An RV rain gutter is the narrow aluminum or PVC drip rail that runs along a camper’s roof edge or over a door or window, plus the corner spouts that throw roof water clear of the sidewall. Most fixes cost under $25: a 4-pack of Thetford 94170 replacement spouts listed at $7.99 at Panther RV Products and a 4-pack of Camco 42452 extensions at $14.49 at RV Upgrade Store in October 2026. A full rail replacement runs $28 to $110 per length as listed, before sealant.
Three things decide which part fits: the width of your existing rail (spouts are sold for 1-1/16, 1-1/8 and 1-3/8 inch rails), whether the rail has a vinyl screw-cover insert, and whether the rail also holds an awning or slide-out topper. Every figure on this page comes from maker spec pages (AP Products, JR Products, Trim-Lok, Dicor, Carefree of Colorado) and dated retailer listings. No product here was tested by The Roofing Brief.
Key numbers at a glance
These are the figures RV owners ask for most: rail sizes, spout projection, adhesive cure time, sealant cure time and how much water an RV roof actually sheds. Each row names its source, and prices are October 2026 listings that can change.

What is an RV rain gutter, and which part do you have?
“RV rain gutter” covers five different parts, and they are not interchangeable. A screw-on aluminum gutter rail, typically 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 in tall, runs the full roof edge; an adhesive PVC drip rail sits over single doors and windows; spouts snap into rail ends; extensions clip onto spouts; and a combo rail doubles as an awning track.

| Part | What it does | Typical example | How it attaches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insert gutter rail | Runs along the roof-to-wall seam, catches runoff and carries it to the corners | AP Products 021-56201-8, 1-1/2 x 7/8 in, 8 ft | Screws through the rail, sealing tape behind, vinyl insert over the screw heads |
| Gutter/awning combo rail | Gutter channel plus an awning track for a patio awning or slide topper | AP Products 021-56301-8; RecPro RP-TRM-GTR-AWN (92 in) | Screws and sealing tape |
| Adhesive drip rail (J-rail) | Short J-shaped lip above a door, window or windshield | Trim-Lok Drip Rail (DRW white, DRB black); RecPro RPS-22 | 3M acrylic foam tape, no drilling |
| Gutter spout | Plugs into the rail end and directs the stream off the corner | JR Products 389PW-A; Thetford 94170 | Slides into or over the rail end; some use the rail’s end screw |
| Spout extension | Adds reach to a short factory spout | Camco 42123 (2 in); Camco 42452 (3 in) | Clips or slides on, no tools |
Check the rail profile before ordering. Measure the rail’s outside width across the open channel with a tape or caliper (1-1/16, 1-1/8 and 1-3/8 in are the spout sizes sold), note whether a 1 in vinyl strip covers the screws, and photograph the corner where the spout sits. Those three facts match you to the rows in the next two tables.
RV rain gutter rail and trim sizes compared
RV rain gutter rails come in two families: rigid aluminum extrusions that screw on (1-1/2 to 1-3/4 inches tall) and flexible PVC drip rails that stick on with tape (1/2 to 29/32 inch tall). No listing reviewed for this page publishes a flow rating, so size choice comes down to matching your existing profile.

Two listing quirks are worth checking before checkout. Some resellers describe AP Products 021-56201-8 as a five-pack of 8 ft rails while Panther lists it as a single 8 ft rail, and AP Products itself says the item “cannot be purchased online,” so confirm the count with the seller. Panther also marks 8 ft rails as oversized freight and the 16 ft rail as will-call pickup in Washougal, WA, which often makes a local RV dealer cheaper for long runs.
RV rain gutter spouts and extensions: fit, reach and price
Spouts must match rail width first and reach second. JR Products sells its 389 original spouts for 1-1/8 inch rails (1-3/8 inch reach) and its 655 extended spouts for rails up to 1-1/16 inch. Thetford 94170 fits 1-3/8 inch rails. A spout that is too narrow will not seat, and one too wide leaks at the joint.
| Spout or extension | Fits rail width | Reach or length | Pack | Price, Oct 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JR Products 389PW-A / 389BK-A (original replacement) | 1-1/8 in | Extends 1-3/8 in | 2 sets | Not listed by maker | JR Products |
| JR Products 655-PW-A / 655-BK-A (rigid extended) | Up to 1-1/16 in | Extended | 1 set | Not listed by maker | JR Products |
| JR Products 655-FLEX-PW-A (flexible extended) | Up to 1-1/16 in | Extends 3-1/2 in | 1 set | Not listed by maker | JR Products |
| Thetford 94170 medium spout, Polar White | 1-3/8 in | 3 in | 4 per pack (Panther) or 2 (Hanna) | $7.99 (Panther); $11.99 (Hanna) | Panther; Hanna |
| Thetford 94172 extended spout, white | Not stated by Panther | 3-3/4 in | 4 per pack | $6.95 | Panther |
| RecPro Long RV Gutter Spouts, 655RL | Not stated | 3-1/2 in | 2 (1 left, 1 right) or 4 | From $10.95 | RecPro |
| Camco 42134 spouts with built-in extensions | 1-1/16 in inside diameter | 2 in | 4 | Varies by seller | Farm and Home Supply |
| Camco 42123 clip-on extension | Clips over existing short spouts | Adds 2 in | 4 | $9.80 (list $11.99) | RV Upgrade Store |
| Camco 42452 slide-on spouts with extensions, black | Factory gutters or bare roof-edge lips | Adds 3 in | 4 (2 left, 2 right) | $14.49 (list $17.39) | RV Upgrade Store |
Retail listings disagree on some Thetford details: Hanna Trailer Supply sells 94170 as a 2-pack and calls 94172 “flexible,” while Panther RV Products lists both as 4-packs and calls 94172 “rigid.” Read the package label for count and stiffness. RV Upgrade Store also notes that the Camco 42123 clip-on needs an existing short spout stub to grip, so a bare drip rail needs a full spout such as the 42452 instead.
How much water does an RV roof send to each spout?
An RV roof sheds about 0.62 gallons per square foot for every inch of rain, using the USGS figure of 27,154 gallons per inch on one acre. A 32 x 8 ft roof therefore sends about 160 gallons to its gutters per inch of rain, or about 2 gallons per minute to each of four corner spouts in a 3 inch per hour downpour.
| Roof footprint (length x 8 ft) | Area | Gallons per inch of rain | Total flow at 1 in/hr | Total flow at 3 in/hr | Per spout at 3 in/hr (4 spouts) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 ft (small trailer) | 128 sq ft | 79.8 gal | 1.33 gpm | 3.99 gpm | 1.0 gpm |
| 24 ft | 192 sq ft | 119.7 gal | 1.99 gpm | 5.98 gpm | 1.5 gpm |
| 32 ft | 256 sq ft | 159.6 gal | 2.66 gpm | 7.98 gpm | 2.0 gpm |
| 40 ft (large fifth wheel or Class A) | 320 sq ft | 199.5 gal | 3.32 gpm | 9.97 gpm | 2.5 gpm |
Method: area in square feet x 0.6234 gallons per inch (27,154 / 43,560), then divided by 60 for gallons per minute at a given inches-per-hour rate. These are Roofing Brief estimates for a flat 8 ft wide roof with even drainage to four corners. A rig parked nose-high sends most of the flow to the two rear spouts, which doubles the per-spout figure to about 4 gallons per minute on a 32 ft roof in that storm.
The arithmetic explains why the fix is usually reach, not capacity. Two gallons per minute is a thin stream that a 1-1/2 inch rail channel can carry; the black streaks come from where that stream lands. Leveling the coach side to side, then front to back with a slight drop toward the spouts you want working, spreads the flow and keeps any one corner from overflowing.
How RV rain gutters attach: screws, tape and sealant
Aluminum gutter rails attach with screws through the rail into the wall framing, with sealing tape behind the rail and lap sealant along the roof edge. PVC drip rails attach with 3M acrylic foam tape and no fasteners. Carefree of Colorado’s SOKIII manual specifies #10 x 3/4 in screws for its awning rail, sealed behind with silicone or putty tape.
| Method | Used on | Prep | Cure or set time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screws through rail + butyl putty tape behind | AP Products and RecPro aluminum rails | Remove old tape and sealant; clean wall; tape the full rail back | None for butyl; seal screw heads and roof edge after | Panther listing for AP 021-56201-16 (“attach with screws, require sealing tape”); Carefree SOKIII manual |
| Non-sag lap sealant at the roof edge | Termination rails and roof edges on EPDM, TPO and PVC roofs | Clean off dirt, loose paint, oil; dry surface | Waterproof 4 hr; 100% in 30 days at 50 to 70°F | Dicor 551 series |
| 3M acrylic foam tape | Trim-Lok and RecPro PVC drip rails | Wipe with 1 part water to 1 part alcohol; peel liner as you go | 72 hours to full adhesion | Trim-Lok; RecPro |
| Clip-on or slide-on | Spouts and extensions | Clean the rail end | None | Camco 42123 and 42452 listings |
Dicor states its non-sag lap sealant is compatible with EPDM, TPO and PVC membranes and adheres to aluminum, vinyl, wood, galvanized metal and fiberglass, which covers the rail, the insert and the roof edge in one product. Dicor’s non-sag line comes in six colors in 10.3 oz tubes (551LSB black, 551LSD dove, 551LSG grey, 551LST tan, 551LSV ivory, 551LSW white). Camping World listed 551LSW at $10.50 on sale (regular $15.99) in October 2026.
Match the roof first. Our RV roof sealant guide by membrane covers which lap sealant and tape work on EPDM, TPO, fiberglass and aluminum roofs. That guide also explains why household silicone is avoided at an RV roof edge: later beads of Dicor 501 or 551 lap sealant do not bond over it.
How to replace RV gutter spouts
Replacing a cracked RV gutter spout takes a few minutes per corner and a Phillips screwdriver. The usual sequence is to pull the old spout, match the rail width, slide the new spout in, and reset the end screw if your rail has one. Buy left and right spouts, since packs such as Camco 42452 and RecPro 655RL ship as matched pairs.
- Measure the rail. Measure the outside width of the gutter rail at the corner. Order 1-1/16 in spouts (JR 655 series, Camco 42134) for narrow rails, 1-1/8 in (JR 389) for mid-width rails, or 1-3/8 in (Thetford 94170) for wide rails.
- Remove the old spout. Back out the screw at the very end of the rail if there is one, then wiggle the old spout out. Brittle spouts can break apart; pick every piece out of the channel so nothing dams the flow.
- Clean the joint. Scrape old sealant from the last 2 in of the rail end and wipe it with isopropyl alcohol so a fresh bead, if you use one, can bond.
- Seat the new spout. Slide the spout into or over the rail end until it bottoms out, with the outlet angled down and away from the wall. Left and right spouts are not interchangeable, which is why the RecPro 655RL 2-pack ships 1 left and 1 right.
- Reset the screw and seal. Reinstall the end screw through the rail and spout. A small dab of Dicor 551 non-sag lap sealant on the screw head keeps water out of the hole.
- Test with a hose. Run water along the roof edge for 1 minute and confirm the stream leaves the spout tip and lands at least 2 to 3 in away from the sidewall.
How to install or replace an RV rain gutter rail
Replacing an aluminum RV rain gutter rail means removing the vinyl insert, backing out the screws, cleaning off old butyl tape, then refastening a new rail on fresh tape. A 16 ft rail such as AP Products 021-56201-16 is a two-person job, because one person cannot hold both ends of the extrusion straight while fastening.

- Buy the matching profile. Measure height and depth of the old rail; AP Products 021-56201 is 1-1/2 x 7/8 in and RecPro RP-TRM-GTR is 1-3/4 in tall x 3/4 in wide. Add a 1 in vinyl insert such as RecPro X-101 ($14.95 as listed) and butyl tape such as Heng’s 5131, 3/4 in x 30 ft ($5.99 at Panther).
- Pull the insert and screws. Lift one end of the old vinyl insert with a flat screwdriver, peel it out of the channel, then remove every screw. Keep the old screws in order if you plan to reuse the holes; a stripped hole takes the next gauge up, such as #10 in place of #8.
- Clean the wall. Scrape old butyl tape with a plastic scraper, then wipe the 1 to 2 in band with isopropyl alcohol or the cleaner your siding maker specifies, and let it dry.
- Tape the rail back. Run 3/4 in butyl tape along the full back of the new rail without stretching it, butting tape ends tightly where two rolls meet.
- Set the slope and fasten. Position the rail along the roof-to-wall line and keep it straight and parallel to the roof, as Carefree’s SOKIII manual describes for its awning rail; the coach’s parking pitch moves the water to the spouts. Fasten with #10 x 3/4 in screws into the existing framing holes or new pilot holes into structure.
- Trim the squeeze-out and seal the edge. Cut excess butyl flush with a plastic scraper. Run Dicor 551 non-sag lap sealant along the top joint where the roof edge meets the rail.
- Install the insert and spouts. Press the 1 in vinyl insert into the channel from one end, then seat the corner spouts and test with a hose. Keep the coach dry for at least 4 hours, Dicor’s waterproof time at 50 to 70°F.
How to add an adhesive RV rain gutter over a door or window
A peel-and-stick RV rain gutter over a door or window takes about 15 minutes and needs no drilling. Trim-Lok specifies a 1 to 1 water and alcohol wipe, peeling the liner progressively, and 72 hours before the bond is complete. As a Roofing Brief rule of thumb (not a maker spec), cut the strip 2 to 4 inches longer than the frame so water drops past the corners.
- Measure. Measure the door or window frame width and add 1 to 2 in on each side so the ends overhang the corners.
- Clean. Wipe the band where the tape will sit with 1 part water to 1 part isopropyl alcohol, per Trim-Lok, and let it dry fully.
- Warm the work. Install in mild weather; Trim-Lok recommends application at ambient temperature and rates the finished part for -20°F to 158°F.
- Set a slight angle. Mark a line about 1 in above the frame with painter’s tape, dropping about 1/4 in from center to each end so water runs off both ends. These offsets are a Roofing Brief rule of thumb, not a maker instruction.
- Stick progressively. Peel 6 to 12 in of liner, press the J-lip facing out and up, then peel and press as you go. If the line drifts, peel it back and realign, which Trim-Lok’s FAQ allows.
- Roll and wait. Press the full length firmly with a roller or thumb, then avoid washing or driving in rain for 72 hours.
Slide-out toppers, fifth wheels and travel trailers
On fifth wheels and travel trailers with slide-outs, the gutter often shares space with a slide-out topper’s awning rail. Carefree of Colorado’s SOKIII manual places that rail along the roofline or 1 to 2 in above the room flange, level and parallel with the room, so a combo gutter and awning rail can serve both jobs.
| Rig setup | What the gutter must do | Part that fits the job | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel trailer, no slide topper | Carry roof water to 4 corner spouts | Insert gutter rail (AP 021-56201) + spouts sized to the rail | AP Products; JR Products |
| Fifth wheel or trailer with slide toppers | Gutter plus a track for the topper fabric’s polyrod | Gutter/awning combo rail (AP 021-56301-8, RecPro RP-TRM-GTR-AWN) | Panther; RecPro |
| Slide topper up to 155 in order length | Topper brackets mount below the rail | 2 deflector brackets (Carefree SOKIII) | Carefree SOKIII manual |
| Slide topper 156 to 191 in order length | Same | 3 brackets, third centered on the room | Carefree SOKIII manual |
| Class C or van with no factory gutter | Stop drips at the cab door and windows | Adhesive drip rail (Trim-Lok, RecPro RPS-22) | Trim-Lok; RecPro |
Keep spouts outside a slide-out’s footprint so the stream does not land on the slide roof or topper fabric. Where the factory spout sits directly over a slide, a 3 to 3-3/4 in extended spout such as Thetford 94172 or Camco 42452 can move the drop point past the slide wall when the room is retracted.
How far can RV gutter spouts stick out on the road?
Spout extensions add width, and width is regulated. California sets a 102 inch maximum vehicle width (Vehicle Code 35100) but lets a recreational vehicle exceed it with appurtenances that stay within 6 inches of either sidewall (35103), according to Caltrans’ vehicle width summary.
| Rule (California) | Limit | What it means for gutters |
|---|---|---|
| CVC 35100(a), general width | 102 in total outside width | A 102 in body leaves no room for parts that are not excluded |
| CVC 35103, RV appurtenances | Up to 6 in beyond either sidewall | Covers awnings, grab handles, lights, cameras, vents |
| CHP Commercial Enforcement Manual HPM 82.6, safety devices | Up to 3 in beyond either side, 108 in maximum | Lists rain gutters among excluded devices |
A 3-3/4 in spout sits within both the 6 in RV appurtenance allowance and the 3 in device allowance only if the spout’s projection from the sidewall, not its length, stays under those figures. Measure from the wall to the spout tip. Other states set their own rules, so check your state’s DOT width page before a long trip.
RV rain gutter cost: worked parts budgets
Most RV rain gutter repairs are parts-only jobs under $60. Replacing four spouts costs about $8 to $14, adding extensions $10 to $15, and re-railing a 16 ft side about $106 in parts. The table adds up four common jobs from October 2026 listings, before shipping and tax.
| Job | Parts (as listed, Oct 2026) | Arithmetic | Parts total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replace 4 cracked spouts | Thetford 94170, 4-pack, Panther | 1 x $7.99 | $7.99 (+$5.95 flat-rate shipping at Panther) |
| Add reach to 4 factory spouts | Camco 42452, 4-pack, RV Upgrade Store | 1 x $14.49 | $14.49 |
| Drip rail over 1 door and 1 window (about 10 ft) | RecPro RPS-22 adhesive trim, 5 ft | 2 x $20.95 | $41.90 |
| Re-rail one 16 ft side | AP 021-56201-16 ($74.46) + RecPro 1 in vinyl insert ($14.95) + Heng’s 5131 butyl ($5.99) + Dicor 551LSW ($10.50) | $74.46 + $14.95 + $5.99 + $10.50 | $105.90 |
Labor is the variable an RV dealer adds. Camping World offers in-store installation on parts it sells, booked at checkout, so ask the service desk for a flat quote for 4 spouts or a 16 ft rail run and whether it includes the lap sealant and new butyl tape.
Which RV rain gutter fix should you pick?
Pick by symptom; every fix below costs between $9.80 and about $106 in parts. Black streaks below the corners point to short spouts, drips at a door or window point to a missing drip rail, and water inside the wall near the roof line points to a failed rail seal, which is a leak repair rather than a gutter upgrade.
| If you see this | Do this | Example part |
|---|---|---|
| Black streaks below the 4 corners, factory spouts intact | Add clip-on extensions | Camco 42123 (+2 in), $9.80 per 4 |
| Streaks, and spouts are cracked or missing | Replace spouts with longer ones sized to the rail width | JR 655-FLEX (3-1/2 in, 1-1/16 in rails) or Thetford 94170 (3 in, 1-3/8 in rails) |
| Bare roof-edge lip, no spout stubs | Use slide-on spouts with extensions, not clip-ons | Camco 42452 (+3 in) |
| Rain drips onto you at the entry door | Add a peel-and-stick drip rail 1 to 2 in wider than the door each side | Trim-Lok Drip Rail or RecPro RPS-22 |
| Vinyl insert cracked or shrinking, rail sound | Replace only the insert | RecPro X-101 1 in vinyl insert |
| Rail loose, screws spinning, stains inside the wall | Treat as a roof-edge leak: re-rail on new butyl and reseal | AP 021-56201 + butyl + Dicor 551 |
| Adding a slide topper where only a gutter rail exists | Swap that run to a gutter/awning combo rail | AP 021-56301-8 or RecPro RP-TRM-GTR-AWN |
| Spouts tear your RV cover in storage | Fit spout guards before covering | Camco RV Cover Gutter Spout Guard Kit, $29.32 at Camping World |
Gutters move water; they do not fix a failing roof edge, and a 1-1/2 in rail cannot stop a leak at the membrane termination. If stains appear inside, start with our RV roof repair guide by leak source. For the cleaning and inspection routine that reduces streaks at the roof itself, use our RV roof maintenance schedule. House-style small gutters for sheds, tiny homes and mobile homes are compared in our mini gutters guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the gutter on an RV called?
The gutter on an RV is usually called a drip rail, gutter rail or rain gutter rail. AP Products sells it as an Insert Gutter Rail (021-56201, 1-1/2 x 7/8 in), and Trim-Lok sells a stick-on version as Drip Rail. The short plastic pieces at the corners are gutter spouts, and the add-ons that lengthen them are spout extensions.
Can I install my own RV rain gutters?
Yes. Spouts and extensions install by hand in a few minutes, and adhesive drip rail needs only an alcohol wipe and 72 hours to bond, per Trim-Lok. Replacing an aluminum gutter rail is also DIY work, but it needs butyl tape, #10 x 3/4 in screws, Dicor non-sag lap sealant and a second person for 16 ft lengths.
Where can I find rain gutter extensions for my RV?
RV parts retailers stock them. In October 2026, RV Upgrade Store listed Camco 42123 clip-on extensions (adds 2 in) at $9.80 per 4 and Camco 42452 slide-on spouts (adds 3 in) at $14.49, RecPro sold 3-1/2 in long spouts from $10.95, and Panther RV Products listed Thetford 94172 extended spouts at $6.95 per 4.
How do I install RV gutter downspouts correctly?
Match the spout to the rail width first: 1-1/16 in, 1-1/8 in or 1-3/8 in. Remove the end screw, pull the old spout, clean the rail end, slide the new left or right spout in until it bottoms out with the outlet angled away from the wall, reset the screw, seal its head with lap sealant, then test with a hose.
How many hangers per 10 ft of gutter does an RV need?
None. RV gutter rails do not hang on brackets the way house gutters do. They screw straight through the rail into the wall framing over a strip of butyl tape, and a vinyl insert covers the screw heads. Carefree of Colorado specifies #10 x 3/4 in screws for its awning rail, and AP Products rails are sold in 8 ft and 16 ft lengths.
Why does my RV get black streaks under the gutters?
Black streaks form where roof runoff carrying dirt and oxidized roof residue runs down the sidewall instead of dropping clear. Short or cracked corner spouts are the usual cause, which is why extensions such as Camco 42123 (2 in) and 42452 (3 in) target streaks. Washing the roof on a schedule reduces what the water carries.
Do RV gutter spout extensions make an RV too wide?
Usually not, if they stay short. In California, Vehicle Code 35103 lets a recreational vehicle carry appurtenances up to 6 in beyond either sidewall over the 102 in width limit, and the CHP enforcement manual lists rain gutters among devices allowed up to 3 in beyond the side. Measure projection from the wall and check your own state's rules.
How long does adhesive RV rain gutter trim take to stick?
Plan on 72 hours. Trim-Lok says its Drip Rail adhesion process is complete after 72 hours, and RecPro recommends the same wait for its RPS-22 adhesive gutter trim. Clean with a 1 to 1 water and alcohol mix first, install at ambient temperature, and avoid washing or driving in rain until the bond is complete.
