GAF Timberline Natural Shadow Review: Specs, Warranty and NS vs HDZ

GAF Timberline Natural Shadow from GAF's own documents: 130 mph needs 6 nails, no impact rating, 10-yr algae warranty, $32 to $42.47 a bundle (Oct 2026).

GAF Timberline Natural Shadow Review: Specs, Warranty and NS vs HDZ

By The Roofing Brief Team. Last reviewed: October 2026. Specifications are taken from GAF’s own product page, brochure, Pro Field Guide and warranty documents; prices are from retailer listings we could read in October 2026.

GAF Timberline Natural Shadow (Timberline NS) is GAF’s entry-level laminated architectural shingle: the same 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inch footprint and 5 5/8 inch exposure as Timberline HDZ, a Class A fire rating, ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H wind classifications, and a Lifetime limited warranty. What it gives up is specific: no LayerLock technology, no WindProven eligibility, no impact rating, a 10-year algae warranty instead of 25, and seven colors instead of about two dozen. Supply-house listings we read in October 2026 priced it at $32.00 to $42.47 per bundle.

This page is the Natural Shadow review. If a quote in front of you names HDZ, our separate GAF Timberline HDZ review covers that shingle in depth; below, HDZ appears only as the comparison point a Natural Shadow buyer needs.

What is GAF Timberline Natural Shadow?

GAF Timberline Natural Shadow is a two-layer laminated (architectural) asphalt shingle in GAF’s Timberline family, sold as “Timberline NS.” GAF’s product FAQ says NS stands for Natural Shadow, a name for the “classic shadow effect” that gives an even-toned, wood-shake look. GAF positions it as the “practically priced” Timberline, below HDZ and UHDZ.

The visible difference is the shadow line. GAF’s own NS FAQ states that Timberline NS shingles “do not feature High Definition shadow bands,” the patented darker granule bands that give HDZ its contrast. On the roof, that reads as a flatter, more uniform tone. Some buyers want exactly that; others pay up for the deeper HDZ or the Dual Shadow Line on UHDZ.

GAF still lists Timberline NS as current in October 2026, with 521 reviews averaging 4.8 out of 5 on gaf.com. Those are manufacturer-hosted reviews, a satisfaction signal rather than an independent test.

Timberline NS specifications

Timberline NS uses the same nominal footprint as Timberline HDZ and UHDZ: 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inches with a 5 5/8 inch exposure, 64 pieces and 3 bundles per square. GAF lists it as UL 790 Class A for fire and ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H for wind. GAF does not publish a bundle weight on the product page.

A quick check on the coverage claim: one exposed shingle face is 39 3/8 x 5 5/8 inches, or 221.5 square inches. Multiply by 64 pieces and you get 14,175 square inches, which is 98.4 square feet. So three bundles cover about 98.4 square feet, not a full 100, the same figure GAF prints on its LayerLock installation sheet for the same-size HDZ. That 1.6% shortfall comes before any cutting waste.

GAF’s standards list needs careful reading. The NS page also shows ASTM D3462, Miami-Dade product control approval and ESR-1475, but GAF’s own footnotes tie those entries to specific plants making other lines (Royal Sovereign, Marquis WeatherMax and, for Miami-Dade, Timberline UHDZ), so we have left them out of the table. If your code official asks for an ASTM D3462 statement or a specific approval number, ask the supplier for the document that matches the bundle wrapper.

What class shingle is GAF Natural Shadow?

GAF Natural Shadow is a Class A fire-rated shingle (UL 790) with ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H wind classifications, the top class in each wind test. It has no impact class. GAF’s FAQ says Timberline NS does “not carry a formal impact-resistance rating,” so it is neither Class 3 nor Class 4 under UL 2218.

That last point matters if you have seen “Natural Shadow Class 3” in search results. In GAF’s current lineup, Timberline HDZ passes UL 2218 Class 3 (packages bearing the Class 3 statement), while Timberline UHDZ and Timberline AS II carry Class 4. If your insurer offers a premium credit for impact-rated roofing, Natural Shadow will not qualify for it. Our guide to Class 4 impact-resistant shingles covers when that upgrade tends to pay back.

Natural Shadow vs HDZ vs UHDZ: what is actually different

The three Timberline shingles share size, exposure, bundle count and Class A fire rating. The differences are LayerLock (HDZ and UHDZ only), which enables 4-nail 130 mph coverage and the WindProven warranty; algae coverage (10, 25 and 30 years); impact class (none, Class 3, Class 4); color count; and which enhanced GAF warranties list the shingle.

One correction to a common claim: LayerLock and StrikeZone are not two names for one thing. GAF’s LayerLock sell sheet (RESTZ114) describes LayerLock as technology that “mechanically fuses the common bond between overlapping layers,” and says that added strength “powers the StrikeZone,” the wide nailing area. Natural Shadow has neither. It has a painted nail guide line instead.

The shingle price gap between NS and HDZ can be small. At one Georgia supply house in October 2026, Natural Shadow Charcoal listed at $35.00 per bundle and Timberline HDZ at $36.66, a gap of $1.66 per bundle or $4.98 per square. On a 25-square roof ordered at 28 squares to allow about 10% waste, that is 84 bundles and $139.44 in total. The bigger difference is in the warranty paperwork, covered next.

Wind rating: why Natural Shadow needs six nails for 130 mph

Timberline Natural Shadow carries a 15-year limited wind warranty of 110 mph as standard. GAF raises that to 130 mph only with “special installation,” which for shingles without LayerLock means 6 nails per shingle and GAF starter strip products at both the eaves and the rakes. HDZ and UHDZ reach 130 mph with 4 nails, and can qualify for WindProven.

The wording comes from GAF’s Shingle and Accessory Limited Warranty (RESWT160L-0426, for products installed after January 1, 2025): “Special Installation for all other GAF Shingles requires use of 6 nails per shingle and GAF Starter Strip Products installed at the eaves and rakes.” GAF’s Pro Field Guide specifies starter with factory-applied adhesive.

In practice, six-nailing adds 128 nails per square (384 instead of 256), or about 3,200 extra nails on a 25-square roof. Ask the contractor to write “6-nail pattern with GAF starter at eaves and rakes” into the scope if you want the 130 mph coverage. WindProven is not available on Natural Shadow at any nail count: GAF’s WindProven sell sheet lists only Timberline HDZ, UHDZ, AS II and HDZ RS as eligible shingles.

Know what the wind warranty pays. GAF’s base warranty reimburses the reasonable cost of replacing blown-off shingles and hand-sealing unsealed ones, with a stated maximum of the cost to hand-seal every shingle on the roof. Underlayment, metal and flashing are excluded. Read the exclusions before relying on it: winds over the warranted speed and damage before the shingles seal are not covered.

Timberline Natural Shadow warranty, explained

Every Timberline NS roof gets GAF’s Shingle and Accessory Limited Warranty automatically: a Lifetime term for an individual owner of a single-family detached home, with a 10-year non-prorated Smart Choice period that covers replacement shingles and the labor to repair or re-cover. GAF does not pay tear-off or disposal under this base warranty. Enhanced warranties require a GAF-certified contractor and registration.

Warranty terms change; the version in effect on your installation date governs.

Proration after year 10 is simple arithmetic. GAF divides the months since installation by 600 for years 11 through 40 and reduces its contribution by that share, so a defect claim at year 15 (180 months) is reduced by 30%, and one at year 25 (300 months) by 50%. From year 41, GAF’s contribution is 20%. Labor is no longer covered after the Smart Choice period on the base warranty.

Transfer rules differ by warranty. The base warranty transfers once; the second owner must notify GAF in writing within one year of the sale. If the sale happens inside the 10-year Smart Choice period, the buyer gets the same coverage; after it, coverage drops to two years. On System Plus and Golden Pledge, a transfer within the first 20 years keeps the original coverage. Transfers are handled by email to ccp@gaf.com with proof of the sale date, per GAF’s warranty page.

If a quote promises “Golden Pledge” on a Natural Shadow roof, ask the contractor to show where the current Golden Pledge document lists Timberline NS. On the documents we read, the Silver Pledge (Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor, 4 accessories) is the highest workmanship warranty that names NS.

StainGuard algae protection on Natural Shadow

Timberline NS carries GAF’s 10-year StainGuard algae limited warranty, and only on bundles bearing the StainGuard logo. The non-prorated period is 1 year, after which GAF’s contribution to cleaning or replacement shrinks with each month of use. GAF’s NS page also notes that StainGuard algae protection is “NOT available in the Western US.”

The math shows how quickly that coverage thins. A claim for blue-green algae streaking in month 60 of the 120-month term would be reduced by half (60 divided by 120). HDZ’s StainGuard Plus runs 25 years with a 10-year non-prorated period, and up to 15 years non-prorated through a certified contractor on an enhanced warranty. In humid Southeast and Gulf climates, that gap is the strongest practical argument for HDZ. Our shingle algae warranty comparison lines up every major brand’s terms.

Timberline Natural Shadow colors

GAF’s Timberline NS page lists seven colors: Barkwood, Charcoal, Hickory, Pewter Gray, Shakewood, Slate and Weathered Wood. GAF’s FAQ names Barkwood, Weathered Wood, Charcoal and Pewter Gray first and says Hickory, Shakewood and Slate are “available in select areas.” GAF’s May 2026 Timberline brochure shows only the core four for NS.

NS color Availability per GAF FAQ
Barkwood Named among GAF’s most popular colors
Weathered Wood Named among GAF’s most popular colors
Charcoal Named among GAF’s most popular colors
Pewter Gray Named among GAF’s most popular colors
Hickory Select areas
Shakewood Select areas
Slate Select areas

GAF does not publish sales by color, so no one can say with data which Natural Shadow color sells most. GAF’s FAQ calls Barkwood, Weathered Wood, Charcoal and Pewter Gray “some of GAF’s most popular colors,” and the brochure shows only those four for NS, so they are the likeliest to be in stock for a future repair. GAF also lists a Timberline NS Arctic White for City of Los Angeles and LA County compliance. Our GAF shingle colors guide covers pairing with siding and brick.

How much does GAF Timberline Natural Shadow cost?

Retailer listings we could read in October 2026 priced Timberline Natural Shadow at $32.00 to $42.47 per bundle, which is $96 to $127 per square or roughly $0.96 to $1.27 per square foot for shingles alone. Installed, an architectural asphalt roof runs $5 to $8 per square foot in our 2026 roofing cost report, so the shingles are a minority of the bill.

Retailer (listing seen Oct 2026) Location Product Per bundle Per square (x3)
ASO Roofing Supply Houston area, TX Timberline Natural Shadow, Charcoal $32.00 $96.00
A+ Roofing Supply Sugar Hill, GA Timberline Natural Shadow, Charcoal $35.00 $105.00
Norcross Roofing Supply Online listing Timberline Natural Shadow $42.47 $127.41
A+ Roofing Supply (comparison) Sugar Hill, GA Timberline HDZ, Shakewood $36.66 $109.98

Listing prices exclude tax, delivery, and contractor pricing, which is often negotiated by volume. We could not load the Home Depot and Lowe’s product pages that rank for this keyword, so they are not in the table; check your local store directly.

A worked example, using a 25-square roof ordered at 28 squares (84 bundles): Natural Shadow at $35.00 per bundle is $2,940 in shingles. Using the cost report’s $5 to $8 per square foot range for the 2,500 square feet of roof, the installed job lands around $12,500 to $20,000 (Roofing Brief estimate), so the shingles are about 15% to 24% of the total. GAF’s own NS page cites an average asphalt roof replacement of $17,631 in 2025, from the Home Improvement Research Institute’s Ipsos Project Decision Study, which sits inside that range.

At the Georgia store above, choosing HDZ instead added about $139 in shingles on that roof, about 1% of the installed price or less. Where the gap is that small, HDZ’s 25-year algae warranty, Class 3 rating and WindProven eligibility can be cheap upgrades; where your supplier’s gap is wider, rerun the math with your own quotes.

How Timberline Natural Shadow is installed

Natural Shadow installs like other Timberline laminates, with one difference that matters: without LayerLock, the nails must land in the double-ply area. GAF’s Pro Field Guide (RESGN103, September 2025) says to nail a nominal 6 inches from the bottom of the shingle along the painted nail guide line, catching 1/4 inch of the backer strip, and warns that high-nailing “can cause product failure.”

  1. Confirm the deck and slope. GAF requires a slope of 2:12 or more, with a double layer of underlayment from 2:12 up to 4:12, over a minimum 3/8 inch plywood or OSB deck.
  2. Install GAF starter at eaves and rakes. For maximum wind coverage, GAF calls for its starter strip products with factory-applied adhesive at both edges.
  3. Lay the first course with a full shingle, flush with the starter, overhanging the eave and rake edges by 1/4 to 3/4 inch (required on Golden Pledge and Silver Pledge installations).
  4. Step the next courses. Trim 6 inches from the rake end of the first shingle in course two, 11 inches in course three, and 17 inches in course four, then start course five with a full shingle and repeat.
  5. Align each shingle to the tops of the saw-teeth below for the 5 5/8 inch exposure. GAF warns that overexposing can cause cupping and push nails above the double-ply area.
  6. Nail at least 4 per shingle on the guide line, or 6 for the 130 mph wind warranty and where local code requires it. Never nail into the sealant strip.
  7. Hand-seal in cold weather. GAF’s warranty notes that shingles installed in fall or winter may not seal until spring, and failure to hand-seal in cold weather is excluded from coverage.

GAF also states that racking (installing straight up the roof) is not accepted on Golden Pledge and Silver Pledge Timberline installations, because it can distort the pattern and create vertical color lines that GAF does not treat as a defect.

Is GAF Timberline Natural Shadow a good shingle?

Timberline Natural Shadow is a sound budget architectural shingle when it is installed to GAF’s instructions: it has the same footprint, Class A fire rating and top wind classifications as HDZ, and a Lifetime limited warranty. It is a weaker fit in hail country, humid algae-prone climates, high-wind coastal markets, and anywhere you want the strongest GAF workmanship warranty.

Your situation Better fit Why
Rental, flip, or a home you plan to sell within a few years, inland and low hail Timberline NS Lowest Timberline price tier; same size and fire rating
Hail-prone area or insurer offers an impact-rated discount UHDZ or AS II (Class 4) NS has no impact rating

Matching a repair on an existing NS roof Timberline NS in the same color Same exposure and shadow; GAF warns exact color match is not guaranteed

For how NS fits against the rest of the range, see our GAF shingles review.

Common complaints and limitations, from the record

The documented weak points of Timberline Natural Shadow come from GAF’s own paperwork, not from anecdotes. The product has no impact rating, a 10-year algae warranty with only a 1-year non-prorated period that GAF says is not offered in the Western US, no WindProven eligibility, and a short color list with regional gaps.

  • High-nailing sensitivity. GAF’s field guide flags high-nailed Natural Shadow shingles as a cause of product failure because nails can miss the double-ply area. HDZ’s wider StrikeZone was GAF’s answer to exactly this problem.
  • Cold-season sealing. GAF’s warranty states that self-sealing shingles installed in fall or winter may not seal until spring, and blow-offs before sealing are not a manufacturing defect.
  • Color match on repairs. GAF reserves the right to discontinue or change colors and states replacement shingles “may not be an exact match.”
  • Unregistered enhanced warranties. System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge must be registered by the contractor. GAF advises calling 1-877-423-7663 if the warranty has not arrived within 60 days of completion.

Consumer Reports lists Timberline Natural Shadow in its lab-tested asphalt shingle ratings (strength, wind, nailing and impact), but the scores sit behind a paywall, so we do not quote them. We have not included forum anecdotes, because individual reports cannot be checked.

Frequently asked questions

Is GAF Timberline Natural Shadow a good shingle?

For a budget architectural roof, yes, in many cases. Timberline NS shares HDZ’s size and exposure, is UL 790 Class A for fire, carries ASTM D3161 Class F and D7158 Class H wind classifications, and has a Lifetime limited warranty. It lacks an impact rating, WindProven eligibility and HDZ’s 25-year algae warranty, so it suits mild, low-hail markets best.

What class shingle is GAF Natural Shadow?

GAF Natural Shadow is Class A for fire under UL 790, Class F under ASTM D3161 (110 mph test) and Class H under ASTM D7158 (150 mph test). It has no impact class: GAF states Timberline NS does not carry a formal impact-resistance rating, so it is not Class 3 or Class 4 under UL 2218, unlike HDZ (Class 3) and UHDZ (Class 4).

What is the difference between GAF Natural Shadow and HDZ?

Both measure 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inches with a 5 5/8 inch exposure. HDZ adds High Definition shadow bands, LayerLock with the StrikeZone nailing area, 130 mph coverage with 4 nails, WindProven eligibility, a 25-year StainGuard Plus algae warranty, a UL 2218 Class 3 rating and about two dozen colors. Natural Shadow needs 6 nails for 130 mph and has a 10-year algae warranty.

What is the most popular GAF Timberline shingle color?

GAF does not publish color sales figures. For Timberline NS, GAF’s FAQ names Barkwood, Weathered Wood, Charcoal and Pewter Gray as “some of GAF’s most popular colors,” and lists Hickory, Shakewood and Slate as select-area colors. Always view full-size samples on site, because screens and small chips misrepresent granule blends.

Is Timberline Natural Shadow eligible for the WindProven warranty?

No. GAF’s WindProven Limited Wind Warranty covers only shingles with LayerLock technology, and GAF’s eligibility sheet lists Timberline HDZ, UHDZ, AS II and HDZ RS. Natural Shadow’s best wind coverage is the standard 15-year limited wind warranty at 130 mph, which requires 6 nails per shingle and GAF starter strips at the eaves and rakes.

How much does a bundle of GAF Timberline Natural Shadow cost?

Supply-house listings we read in October 2026 ranged from $32.00 to $42.47 per bundle, or about $96 to $127 per square, before tax and delivery. Prices vary by region, color and order size, and contractors often buy at negotiated rates. Installed architectural asphalt roofs typically run $5 to $8 per square foot in our 2026 cost report.

How many bundles of Natural Shadow cover a square, and how much do they weigh?

GAF specifies 3 bundles and 64 pieces per square, with about 33.3 square feet per bundle on retailer listings. GAF does not publish weight on its product page; a retailer listing shows about 70 pounds per bundle, and Consumer Reports lists Natural Shadow at about 210 pounds per square. Add a waste allowance when ordering.

Is GAF Timberline Natural Shadow being discontinued?

Not according to GAF’s own materials as of October 2026. Timberline NS remains on gaf.com, appears in GAF’s May 2026 Timberline Collection brochure, and is listed among qualifying Lifetime shingles for GAF’s system warranties. GAF does reserve the right to change products and colors, so confirm current colors with your supplier before ordering.
