Best Roofers in Sandusky, OH: 4 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Best Roofers in Sandusky, OH: 4 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the four highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Sandusky, OH metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Horvath Roofing (78.5), North Coast Roofing of Ohio (77.9), Premier Roofing & Siding (60.2), Tusing Builders & Roofing Services (56.2). Each is certified by a manufacturer whose register we checked by hand, each rating has been tested against a source outside that register, and nobody bought a place on this page.

The Roofing Brief scored 4 certified roofing contractors serving the Sandusky metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top four individually to confirm its record. Around Sandusky Bay the roof threat comes off Lake Erie: wind reports outnumber hail nearly six to one, a 2016 downburst cut a two-mile swath through northeast Sandusky, and a 2023 EF2 near Oak Harbor took roofs off homes. A third of Ottawa County’s homes are seasonal, so damage can sit unseen for weeks. Ohio licenses no roofers, but the City of Sandusky publishes a live register of every contractor allowed to work there.

Quick picks for Sandusky:

  • Horvath Roofing: best overall (TRB Score 78.5). Verified services: roof replacement, roof repair, skylights, gutters, commercial roofing.
  • North Coast Roofing of Ohio: best for metal roofs (TRB Score 77.9). Verified services: roof replacement, roof repair, storm damage work, metal roofing, commercial roofing.
  • Premier Roofing & Siding: best for roof and siding together (TRB Score 60.2). Verified services: roof replacement, siding, windows, gutters.
  • Tusing Builders & Roofing Services: best for flat and low-slope sections (TRB Score 56.2). Verified services: roof replacement, commercial roofing, flat and low-slope roofing.

What a Sandusky roof is up against

Ohio issues no roofing licence; its construction licensing board covers only HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing and hydronics. The City of Sandusky fills the gap: every contractor must register with the Building Division before working in the city, with $300,000 of liability insurance, workers’ compensation and city tax registration, renewed each year. The city publishes the register online, and all four ranked firms are on it through December 2026.

A Sandusky roof replacement permit costs $100 for work under $10,000 and $150 above that, and doubles if filed after work starts. The city enforces the Residential Code of Ohio with a 115 mph design wind speed, a 20 psf ground snow load and a required ice barrier. Outside the city, whether a reroof needs a permit depends on whether a certified building department covers the address.

Ohio has no roofing-specific insurance law: no ban on deductible rebates and no special cancellation right after a claim denial. You can cancel a door-to-door sale until midnight of the third business day, and only a licensed public adjuster may be paid to handle your claim. A bill to license commercial roofers, Senate Bill 125, has sat in committee since February 2025 and would exempt homes in any case.

Sandusky’s housing is old and heavily rented: the city’s median home dates from 1955 and 49.9 percent of its homes are rented, against 23.9 percent across the metro. In Ottawa County 9,343 of 28,911 housing units are seasonal or occasional-use homes, about one in three.

Best fit for: Homeowners anywhere in Erie or Ottawa County who want the most-reviewed Master Elite firm with a long, clean record.

What we would want clarified. It is based just outside Sandusky in Huron, and a directory claim of Owens Corning top-tier status was not borne out by Owens Corning’s own locator. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Why it ranks here. A Sandusky exterior remodeller with 16 GAF reviews averaging 4.8 that describe both roof and siding jobs, BBB accredited since 2013 with no complaints. BBB and its site agree on 2001.

Best fit for: Sandusky homeowners replacing a roof and siding together who want one locally based firm.

What we would want clarified. Roofing is one of several exterior trades rather than its lead line, and it has few GAF reviews. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

What they actually do. Commercial and flat roofing, general contracting and residential roof replacement.

Services we could verify: roof replacement, commercial roofing, flat and low-slope roofing.

Why it ranks here. A Monroeville firm in neighbouring Huron County, about 15 miles away, with 59 GAF reviews averaging 4.6 and BBB accreditation since 2010; its site, BBB and GAF agree on 1998. Customer reviews describe home roof replacements as well as commercial work.

Best fit for: Owners of homes with flat or low-slope sections, or a home and a commercial building, who want one roofer for both.

Roof replacement and repair in Sandusky, OH

Short answer: In Sandusky, start with Horvath Roofing in Huron, the most-reviewed Master Elite firm, then North Coast Roofing of Ohio for a city-based Master Elite firm and standing seam metal, Premier Roofing & Siding for a roof and siding together, and Tusing Builders for flat or low-slope sections. The rule that matters most: Ohio licenses no roofers, but every contractor must register with Sandusky’s Building Division before working in the city.

Around Sandusky Bay the roof threat comes off Lake Erie. In ten years Erie and Ottawa counties logged 98 thunderstorm wind reports, 28 of them at 67 mph or more, against 17 hail reports, none of 2 inches or more. On 5 June 2016 a downburst cut a 2.25-mile swath through northeast Sandusky, damaging roofs, and on 15 June 2023 an EF2 near Oak Harbor damaged five homes, several of which lost their roofs. Non-thunderstorm wind matters too: a 71 mph gust in Sandusky on 30 December 2019, and a roof blown off a commercial building on the south side in December 2021. With a third of Ottawa County’s homes used seasonally, storm damage can go unnoticed for weeks while water gets in.

A Sandusky roof replacement permit costs $100 for work under $10,000 and $150 above that, and doubles if filed after work starts. The city enforces the Residential Code of Ohio with a 115 mph design wind speed, a 20 psf ground snow load and a required ice barrier. Section 908 of that code requires a replacement to remove existing layers down to the deck, and allows a recover only over an old roof that is not water soaked or deteriorated, is not slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile, and does not already have two or more layers. Outside the city, whether a reroof needs a permit depends on whether a certified building department covers the address.

Ohio issues no roofing licence, so the City of Sandusky’s register does the work: every contractor must register with the Building Division, carrying $300,000 of liability insurance, workers’ compensation and city tax registration, renewed each year, and all four ranked firms are on it through December 2026. Ohio has no ban on deductible rebates and no special cancellation right after a claim denial, but you can cancel a door-to-door sale until midnight of the third business day, and only a licensed public adjuster may be paid to handle your claim. On a replacement cost policy, Ohio Adm. Code 3901-1-54(I)(1)(b) requires the insurer to replace as much of a non-matching item as needed for a reasonably comparable appearance.

Horvath Roofing, nine miles away in Huron, covers residential replacement and repair, skylights, gutters and commercial roofing across the whole metro, with 245 GAF reviews averaging 4.8. North Coast Roofing of Ohio, on Tiffin Avenue, is the only Master Elite firm based in the city and lists storm damage, standing seam metal, roof coatings and commercial work. Premier Roofing & Siding suits a roof replaced alongside siding, though roofing is one of several trades. Tusing Builders in Monroeville leans commercial and flat roofing, and its reviews describe home roof replacements too.

The 98 wind reports that shape a Sandusky roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the Sandusky, OH statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 17 hail reports, 98 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 6 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $3.7 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Sandusky in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
12 August 2023 1.75 in Wilmer Erie
12 August 2023 1.75 in Weyers Erie
15 June 2023 1.25 in Limestone Ottawa
20 July 2023 1.25 in Lakeshore Ottawa
15 August 2019 1.0 in Rocky Ridge Ottawa
15 June 2023 1.0 in Oak Harbor Ottawa

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 12 August 2023 near Wilmer, measured at 1.75 inches. That is ping-pong-ball sized, enough to bruise asphalt shingles and shorten a roof’s life without necessarily looking dramatic from the ground.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 74 knots, about 85 mph, near Sandusky on 5 June 2016. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 6 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Strongs Ridge on 15 June 2023.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 5 June 2016 event near Sandusky, reproduced verbatim:

A thunderstorm downburst caused widespread wind damage in the northeast portion of Sandusky. The damage swatg was a half mile wide and approximately 2.25 miles long. Numerous large trees and limbs were brought down across the city with some falling on buildings causing roof damage. Numerous large trees were also downed at Battery Park and the Marina. Approximately 30 power poles were blown over on the causeway to Cedar Point. Some power lines landed on cars trapping 15 to 20 people in their vehicles. Power outages due to the downed lines caused Cedar Point to be closed for the following day. At least one site measured a wind gust to 76 mph. Estimated wind speeds based on damage were 70 to…

That account is the design case for a roof here, and it comes from the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in August (40), July (25), June (22). The worst years on record were 2023 (34), 2019 (22), 2020 (19). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Sandusky, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Sandusky. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

Weather off the lake: Lake Erie wind, not hail, takes roofs off around Sandusky Bay

Hail is modest here: in ten years Erie and Ottawa counties logged 17 hail reports and none of 2 inches or more, the largest golf-ball size on Sandusky’s south side in August 2023. Wind dominates, with 98 thunderstorm wind reports, 28 of them at 67 mph or more, plus ten high wind events filed for the lakeshore forecast zones.

The defining storm came on 5 June 2016, when a downburst cut a half-mile-wide, 2.25-mile swath through northeast Sandusky. Trees fell on buildings and damaged roofs, about 30 power poles blew over on the Cedar Point causeway, winds were estimated at 70 to 80 mph downtown and above 80 on the causeway, and $2.0 million was recorded.

Strong wind comes without thunderstorms too. On 24 February 2019 the Erie-Ottawa airport measured a 59 mph gust and several buildings in Port Clinton had roof or wall damage; on 30 December 2019 a 71 mph gust was recorded in Sandusky and an elementary school roof in Milan was heavily damaged; and in December 2021 a roof blew off a commercial building on Sandusky’s south side.

2023 was the outlier year, with 34 of the decade’s 121 hail, wind and tornado reports. On 15 June an EF2 tornado with peak winds of 130 mph tracked 3.4 miles near Oak Harbor, damaging five homes, several of which lost their roofs, and destroying seven barns. On 24 August a 90 mph EF1 came ashore at Beulah Beach in Vermilion Township, partially destroying a home, the same night flash flooding filled hundreds of basements across Erie County.

With a third of Ottawa County’s homes used seasonally, storm damage can go unnoticed for weeks while water gets in. If you own a lake cottage, arrange for someone to check the roof after high wind, keep photos of its condition, and inside Sandusky confirm your roofer is on the city’s published register before signing.

The checks worth making in Sandusky

There is no state roofing licence in OH. Ohio issues no state roofing contractor licence; its Construction Industry Licensing Board covers only HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, plumbing and hydronics contractors. A roofing business registers its entity or trade name with the Secretary of State and must carry workers’ compensation if it has employees, but there is no state trade exam or board for roofers.

Regulation is municipal: many Ohio cities run their own contractor registration, usually requiring liability insurance and workers’ compensation and sometimes a bond, and the Residential Code of Ohio is enforced only where a certified residential building department exists. Ohio has no roof-specific insurance statute: the Home Solicitation Sales Act gives three business days to cancel a door-to-door sale, and only a certified public adjuster may be paid to adjust a property claim.

That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.

Check here: Ohio Secretary of State business search. Because Ohio licenses nobody at state level, check registration with the specific municipality where the work will happen, and lean harder on manufacturer certification and insurance verification.

For what a full replacement costs across Ohio, including state labor rates and permit rules, see our Ohio roof replacement cost guide.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How many certified roofers Sandusky actually has

4 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Sandusky, OH statistical area, of which 0 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 421 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.75. How these Sandusky rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Sandusky, OH pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 4 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 2 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.75. The top four were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Anything unflattering that research surfaced appears above alongside the rest, and no company bought its position.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. The questions that come up most in Sandusky

Who is the best roofer in Sandusky, OH?

Horvath Roofing of Huron, OH scores highest in the Sandusky metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score, at 78.5 out of 100 as of October 2026. It holds Master Elite certification with a 4.8 rating across 245 reviews. Highest-scoring is not the same as best fit for your specific job, and the three companies behind it score within 22.3 points.

What is the 25% rule for roofing in Ohio?

Ohio has no 25 percent roof rule. Under Section 908 of the Residential Code of Ohio, a replacement removes existing layers down to the deck, and a recover is allowed only over a sound roof that does not already have two or more layers. What people often confuse with a 25 percent rule is Ohio’s insurance matching rule, Ohio Adm. Code 3901-1-54(I)(1)(b).

Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Sandusky?

Yes. A Sandusky roof replacement permit costs $100 for work under $10,000 and $150 above that, and the fee doubles if the permit is filed after work starts. Outside the city, whether a reroof needs a permit depends on whether a certified building department covers the address.

How do I know if a roofer in Sandusky is good?

Inside Sandusky, confirm the roofer is on the city’s published contractor register, which requires $300,000 of liability insurance, workers’ compensation and city tax registration. All four ranked firms here are registered through December 2026. Because Ohio licenses nobody at state level, lean harder on manufacturer certification, insurance verification and BBB records.

The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Sandusky, OH statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 1.75 inches, reported near Wilmer on 12 August 2023. That is ping-pong-ball sized, enough to bruise asphalt shingles and shorten a roof’s life without necessarily looking dramatic from the ground. Across the decade the metro recorded 17 hail reports. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $3.7 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Sandusky?

Severe-weather reports in the Sandusky, OH statistical area cluster in August, July, June, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Booking non-urgent roof work outside those months usually means shorter lead times, because local crews are not simultaneously triaging storm callouts.

Do roofers need a licence in OH?

What should I check before hiring a roofer in Sandusky?

Because Ohio licenses nobody at state level, check registration with the specific municipality where the work will happen, and lean harder on manufacturer certification and insurance verification.

Weather off the lake: Lake Erie wind, not hail, takes roofs off around Sandusky Bay?

Hail is modest here: in ten years Erie and Ottawa counties logged 17 hail reports and none of 2 inches or more, the largest golf-ball size on Sandusky’s south side in August 2023. Wind dominates, with 98 thunderstorm wind reports, 28 of them at 67 mph or more, plus ten high wind events filed for the lakeshore forecast zones.

Is Sandusky a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Around Sandusky Bay the roof threat comes off Lake Erie: wind reports outnumber hail nearly six to one, a 2016 downburst cut a two-mile swath through northeast Sandusky, and a 2023 EF2 near Oak Harbor took roofs off homes. A third of Ottawa County’s homes are seasonal, so damage can sit unseen for weeks. Ohio licenses no roofers, but the City of Sandusky publishes a live register of every contractor allowed to work there.

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Sandusky?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Sandusky, OH statistical area logged 98 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 13 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
