GAF Solar Shingles Cost (2026): Timberline Solar ES 2 Review, Specs and Warranty

GAF solar shingles cost: CPSC-recorded $40k to $100k system prices, a per-watt quote decoder, ES 2 specs, warranty fine print, and no 25D credit in 2026.

GAF Solar Shingles Cost (2026): Timberline Solar ES 2 Review, Specs and Warranty

By The Roofing Brief Team | Last reviewed: October 2026

GAF solar shingles cost is not published by GAF, so the best hard number is the federal record: the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2023 recall notice says first-generation Timberline Solar systems sold for $40,000 to $100,000. GAF says a Timberline Solar roof is comparable in price to a new roof plus rack-mounted panels, which for a typical 2,500 square foot roof with 7 kW works out to roughly $30,700 to $38,200 at 2026 benchmark prices (a Roofing Brief estimate, arithmetic below). No federal 25D credit applies to a 2026 install.

This review covers the current product (Timberline Solar ES 2, 57 watts per shingle) from GAF Energy’s own data sheet and warranty documents, decodes what a GAF solar quote implies per watt, compares it with the Tesla Solar Roof and a rack-mounted panel on cost, output and warranty, and sets out what changed at GAF Energy in 2025.

Key numbers at a glance

These are the figures most buyers want before asking a GAF certified roofer for a solar quote. Each row names its source. Prices are pre-incentive and vary by roof size, pitch, shading, market and installer.

How much do GAF solar shingles cost in 2026?

GAF solar shingles cost is quoted per project, not per shingle, and GAF does not publish a list price. The only figure on the public record from GAF itself is the CPSC filing: about 2,100 first-generation systems sold for $40,000 to $100,000 each. GAF’s own cost FAQ positions a Timberline Solar roof as comparable to a new roof plus rack-mounted panels, so that sum is the fairest benchmark for a 2026 quote.

The CPSC range reflects the 46 W first-generation shingle sold from November 2021 through April 2023, before the 57 W ES 2 launched on February 19, 2025. Contractor blogs that rank for this search quote everything from $3.80 to $4.50 per watt to $35,000 to $40,000 per roof, but none of them cite a source, and several still subtract a 26 or 30 percent federal credit that no longer exists for a 2026 install.

What GAF’s “comparable to roof plus panels” claim works out to

Taking GAF at its word, a fair Timberline Solar quote should land near the cost of an architectural shingle roof plus a rack-mounted array of the same size. The table below builds that parity benchmark from two named inputs: The Roofing Brief’s 2026 roofing cost report baseline of $5 to $8 per square foot installed for architectural asphalt, and EnergySage’s $2.60 per watt national average for panels.

Home scenario Energy shingles needed (57 W) Solar area (squares) New asphalt roof Rack-mounted panels at $2.60/W Parity benchmark (roof plus panels)
18 squares (1,800 sq ft of roof), 5 kW 88 2.9 $9,000 to $14,400 $13,000 $22,000 to $27,400
25 squares (2,500 sq ft of roof), 7 kW 123 4.1 $12,500 to $20,000 $18,200 $30,700 to $38,200
32 squares (3,200 sq ft of roof), 10 kW 176 5.9 $16,000 to $25,600 $26,000 $42,000 to $51,600

Source note: Roofing Brief estimate. Shingle count = system watts divided by 57 W, rounded up. Solar area = kW divided by GAF’s 1.7 kW per square. Roof = squares x 100 x $5 to $8. Panels = watts x $2.60 (EnergySage, October 2026). EnergySage notes installers often charge less per watt for larger systems, so small arrays may cost more per watt than this. Tear-off, decking repair and electrical upgrades are not included.

How to decode a GAF solar quote, step by step

A Timberline Solar bid bundles the roof and the solar into one number, which hides what you pay for the solar alone. Backing the roof out of the quote gives an implied cost per watt that you can set against a rack-mounted panel bid. Five steps do it, using figures that appear on any proper proposal.

  1. Get the system size in kW DC from the proposal. Check it against the shingle count: count x 57 W should match the stated size for ES 2.
  2. Get the total roof area in squares (one square = 100 sq ft), including the area under the energy shingles, since those shingles are the roof covering there.
  3. Price the same roof without solar: squares x 100 x $5 to $8 per sq ft, or better, a real architectural shingle quote from the same contractor.
  4. Subtract the roof from the total to get the solar premium, then divide by the system watts.
  5. Compare the result with a rack-mounted bid for the same kW, or with EnergySage’s $2.60 per watt national average (October 2026).

Worked example (Roofing Brief arithmetic, hypothetical quote): a $55,000 bid for a 25 square roof with 7 kW of ES 2. The roof portion is $12,500 to $20,000, leaving $35,000 to $42,500 for solar, which is $5.00 to $6.07 per watt. That is roughly double the $2.60 panel average, so a bid like this sits well above GAF’s own parity claim and is worth pushing back on or rebidding.

What is Timberline Solar ES 2? Specs from GAF Energy’s data sheet

Timberline Solar ES 2 is GAF Energy’s second-generation energy shingle: a 57 W monocrystalline PERC module built into a shingle form that roofers nail to the deck beside standard Timberline asphalt shingles. GAF calls it the world’s first nailable solar shingle. The model codes are TLS-2 and TLS-2AJM, and the specs below come from GAF Energy data sheet SM512 (dated 2026) unless noted.

Spec Timberline Solar ES 2 Source
Rated power (Pmax) 57 W, plus or minus 5% SM512
Cell type Monocrystalline PERC SM512
Shingle size 68 3/4 x 16 7/8 x 1 in (1,746 x 428 x 26 mm) SM512
Active exposure 65 x 7.56 in (1,651 x 192 mm) SM512
Weight 10.1 lb per shingle; installed system 3.36 lb per sq ft SM512
Coverage About 30 energy shingles per square (1.7 kW per square) SM512
Minimum roof pitch 2:12 SM512
Minimum sheathing 7/16 in OSB or 15/32 in plywood SM512
Temperature coefficient (Pmax) Minus 0.35% per degree C SM512
BIPV system certification UL 7103 SM512
Module certification UL 61730-1 and UL 61730-2 SM512
Fire UL 790 Class A (system rating requires following the installation manual) SM512
Wind classification ASTM D3161 Class F SM512
Impact UL 2218 Class 4, only for packages bearing the Intertek-ETL Class 4 listing statement SM512
Rapid shutdown NEC 690.12 via UL 3741 PV hazard control SM512
Code approvals listed Florida Product Approval FL41599 (including HVHZ), Miami-Dade NOA 25-0204.03, Los Angeles County approval, Texas Department of Insurance SM512

GAF does not print a module efficiency percentage on SM512. Dividing 57 W by the 0.317 square meter active exposure gives about 180 W per square meter, or roughly 18 percent efficiency on the exposed solar area at standard test conditions (Roofing Brief calculation).

The hail rating comes with a caveat printed on the data sheet itself: GAF makes no warranty about hail performance, and hail damage, including leaks and reduced output, is not covered under the limited warranties.

How Timberline Solar installs with Timberline HDZ

Timberline Solar installs as part of a full reroof, not on top of an existing roof. The roofer tears off, then nails the ES 2 energy shingles directly to the deck in the solar zone and fills the rest of the roof with standard Timberline shingles such as Timberline HDZ. GAF says ES 2 is compatible with every Timberline asphalt shingle and uses the same crew and tools.

The job sequence below follows GAF’s published homeowner guide. Electrical work is not done by the roofer alone: GAF says the roofer works with a local electrician affiliated with GAF Energy, and GAF Energy Services offers design, permitting and electrical support to installers.

  1. Design. GAF Energy and the roofer measure and photograph the roof to place the energy shingles on the best-producing planes.
  2. Permitting. GAF Energy handles permits with the local GAF certified roofer, then the install is scheduled.
  3. Delivery. Shingles, GAF’s waterproof layering system, flashing and power electronics arrive together.
  4. Tear-off and install. The roofer removes the old roof and installs the new roof and solar together, with perimeter guards at the array edges.
  5. Electrical tie-in. An electrician affiliated with GAF Energy connects the system and may need access to the attic and main service panel.
  6. Inspections and Permission to Operate. After local sign-off, the utility grants Permission to Operate and the system is switched on.

The non-solar Timberline HDZ shingles on the same roof keep their own warranty terms. HDZ carries a 110 mph standard wind rating, or 130 mph with GAF starter strips; our GAF Timberline HDZ review covers that shingle in detail.

GAF Timberline Solar warranty: what the documents actually cover

Every ES 2 shingle carries the Timberline Solar ES Shingle and Accessory Limited Warranty (GAF document SM515). It covers leak-causing manufacturing defects for 25 years, power output for 25 years, and wind for 15 years, but the full-reimbursement periods are much shorter: 10 years for leaks and just one year for wind and power, after which payouts are prorated.

Coverage Term Non-prorated period Key condition Source
Manufacturing defects that cause leaks 25 years 10 years No tear-off or disposal costs; prorated over 300 months after year 10 SM515
Solar power nameplate capacity 25 years 1 year At least 98% of rated output in year 1, then no more than 0.55% decline a year, 84.8% at year 25; remedy capped at $200 per shingle SM515
Wind (blow-off) 15 years 1 year Up to 130 mph (209 km/h); prorated over 180 months after year 1 SM515
Hail Not covered Not applicable Listed under acts of nature exclusions SM515; SM512
Inverter and other electrical components Not covered by SM515 Not applicable Covered only by a paid Solar Plus or Solar Max addendum SM515; SM523
Solar Plus addendum 10 years See addendum Energy generation (kWh), electronics and inverter, electrical workmanship SM523
Solar Max addendum 25 years See addendum Same coverages for 25 years; service fee up to $300 per power issue SM523; SM514

Three details matter for buyers. First, the SM515 shingle warranty transfers only once, and the second owner must notify GAF in writing within one year of the sale. Second, Solar Plus and Solar Max are sold only with a GAF System Plus, Silver Pledge or Golden Pledge enhanced warranty and require a GAF Energy Solar Certified contractor. Third, electrical workmanship coverage under Solar Max applies only if the installer bought electrical installation services from GAF Energy, and inverters and rooftop electronics must be registered within 90 days of Permission to Operate.

The roofing side can carry long coverage: GAF’s comparison chart (SM523) lists 50 years of non-prorated manufacturing defect coverage on Timberline Lifetime shingles under any of the three enhanced warranties, and workmanship coverage of 10 years (Silver Pledge) or 25 years (Golden Pledge).

GAF Timberline Solar vs Tesla Solar Roof vs rack-mounted panels

Rack-mounted panels win on cost per watt and power density, and GAF Timberline Solar wins on install simplicity for a roof that needs replacing anyway. The Tesla Solar Roof is a full glass-and-steel tile roof with longer non-prorated product and weatherization terms but higher typical quotes. The table uses each maker’s own warranty documents and one current panel data sheet as the panel reference.

Metric GAF Timberline Solar ES 2 Tesla Solar Roof Rack-mounted panel (Qcells Q.TRON BLK M-G2+ 430 W)
Form Nailable energy shingle beside asphalt shingles Glass solar tiles plus steel roofing tiles Framed module on racking over the existing roof
Power density About 17 W per sq ft of solar area (1.7 kW per square) Varies with active tile share; see Tesla proposal About 20.5 W per sq ft of module area (430 W on 21.0 sq ft)
Efficiency About 18% of active exposure (Roofing Brief calculation; not published by GAF) Not stated in the warranty document 22.0% for the 430 W class; up to 22.5% in the series
Product or leak warranty 25 years, 10 non-prorated, leak-causing defects only 25 years design and materials, plus 25-year weatherization warranty 25-year product warranty
Power output warranty 98% year 1, 0.55% a year, 84.8% at year 25 95% at year 5, then no more than 0.5% a year for 20 years (85% at year 25) 98.5% year 1, 0.33% a year, 90.58% at year 25

The Tesla 85 percent year-25 figure is our arithmetic from Tesla’s stated terms.

Density decides fit on small or shaded roofs. At 17 W per square foot, a 7 kW Timberline Solar array needs about 412 square feet of good roof; the same 7 kW from seventeen 430 W panels takes about 357 square feet of module area. For full Tesla pricing by home size, see our Tesla Solar Roof cost guide, and for the category-wide comparison see solar shingles vs panels.

The hidden cost on the panel side: detach and reset

Rack-mounted panels sit on a roof that will eventually need replacing, and moving them costs money. Published removal and reinstall prices run about $200 to $500 per panel, so a 17-panel array could add roughly $3,400 to $8,500 at the next reroof (Roofing Brief arithmetic on HomeAdvisor and Fixr ranges). With Timberline Solar, the solar and the roof covering are the same layer, so that line does not exist in the same form; a later repair still needs a certified installer. See removing solar panels for roof repair for the full price breakdown.

Is GAF Energy still in business? 2023 to 2026 timeline

Yes, based on primary records available in October 2026. GAF Energy, the solar business unit of GAF (a Standard Industries company), still markets Timberline Solar ES 2 on gaf.com. In late 2025 it permanently closed its San Jose, California site, laid off 138 workers there, and centralized operations, manufacturing and R&D in Georgetown, Texas. We found no press release announcing a sale, ownership change or product discontinuation.

Date Event Primary source
November 2021 to April 2023 First-generation TLS-1 systems sold in select states CPSC recall 23-777
July 27, 2023 Recall of TLS-1 jumper modules and energy shingles (about 2,100 units) for fire hazard; one fire and five thermal incidents reported, no injuries; free repair CPSC recall 23-777
May 1, 2024 450,000 sq ft Georgetown, Texas plant opens; GAF says total capacity reaches 300 MW a year GAF Energy press release, May 1, 2024
February 19, 2025 Timberline Solar ES 2 launched: 57 W per shingle, 23% more than gen 1 GAF Energy press release, February 19, 2025
October 9, 2025 WARN notice: permanent closure of 5981 Optical Court, San Jose, 138 workers, effective December 13, 2025 California EDD WARN report, FY 2025 to 2026
October 2025 Company statement: aligning the business “to focus on key markets where solar is most compelling” and centralizing in Georgetown GAF Energy spokesperson to Community Impact, October 21, 2025

For buyers, the practical takeaway is narrower availability rather than a dead product. GAF’s statement points to focusing on key markets, so a GAF solar quote may not be offered in every state. As of December 2024, EnergySage listed Timberline Solar as available only in California, Colorado, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York; that list predates the 2025 refocus. Ask any installer to confirm in writing that they are a current GAF Energy Solar Certified contractor and that the enhanced warranty and any Solar Plus or Solar Max addendum will be registered.

Federal tax credit, state incentives and net metering in 2026

The federal 25D Residential Clean Energy Credit ended for homeowner-owned systems installed after December 31, 2025 (Public Law 119-21, sec. 70506). The IRS says the credit is claimed in the year property is installed, not merely purchased, so a Timberline Solar roof completed in 2026 does not qualify even if a deposit was paid in 2025. Check current IRS guidance and a tax professional.

Before the change, only the electricity-generating solar shingles qualified, never the whole roof, per the 2025 Form 5695 instructions. Any net-of-credit price on a GAF quote or older blog post for a 2026 install should be recomputed at the gross price.

Third-party ownership follows different rules. As enacted, the commercial 48E credit’s leasing bar names solar water heating and small wind, not rooftop PV, so a leased or PPA system’s owner may still claim 48E, subject to the begin-construction deadline of July 4, 2026, the placed-in-service deadline of December 31, 2027, and foreign-entity rules. Whether GAF Timberline Solar is offered under a lease or PPA in your area is a question for the installer. Our solar roof tax credit guide for 2026 covers the details.

State and utility programs may still lower the price. GAF’s own FAQ tells homeowners to check local utility incentive programs and a tax advisor because incentives vary by state. Net-metering terms set by your utility and state commission largely decide how much a 2026 system saves, so ask for the tariff name on any savings estimate.

Which should you pick? Decision guide

Timberline Solar makes the most sense when the roof needs replacing now, the main sunny planes are large and unshaded, and the look of racked panels is a deal-breaker. If the roof has many years left, rack-mounted panels are cheaper per watt and avoid tearing off a sound roof.

Your situation Better fit Why
Asphalt roof needs replacing within about 2 years, HOA or owner objects to visible panels GAF Timberline Solar One project, one crew, solar integrated with Timberline shingles

Frequently asked questions

How much do GAF solar shingles cost?

GAF does not publish a price. The CPSC’s 2023 recall notice records first-generation Timberline Solar systems selling for $40,000 to $100,000. GAF says the system is comparable to a new roof plus rack-mounted panels, which is roughly $30,700 to $38,200 for a 25 square roof with 7 kW at 2026 benchmark prices (Roofing Brief estimate). Quotes vary by roof size, pitch, shading and market.

Are GAF solar shingles worth it?

They can be when the roof needs replacing anyway and visible panels are unacceptable. On pure cost per watt, rack-mounted panels at about $2.60 per watt (EnergySage, October 2026) usually win, and ES 2 produces about 17 W per square foot against roughly 20.5 W for a current 430 W panel. No federal 25D credit applies to 2026 installs, so judge the gross price.

Who makes the best solar shingles?

No independent body ranks solar shingles. GAF Timberline Solar ES 2 is a nailable 57 W shingle installed by roofing crews, while the Tesla Solar Roof is a full glass-and-steel tile roof with a 25-year weatherization warranty. The better choice depends on price per watt, installer availability where you live, and the warranty terms each maker puts in writing.

How much does a Tesla solar roof cost for a 2,000 sq ft house?

Tesla does not publish fixed prices; quotes depend on roof complexity, active tile share and battery choice. EnergySage reported in December 2024 that many customers receive six-figure Tesla Solar Roof quotes, some surpassing $200,000. Our Tesla Solar Roof cost guide breaks typical 2026 ranges down by home size. No federal 25D credit applies to a 2026 install.

Can I get the federal tax credit for GAF Timberline Solar in 2026?

Not as a homeowner. Public Law 119-21 ended the 25D Residential Clean Energy Credit for property installed after December 31, 2025, and the IRS ties the credit to the installation year, not the payment date. Some state or utility programs may still apply. A lease or PPA owner may have separate commercial credit options; confirm with a tax professional.

Is GAF Energy still in business after closing its San Jose plant?

Yes. GAF Energy filed a California WARN notice on October 9, 2025 to permanently close its San Jose site and lay off 138 workers effective December 13, 2025, and moved operations, manufacturing and R&D to its Georgetown, Texas plant. It still markets Timberline Solar ES 2, but says it is focusing on key markets, so confirm availability locally.

How many watts does a GAF Timberline Solar shingle produce?

Each Timberline Solar ES 2 energy shingle is rated at 57 W, plus or minus 5 percent, under standard test conditions, according to GAF Energy data sheet SM512. That is 23 percent more than the 46 W first-generation shingle. About 30 energy shingles cover one roofing square, which GAF rates at 1.7 kW per square.
