F-Wave Shingles Review: REVIA Specs, Cost and Warranty

F-Wave shingles review: verified REVIA and REVIA XTM specs, Class 4 and FM 4475 hail data, wind warranty fastener tiers, code approvals and 2026 cost.

F-Wave shingles are single-piece synthetic polymer roofing shingles made by FWave LLC of Burleson, Texas, sold under the REVIA brand. They contain no asphalt and no granules, carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, and reach Class A fire only as part of a specified assembly. The current lineup splits into two products that most reviews still treat as one: the original nail-on REVIA and the newer interlocking REVIA XTM.

What are F-Wave REVIA shingles?

REVIA shingles are molded from a proprietary blend of synthetic polymers to imitate slate, shake, or dimensional shingle profiles, per Intertek Code Compliance Research Report CCRR-0607. Each shingle is one piece with no granular surfacing and no asphalt layer, which removes the two failure modes that age conventional shingles: granule loss and asphalt embrittlement. The nominal shingle measures 39-1/4 inches long by 14-3/8 inches wide.

Coverage math is simple and consistent across every profile. F-Wave’s published product flyers list 10 shingles per bundle and 60 shingles per square, so a square takes six bundles. Exposure is 6.1 inches on the flyer and 6 inches in the code report, with six fasteners per shingle in all applications.

Four profiles are offered: Classic Slate, Designer Slate American Blends, Designer Slate Estate Series, and Hand-Split Shake. Colors are molded through rather than surface-applied, which is why F-Wave writes a separate color fade clause into its warranty instead of a granule loss clause.

REVIA vs REVIA XTM: the split most F-Wave reviews miss

F-Wave now sells two distinct REVIA products, and the performance gap between them is large. Original REVIA is a conventional nail-on shingle rated 150 mph with a 130 mph wind warranty. REVIA XTM adds integrated front-edge and nail-line hooks that mechanically interlock, which F-Wave’s flyers say makes it the first FM 4475 Very Severe Hail rated shingle with warranted coverage, carrying a 180 mph wind warranty with ring shank nails and an unlimited wind warranty with screws.

Almost every F-Wave review still online describes the original REVIA specs only. If a contractor quotes you “F-Wave, Class 4, 130 mph,” that is the older product. Ask which one is on the estimate, because the two carry different underlayment requirements and different wind warranty ceilings.

The underlayment line matters to your bid. F-Wave’s Class A Fire Rating technical bulletin (document CA012726TB) requires a double layer of GAF Tiger Paw under original REVIA for a Class A assembly, but only a single layer under XTM. On a 30 square roof that is roughly 30 squares of underlayment and the labor to lay it, removed from the XTM job.

How impact resistant are F-Wave shingles really?

Both REVIA products hold UL 2218 Class 4, the top impact class available to roof coverings. REVIA XTM goes further with FM 4475 Very Severe Hail, which F-Wave states represents twice the impact toughness of a UL 2218 Class 4 or FM 4473 Class 4 test. That is a meaningfully different claim from the Class 4 badge that dozens of shingles carry.

F-Wave’s Very Severe Hail technical bulletin (VSH042226TB) publishes the raw test data rather than just the pass. Two-inch diameter ice balls weighing roughly 64 to 68 grams were fired sequentially at the same spot at 153 to 162 feet per second, delivering 53.9 to 57.7 ft-lb of impact energy. Every impact was recorded as no visible cracking or breakage.

The detail worth knowing: the same test was repeated on aged samples, not just fresh ones. F-Wave reports results on non-weathered shingles, on shingles after 1,000 hours of UV exposure, and on shingles after 1,000 hours of UV plus 1,000 hours of heat exposure. Impact ratings on conventional shingles are typically established on new product, so published aged-sample results are unusual and are the strongest technical argument in F-Wave’s file.

Class 4 status is also what makes these shingles relevant to insurance. Many carriers offer impact-resistant roof credits, and both State Farm and the Texas Department of Insurance maintain product lists and installation certification forms that F-Wave links from its own resources page. Whether a credit applies to your policy depends on carrier, state, and policy form, so confirm before you buy on that basis. F-Wave wind ratings and the fastener tier that sets your warranty

With REVIA XTM, the fastener chosen on the job site determines the wind warranty you get. It is not a property of the shingle. F-Wave’s Fastener Requirements bulletin (FR042226TB) defines three tiers, and using the wrong fastener quietly drops your coverage ceiling without changing anything you can see from the ground.

Common requirements apply at every tier. Six corrosion resistant fasteners per shingle in all applications. Fasteners must penetrate at least 3/4 inch into the deck or 1/16 inch through it. Heads must sit flush without cutting the shingle, and no fastener may be visible on the finished roof. Staples are not an approved fastening method in any situation, and F-Wave recommends 100 to 120 PSI on the nail gun.

One installation warning from the same bulletin is worth repeating to your crew: each shingle must be positioned and aligned before the first nail goes in, because adjusting it afterward can bow the shingle.

Independently, Intertek CCRR-0607 classifies REVIA XTM as Class F under ASTM D3161 and establishes a wind uplift resistance of 96 psf by TAS 125 testing, with TAS 100 wind-driven rain compliance under the 2023 Florida Building Code.

Is F-Wave Class A fire rated?

F-Wave REVIA and REVIA XTM shingles are Class A rated only when installed as part of a specified Class A roofing assembly, not on their own. This distinction trips up buyers who read “Class A” on a flyer and assume it travels with the product. Class A is the maximum fire classification a roof covering can hold, tested under ASTM E108 or the equivalent UL 790.

Per F-Wave’s fire bulletin, the assembly requirement differs by product line. All four original REVIA profiles need a double layer of GAF Tiger Paw underlayment to reach Class A. All four XTM profiles need only a single layer. CCRR-0607 confirms XTM as a Class A roof covering over combustible decks under IBC Section 1505.1 and IRC R902.1 with one layer of GAF Tiger Paw (ESR-2808).

Original REVIA can also be installed to a Class B assembly using a single layer of synthetic underlayment complying with ASTM D226. If your jurisdiction or your insurer requires Class A, that shortcut is not available to you.

Where is F-Wave REVIA code approved?

REVIA XTM holds Intertek Code Compliance Research Report CCRR-0607, issued 29 May 2025, revised 15 July 2026, with a renewal date of 31 May 2027. It addresses compliance with the 2024, 2021, and 2018 International Building Code and International Residential Code, plus the 2023 Florida Building Code including High-Velocity Hurricane Zones.

The report treats REVIA XTM as an alternate material under IBC Section 104.2.3.6.1 and IRC Section R104.2.2.6.1, which is the standard route for a product with no prescriptive code path of its own. F-Wave also lists Intertek CCRR-0283 covering the 2015 and 2018 IBC and IRC, and Florida Building Code approval FL #30436-R3.

Check the renewal date before a permit submittal. Evaluation reports lapse, and a plans examiner working from an expired report number is a delay you can avoid by pulling the current PDF from F-Wave’s resources page.

What do F-Wave shingles cost in 2026?

F-Wave does not publish list pricing, and contractor-published installed figures for 2026 disagree widely enough that any single number should be treated as a starting point, not a quote. Published ranges from roofing contractors sit roughly between $12 and $25 per square foot installed, with Kickapoo Roofing’s January 2026 cost page naming about $20 per square foot as an average.

Other contractors frame it comparatively instead. Texas Direct Roofing’s 2026 review puts F-Wave materials at two to three times asphalt, roughly $300 to $400 more per square, with labor in the $3 to $7 per square foot band, and illustrates a whole roof at $30,000 to $50,000 against $15,000 to $25,000 for asphalt.

Those two framings do not reconcile cleanly, which tells you something useful: synthetic shingle pricing is driven more by roof complexity, region, and installer familiarity than by a national material price. Three cost factors are specific to F-Wave rather than generic. Original REVIA requires two layers of underlayment for Class A, which XTM does not. The unlimited wind warranty requires screws rather than nails, which is slower labor. And XTM has no minimum installation temperature, so a winter install does not have to wait for a 50 degree day, which can be worth more than the material premium if you are re-roofing after a fall storm.

F-Wave warranty terms buyers should read before signing

The headline “50 year” figure describes total duration, not the period of full coverage. Under F-Wave’s WeatherForce Advantage Standard Product Limited Warranty, non-prorated protection runs 15 years on a single-family detached home owned by individuals, then drops to 50% prorated at the start of year 16 and declines linearly over 420 months. Labor is included only during the non-prorated period.

Every other structure type, including anything owned by an entity rather than individuals, is on a shorter clock: 10 years non-prorated, then 50% prorated from the start of year 11, declining over 360 months to year 40. The warranty applies to steep-slope roofs at 4:12 pitch or greater.

The hail clause carries the conditions most likely to surprise a claimant. Coverage runs five years, applies to single-family detached homes only, and covers hailstones up to 2.0 inches in outer diameter. The owner must contact F-Wave within 30 days of the first hail impact occurrence. And per the warranty text, a storm producing hail larger than 2 inches in outer diameter, for any length of time, within 10 miles of the property address voids the hail impact coverage.

Read that last condition against your own hail history. In parts of the southern Plains, a 2-inch-plus event within a 10 mile radius is not a rare occurrence, and the clause is written around the storm rather than around the damage to your roof. The underlying Class 4 shingle still performs; it is the supplemental hail coverage that ends.

Algae coverage is also narrower than most buyers assume. It addresses brown-black staining from blue-green algae specifically, and F-Wave excludes mold, lichen, moss, and green algae from that clause.

Transfer is allowed once during the warranty’s life for a $250 fee, and the second owner must contact F-Wave within 60 days of the real estate transfer. If the transfer happens after the non-prorated period ends, the remaining balance is reduced to two years from the transfer date. Terms vary by document version, so confirm against the warranty PDF current on the date your roof is installed.

F-Wave installation requirements that change your bid

Several REVIA installation requirements add cost or exclude the product outright, and they are easier to catch before the contract than after. These come from F-Wave’s REVIA installation manual and technical bulletins.

  1. Deck minimums. F-Wave recommends at least 15/32 inch plywood or 7/16 inch OSB, on a smooth, flat, dry, nailable surface. Thin or cupped decking means a deck replacement line item.
  2. Slope limits. Installations below 2:12 are not allowed. Between 2:12 and 4:12 is a low-slope application requiring either full self-adhering waterproofing underlayment or two layers of synthetic underlayment across the entire low-slope surface.
  3. Waterproofing underlayment. A smooth-surfaced, non-granulated, self-adhering underlayment compliant with ASTM D1970 is required, and recommended at valleys, eaves, ridges, hips, penetrations, dormers, slope changes, skylights, and chimneys.
  4. Ice dam regions. Waterproofing underlayment must be applied at the eaves and extend at least 24 inches up the deck from the interior side of the exterior wall.
  5. Install temperature, original REVIA only. F-Wave requires installation at 50°F and rising with rooftop surface temperature above 74°F for the sealant to bond. Seal failure from cold installation is explicitly not treated as a manufacturing defect.
  6. Steep slopes and high wind zones. All tabs must be hand sealed or affixed with F-Wave Extreme Clips. Steep slope means greater than 21:12, which includes mansard roofs.
  7. Underlayment exclusions. Radiant barrier products are not approved as underlayment beneath REVIA, and asphalt-based underlayments are called out against in the manual.

Point 5 is the practical reason XTM exists. Removing the minimum install temperature turns a seasonally constrained product into a year-round one in northern markets.

Who should buy F-Wave, and who should not

F-Wave REVIA makes the most sense on a single-family detached home in a hail-exposed market where the owner plans to stay long enough to use the non-prorated window, and where an insurance impact credit offsets part of the premium. The aged-sample impact data and the XTM interlock are genuine engineering, not marketing.

It is a weaker fit in three situations. Commercial, rental, or entity-owned property loses hail coverage entirely and drops to a 10 year non-prorated window. Short-hold owners pay a synthetic premium and hand most of the warranty to the next buyer, minus a $250 transfer fee. And homeowners in repeated 2-inch-plus hail corridors should price the roof on the shingle’s tested performance rather than on the hail clause, since the clause can void on a nearby storm.
