How deep should attic insulation be?
Most attics should carry roughly 13 to 20 inches of insulation, enough to reach R-38 to R-60 depending on your climate zone. The single fastest visual test is the joist rule: if you can see the top of the wooden joists, you almost certainly need more. Standard attic joists are 2×8 or 2×10 lumber, which are only 7.25 and 9.25 inches tall, and current recommendations sit well above that line.

Where should attic insulation sit, the floor or the roof?
In a standard vented attic the insulation should sit on the attic floor, between and over the joists, with the roof deck left bare and the space above it ventilated. Insulation stapled to the underside of the roof only belongs in a conditioned attic that was deliberately sealed and foamed, where the whole space is brought inside the building envelope.
Placement decides whether the attic breathes correctly. Two visual rules apply:
