Titanium UDL underlayment comes in three grades, and the published data sheets show the biggest performance step is between UDL25 and UDL30, not between UDL30 and UDL50. UDL30 is the sensible default for an asphalt shingle re-roof. UDL50 earns its upcharge in exactly two situations: when your jurisdiction’s wind design provisions push you toward an ASTM D4869 Type III or Type IV underlayment, and when the deck will carry weeks of foot traffic before the primary roofing goes on.
All three grades ship as 48 in by 250 ft rolls covering 10 squares, all three carry the same 180 day maximum exposure condition, and all three now sit under the same lifetime limited warranty program. The differences that actually matter are thickness, tear strength, tensile strength, and one ASTM listing that only the top grade holds.

Titanium UDL25 vs UDL30 vs UDL50: the published spec table
Every figure below comes from the Titanium product data sheets published by InterWrap, the original manufacturer, whose site now redirects to the Owens Corning Titanium page. The UDL25 and UDL30 sheets carry the internal revision codes UDL25_SS_21April2015 and UDL30_SS_21April2015. Test values are described on those sheets as typical, within plus or minus 10 percent, not minimum guaranteed values.

Where the money actually goes between the three grades
Run the percentage change between grades and the marketing story falls apart. Moving from UDL25 to UDL30 buys 67 percent more thickness (15 mils to 25 mils) and 42 percent more machine direction tear strength (31 lb to 44 lb). Moving from UDL30 to UDL50 buys only 20 percent more thickness but 60 percent more cross direction tensile strength (110 lb to 176 lb).
That split tells you what each upgrade is for. The UDL25 to UDL30 step is a puncture and tear upgrade, which is what a boot heel, a dropped hatchet, or a bundle corner does to a deck sheet. The UDL30 to UDL50 step is a pull-through and dimensional stability upgrade, which is what wind uplift and weeks of exposed service demand.
Weight per square moves the same way: 2.4 lb, 4.0 lb, 4.7 lb. That is also the freight and pallet math. A UDL25 pallet holds 56 rolls, a UDL30 pallet 30, and a UDL50 pallet 27, per the same data sheets. On a large job the delivered cost gap between grades is driven as much by pallet count as by list price.
Titanium UDL25: the light grade, and its honest use case
Titanium UDL25 is the entry grade at 15 mils and 2.4 lb per square, which the data sheet describes as 11 times lighter and 14 times stronger than 30 lb felt. It is published for use under asphalt and synthetic shingles, metal roofing, and cedar shakes. Its product warranty document is titled UDL-25 Plus, so distributor listings sometimes show it as UDL25 Plus.
It is a real underlayment, not a token one. At 31 lb machine direction tear strength it is roughly eight times the 4 lb the same sheet lists for 30 lb felt. The reason to be careful is margin, not compliance: 15 mils gives you the least cushion if the shingle crew slips a week, if the deck has raised fastener heads, or if the roof sees repeated traffic.
Pick UDL25 when the primary roofing goes on within days, the slope is walkable, and the roof is a straightforward gable or hip with few penetrations. It is the grade where the pallet economics matter most, because you get 56 rolls to a pallet instead of 30.
Titanium UDL30: the default grade for shingle re-roofs
Titanium UDL30 sits at 25 mils and 4.0 lb per square, with 44 lb machine direction and 40 lb cross direction tear strength. Owens Corning markets it as the professional grade, and its published use list is wider than UDL25: metal, tile, slate, shake, and shingle. The data sheet claims 20 times the strength of 30 lb felt at 6 times lighter.
This is the grade most shingle re-roofs should be specifying. It clears the ASTM D226 Type II path that the 2021 IRC accepts, it handles the traffic of a two or three day tear-off and reload without a second thought, and it does not carry the freight penalty of the top grade.
Its permeance is 0.06 perms per ASTM E96, which classifies it as a vapor barrier. The installation instructions say so directly and require that it be installed above properly ventilated space. That is a real design constraint on any unvented or poorly vented assembly, and it applies to UDL25 and UDL50 as well.
Titanium UDL50: the only grade with a published ASTM D4869 Type IV listing
Titanium UDL50 is 30 mils and 4.7 lb per square, with 55 lb tear strength in both directions, 178 lb and 176 lb tensile, and 300 psi burst strength. Its technical data sheet lists it as meeting ASTM D226 Types I and II and ASTM D4869 Types II and IV. Owens Corning states plainly that only UDL50 meets ASTM D4869 Types II and IV. The UDL50 sheet also adds Miami-Dade County approval and Tile Roofing Institute approval, which the UDL25 and UDL30 sheets do not list.
That D4869 Type IV listing is the single line item that can make UDL50 non-negotiable rather than nice to have. Under the 2021 IRC, Table R905.1.1(1) permits ASTM D226 Type I or II, ASTM D4869 Types I through IV, or ASTM D6757 for asphalt shingles in ordinary conditions, but in areas where wind design is required it narrows the list to ASTM D226 Type II or ASTM D4869 Type III or Type IV. All three Titanium grades claim D226 Type II, so all three can qualify by that route, but UDL50 is the only one that also arrives with the heavier D4869 Type IV credential in hand.
The practical rule: if the plans examiner or the tile system manufacturer asks specifically for a D4869 Type IV underlayment, UDL25 and UDL30 will not answer that question on paper. Neither will most of the light synthetics covered in our roundup of the best synthetic underlayment brands.
The Titanium UDL50 warranty question, answered from the documents
Searchers looking up “Titanium UDL 50 warranty” usually expect a 50 year term, because older InterWrap warranty documents dated SPEC-R1-18Mar14 do state exactly that: 30 years for UDL25 Plus, 40 years for UDL30, and 50 years for UDL50. Those numbers are where the internet’s version of this answer comes from, and distributor SKUs still echo them.
The Titanium data sheets themselves point somewhere else. Both the UDL25 and UDL30 sheets reference a Titanium Lifetime Warranty page, and that document is a Titanium Lifetime Limited Warranty covering Titanium roofing underlayment for the lifetime of the service application, subject to correct installation. Under that program the warranty term stops being a reason to pay up for UDL50, because the coverage language does not vary by grade.
Two conditions void coverage under both the year-term documents and the lifetime document, and they are identical across all three grades: any part of the product exposed to UV after the roof cladding is installed, and the product left uncovered without cladding for more than 180 days. Warranty terms change at the manufacturer’s discretion, so confirm the current registered warranty with Owens Corning for your purchase date before quoting a term to a homeowner.
The slope footnote most spec comparisons miss
The published Titanium installation instructions do not treat slope the way buyers assume. The UDL25 and UDL30 sheets both state the product is not recommended for slopes less than 2:12. The UDL50 sheet states it is not recommended for slopes less than 4:12. The premium grade carries the more restrictive published slope floor, not the looser one.
That matters because the 2021 IRC R905.2.2 permits asphalt shingles down to 2:12 and requires double underlayment application from 2:12 up to 4:12. If you are roofing a 3:12 pitch under shingles, the code wants two layers, and the grade whose own instruction sheet stops at 4:12 is the awkward choice. UDL30 is the cleaner specification in that band.
All three sheets give the same application geometry: on slopes 4:12 and higher, run horizontally parallel to the eave, printed side up, with 4 in horizontal laps and 6 in vertical laps fastened roughly 1 in in from the edge. For low slope work they call for a 50 percent plus 1 in overlap and tell you to consult the authority having jurisdiction. Because these instruction sheets are the InterWrap-era documents, verify the current sheet with Owens Corning on any job where slope is the deciding factor.
How to install any Titanium UDL grade without voiding the warranty
- Prep the deck. The instructions require all protrusions removed, no voids or unsupported areas, and a surface that is dry, clean, and free of debris.
- Confirm the assembly is ventilated. At 0.05 to 0.06 perms these sheets are air, water, and vapor barriers, and the instructions require installation above properly ventilated space.
- Lay it out. On 4:12 and steeper, run parallel to the eave with the printed side up, 4 in horizontal laps and 6 in vertical laps, anchored about 1 in from the edge.
- Fasten with nails, never staples. The UDL25 and UDL30 instructions state in capitals that using staples to penetrate the product voids the warranty. Use corrosion resistant roofing nails with a 3/8 in head and 1 in leg, ring shank preferred, driven flush and 90 degrees to the deck.
- Match the fastener to the exposure. Same day cover allows plain roofing nails. Exposure beyond 5 days and up to 180 days requires 1 in plastic or metal cap nails, Miami-Dade approved tin tags, or metal caps, anchored at every printed position.
- Cover within 180 days. Past that window the water shedding warranty does not apply, whichever grade you used.
- Seal laps where required with a low solvent plastic roofing cement meeting ASTM D4586 Type 1, or a butyl rubber, urethane, or EPDM based caulk or tape sealant.
Which Titanium UDL grade is worth the upcharge
Buy UDL30 by default. It is the grade where the thickness and tear numbers step up hardest against UDL25, it covers the widest published list of primary roofing types short of the top grade, and it does not carry the pallet and freight penalty of UDL50. For most asphalt shingle re-roofs the upgrade past UDL30 buys strength the roof will never be asked to use.
Buy UDL50 when one of three things is true: your jurisdiction’s wind design provisions call for an ASTM D4869 Type III or Type IV underlayment, the specification is tile or slate where the deck carries battens and traffic for weeks, or the roof will sit exposed well past a few days. Its 55 lb tear strength in both directions and 176 lb cross direction tensile are what long exposure and cap nailing actually consume.
Buy UDL25 when cover goes on fast, the roof is simple, and pallet count drives your delivered cost. What you should not do is buy UDL50 for the warranty. Under the Titanium Lifetime Limited Warranty the coverage language does not step up with the grade, and the 180 day exposure limit is identical across all three.
