A splash block is a shaped concrete or plastic tray set under a downspout to catch the discharge, spread it out, and carry it a foot or two away from the wall so it does not dig a trench or pool against the foundation. It is the cheapest downspout accessory sold, and on the right house in the right spot it does a real job. But it is also the most misused: the wrong material blows out of place, the wrong slope sends water back toward the wall, and on many homes a block that only moves water two feet is simply not enough. What a splash block does (and does not do)
A splash block sits directly beneath the downspout outlet, usually under the lower elbow. Its job is twofold: dissipate the energy of concentrated roof runoff so it stops eroding the soil at the discharge point, and redirect that water a short distance away from the building on a downhill pitch. The block is passive, has no moving parts, and needs no power or maintenance beyond an occasional reset after mowing or frost heave.
What it does not do is carry water far. A typical block discharges roughly 18 to 36 inches from the wall. Foundation-drainage guidance commonly calls for getting roof water 4 to 6 feet away, and in problem soils farther still, so a splash block on its own often leaves the discharge inside the zone where water can still migrate back toward the footing. Treat it as an erosion-control and short-throw device, not as a complete foundation-drainage solution. Where clearance is short or the ground pitches back toward the house, a block alone will not protect the basement or crawlspace.
Concrete vs. plastic splash blocks
The two common materials behave differently on almost every axis that matters in the field: whether they stay put, how long they last, and how they look. Neither is universally better. The practical rule most installers follow: if the block sits in the open, on a slope, or anywhere wind and sheeting water can push it, choose concrete for the mass. If it lives in a mulched bed where it will be hidden and rarely disturbed, a plastic block is fine and easier to seat, provided you stake or weight it so a heavy storm does not lift it.
Sizing a splash block
Splash blocks are sold by length and outlet width. Common lengths run about 24, 30, and 36 inches, with widths around 10 to 12 inches to sit under a standard downspout. Size the block to the volume of water and the erosion you are seeing, not just to what is cheapest:
- Standard 24-inch block: adequate for a short downspout serving a small roof plane on well-draining, near-level soil.
- Longer 30 to 36-inch block: better where the downspout drains a large roof area, where you have seen a wash-out crater at the outlet, or where you need to clear a walkway or narrow bed before the water hits soil.
- Outlet width: match the trough opening to your downspout. A 2×3-inch downspout and a 3×4-inch downspout move very different volumes; the larger downspout benefits from a wider, longer block so the higher flow is spread rather than fired out the end in a single stream.
Remember that a longer block buys only a modest gain in distance. If you need water several feet out, adding length to the block is the wrong lever; a downspout extension or buried drain is. How to place a splash block correctly
Most splash-block failures are placement failures, not product failures. The block is only as good as the grade under it and its alignment to the outlet. Work through these steps:
- Fix the grade first. The soil should fall away from the wall. A widely cited target is about 6 inches of drop over the first 10 feet, roughly a 5 percent slope, where site conditions allow. If the ground pitches back toward the house, no splash block will help until you regrade.
- Seat the block on firm, tamped soil. Set it on compacted earth or a thin bed of gravel so it does not settle unevenly. A block that sinks at the far end will pond water and send it back toward the wall.
- Pitch the block itself downhill. The trough must tilt away from the house so water runs to the discharge end. Confirm with a level; even a slight reverse pitch defeats the block.
- Align the inlet under the downspout. Position the raised inlet end directly beneath the downspout elbow so the full stream lands in the trough, not beside it. A block offset even a few inches lets water bypass it and cut a channel.
- Anchor a lightweight block. For plastic, drive a stake or landscape spike through the provided holes, or set a paver on the tail, so storm flow cannot float or walk it out of position.
- Check the landing zone. Where the water leaves the block should be planted, mulched, graveled, or otherwise armored. Bare soil at the discharge end just moves the erosion crater 2 feet out instead of eliminating it.
Recheck placement seasonally. Freeze heave, mowing, and foot traffic all nudge blocks out of alignment, which is why a device that needs no maintenance still needs an occasional reset.
Alternatives to a splash block
Because a splash block only throws water a foot or two, it is often a starting point rather than the final answer. Depending on how far you need water to travel and how the yard drains, consider these instead of or in addition to a block:

A reasonable decision rule: if you have good grade and only need to stop a small wash-out at the outlet, a splash block is enough. If you have persistent basement moisture, poor grade you cannot fix, or clay soil that holds water, move to an extension or buried system and use the block, if at all, only as the visible transition at the downspout.
