Vermiculite and Zonolite: test this one first
Vermiculite is the old attic insulation type that matters most, because much of it carries asbestos. It looks like loose gold-brown or gray pebbles poured between the joists, often 3 to 6 inches deep, with a shiny accordion-layered surface that resembles small mica flakes. From the attic hatch it reads like a bed of gravel rather than a blanket.
A single mine near Libby, Montana supplied more than 70 percent of the vermiculite sold in the United States from 1919 to 1990, and that ore was contaminated with asbestos. It was sold under the brand name Zonolite. The US Environmental Protection Agency advises homeowners to assume vermiculite is from Libby and treat it as asbestos-containing unless a lab proves otherwise.
Do not sweep, vacuum, or move vermiculite. Disturbing it releases fibers. Mineral wool and rock wool
Mineral wool is one of the oldest attic insulation types in North American homes, common from the early 1900s into the 1950s and still made today. It looks like dense, matted fibers in gray, brown, or off-white, closer to coarse cotton candy than to fiberglass, and it is noticeably heavier than cellulose. Rock wool is spun from molten rock, while slag wool comes from the byproduct skimmed off molten metal, so you may see small dark specks in the older slag versions.
Mineral wool itself is not asbestos, though a few mid-century blends included asbestos fibers, so confirm before major disturbance. Left dry and undisturbed it holds an R-value near R-3 per inch and resists fire well, which is why many homes simply add new insulation over it. Old cellulose from ground newspaper
Cellulose is soft, gray, and fluffy, made from ground-up recycled paper, so a close look often shows flecks of newsprint. It packs the attic floor like a layer of dense lint and is treated with borate chemicals for fire and pest resistance. Some homes hold pre-war cellulose or wood-pulp product, but most cellulose you find dates from the 1970s energy crisis onward.
The problem with old cellulose is not toxicity, it is performance. It settles over time, losing loft and R-value, and its fire-retardant treatment can fade after decades. Batts are rectangular blankets fitted between the joists, sometimes faced with kraft paper or foil, while loose fill looks like a thick downy carpet of yellow, pink, or white fibers. Early fiberglass is thinner and less dense than modern batts.
Old fiberglass is not a health hazard the way asbestos is, but the loose fibers irritate skin, eyes, and lungs, so wear a respirator and long sleeves near it. Its main issue is thin coverage: mid-century attics were often insulated to R-11 or R-19, far below today’s R-49 to R-60 targets in cold zones. In most cases you can simply add new insulation over sound old fiberglass rather than removing it.
Asbestos products beyond vermiculite
Asbestos in older attics shows up in more than vermiculite. Watch for corrugated cardboard-like pipe and duct wrap, white or gray chalky millboard around chimneys and flues, and friable batts that crumble and release dust when touched. Homes built or renovated before 1980 are the highest-risk group, and asbestos is impossible to confirm by eye.
The rule is simple: if a material is friable and you suspect asbestos, do not cut, scrape, tear, or vacuum it. Fibers are released when the material is disturbed, and the risk is inhalation. Balsam wool, perlite, and other oddities
A few uncommon materials turn up in older attics and can confuse identification. Balsam wool is a pre-1960 wood-fiber batt, brown and fibrous, usually sandwiched inside kraft-paper facing printed with the product name. Perlite is a loose-fill mineral that looks like tiny white or off-white polystyrene beads, lighter and whiter than vermiculite, and it is not asbestos-bearing.
You may also find urea-formaldehyde foam (UFFI) from the late 1970s, a hardened yellowish foam that off-gassed formaldehyde when new, though decades-old cured foam is largely inert.
