What are aluminum gutters?

Aluminum gutters are lightweight troughs roll-formed from coated aluminum coil, most often 0.027-inch or heavier 0.032-inch stock. They are the most installed residential gutter in the United States because they are inexpensive, will not rust, come in dozens of baked-on colors, and can be run seamless from a truck-mounted machine. Aluminum forms a thin oxide layer that protects the metal, so it holds up in coastal and humid climates where bare steel would corrode. The trade-offs are a softer body that dents and a higher rate of thermal expansion that can stress long runs and seams.

What are steel gutters?

Steel gutters are troughs formed from coated sheet steel, and the coating is what decides how long they last. All steel is stronger and more dent-resistant than aluminum, but “steel” on a quote can mean three very different products, so the type matters more than the label.

  • Galvanized steel is carbon steel with a zinc coating. It is the cheapest steel option and commonly lasts about 20 to 30 years, but once the zinc wears through at cut edges or scratches, the base steel rusts.
  • Galvalume steel is coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy that resists corrosion far better than plain zinc, often cited at roughly two to four times the coating life of galvanized. Galvalume gutters can push past 30 to 50 years in many climates.
  • Stainless steel is the premium, corrosion-resistant option that can last 50-plus years with little maintenance, but it is expensive and uncommon on residential jobs.

Steel is heavier than aluminum, roughly three times the weight for a comparable profile, so a steel system needs more hangers and stronger fascia support.

How much do steel and aluminum gutters cost?

Aluminum is the budget pick and steel is the premium pick, with steel typically costing 30% to 100% more installed. Aluminum runs about $6 to $13 per linear foot installed, while steel runs about $9 to $20 per linear foot depending on the coating, gauge, and the extra labor the added weight requires.

Cost per year of service

  • Aluminum: about $9 per linear foot installed over 25 years is roughly $0.36 per foot per year.
  • Galvanized steel: about $12 per linear foot installed over 25 years is roughly $0.48 per foot per year.
  • Galvalume steel: about $15 per linear foot installed over 40 years is roughly $0.38 per foot per year.

On a cost-per-year basis, aluminum and galvalume steel come out close, while galvanized steel is often the weakest value because its shorter coating life rarely justifies the higher upfront price. The math flips toward steel only where its strength prevents damage aluminum could not survive.

Which lasts longer and holds up better?

It depends on the type of steel. Galvalume and stainless steel outlast aluminum, while galvanized steel and aluminum are roughly even at 20 to 30 years. Aluminum wins on corrosion because it does not rust, but steel wins on physical toughness because it resists the dents, ladder loads, and ice-dam pressure that deform aluminum.

The failure modes differ. Aluminum rarely rusts but can corrode slightly at cut edges, dents easily, and can crack or pull at seams after years of thermal cycling. Steel does not dent, but galvanized steel rusts once the zinc is breached, and any steel gutter is heavier on its hangers over time. In hail country, heavy-snow regions, or spots where ladders and equipment constantly bump the gutter, steel’s strength is the deciding advantage. Aluminum expands and contracts about twice as much as steel for the same temperature change, and that single fact drives several long-run problems competitors rarely mention. Aluminum has a coefficient of thermal expansion near 13 millionths per degree Fahrenheit, while steel sits near 6.5, so a long aluminum run moves noticeably more between a freezing night and a hot afternoon.

Two practical consequences follow. First, long aluminum runs are more prone to seam stress, sealant fatigue, and visible “oil canning” or waviness, which is one reason seamless aluminum is preferred, since fewer joints mean fewer places for expansion to open a leak. Installation differences that affect cost and longevity

Installation is where these two diverge most. Aluminum is light enough to be run seamless on site from a portable machine, so a long run has few joints. Steel is heavier and harder to form, so it is more often installed in sections with sealed or riveted joints, and it needs more support.

  1. Confirm the coating on any steel quote. Ask whether it is galvanized, galvalume, or stainless, because the lifespan and price swing widely between them.

The mixed-metal problem to watch

Dissimilar metals in contact can set up galvanic corrosion that eats the less-noble metal, so the gutter material should be considered alongside the roof and fasteners it will touch. Aluminum and bare or galvanized steel in direct contact, especially with water present, can corrode faster than either would alone.

Two rules keep this in check. First, match fasteners and hangers to the gutter metal where possible, and avoid pairing bare steel components with aluminum ones.   • Choose aluminum if you want the lowest practical cost, a seamless run, a specific paint color, rust immunity in a humid or coastal climate, or you are outfitting a rental or a home you may sell within a decade.
  • Choose galvalume or stainless steel if you live in hail country or heavy-snow and ice-dam regions, have long runs or high-abuse areas where dent resistance pays off, and you want a service life that can beat aluminum.
  • Be cautious with galvanized steel because it costs more than aluminum but often does not last longer, so it makes sense mainly where you specifically want steel’s strength at the lowest steel price and can accept eventual rust.
