Best Roofers in Monroe, MI: 2 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the two highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Monroe, MI metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Arrow Roofing Services (81.4), Ripcord Construction (69.4). All of them carry a verifiable manufacturer certification, every rating here was cross-checked against an independent record, and no money changed hands for any placement.

The Roofing Brief scored 2 certified roofing contractors serving the Monroe metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top two individually to confirm its record. Monroe County’s roof losses come off Lake Erie and out of brief, low-rated tornadoes, not hail: a March 2017 gale did $15 million of damage in the county, and in August 2023 an EF1 tore roofs off homes at Frenchtown Villa. Michigan licenses every roofer, and Monroe registers them and permits every reroof. Five manufacturer-certified roofers appear in the directory for Monroe; three publish no Monroe County coverage and are excluded, and two Monroe County firms are ranked.

Wind, terrain and the Monroe, MI housing stock

Michigan requires a licence from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for residential work of $600 or more, after a state exam and 60 hours of courses, and a company must hold its own licence through a qualifying officer. A licence lapses the day after it expires, and a lapsed licensee counts as unlicensed. Unlicensed residential work carries a fine of $5,000 to $25,000 and up to a year in jail, and an unlicensed contractor cannot sue for payment or put a lien on your home.

The City of Monroe requires a permit to reroof and a $25 yearly contractor registration. Permits start at $100, rising with value: $235 plus $12 per $1,000 for jobs between $10,001 and $500,000. Starting without a permit costs half the permit fee again. In 2026 the city ran two free-permit fortnights that covered roofing jobs of $20,000 or less.

The 2015 Michigan Residential Code remains in force after a July 2025 court order paused the 2021 edition. It requires an ice barrier on every new shingle roof and sets Monroe County’s ground snow load at 20 psf, the lowest figure in Michigan. Michigan’s door-to-door sales law gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel a contract signed at home; we found no Michigan law on insurance deductibles.

Across 2016 to 2025 Monroe County logged 13 hail reports, one of two inches, 80 thunderstorm wind reports and eight tornadoes, all EF0 or EF1, with $2.05 million of recorded convective damage. The zone records add $19.2 million from high wind, $2 million from ice and $5 million from lakeshore flooding. The City of Monroe’s median home was built in 1953, and a third of its homes predate 1940.

1. Arrow Roofing Services: TRB Score 81.4

Arrow Roofing Services is based in Monroe, MI, in business since 2017, led by Trenton Wisecup, owner and president, BBB accredited since 6 July 2017, A+ rating, two complaints in three years, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: Master Elite (GAF), Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

  • Arrow Roofing Services LLC holds Residential Builder company licence 2102217772, issued February 2018 and current to May 2028; its owner holds an individual licence from June 2017.. Michigan LARA licence register
  • Accredited since July 2017 with an A+ rating; business started 2017; owner Trenton Wisecup; service area includes Monroe, Wayne, Washtenaw and Lenawee counties; two complaints in three years.. BBB business profile
  • Listed in Monroe as an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, membership 241405.. Owens Corning contractor locator

What they actually do. Residential and commercial reroofing, storm damage and insurance support, repairs and inspections, and roof rejuvenation treatment.

Why it ranks here. The only certified firm headquartered in Monroe itself, on Detroit Avenue, at GAF Master Elite with 270 reviews averaging 4.8 and Owens Corning Preferred status as well. Its 2017 founding agrees across BBB, its company filing and its own site, its company licence has run since 2018, and it keeps a dedicated Monroe service page. BBB has accredited it since its first year; it shows two complaints in three years whose details we could not read.

Best fit for: City of Monroe and Frenchtown homeowners who want a local, licensed firm with two manufacturer credentials and storm-claim experience.

What we would want clarified. A business of under ten years, with two BBB complaints in three years we could not read; ask about warranty response after storm work. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (866) 453-7534, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

2. Ripcord Construction: TRB Score 69.4

Ripcord Construction is based in Carleton, MI, led by Christopher Hoare, owner, BBB accredited since 19 August 2026, A+ rating, one complaint in three years, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

  • Accredited since August 2026 with an A+ rating; business started 2007, LLC formed 2020; service area Monroe, Wayne, Washtenaw, Lenawee and Macomb counties; one complaint in three years, not published.. BBB business profile
  • A family-owned Carleton roofer serving Monroe County, offering 30-year warranties and free wood replacement; it also builds custom homes and remodels.. Company website

What they actually do. Residential reroofing and repair, siding and windows, and custom homes and remodelling.

Why it ranks here. A family firm in Carleton, inside Monroe County, with 193 GAF reviews averaging 4.9. Roofing leads its business, though it also builds custom homes and remodels. Its company licence dates from 2021 and its owner’s from 2018. Its founding year is unresolved: BBB says 2007, its company was formed in 2020 and its site implies about 2009, so we give none. It offers free replacement of rotten decking found during a reroof, which matters on the county’s older houses.

Best fit for: Carleton, Newport and north-county homeowners who want a local roofer that includes deck replacement in the price.

What we would want clarified. It holds GAF’s entry Certified tier, its BBB accreditation dates only from August 2026, and it shows one unpublished complaint; get the free decking replacement written into the contract. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (734) 288-8445, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

The 80 wind reports that shape a Monroe, MI roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Monroe, MI statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 13 hail reports, 80 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 8 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $2.0 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Monroe in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
6 October 2018 2.0 in Stony Creek Monroe
14 July 2023 1.75 in Monroe Monroe
15 June 2023 1.75 in Erie Monroe
1 June 2019 1.25 in Scofield Monroe
6 October 2018 1.25 in Carleton Monroe
14 July 2023 1.25 in Carleton Monroe

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 6 October 2018 near Stony Creek, measured at 2.0 inches. That is hen-egg sized. Two inches is the threshold at which insurers expect functional damage and full replacement claims.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 65 knots, about 75 mph, near Carleton on 1 April 2023. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 8 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF1 near Monroe Custer Arpt on 25 September 2018.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 14 July 2023 event near Monroe, reproduced verbatim:

An outbreak of multicell clusters and supercells developed across Southeast Michigan on the afternoon of July 14, 2023. These storms produced areas of wind damage, large hail to golf ball size, heavy rain, and an EF0 tornado in Sanilac County before moving eastward into Canada and the lakes during the evening. Numerous trees were downed across the region, and in the Thumb there were several reports of destroyed corn and wheat fields as well as several homes with damage to siding due to wind-blown hail.

That is the kind of damage a roof in this metro has to be specified against, described by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in June (29), August (18), July (15). The worst years on record were 2023 (25), 2021 (15), 2018 (14). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Monroe, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Monroe. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

Lake Erie wind and weak tornadoes

Hail is a minor story in Monroe County: 13 reports in ten years, one at two inches, with no recorded damage. The money is in wind.

The single costliest event was not a thunderstorm at all. On 8 March 2017 gusts above 60 mph brought down lines and trees across southeast Michigan, with numerous reports of structural damage and about 800,000 customers without power; NOAA records $15 million of damage in the Monroe zone. On 4 May 2018 another windstorm put an estimated 70 knot gust and $3 million of damage on the same zone.

Tornadoes here are weak but frequent and close to homes. On 25 September 2018 an EF1 crossed from Monroe toward Grafton, where roofing was stripped to the trusses and windows blown out near Toben and South Stony Creek roads. On 15 June 2023 an EF1 of 90 mph ran through Detroit Beach, Woodland Beach and Baycrest Beach before crossing onto Lake Erie. On 24 August 2023 an EF1 of about 100 mph hit Frenchtown Villa mobile home park, tearing off roofs and flipping a home, and a second EF1 that evening left shingles and part of a roof torn off between Carleton Rockwood Road and the Detroit River.

Ice is the other load. The ice storm of 22 February 2023 left a quarter to half an inch of ice across the area and more than 500,000 customers without power, with $2 million of damage recorded in the Monroe zone; NWS said a footprint that wide had not been seen since April 2003. The code asks little of a Monroe roof on snow, at 20 psf, but still requires the 90 mph wind design and an ice barrier at the eaves.

So the questions for a Monroe roofer are about wind and fastening: how the edges and ridge will be secured, what happens if old decking is found under a pre-war roof, and how far the ice barrier will run. Then check the company’s state licence is current, not just issued, since licences lapse the day after they expire, and that it is registered with the city and pulls the permit.

Before you sign anything in Monroe, MI

Licensing is required in MI. Michigan requires a licence from the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for any residential construction, alteration or repair with an aggregate contract price of $600 or more. Roofers may hold either a Residential Builder licence, which covers roofing, or a Maintenance and Alteration Contractor licence with the roofing classification. Contracting without a licence for residential work is a misdemeanour carrying a fine of $5,000 to $25,000 and up to a year in jail for a first offence (MCL 339.601(6)).

Applicants must complete a 60-hour state-approved prelicensure course and pass the state licensing exam. A Maintenance and Alteration licence is limited to the trade classifications its holder has passed, such as roofing; a Residential Builder licence covers residential construction as a whole.

Check here: Michigan LARA builder and M&A licence lookup. The $600 threshold means anyone contracting directly with a homeowner to reroof needs a licence. The exemptions are narrow: owners working on their own home or maintaining their own rental property, and crews working solely under contract to a licensed builder. A company must hold its own licence through a qualifying officer, so look up the business name, not just the owner’s individual licence, and check that it is active and, for a Maintenance and Alteration licence, that it carries the roofing classification.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Monroe, MI rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Monroe, MI pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 2 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 1 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.86. The top two were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Good and bad findings are published together, and no contractor paid for a place here.

Set aside in Monroe. Contractors that would otherwise have scored into the top two were removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.

  • Holbrook’s Roofing Co Inc, which scored 74.1: Excluded on service area. A Downriver roofer since 1980, but BBB lists Wayne County only and its own site names only Trenton, Grosse Ile, Woodhaven, Brownstown and Riverview. Separately, its Michigan roofing licence shows an expiry date of 31 May 2026 with no renewal we could find, although the register’s status field still reads issued.
  • Certified Home Improvement LLC, which scored 69.6: Excluded on service area. A clean, licensed western Wayne County firm since 2005, but it serves Wayne, Oakland and Washtenaw counties, with BBB adding Macomb; no Monroe County community appears apart from Milan on the county line.
  • Roofing Restoration Inc, which scored 63.8: Excluded on service area. Its BBB service area is Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties and its website names no Monroe County community.

Lake Erie wind and weak tornadoes?

Hail is a minor story in Monroe County: 13 reports in ten years, one at two inches, with no recorded damage. The money is in wind.

Is Monroe a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Monroe County’s roof losses come off Lake Erie and out of brief, low-rated tornadoes, not hail: a March 2017 gale did $15 million of damage in the county, and in August 2023 an EF1 tore roofs off homes at Frenchtown Villa. Michigan licenses every roofer, and Monroe registers them and permits every reroof. Five manufacturer-certified roofers appear in the directory for Monroe; three publish no Monroe County coverage and are excluded, and two Monroe County firms are ranked.

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Monroe?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Monroe, MI statistical area logged 80 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 11 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.

Why is Holbrook’s Roofing Co Inc not on this list?

Excluded on service area. A Downriver roofer since 1980, but BBB lists Wayne County only and its own site names only Trenton, Grosse Ile, Woodhaven, Brownstown and Riverview. Separately, its Michigan roofing licence shows an expiry date of 31 May 2026 with no renewal we could find, although the register’s status field still reads issued..
