Spray-on roof coating for asphalt shingles is a liquid membrane (usually acrylic or elastomeric) sprayed or rolled over an existing shingle roof to waterproof, reflect UV, and restore color. It can be done, but the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) “strongly advises against the field application of any type of coatings or rejuvenators over installed asphalt shingles” in its July 2026 technical bulletin, and Owens Corning’s January 2026 shingle warranty excludes damage caused by coatings and painting. Coatings earn their keep on flat commercial membranes, not on steep-slope shingle roofs designed to shed water through overlapping pieces.
Can you coat asphalt shingles?
Yes, you physically can coat asphalt shingles with a sprayer or roller, and products are sold for it. Armor Shingle Roof Coating listed at $379.00 for a 5-gallon pail on October 19, 2026, which its maker says covers 1,250 sq ft in two coats applied with a 1/2 in nap roller or a garden-type pump sprayer, 3 to 4 hours apart. Henry 812 RoofSaver clear sealer listed at $36.97 for 0.90 gallon at Home Depot, and Henry says a gallon covers about 200 sq ft. ArmorPoxy and Vital Coat sell similar products.
ARMA’s position is the counterweight. Its bulletin says “many asphalt shingle manufacturers specifically do not recommend installing field treatments on their shingles,” and adds that state or local building codes may prohibit the practice because a coating can change the roof’s fire classification, algae resistance or impact resistance. ARMA is the trade body whose members make the shingles. A coating and a shingle rejuvenator are not the same product. A coating lays a film on top of the shingles. A rejuvenator (the category Roof Maxx sells) soaks a penetrating oil into the asphalt and does not form a surface membrane. Does roof coating work on shingles?
Roof coating works reliably on flat and low-slope membrane roofs. On steep-slope asphalt shingles (2:12 and steeper under IRC R905.2.2) ARMA says there is “limited available documentation” that field treatments deliver longer roof life, energy-use reduction or leak remediation, while the risks “remain very real.” A coating can add short-term surface waterproofing and cosmetic color, but the Owens Corning warranty treats coatings as an exclusion, not as a life extension.
The two roof types are built on opposite principles, which explains why a coating that protects a warehouse membrane can harm a shingle roof.
Why coatings succeed on flat roofs but struggle on shingles
A flat membrane roof (TPO, EPDM, silicone-restored) is a single sealed surface sloped at least 1/4 in per foot under IRC R905.13.1, so a coating reinforces what the system already is: one watertight layer. A shingle roof is hundreds of overlapping pieces that shed water downhill; a Duration or Timberline HDZ square, for example, is 64 separate shingles, each lapped over the course below.
When you spray a non-permeable film over shingles, you seal the gaps between them. ARMA warns this “may create a vapor-retarding layer by sealing the voids around and between the shingles,” which “may contribute to moisture accumulation within the roofing system.” Attic ventilation sized to the IRC R806.2 ratio (1/150 of the vented area, or 1/300 with the code’s exceptions) is designed around a roof that is not sealed on top. What actually goes wrong: the elastomeric shingle case
The best-documented case is a Florida utility program. Florida Power & Light reported in court documents that its partner contractors coated 4,711 asphalt shingle roofs from 2007 to 2009, including 2,354 in Miami-Dade County and 1,358 in Broward County, and in 2009 it rebated 50 cents per square foot of roof over air-conditioned rooms, according to the Sun Sentinel (December 31, 2010). About a dozen customers complained to state regulators, and five homeowners sued, saying roofs coated in 2007 began leaking within eight months. A separate class action over the program was reported by Courthouse News (February 20, 2009). These were allegations in litigation, not a measured failure rate.
ARMA lists the same failure modes in its bulletin: coating shrinkage “may result in unsightly curling and/or cupping of the shingles or loosening of the granule surfacing.” Once granules loosen, the asphalt below is exposed to UV, the opposite of the protection the coating promised.
What spray-on shingle coatings actually claim vs deliver
Product marketing and the shingle industry’s guidance point in opposite directions. The table sets each common claim against the maker’s own wording and ARMA’s July 2026 bulletin.

Does elastomeric or sealant coating void the shingle warranty?
It can remove coverage for the damage that matters. Owens Corning’s January 2026 limited warranty (Pub. No. 10023873-H) does not cover “damage to the shingles caused by alterations made after completion of application, including … power washing, painting, the application of cleaning solutions not in accordance with our algae removal instructions, coatings, or other modifications.” ARMA adds that many shingle makers specifically do not recommend field treatments of any kind.
Before any coating touches your roof, do two things. First, find your warranty document and search it for “coating,” “painting” and “modifications,” because terms vary by manufacturer and by warranty tier. Second, ask the shingle manufacturer in writing whether the specific product is approved; if they will not approve it, assume coverage is at risk. Homeowners usually reach for a coating because replacement feels expensive. The real comparison is three-way, priced here for a 2,000 sq ft roof surface.

The DIY figures are material only, at the makers’ stated coverage, and exclude cleaning, labor and fall protection. If you still want to coat: doing it with eyes open
If your roof is out of warranty and you have accepted the risks, applying a coating correctly reduces (but does not remove) the downside. These are the steps product makers describe; ARMA does not endorse any procedure.
- Confirm the roof is dry and sound. Fix any active leak or soft decking first, because the film seals in whatever is underneath.
- Clean thoroughly, gently. Remove algae, moss and loose granules and let the roof dry fully; the Owens Corning warranty also excludes damage from power washing and from cleaning solutions not used per its algae removal instructions, so use the maker’s method.
- Choose a vapor-permeable product if possible. ArmorGarage describes its coating as breathable; ARMA’s moisture warning is aimed at non-permeable films.
- Apply two thin coats, not one thick one. Armor specifies two coats 3 to 4 hours apart with a 1/2 in nap roller or pump sprayer at 1,250 sq ft per 5-gallon pail; ARMA ties curling to coating shrinkage, which a heavy film makes worse.
- Plan for reapplication. ARMA notes many treatments need regular reapplication; Armor’s product warranty is 5 years, so price at least one recoat into the comparison.
Working on a steep-slope roof carries fall risk: OSHA’s construction rule at 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13) requires employers to protect workers doing residential construction 6 feet or more above a lower level.
