By The Roofing Brief Team. Last reviewed: October 2026.
CertainTeed Landmark shingles are the company’s flagship architectural line, with standard Landmark bundles listed at about $37 to $47 at retailers on October 9, 2026 and three bundles covering one 100 sq ft square. The CertainTeed Landmark family includes Landmark (standard), Landmark PRO, Landmark Premium and the Class 4, SBS-modified Landmark ClimateFlex; the “+W26+” also lists the three-layer Landmark TL. Every tier carries the same 110 mph standard and 160 mph upgraded wind term; they split on weight, UL 2218 impact class, algae years (25 or 30) and whether SureStart pays for tear-off.
This is an independent review. It is compiled from CertainTeed’s published product brochures, specifications and warranty literature, the competing manufacturers’ published documents, and general market pricing. We did not run hands-on tests, inspect installations, interview installers or collect local bids, and prices are dated retail listings (seen through Google Shopping on October 9, 2026) or ranges from our 2026 Roofing Cost Report, and they vary by market. For how Landmark ranks against the wider field, see our best asphalt shingles roundup.
The short version
- Retail listings on October 9, 2026: Landmark $36.97 to $46.99 per bundle, Landmark PRO $51.99 to $64.75, Landmark Premium $52.75 to $69.75 and Landmark ClimateFlex $55.00. Installed, our 2026 Roofing Cost Report puts architectural asphalt at about $5 to $8 per sq ft and Class 4 impact shingles at about $8 to $13.
- Landmark Pro is our value pick for most US homeowners. As of 2026 it carries a 30-year StreakFighter algae warranty (25 years on standard Landmark), among the strongest in the big-three.
- The wind warranty is 110 mph for 15 years as standard. CertainTeed’s 2026 Limited Warranty (Table 1) raises the Landmark family’s upgrade to 160 mph when CertainTeed starter goes on the eaves and rakes, CertainTeed hip and ridge caps the roof and the roof is not a roof-over; CertainTeed’s 2026 wind sell sheet also gives an Integrity Roof System unlimited wind velocity coverage. Landmark and Landmark PRO are Class 3 under UL 2218; Class 4 comes on Landmark ClimateFlex and Landmark TL.
- Landmark PRO weighs about 231 to 240 lb per square (CertainTeed TDS, 10/23), against 211 to 225 lb for standard Landmark (TDS, 08/24); the extra mass supports a deeper shadow line.
- ClimateFlex (SBS-modified) is the cold-weather story. Standard Landmark and Landmark Pro need warmth to self-seal like other non-SBS shingles; the SBS-modified Landmark ClimateFlex stays more flexible in the cold.
- Best for: humid-climate homeowners who want the longest mainstream algae warranty, and hail-belt residents who can step up to Landmark ClimateFlex for Class 4 plus a possible insurance discount. Not for: buyers who want top wind coverage without a full CertainTeed system; compare GAF’s WindProven (no maximum for 15 years, with LayerLock shingles and 4 qualifying GAF accessories) and OC Duration (up to 160 mph with OC components and starter on eaves and rakes).
The short answer: four Landmark tiers and pricing
CertainTeed sells the Landmark line in four main tiers, priced from $36.97 to $69.75 per bundle in October 9, 2026 listings. Most homeowners choose between Landmark Pro (Class 3, 30-year algae) and Landmark ClimateFlex (Class 4, the hail-belt upgrade). Standard Landmark is the entry tier at 211 to 225 lb per square, common on builder-grade and rental installations; Landmark Premium is the heavier-look tier, listed at 4 bundles per square, for renovations where shadow-line depth matters.
| Tier | Listed per bundle, Oct 9, 2026 | Weight per square | Wind warranty | Impact rating | Algae warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Landmark (standard) | $36.97 to $46.99 (Hill’s ACE, ASO, McCoy’s, Ring’s End) | 211 to 225 lbs (TDS 08/24) | 110 mph (160 with CT starter and hip and ridge, no roof-over) | Class 3 | 25 yrs (AR, with CT AR hip and ridge) |
| Landmark PRO | $51.99 to $64.75 (Ring’s End, Arbor) | 231 to 240 lbs (TDS 10/23) | 110 mph (160 with CT starter and hip and ridge, no roof-over) | Class 3 | 30 yrs (AR, with CT AR hip and ridge) |
| Landmark Premium | $52.75 to $69.75 (Arbor; listed at 4 bundles per square) | See CertainTeed TDS | 110 mph (160 with CT starter and hip and ridge, no roof-over) | Class 4 over a clean deck (per CertainTeed installation instructions) | 30 yrs (AR, with CT AR hip and ridge) |
| Landmark ClimateFlex | $55.00 (Arbor) | See CertainTeed TDS | 110 mph (160 with CT starter and hip and ridge, no roof-over) | Class 4 | 25 yrs (AR, with CT AR hip and ridge) |
Algae terms, the 110 mph standard term and the 160 mph upgrade are from CertainTeed’s 2026 Limited Warranty (Table 1, for installs from January 1 to December 31, 2026); impact classes are from each tier’s data sheet and the Landmark installation instructions, because the 2026 warranty refers impact questions to the TDS. Prices are single retailer listings. On a 30-square roof (90 bundles), the October 9 gap between the cheapest Landmark ($36.97) and cheapest Landmark PRO ($51.99) listing is about $1,350 in material. Premium rarely earns its price; the real comparisons are Standard versus Pro on budget, and Pro versus ClimateFlex in hail states.
Which CertainTeed Landmark shingles to buy: decision table
| If your roof or plan is… | Choose | Threshold or rule |
|---|---|---|
| A primary home in a humid region with algae streaks on nearby roofs | Landmark PRO AR | 30-year algae term (prorated after year 15) only with CertainTeed AR hip and ridge; otherwise 10 years |
| In a hail state where your carrier files a Class 4 credit | Landmark ClimateFlex | UL 2218 Class 4; payback = upgrade cost divided by the annual credit |
| A rental, outbuilding or a sale within 5 years | Landmark (standard) | Lifetime B: SureStart does not cover tear-off, transfer after SureStart limited to 2 years |
| Exposed to gusts above 110 mph | Any tier with the 160 mph upgrade | CertainTeed starter on eaves and rakes, CertainTeed hip and ridge, no roof-over |
| Sloped from 2:12 to below 4:12 | Any tier over a full-deck membrane | WinterGuard, VYCOR or ASTM D1970 over the whole deck; never below 2:12 |
| Steeper than 21:12 (mansard) | Any tier, steep-slope method | 6 nails plus 4 spots of roofing cement per shingle |
| Subject to a California Title 24 cool-roof rule | Landmark Solaris colors | CRRC-listed; Graphite aged SRI 20, Weathered Wood 21 |

Landmark Standard: entry-level architectural
Standard Landmark is the dimensional shingle at the entry of the line. CertainTeed’s data sheet (08/24) lists 211 to 225 pounds per square, depending on the plant.
The shingle uses standard (non-SBS) asphalt and shares Landmark PRO’s 13 1/4 x 38 3/4 in size, 5 5/8 in exposure and 3 bundles per square, per both data sheets. The differences are weight (211 to 225 lb against 231 to 240 lb), algae term (25 against 30 years) and warranty class: Landmark is a Lifetime B product, so its SureStart period does not pay for tear-off, while PRO is Lifetime A.
Where Standard makes sense: rental properties, builder-spec installations, garage and outbuilding roofs, and detached structures where a full Pro premium does not pencil. Where Standard does not make sense: primary residence renovations where the bundle gap to Pro is small money over the roof’s life. At the same sellers on October 9, 2026, Landmark PRO listed about $5 to $18 more per bundle than Landmark (Ring’s End $51.99 against $46.99; Arbor $62.00 against $44.48).
Landmark Pro: the mid-tier and the volume seller
Landmark Pro is our pick for most US homeowners. The weight bump to about 234 to 240 pounds per square (TDS, 03/23) is meaningful, and Landmark PRO is a Lifetime A product in CertainTeed’s warranty, so its 10-year SureStart period also covers tear-off and disposal. The extra mass contributes to:
- Stronger shadow lines. Thicker laminate creates deeper visual definition, the look most homeowners actually want when they upgrade from a 3-tab shingle.
Pro uses the same standard (non-SBS) asphalt as Standard. In the Landmark line, the SBS-modified version is Landmark ClimateFlex. Landmark Solaris is a different thing: the solar-reflective (cool-roof) color version, not an SBS product. If you want cold-weather flexibility, Pro is not the SKU; that requirement points to ClimateFlex (OC’s SBS-modified Duration FLEX is also a Class 4 shingle).
Landmark Premium: higher TG-points, premium price
Landmark Premium is a heavier, larger-profile shingle aimed at a deeper shadow line. The economic case for Premium over Pro is narrow: the extra cost buys visual presence rather than functional performance. The wind and algae terms match Pro in CertainTeed’s 2026 warranty (Lifetime A, 30-year algae). CertainTeed’s Landmark installation instructions say Premium is made to meet UL 2218 Class 4 when installed over a clean deck with no roof-over, which makes it the only Lifetime A, 30-year-algae Class 4 Landmark tier; ask your insurer whether it accepts that documentation.
Where Premium makes sense: high-end residential renovations where the roof is a visible architectural element (steep pitches, prominent street-facing facades, custom homes with slate or wood-shake aesthetic goals). For a true shake look, compare CertainTeed’s designer line in our review of CertainTeed Presidential shingles. Where Premium does not make sense: standard suburban tract roofs where ground-level visual difference from Pro is minimal.
Landmark ClimateFlex: Class 4 impact for hail-belt states
Landmark ClimateFlex is the impact-resistant SKU. CertainTeed describes it as UL 2218 Class 4 with polymer (SBS) modified asphalt, which also improves cold-weather flexibility. Its algae warranty is 25 years, not the 30 on Landmark PRO, and it is a Lifetime B product, so SureStart does not cover tear-off.
The economic case in hail-belt states can be strong, because many insurers there file premium credits for UL 2218 Class 4 roofs. Each carrier sets its own credit percentage and proof rules (often the UL 2218 label or the TDS), so get the figure in writing from your own insurer before paying the upgrade.
To check the math for your home, divide the ClimateFlex upgrade cost on your quote by the annual discount your carrier confirms. On a 30-square roof, the October 9 listings put ClimateFlex ($55.00) about $3 per bundle above the top Landmark PRO listing, roughly $270 in material for 90 bundles; with a hypothetical $150 yearly credit, the material gap pays back in under 2 years. Labor is the same for both tiers on the same scope.
Pricing across the 4 tiers
CertainTeed does not publish retail prices and pricing is regional. Retail listings seen through Google Shopping on October 9, 2026 showed Landmark at $36.97 to $46.99 per bundle, Landmark PRO at $51.99 to $64.75, Landmark Premium at $52.75 to $69.75 and Landmark ClimateFlex at $55.00. We did not survey local bids, so get at least three written, line-item quotes in your market, each pricing 3 bundles per square plus starter and hip and ridge.
Installed, our 2026 Roofing Cost Report puts architectural asphalt at about $5 to $8 per square foot ($500 to $800 per square), or roughly $11,000 to $24,000 for a 22 to 30 square roof, and Class 4 impact shingles such as ClimateFlex at about $8 to $13 per square foot. Tier, tear-off, decking and market move the final number. Our broader breakdown is at /how-much-does-a-new-roof-cost/.
Wind warranty: 110 mph standard, 160 mph upgrade in 2026
CertainTeed’s 2026 Limited Warranty lists a 15-year wind warranty at 110 mph for Landmark products and a 160 mph upgrade when SwiftStart, SwiftStart SA or High-Performance Starter goes on the eaves and rakes, Shadow Ridge, Cedar Crest, Shangle Ridge or Mountain Ridge caps the hips and ridges, and the roof is not a roof-over (the 2025 warranty’s upgrade was 130 mph on the same conditions; in Florida, a 4 in bed of roofing cement along the rakes can replace rake starter). CertainTeed’s 2026 wind sell sheet also gives an Integrity Roof System unlimited wind velocity coverage. The upgrade is not tied to SureStart PLUS registration. GAF Timberline HDZ is 110 mph standard and 130 mph with GAF starter at the eaves and rakes (4 nails), with WindProven adding no maximum when LayerLock shingles go on with 4 nails and 4 qualifying GAF accessories; OC Duration lists 130 mph with its standard 4-nail application and up to 160 mph with OC components and starter on eaves and rakes. Warranty wind numbers are contractual coverage tiers, not lab-measured failure thresholds; confirm the exact rating on your signed warranty document.
For high-wind coastal applications (South Florida HVHZ zones, coastal Texas, parts of North Carolina), the warranty number is only part of the picture: HVHZ zones separately require a Miami-Dade or Florida Product Approval for the specific shingle plus the approved fastening schedule. Landmark’s data sheet lists Florida Product Approval FL5444 and says it meets TDI windstorm requirements; confirm the approval covers the plant that made your bundles.
Impact rating: Class 3 standard, Class 4 on ClimateFlex
CertainTeed’s data sheets and its 2026 roofing selection guide list Landmark and Landmark PRO as UL 2218 Class 3 and Landmark ClimateFlex as Class 4; its 2025 warranty also listed Landmark TL as Class 4, and the Landmark installation instructions say Premium and ClimateFlex reach Class 4 only over a clean deck (no roof-over). The Class 4 rating is the entire value proposition of ClimateFlex. Outside hail-belt and severe-storm zones, where no carrier credit applies, Pro is the better buy.
ClimateFlex technology: the cold-weather story
ClimateFlex is CertainTeed’s SBS-modified asphalt formulation. It is used in Landmark ClimateFlex and NorthGate ClimateFlex, both Class 4 in CertainTeed’s 2025 warranty and 2026 selection guide. The benefits in cold-weather installation:
- Improved flexibility at low temperatures. Standard asphalt stiffens in the cold; SBS-modified asphalt stays more flexible, reducing crack risk during shoulder-season installs.
- Thermal cycling. Freeze-thaw cycles in northern climates stress shingles, and rubberized asphalt is designed to tolerate that movement better.
- Cold-weather sealing. CertainTeed’s installation instructions warn that sealing may be delayed on any Landmark applied in cool weather and that unsealed shingles may need hand sealing; SBS modification helps flexibility, not the seal-down timing.
The product gap in the Landmark lineup: there is no ClimateFlex variant of Landmark Pro. If you want SBS modification, you step into Landmark ClimateFlex, which brings a Class 4 rating you may not need and a shorter 25-year algae term. OC’s SBS-modified Duration FLEX is also Class 4, so it does not fill that gap either.
Warranty breakdown: Lifetime Limited explained
| Coverage period | What is covered | How payouts work |
|---|---|---|
| Years 1 to 10 (SureStart period) | Materials and labor; on Landmark Pro, CertainTeed’s brochure says SureStart also covers tear-off and disposal | Non-prorated |
| Years 11 to lifetime | Material only, prorated | Reduction of 1/600 per month; from year 40 the payout stays at 20% of maximum liability |
| Algae (StreakFighter) | 25 years (Landmark, ClimateFlex) to 30 years (Landmark Pro, Premium), AR versions with CertainTeed AR hip and ridge | 30-year terms prorate after 15 years, 25-year terms after 10; 10 years only without CT AR hip and ridge |
| Wind (standard) | 15 years at 110 mph | Per the CertainTeed wind warranty terms |
| Wind (upgrade) | 160 mph for the Landmark family in 2026 (130 mph in the 2025 warranty) | Requires CertainTeed starter and CertainTeed hip and ridge, no roof-over; Integrity Roof System gets unlimited wind velocity coverage |
| SureStart PLUS extended warranties | Up to 50 years of non-prorated coverage; 4-STAR adds 15 years and 5-STAR 30 years of workmanship coverage | Require CertainTeed system components and a qualifying credentialed contractor |
The SureStart period (first 10 years non-prorated) is the same structural concept as the non-prorated periods in GAF’s and OC’s warranties. After year 10, the 1/600 monthly reduction applies to the shingle cost only: at month 300 (year 25) CertainTeed’s obligation is 300/600 off, or half the shingle cost with no labor, and from year 40 it holds at 20%. A transfer after the SureStart period cuts coverage to 2 years from the transfer date, per the 2026 warranty. This is the category convention, not a CertainTeed outlier.
SureStart vs SureStart PLUS warranty extensions
SureStart is the 10-year non-prorated period built into the Landmark Lifetime Limited Warranty. SureStart PLUS is CertainTeed’s family of extended warranties, offered through CertainTeed-credentialed contractors, that lengthen non-prorated coverage when the roof uses CertainTeed system components. CertainTeed’s credentialing page lists 3-STAR at 50 years, 4-STAR at 50 years with 15 years of workmanship coverage, and 5-STAR at 50 years with 30 years of workmanship coverage, and says contractors with the ShingleMaster PRO or ShingleMaster PREMIER designation can offer 4-STAR or 5-STAR. Check the current tier terms with your contractor, because CertainTeed revises them.
The wind upgrade is separate: CertainTeed’s 2026 sell sheet says the jump from 110 to 160 mph requires CertainTeed starter and CertainTeed hip and ridge and no roof-over. Starter runs along every eave and rake foot and hip and ridge along every ridge foot, so measure those runs on your roof plan and ask for them as line items.
Color options: the Landmark Pro Max Def palette
CertainTeed’s current Landmark Pro brochure lists 16 Max Def colors. Availability varies by region, so confirm stock with your supplier.
| Color family | Landmark Pro Max Def colors listed by CertainTeed |
|---|---|
| Grays and blacks | Cobblestone Gray, Georgetown Gray, Colonial Slate, Pewter, Moire Black |
| Browns and woods | Weathered Wood, Driftwood, Prairie Wood, Heather Blend, Shenandoah, Burnt Sienna, Espresso, Resawn Shake, Red Oak |
| Blues and greens | Coastal Blue, Evergreen |
If cool-roof codes (Title 24 in California) or utility rebates matter to you, standard Landmark colors will not qualify; the Landmark Solaris versions do. CertainTeed’s 2026 selection guide lists Solaris Graphite (CRRC 0668-0155) at an aged solar reflectance of 0.21, thermal emittance of 0.91 and SRI of 20, and Solaris Weathered Wood (CRRC 0668-0119) at SRI 21. Check the listing in the Cool Roof Rating Council directory before signing.
Landmark vs GAF Timberline HDZ
| Spec | CertainTeed Landmark Pro | GAF Timberline HDZ |
|---|---|---|
| Wind warranty (standard) | 110 mph | 110 mph |
| Wind warranty (upgrade) | 160 mph with CT starter and hip and ridge (2026); unlimited in an Integrity Roof System | 130 mph with GAF starter at eaves and rakes; no max with WindProven |
| Impact rating (standard) | Class 3 (Class 4 on Landmark ClimateFlex and TL) | Class 3 (Class 4 on Timberline AS II) |
| Algae warranty | 30 years (StreakFighter) | 25 years (StainGuard Plus) |
| Weight per square | 231 to 240 lbs (Pro TDS 10/23) | Not listed on GAF’s product page |
| Color options | 16 Max Def (Landmark Pro) | 24 plus |
| Listed per bundle, Oct 9, 2026 | $51.99 to $64.75 (Pro) | $34.00 to $51.98 (HDZ) |
Landmark Pro wins on algae warranty (30 versus 25 years) and weight (231 to 240 lb per square). HDZ wins on price in the October 2026 listings and on wind flexibility: GAF’s WindProven needs no registration or extra cost, while CertainTeed’s unlimited wind coverage requires a full Integrity Roof System; on the accessory-based upgrade, Landmark’s 160 mph tops HDZ’s 130 mph. The choice frequently comes down to which contractor network is stronger in your zip code, and whether algae resistance or wind coverage is the higher local concern. Our full HDZ analysis is at /gaf-timberline-hdz-review/.
Landmark vs Owens Corning Duration
| Spec | CertainTeed Landmark Pro | OC TruDefinition Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Wind rating | 110 mph (160 with CT starter and hip and ridge, 2026) | 130 mph with 4 nails; up to 160 mph with OC components |
| Impact rating | Class 3 (Class 4 on ClimateFlex) | Class 3 (Class 4 on FLEX and STORM) |
| Algae warranty | 30 years | 25 years (with approved OC hip and ridge) |
| Nailing technology | Conventional nailing strip | SureNail (woven fabric reinforcement) |
| Color options | 16 Max Def (Landmark Pro) | 28 plus |
| Listed per bundle, Oct 9, 2026 | $51.99 to $64.75 (Pro) | $38.00 to $47.03 (Duration) |
Landmark Pro wins on algae warranty. Duration wins on nailing technology (SureNail is a woven reinforcement that Landmark does not have an equivalent of), on price in the October 2026 listings, and on standard wind rating without an upgrade. Both brands sell SBS-modified Class 4 shingles (Duration FLEX, Landmark ClimateFlex); OC’s Duration STORM reaches Class 4 with a polymeric backing instead. Our full Duration review is at /owens-corning-duration-shingles-review/.
CertainTeed ShingleMaster credentials
ShingleMaster PREMIER is the top of the CertainTeed contractor network, comparable to GAF Master Elite and OC Platinum Preferred. Older CertainTeed literature calls the top tier SELECT ShingleMaster.
Per CertainTeed’s credentialing page, ShingleMaster PRO and ShingleMaster PREMIER contractors can offer SureStart PLUS 4-STAR or 5-STAR coverage, which adds 15 or 30 years of CertainTeed-backed workmanship coverage. If you are paying for Landmark Pro, Premium, or ClimateFlex and want workmanship coverage from the manufacturer, ask which SureStart PLUS tier your contractor can register. For contractor vetting guidance, see /how-to-choose-a-roofing-contractor/.
The CertainTeed contractor credentials, from entry to top tier:
- CertainTeed Credentialed Contractor. Entry-level credential.
- CertainTeed ShingleMaster PRO. Can offer SureStart PLUS 4-STAR or 5-STAR, per CertainTeed.
- CertainTeed ShingleMaster PREMIER. Top tier; can offer 4-STAR or 5-STAR, per CertainTeed.
The Integrity Roof System: components and accessory math
CertainTeed packages Landmark as part of the Integrity Roof System, the company’s branded integrated installation package. The system includes specific CertainTeed components at each layer. CertainTeed’s strongest extended warranties require CertainTeed system components installed by a qualifying credentialed contractor.
- Underlayment. RoofRunner and DiamondDeck are CertainTeed’s synthetics; CertainTeed’s evaluation documents list DiamondDeck at up to 180 days of UV exposure. On slopes from 2:12 to below 4:12, the Landmark instructions require WinterGuard, VYCOR or another ASTM D1970 membrane over the entire deck.
- Ice and water shield. WinterGuard is the standard CertainTeed product. Where ice damming is a known risk, IRC R905.1.2 requires an ice barrier from the eave edge to at least 24 in inside the exterior wall line.
- Starter strip. SwiftStart is CertainTeed’s starter, and CertainTeed starter is one of the conditions for the wind upgrade.
- Hip and ridge. Mountain Ridge, Shadow Ridge or Cedar Crest, depending on the look. CertainTeed AR hip and ridge is required for the 25 and 30-year algae terms, and CertainTeed hip and ridge for the wind upgrade.
- Ventilation. CertainTeed Ridge Vent products integrate with the system. As discussed throughout this review series, attic ventilation is the under-recognized roof-life factor: IRC R806.2 sets 1 sq ft of net free area per 150 sq ft of attic floor, and CertainTeed’s 2026 warranty limits shingles on an inadequately ventilated deck to a 10-year term.
The accessory bundle adds to the cost of a typical roof beyond Landmark shingle material, so ask for it as separate line items. The extended SureStart PLUS warranties require it, and the 160 mph wind upgrade requires at least CertainTeed starter and hip and ridge.
Installation notes: alignment, nailing and sealing
Alignment. Landmark goes on at a 5 5/8 in exposure, so the second and third courses sit at 5 5/8 and 11 1/4 in above the starter per the installation instructions; crooked courses show easily in the shadow lines. Ask whether the crew snaps chalk lines for each course.
Nailing. Landmark’s NailTrak gives a 1 1/2 in wide nailing area. The installation instructions call for 4 nails per full shingle on standard slopes and 6 nails plus four spots of roofing cement above 21:12, using 11 or 12 gauge corrosion-resistant nails with 3/8 in heads that reach 3/4 in into the deck or 1/8 in through it. Ask how the crew sets nail-gun pressure to avoid overdriving.
Cold-weather sealing. Landmark and Landmark Pro behave like other non-SBS asphalt shingles and need warmth to self-seal; hand-sealing is the standard cold-weather mitigation. The SBS-modified Landmark ClimateFlex stays more flexible at lower temperatures.
Landmark ClimateFlex economics: the worked Class 4 case
The Landmark ClimateFlex upgrade decision comes down to three numbers you can get from your own quote and insurer: the ClimateFlex upgrade cost, the annual Class 4 discount your carrier confirms in writing, and how long you plan to stay.
Divide the upgrade cost by the annual discount to get the payback period, as in the worked example in the ClimateFlex section above. Two contract terms change the result: ClimateFlex’s 25-year algae term against PRO’s 30, and its Lifetime B class, under which SureStart does not cover tear-off.
Where Landmark falls short
Standard wind warranty is 110 mph. The 2026 upgrade to 160 mph requires CertainTeed starter and hip and ridge and no roof-over, and unlimited wind coverage requires a full Integrity Roof System, where GAF’s WindProven needs only LayerLock shingles, 4 nails and 4 qualifying accessories.
No SBS-modified option below ClimateFlex. Cold-climate buyers who want rubberized asphalt have to buy the Class 4 Landmark ClimateFlex, whether or not they need the impact rating, and accept its 25-year algae term.
Premium is hard to justify economically. At 4 bundles per square and $52.75 to $69.75 per bundle in the October 9 listings, it carries the same 160 mph and 30-year algae terms as Pro. Its case is the Class 4 rating in the installation instructions; buyers who do not need Class 4 should stop at Pro.
ShingleMaster PRO and PREMIER coverage is uneven by market. Only those two tiers can register SureStart PLUS 4-STAR or 5-STAR (15 or 30 years of workmanship coverage), so search CertainTeed’s contractor locator by zip code before choosing the tier.
Lifetime warranty prorates after year 10. The 1/600 monthly reduction halves the shingle-cost payout by year 25. The “Lifetime” label is depreciation-schedule fine print.
Reading a Landmark quote: what each line item should look like
A Landmark Pro quote for a 25-square roof usually includes the line items below. The shares are editorial orientation only, not survey results or published data, so use them as a checklist and ask the contractor to explain any line that looks out of proportion.
| Line item | Typical share of total | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tear-off and disposal of existing roof | 10 to 15 percent | Higher for multiple existing layers |
| Decking inspection and replacement allowance | 3 to 8 percent | Quoted as allowance with overage billing |
| Underlayment (synthetic) plus WinterGuard | 5 to 8 percent | Required in northern climates per code |
| Landmark Pro shingles | 18 to 28 percent | Higher proportion on smaller roofs |
| Integrity Roof System accessories | 5 to 10 percent | SwiftStart, Mountain Ridge, drip edge, flashing |
| Ridge ventilation upgrades | 2 to 5 percent | Critical for warranty and roof life |
| Labor (install, supervision) | 30 to 40 percent | Largest single bucket |
| Warranty registration and overhead | 3 to 6 percent | Contractor margin and admin |
Two flags. First, if the accessory bundle is bundled into a vague “system” line, you cannot verify extended warranty eligibility. Demand itemization. Second, if a contractor offers Landmark Standard pricing but is using Landmark Pro material, that is good for you, but it might also indicate a contractor who is not careful about specification matching, which affects warranty filings later.
Best for, not for: the decision framework
Best for:
- Humid-climate homeowners (Gulf Coast, southeast, Pacific Northwest) where the 30-year StreakFighter algae warranty on Landmark Pro beats the 25-year GAF HDZ and OC Duration coverage
- Hail-belt residents who can step up to Landmark ClimateFlex for Class 4 plus a possible insurance discount
- Homeowners who want a heavier shingle with deeper shadow lines (Pro or Premium) for visual presence
- Markets with strong CertainTeed ShingleMaster PRO and PREMIER contractor coverage
Not for:
- Buyers prioritizing wind coverage without a full CertainTeed system (GAF HDZ offers the WindProven no-maximum option; OC Duration lists up to 160 mph with OC components)
- Markets where ShingleMaster PRO and PREMIER contractor coverage is thin and CertainTeed’s strongest extended warranties are unreachable

Frequently asked questions
Is CertainTeed Landmark better than GAF Timberline HDZ?
Better is feature-dependent. Landmark Pro has a longer algae warranty (30 years versus 25 for HDZ’s StainGuard Plus) and, in 2026, a 160 mph wind upgrade with CertainTeed starter and hip and ridge against HDZ’s 130 mph. HDZ offers GAF’s WindProven no-maximum wind warranty with no registration, while CertainTeed’s unlimited wind coverage requires a full Integrity Roof System, and HDZ listed for less per bundle in October 2026. The choice frequently comes down to which contractor network is stronger in your zip code, and whether algae resistance or wind coverage is the higher local priority.
How long does CertainTeed Landmark Pro last?
CertainTeed does not publish a service life in years. InterNACHI’s Standard Estimated Life Expectancy Chart for Homes puts architectural asphalt shingles at about 30 years, and heat, ventilation and installation quality move the real figure. The “Lifetime” warranty label refers to a prorated depreciation schedule, not service expectation. See /asphalt-shingle-roof-lifespan/ for full breakdown.
What is the difference between Landmark, Pro, Premium, and ClimateFlex?
Standard Landmark is the entry tier (211 to 225 lbs per square per CertainTeed’s data sheet) with a 25-year algae term. Pro adds mass (231 to 240 lbs) and a 30-year algae term, with the same wind and Class 3 impact specs. Premium is a heavier-look upgrade with a 30-year algae term that CertainTeed’s installation instructions rate UL 2218 Class 4 over a clean deck. ClimateFlex uses SBS-modified asphalt for Class 4 impact resistance and cold-weather flexibility, with a 25-year algae term. Landmark TL is the other Class 4 Landmark product.
Do I need a ShingleMaster PRO or PREMIER contractor?
Only if you want CertainTeed’s SureStart PLUS 4-STAR or 5-STAR warranties, which add 15 or 30 years of manufacturer-backed workmanship coverage; CertainTeed says ShingleMaster PRO and PREMIER contractors can offer them. The standard Lifetime Limited warranty with 10 years of SureStart protection applies with any qualified installer.
Is Landmark ClimateFlex worth the upgrade premium?
In hail-belt states (TX, OK, KS, NE, CO, the Dakotas), it can be. Many insurers there offer premium credits for Class 4 roofs; divide the upgrade cost by the discount your carrier confirms to get the payback period. Outside hail-belt zones, ClimateFlex is over-spec for most homeowners, and its 25-year algae term is shorter than Pro’s 30.
What does StreakFighter actually do?
StreakFighter is the copper-containing granule system that suppresses Gloeocapsa magma algae growth. CertainTeed warrants algae-resistant (AR) versions against algae streaking for up to 30 years on Landmark Pro and Premium and 25 years on standard Landmark and ClimateFlex, provided CertainTeed AR hip and ridge is installed; otherwise the algae term is 10 years. This is among the strongest mainstream algae warranties across GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed. The 30-year term prorates after year 15 and the 25-year term after year 10, per the 2026 warranty.
Can I install Landmark in winter?
You can install Landmark Standard and Pro in winter, but the self-seal strip needs warmth to bond, and shingles installed in cold weather may not seal until temperatures rise. Hand-sealing is the standard cold-weather mitigation. Landmark ClimateFlex with SBS-modified asphalt stays more flexible at lower temperatures and is a better choice for shoulder-season installs in northern climates.
Is the CertainTeed warranty transferable?
Yes, once. Under the 2026 Limited Warranty, a transfer during the 10-year SureStart period keeps SureStart for the new owner but caps the term at 50 years (Lifetime A tiers such as PRO) or 40 years (Lifetime B tiers such as Landmark and ClimateFlex); a transfer after SureStart limits coverage to 2 years from the transfer date. Extended SureStart PLUS warranties have their own transfer terms.
How much does a CertainTeed Landmark roof cost?
Our 2026 Roofing Cost Report puts architectural asphalt at about $5 to $8 per square foot installed ($500 to $800 per square), or roughly $11,000 to $24,000 for a typical 22 to 30 square roof, and Class 4 impact shingles such as ClimateFlex at about $8 to $13 per square foot. Retail listings on October 9, 2026 had Landmark at $36.97 to $46.99 per bundle and Landmark PRO at $51.99 to $64.75 (three bundles per square). Market, tear-off layers and decking move the final price, so get itemized quotes.
Which is the best CertainTeed shingle for most homeowners?
Landmark Pro is the best CertainTeed shingle for most US homeowners: it adds mass (231 to 240 lbs per square) and deeper shadow lines over standard Landmark, carries the 30-year StreakFighter algae warranty, and its SureStart period covers tear-off. Step up to Landmark ClimateFlex only if you are in a hail-belt state and want Class 4 impact plus a possible insurance discount. Landmark Premium (Class 4 over a clean deck per the installation instructions, 30-year algae) is the alternative to ClimateFlex when the longer algae term matters.
