Piling 20 inches of insulation into an attic can block the soffit vents at the eaves, and a starved attic traps moisture that rots sheathing and grows mold. Before adding depth, install baffles (also called rafter vents or insulation stops) in each rafter bay at the eave so air can still travel from the soffit up to the ridge vent.
