GAF Roofing Academy: Free Roofer Training, CARE Credits and Certification Tiers (2026)

GAF Roofing Academy is tuition-free: 3 to 5 day classes and 3,000+ job placements. Plus CARE credits, Master Elite minimums and how to verify a GAF roofer.

GAF Roofing Academy: Free Roofer Training, CARE Credits and Certification Tiers (2026)

The GAF Roofing Academy is GAF’s tuition-free training program for people entering roofing: a 3 to 5 day in-person course in low-slope installation, steep-slope installation or in-home sales that ends with job interviews at GAF-certified contractors. It sits inside the GAF Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence (CARE), which also trains working roofers. GAF reported on June 8, 2026 that the Academy had trained more than 5,400 people and placed more than 3,000 in jobs since 2020.

The Academy is the entry point of a larger ladder. CARE classes keep working roofers trained, and a GAF contractor certification (Certified, Certified Plus or Master Elite) is a business-level agreement that controls which GAF enhanced warranties a company can offer. This guide explains each rung from GAF’s own pages and program documents, then compares it with Owens Corning and CertainTeed.

GAF Roofing Academy key numbers at a glance

The figures below are the ones people search for first: cost, length, scale, placement rate and what certified contractors must keep up each year. Program statistics are GAF’s own reported numbers, not independent counts, and they change as GAF updates its pages.

What is the GAF Roofing Academy?

The GAF Roofing Academy is a free, short-course career program run by GAF for people with little or no roofing experience. GAF’s program page says it combines classroom and hands-on training in residential and commercial installation, solar, in-home sales and restoration, and that graduates “may have opportunities to interview with and get hired by contractors certified by GAF.”

GAF lists the Academy under its CARE training center as “New career training,” alongside residential and commercial contractor courses. In other words, the Academy is the part of CARE built for new entrants, while the rest of CARE serves people already working in roofing.

Each class is hosted at a GAF training center, a distributor branch or a partner contractor’s facility. The calendar listings GAF publishes promise the same core package: a GAF Roofing Academy certificate of completion, a free OSHA 10 course outside class hours on request, light breakfast and lunch each day, and interviews with a named hiring contractor or a group of local contractors at the end.

That certificate of completion is a training record. It is not a state roofing license, and it does not make the graduate a “GAF certified” contractor, a status GAF grants only to roofing companies that sign its certification agreement.

How much does the GAF Roofing Academy cost?

The GAF Roofing Academy costs nothing in tuition. GAF calls it a “tuition-free” program on its Academy page and in its June 2026 press release, and a 2023 GAF interview with Academy training manager Kimberly Santiago answered the cost question with “It’s completely free.” Students cover their own travel to the class site.

In that same 2023 interview, GAF said graduates who show proof of employment are sent a toolkit matched to residential or commercial work, and that OSHA 10 training was part of the class. Current calendar listings describe OSHA 10 as free and available outside training hours on request, so ask about tools and OSHA 10 when you register, because offers can differ by class.

For veterans, GAF says the Academy is approved for the Department of Defense SkillBridge program and that veterans do not have to use any of their benefits to attend.

How long does the GAF Roofing Academy take, and where are classes?

Most GAF Roofing Academy classes run 3 to 5 weekdays, even when the listing is titled “1 Week Roofing Academy.” The 2023 GAF interview described one-week and two-week formats, for example a week of residential installation followed by a week of in-home sales. Classes move between cities, so the published calendar is the only reliable guide to what is open.

The table lists every class on GAF’s public Academy calendar when we checked on October 12, 2026. All seven were low-slope (commercial) installation or in-home sales; none was a steep-slope shingle installation class, which matters if you specifically want residential roofing work.

Who is the GAF Roofing Academy for?

The GAF Roofing Academy is for adults who want an entry-level roofing job and have no degree or roofing background. GAF’s June 2026 press release calls it a “no-degree-required” program and names veterans, justice-involved individuals, women and other groups underrepresented in roofing as audiences it recruits.

GAF also runs Academy classes with schools and workforce partners. Its press release quotes North American Trade Schools in Baltimore, and a November 2025 GAF blog post says the Academy and “its accredited apprenticeship program” helped Advanced Industrial Roofing of Massillon, Ohio, reach six local vocational schools. GAF’s veteran partners named in a November 2025 post include the Army Career Skills Program, NextOp, Work for Warriors and Team Rubicon.

GAF says applicants are interviewed before acceptance, because the course is aimed at people looking for work in the industry. Contractors can also contact the Academy to recruit graduates.

How to enroll in the GAF Roofing Academy

  1. Open the calendar. Go to gaf.com/roofingacademy and choose “See schedule,” which opens the public class calendar.
  2. Pick a track and city you can reach daily. Classes are in person and transportation is your responsibility, so check the host address and hours.
  3. Register for the class. GAF’s 2023 interview says applicants provide general information and register for the classes they want. On an iPhone, the calendar asks you to allow pop-ups in Safari first.
  4. Complete the screening interview. GAF interviews applicants to confirm they are seeking work in roofing.
  5. Attend every day and ask for OSHA 10. Listings say OSHA 10 is offered free outside class hours on request.
  6. Interview on the final day. Hiring contractors interview graduates at the end of class or at a job fair. Questions go to RoofingAcademy@gaf.com.

How GAF training fits together: Academy, CARE and certification

GAF training has three layers that are easy to confuse. The Roofing Academy prepares individuals for a first job. CARE courses train working roofers and sales staff. GAF certification is a contract between GAF and a roofing company that sets which warranties that company may register. Only the third layer is what homeowners mean by a “GAF certified roofer.”

Layer Who it serves Cost to attendee Format What you get Source
GAF Roofing Academy Individuals entering roofing Tuition-free 3 to 5 day in-person class Certificate of completion, interviews with hiring contractors GAF Academy page; class calendar

GAF contractor certification Roofing companies Not published; set by agreement Company application and annual review Right to register System Plus, Silver Pledge or Golden Pledge warranties GAF Residential Program Guidelines, 3/2/2026

GAF CARE courses and learning credits

GAF CARE, the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence, is GAF’s contractor training arm. GAF says it offers classes “in-person, online, and on-demand,” with many taught in Spanish by native speakers. Live classes require a GAF Learning Portal profile, and each listed class shows the learning credits it carries.

CARE’s catalog splits into residential (steep-slope) training, commercial (low-slope) training, business acumen and storm restoration. Commercial crews can also book CARE Trailer Training, where trainers bring a trailer of TPO membrane, welders and roof deck mockups to the contractor; GAF says to request it through a GAF territory manager. The Learning Portal also hosts short on-demand product modules, many 2 to 11 minutes long.

The table samples CARE’s live calendar for October to December 2026. It shows a pattern GAF does not spell out: credits are not proportional to hours.

Roofing Brief arithmetic on the 10-credit floor: if each listed 1-hour webinar counts for 3 credits as shown, four webinars (12 credits, about 4 hours) clear a Master Elite contractor’s 10-credit yearly minimum, as would the single 2-day in-person sales class listed at 10 credits. GAF’s 3/2/2026 guidelines say credits can be earned “virtually or in-person,” but the guideline section that should explain how credits are earned has no further text in the version posted on gaf.com, so contractors should confirm the counting rules with their GAF territory manager.

GAF contractor certification tiers and how training ties in

GAF certifies residential roofing companies at three levels: GAF Certified, GAF Certified Plus and GAF Master Elite. All three must be state licensed where the principal place of business requires it and carry $1 million in liability insurance plus workers’ compensation, per GAF’s Residential Program Guidelines (last updated 3/2/2026). GAF says it may also weigh years of roofing experience and customer reviews.

Tier or award Enhanced warranties it can register Published requirements Claim GAF allows the contractor to make
GAF Certified System Plus License where required, $1M liability, workers’ comp “Only 7% of roofers in North America are invited”
GAF Certified Plus System Plus, Silver Pledge (10 years workmanship) Same baseline “Only a select group of roofers in North America are invited”
GAF Master Elite System Plus, Silver Pledge, Golden Pledge (25 to 30 years workmanship) Baseline plus yearly renewal minimums, including 10 learning credits “Only 2% of roofers in North America are invited”
President’s Club 3-Star (award) All of the above plus the President’s Club Limited Warranty (40 years non-prorated workmanship) Earned annually by Master Elite contractors GAF’s “highest distinction” for Master Elite contractors

Source: GAF Residential Program Guidelines, last updated 3/2/2026; GAF President’s Club Limited Warranty sell sheet RESWT219. Percentages are statements GAF permits certified contractors to make, not independent census counts.

Master Elite renewal minimums under the 3/2/2026 guidelines

Since January 1, 2025, a GAF Master Elite contractor must hit three yearly minimums to be considered for renewal: 1,000 rewards squares of GAF shingles, 500 warranty squares registered under Silver or Golden Pledge, and 10 learning credits. GAF adds that meeting them “does not guarantee Master Elite status” and that other requirements apply.

Renewal minimum Amount per year Deadline detail in the guidelines Roofing Brief illustration
Rewards squares (shingles only) 1,000 Proof of purchase must reach GAF Rewards by January 31 of the following year, earlier than the March 31 points deadline 1,000 squares is 100,000 sq ft of shingles; at 25 squares per roof, about 40 roofs
Warranty squares (Silver and Golden Pledge) 500 Warranty must be registered by December 31 of the calendar year At 25 squares per roof, about 20 Pledge-registered roofs
Learning credits 10 Earned virtually or in person Four 3-credit CARE webinars, or one 10-credit 2-day class

Source: GAF Residential Program Guidelines, last updated 3/2/2026. One roofing square equals 100 sq ft; the 25-squares-per-roof figure is an illustrative assumption, not a GAF number, and real roof sizes vary widely.

The training requirement is the smallest of the three hurdles in hours. The volume and warranty-registration floors are what separate Master Elite companies from smaller GAF Certified shops, which is why a newer or lower-volume company may stay at Certified or Certified Plus even with well-trained crews.

How do you become a GAF certified roofer?

Individuals do not become “GAF certified”; roofing companies do. A company applies through GAF’s certification form or its local GAF territory manager, meets the license and insurance baseline, and signs GAF’s certification agreement. A person who wants to work for a certified company can start with the Roofing Academy, get hired, then build skills through CARE.

  1. Get licensed where required. GAF requires a state license in the state of the principal place of business if that state requires one.
  2. Carry the insurance. $1 million in liability coverage and workers’ compensation, with details set in the agreement.
  3. Apply. Complete the “Find out more about GAF certification” form on GAF’s roofer certification page or contact a territory manager.
  4. Pass GAF’s review. GAF may consider years of roofing experience and customer reviews.
  5. Follow the program rules. Use the required consumer disclosure in advertising and comply with GAF’s code of conduct.
  6. Move up tiers. Master Elite adds the yearly squares, warranty and learning-credit minimums.

What is the GAF President’s Club?

The GAF President’s Club is a yearly award, not a separate certification. GAF gives 1-Star, 2-Star or 3-Star awards to Master Elite contractors who meet its award criteria. A July 2025 GAF blog post says fewer than half of Master Elite contractors qualify and that the award reflects a minimum number of complete GAF systems installed with top warranties plus strong customer reviews.

Only 3-Star winners can offer the President’s Club Limited Warranty, which GAF’s sell sheet describes as Lifetime workmanship coverage, non-prorated for 40 years, on a single-family detached home with qualifying Timberline UHDZ, Timberline AS II or designer shingles plus five GAF accessories. The award must be re-earned each year and runs from February 1 of the award year to January 31 of the next.

How homeowners can verify a GAF-certified contractor

To verify a GAF certification, use GAF’s “Verify my contractor” page or contractor locator, then match the tier to the warranty named in the bid. GAF also confirms President’s Club warranty eligibility through Contractor Services at 877-423-7663 (option 2, then option 1) or ccp@gaf.com. A Roofing Academy certificate on a worker’s résumé is not a company certification.

  1. Search the company name. Use gaf.com/en-us/roofing-contractors/verify or the residential locator and open the profile’s “Certifications and Awards.”
  2. Match tier to warranty. Golden Pledge requires Master Elite; Silver Pledge requires Certified Plus or Master Elite; System Plus requires any certified tier.
  3. Check the award year. President’s Club status expires each January 31, so an older badge may not authorize the President’s Club warranty today.
  4. Get the warranty named in writing. The contract should say System Plus, Silver Pledge, Golden Pledge or President’s Club, not just “lifetime.”
  5. Verify the license and insurance separately. GAF certification does not replace a state license lookup or a certificate of insurance.
  6. Read the disclosure. GAF requires certified contractors to state they are not GAF employees or agents and may receive loyalty rewards for offering GAF enhanced warranties.

The full warranty ladder and accessory counts for each tier are in our GAF shingles review. For brand-neutral vetting steps, use the 15-point roofing contractor checklist.

GAF vs Owens Corning vs CertainTeed contractor training

All three big shingle makers tie their strongest warranties to tiered contractor programs, but they train differently. GAF publishes a tuition-free entry program for new workers plus CARE credits for its top tier. Owens Corning bundles Owens Corning University into its contractor network. CertainTeed requires a written installer test for every ShingleMaster level, and its current pages list ShingleMaster PREMIER as the top tier; contractors that held SELECT ShingleMaster report moving to PREMIER for 2026.

Roofing workforce context: where the Academy fits

US roofers held 166,900 jobs in 2025, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5% growth from 2025 to 2035 with about 12,000 openings a year, mostly to replace workers who leave. BLS says most roofers learn on the job and some enter through apprenticeships, where starting pay is usually 50% of the journey-worker rate.

Measure Value Source

Roofing Brief arithmetic: 3,000 placements over the roughly six years from 2020 to June 2026 average about 500 a year, about 4% of the 12,000 yearly roofer openings BLS projects. That overstates the share slightly, because some placements are sales or support roles. GAF’s own figures also show recent acceleration: its November 2025 blog reported 4,400 trained and 2,500 placed, so the June 2026 totals imply about 1,000 more trainees and 500 more placements in roughly six and a half months. The 3,000 placed out of 5,400 trained works out to about 56%, consistent with GAF’s “nearly 60%.”

GAF’s “around $40,000” starting figure sits between the BLS 10th-percentile wage ($37,460) and the median ($55,440). Pay by state and experience is broken down in how much roofers make, and union and registered apprenticeship routes are sized in our roofing apprenticeship and training report.

Which GAF training path should you pick?

Pick the GAF program by where you are now: no roofing job yet, already on a crew, or running a company that wants GAF’s enhanced warranties. A homeowner only needs the verification steps, not the training.

Your situation Best GAF option What to do first
No roofing experience, want a job GAF Roofing Academy Check the calendar for a track and city you can reach daily
Want residential shingle work specifically Academy steep-slope class when listed, or a job with a certified residential contractor plus CARE residential courses Watch the calendar; the October to November 2026 list had no steep-slope class

Frequently asked questions

How much does GAF Roofing Academy cost?

The GAF Roofing Academy is tuition-free. GAF describes it that way on its program page and in its June 2026 press release, and its class listings add a free OSHA 10 course on request plus light breakfast and lunch each day. Students pay for their own transportation to the class site. Veterans do not have to use any of their benefits, according to GAF.

How long is the GAF Roofing Academy?

Most GAF Roofing Academy classes run 3 to 5 weekdays, even when listed as a one-week academy. The October and November 2026 calendar showed three-day classes in Dallas, Cayce, Richmond and Atlanta, a four-day class in Fontana and a five-day class in Georgetown, Texas. GAF has also described two-week formats that pair installation with in-home sales.

What is GAF training?

GAF training covers two programs. The GAF Roofing Academy is a free entry-level course for people seeking a first roofing job. GAF CARE, the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence, trains working roofers, sales staff and owners through live webinars, in-person classes, on-demand video and CARE Trailer crew sessions, with learning credits listed on each class.

How do you become a GAF certified roofer?

GAF certifies roofing companies, not individual workers. A company needs a state license where required, $1 million in liability insurance and workers’ compensation, then applies through GAF’s certification page or a territory manager. GAF may weigh years in business and customer reviews. An individual can start at the Roofing Academy and join a certified company.

Is it hard to get GAF certified?

Basic GAF Certified status has a modest published bar: license where required, $1 million liability insurance and workers’ compensation. Master Elite is much harder. GAF says only 2% of North American roofers are invited, and since 2025 Master Elite contractors must reach 1,000 rewards squares, 500 Pledge warranty squares and 10 learning credits a year to be considered for renewal.

What percentage of roofers are GAF certified?

GAF’s 3/2/2026 program guidelines let contractors say that only 7% of roofers in North America are invited to become GAF Certified and only 2% are invited to become GAF Master Elite. These are GAF’s own marketing statements rather than an independent census, and GAF does not publish a figure for the Certified Plus tier.

Does a GAF Roofing Academy certificate make you a GAF certified roofer?

No. Academy graduates receive a GAF Roofing Academy certificate of completion, which shows they finished entry-level training. GAF certification is a separate agreement between GAF and a roofing company that controls which enhanced warranties the company can register. A graduate who joins a Master Elite company works for a certified contractor but holds no GAF certification personally.

What is the difference between GAF Master Elite and President’s Club?

Master Elite is GAF’s top contractor certification and the only tier that can offer the Golden Pledge warranty. President’s Club is a yearly 1-Star, 2-Star or 3-Star award that GAF gives to Master Elite contractors meeting its award criteria. Only 3-Star winners can offer the President’s Club Limited Warranty, with 40 years of non-prorated workmanship coverage.
