet of metal roofing?

A 20 ft green steel sheet ran about $50 to $95 in October 2026 listings. Southeastern Building Products listed 29 gauge Southern Green at $2.49 per linear foot on sale ($49.80 for 20 ft). At the $3.87 per foot rate of 29 gauge Union Corrugating MasterRib, 20 ft works out to $77.40; the 26 gauge rate of $4.77 gives $95.40.

What is the cheapest color of metal roofing?

Unpainted Galvalume is the cheapest finish. On October 19, 2026, PBS Direct listed a 12 ft Union Corrugating MasterRib panel at $36.72 in Galvalume and $46.44 in Ivy Green or White, a 26% paint premium. Standard greens usually price like other standard colors; McElroy adds a charge for its deep tone Hartford Green.

What is the biggest problem with metal roofs?

On glossy dark greens, the most visible problem is oil canning, the waviness in flat panel areas. Sheffield Metals says dark glossy shades such as Hartford Green and Evergreen show it more and recommends striations or a lower-gloss finish. Drexel Metals states on its color chart that oil canning is not a cause for rejection, so plan for it before ordering.

What is the most popular green for metal roofs?

We found no published national sales ranking of green metal roof colors. The one maker statement we found is from Sheffield Metals, which calls Evergreen its most popular green, a medium-dark traditional shade with an SRI of 26 on its card. Hartford Green appears on more maker charts than any other green in our review: McElroy, Drexel, Englert, Berridge, Sheffield and CMG all list it.

Is Hartford Green the same as Forest Green?

No. They are separate colors on the same charts. Englert lists Hartford Green (PPG code 870G99, SRI 22) and Forest Green (870G98, SRI 30) side by side, and Drexel lists both too. Hartford Green has the lower solar reflectance on all three charts that publish both: Englert, Drexel and Berridge. Western States Metal Roofing says Forest Green is sometimes called Hunter Green.
