The attic ventilation 1/300 rule is an exception in the International Residential Code, not the baseline. IRC Section R806.2 sets the minimum net free ventilating area at 1/150 of the area of the vented space, then permits 1/300 only when the conditions in the exception are satisfied. Miss those conditions and the required opening area doubles.

What IRC R806.2 actually says about 1/300
R806.2 opens with a single sentence: “The minimum net free ventilating area shall be 1/150 of the area of the vented space.” The 1/300 ratio appears only in the exception below it. That exception reads: “The minimum net free ventilation area shall be 1/300 of the vented space provided both of the following conditions are met.” The word “both” is doing the work, and it is the word most summaries drop.
The two conditions, quoted from the 2021 and 2024 editions of the IRC, are these.

Vapor retarder classes come from the IRC Chapter 2 definition, measured by the desiccant method under Procedure A of ASTM E96: Class I is 0.1 perm or less, Class II is greater than 0.1 and not more than 1.0 perm. Kraft-faced batts and vapor retarder paint are the common Class II answers. Climate Zones are assigned by county in IRC Figure N1101.7 and Table N1101.7.
Why the 1/300 ratio is conditional, not automatic
Two readings circulate online and both misstate the code. The first says you need a ceiling vapor retarder anywhere in the country to claim 1/300. The second says either condition alone is enough on its own. The published text says “both,” and condition 1 is written with a climate zone qualifier, so the practical result splits along the map.
- Climate Zones 1 to 5: condition 1 has no work to do. Meeting the 40 to 50 percent upper vent split under condition 2 is what gets you to 1/300.
- Climate Zones 6, 7 and 8: you need the Class I or II vapor retarder on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling and the 40 to 50 percent upper vent split. Fail either one and 1/150 governs.
- Any zone, vents all low or all high: a soffit-only or gable-only system cannot satisfy condition 2, so the attic is on 1/150 regardless of climate.
Interpretation of the 40 to 50 percent window is not perfectly settled among building officials, and some jurisdictions amend R806 outright. Confirm the adopted edition and any local amendment with your authority having jurisdiction before you size a system on the exception.
The 1/300 rule worked out: a 1,800 square foot attic
Take a simple gable roof over a 45 by 40 foot footprint, so 1,800 square feet of vented attic, with a 45 foot ridge. At 1/300 the attic needs 864 square inches of net free area. Here is the full arithmetic, step by step, with no rounding hidden in the middle.
- Measure the vented space. The code says “the area of the vented space,” which for a standard vented attic is the horizontal ceiling area under the attic, not the sloped roof surface. A 45 by 40 foot footprint gives 1,800 square feet.
- Divide by the governing ratio. 1,800 / 300 = 6.0 square feet of net free area required.
- Convert to square inches. Vent products are rated in square inches, so multiply by 144. 6.0 x 144 = 864 square inches required.
- Split high and low per condition 2. Upper vents must supply 40 to 50 percent of 864, which is 345.6 to 432 square inches. The balance goes in the bottom one-third of the attic.
- Convert each side to product counts using published NFA. Divide the target square inches by the manufacturer’s rated net free area per unit or per linear foot, then round up.
Running step 5 with real products: Air Vent’s ShingleVent II ridge vent carries a net free ventilation area of 18 square inches per lineal foot per ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-2071. At the 50 percent ceiling, 432 / 18 = 24 linear feet of ridge vent. On the intake side, Air Vent’s 16 by 8 inch aluminum undereave vent is published at 56 square inches of net free area each, so 432 / 56 = 7.7, which rounds to 8 vents delivering 448 square inches. Swap to continuous soffit intake at Air Vent’s published 9 square inches per linear foot and you need 432 / 9 = 48 linear feet of soffit vent.
Same house at 1/150: what the arithmetic actually costs
Lose the exception and every number doubles. The 1,800 square foot attic jumps from 864 to 1,728 square inches of required net free area. The exhaust side alone climbs to 864 square inches, which is 48 linear feet of 18 square inch ridge vent on a roof that only has 45 feet of ridge to work with.

That last row is the reason the exception matters commercially. At 1/150 this roof cannot reach the exhaust target with ridge vent alone, so the design has to add off ridge or static vents, and the eave has to carry twice the intake. The choice between the two ratios is a real materials and labor difference on the same house.
Net free area, not vent size, is the governing number
R806.2 regulates net free ventilating area, which is the tested open area of a vent after screens, baffles, filters and louvers are accounted for. A 16 by 8 inch undereave vent is 128 square inches of sheet metal and 56 square inches of net free area, so its rated figure is roughly 44 percent of its footprint. Sizing off the hole in the soffit rather than the rating is the single most common way a code compliant looking install comes up short.
Pull the number from the manufacturer’s published data sheet or the product’s ICC-ES evaluation report, never from the physical dimensions. Ratings also vary within a product family: Air Vent lists 18 square inches per lineal foot for ShingleVent II and 16 square inches per lineal foot for the ShingleVent II-7 and II-9 profiles, per ESR-2071. Sizing a job on the wrong profile in the same catalog can undershoot by 11 percent. Where the 1/300 arithmetic quietly breaks
The 40 to 50 percent window is a band, not a floor, and ridge vent ships in fixed lengths. On the 1,800 square foot attic, ShingleVent II comes in 4 foot pieces at 18 square inches per foot, so each piece adds 72 square inches. Only two piece counts land inside the window.

Three failure modes follow from that table. Running the ridge vent the full 45 feet because it looks cleaner puts upper area at 810 square inches, or 94 percent of required, which fails condition 2 and drops the attic back to 1/150. Adding a pair of box vents or a gable louver on top of an already sized ridge run does the same thing. And rounding up “for margin” on the exhaust side is the one place in this calculation where more is not safer.
The intake side has its own trap. Condition 2 requires the balance in the bottom one-third of the attic, and IRC R806.3 requires not less than a 1 inch space between insulation and the roof sheathing at the vent. Blown insulation drifted over the eave turns a compliant soffit vent into zero effective intake, which is why attic insulation baffles belong in the same scope of work as the vents. Note also that R806.2 does not apply to unvented assemblies built under R806.5, which have their own insulation and vapor control rules instead of a ratio.
Required net free area by attic size
Both ratios, run for common attic footprints, with the exhaust side sized at the 50 percent ceiling and converted into 18 square inch per foot ridge vent and 56 square inch undereave vents. Numbers assume the vented space area equals the ceiling area below the attic.

Is the 1/300 rule the code default for attic ventilation?
No. IRC Section R806.2 states the minimum net free ventilating area shall be 1/150 of the area of the vented space. The 1/300 ratio sits in the exception directly beneath that sentence and applies only when both listed conditions are met. Treating 1/300 as the starting point is the most common way an attic ends up undersized by half.
Do I need a vapor retarder to use the 1/300 attic ventilation rule?
Only in Climate Zones 6, 7 and 8, where the exception requires a Class I or II vapor retarder on the warm-in-winter side of the ceiling. In Climate Zones 1 through 5 that condition carries no requirement, so qualifying for 1/300 turns on the second condition, the 40 to 50 percent upper vent split. Local amendments can change this.
Is the 1/300 ratio based on attic floor area or roof surface area?
The code text says “the area of the vented space,” which for a standard vented attic is taken as the horizontal ceiling area below the attic rather than the sloped roof surface. Using roof area instead inflates the requirement, because a 6/12 pitch adds about 12 percent of surface over the same footprint. Confirm the interpretation with your building official.
How much net free area does an 1,800 square foot attic need at 1/300?
864 square inches. Divide 1,800 by 300 to get 6.0 square feet, then multiply by 144 to convert to square inches. Under the exception, 345.6 to 432 square inches of that must come from vents in the upper portion of the attic within 3 feet of the ridge, and the balance goes in the bottom one-third of the attic space.
How many linear feet of ridge vent does the 1/300 rule require?
Divide the upper portion target by the vent’s rated net free area per linear foot. For an 1,800 square foot attic at 1/300, the 50 percent upper target is 432 square inches. Against Air Vent’s ShingleVent II at 18 square inches per lineal foot per ICC-ES report ESR-2071, that is 24 linear feet. Different profiles rate differently, so check the specific model.
What happens if exhaust exceeds 50 percent of the required area?
The second condition of the R806.2 exception is no longer met, so the attic reverts to the 1/150 requirement and the total net free area needed doubles. Running ridge vent the full length of a ridge, or adding box vents on top of a sized ridge run, is the usual cause. On the exhaust side of this calculation, more is not automatically safer.
Does the 1/300 rule apply to unvented attics?
No. Unvented attic and unvented enclosed rafter assemblies are built under IRC R806.5, which replaces the ventilation ratio with conditions on air impermeable insulation, vapor retarder placement, and in Climate Zones 1 through 3 a vapor diffusion port sized at not less than 1:600 of the ceiling area. A sealed attic is a different code path, not a waiver of R806.2.
