GAF Shingles Review (2026): Lineup, Warranties and Complaint Record

GAF shingles review for 2026: all 13 current lines compared, the warranty ladder up to Golden Pledge, BBB record, the Timberline lawsuit and solar recall.

GAF Shingles Review (2026): Lineup, Warranties and Complaint Record

By The Roofing Brief Team. Last reviewed: October 2026. Product specs, warranty terms and ownership facts come from GAF’s own product pages, warranty legal samples and contractor program guidelines; complaint, lawsuit and recall facts come from the BBB profile, federal court records and the CPSC recall database, as cited.

GAF shingles reviews mostly agree on one point, and the documents back it up: GAF sells code-listed, widely available shingles, and the quality of your roof depends on which GAF warranty your contractor can register. Every current GAF line carries a UL 790 Class A fire listing and ASTM D3161 Class F wind classification on GAF’s product pages. The weak spots are in the fine print: accessory counts, contractor tiers, one-time transfers, and no hail coverage, even on Class 4 shingles.

This page is the brand-level review: who owns GAF, every residential shingle GAF lists in October 2026, the full warranty ladder, certification tiers and the complaint record. Each product has its own deep dive. For the flagship, read our GAF Timberline HDZ review.

GAF at a glance: key numbers

These are the figures most GAF shingle buyers look for, each traced to the document it came from. Marketing claims such as market share are GAF’s own statements, quoted as GAF makes them, not independent findings. Warranty terms are from GAF’s April 2026 legal samples and its online comparison guide.

Are GAF shingles good? The short verdict

Yes, for most homes GAF shingles are a sound, mid-market choice, with three caveats. First, base coverage is materials-first: after year 10, labor is not covered and payouts are prorated. Second, the long non-prorated and workmanship terms GAF advertises require a certified contractor, a minimum number of GAF accessories and registration. Third, impact ratings are lab results, not hail warranties.

GAF Timberline HDZ is GAF’s top-selling shingle by GAF’s own description, and its gaf.com page shows 4.8 out of 5 from 19,784 reviews. Those reviews are hosted and collected by GAF, so read them as a satisfaction signal rather than an independent rating. The independent record (BBB, courts, CPSC) is covered further down.

Who makes GAF shingles, and where are they made?

GAF shingles are made by GAF Materials LLC, a Standard Industries company headquartered at 1 Campus Drive, Parsippany, New Jersey. GAF says its asphalt shingles are made in the U.S.A. with domestic and imported materials, and that it runs manufacturing operations and corporate offices in over 30 U.S. locations. Standard Industries is privately held, so GAF does not publish public-company financials.

GAF traces its history to The Standard Paint Company, founded in 1886 with 18 employees, according to GAF’s company FAQ. Its sister businesses under Standard Industries include Siplast (commercial membranes) and GAF Energy, the solar roofing unit that makes Timberline Solar. Electrek reported in December 2025 that GAF Energy closed its San Jose, California hub and now makes solar shingles only at its Georgetown, Texas factory, citing a California WARN notice.

GAF’s scale claims, such as “1 in 4 homes in the U.S. protected by a GAF roof” and “the most trusted shingle brand in North America” for Timberline, are GAF’s marketing statements. We could not find an independent public dataset that confirms or refutes them, so treat them as claims.

The current GAF shingle lineup (October 2026)

GAF lists 12 residential asphalt shingle lines in October 2026: one 3-tab (Royal Sovereign), five Timberline architectural lines and six Lifetime Designer lines, plus the Timberline Solar ES 2 energy shingle. The table maps each line’s impact rating, wind coverage, algae warranty and GAF’s own relative price tier from its product comparison tables.

Source: GAF product pages and comparison tables, gaf.com shingle catalog, GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty RESWT160L-0426 and GAF residential warranty comparison guide, all read October 2026. Price tiers are GAF’s relative symbols, not prices. Ratings are GAF-hosted reviews.

What every GAF line shares, and what changes

All 12 asphalt lines list a UL 790 Class A fire rating, ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H wind classifications, State of Florida approval and a Texas Department of Insurance listing on GAF’s spec tabs. GAF’s footnotes limit Miami-Dade approval to some plants for certain lines. What changes between lines is impact rating, algae term, wind warranty path and look.

The four LayerLock shingles (HDZ, HDZ RS, UHDZ and AS II) are the only ones that reach 130 mph coverage with 4 nails and qualify for WindProven. Timberline NS and the Designer lines need 6 nails per shingle plus GAF starter strips for 130 mph. Royal Sovereign tops out at 60 mph of wind coverage for 5 years, even though it passes the same lab wind classes.

Lines you may still see on older quotes

Grand Canyon no longer has a product page: the old gaf.com URL now opens the general shingle catalog, and the August 2026 GAF Full Line Reference Guide (RESGN100-0826) does not list it. Marquis WeatherMax still appears in the April 2026 warranty document (30-year term, 80 mph wind) but not in the online catalog or the Full Line Guide. The original Camelot was replaced by Camelot II.

Impact ratings versus hail coverage

A UL 2218 Class 4 rating means a shingle sample passed GAF’s cited lab test with the largest steel ball, not that GAF pays for hail damage. GAF’s product pages state that GAF “makes no express or implied warranty about the impact performance of this product against hail” and that hail damage is not covered. Hail claims go to your homeowners insurer.

The practical value of Class 4 is insurance. Some insurers offer premium credits for Class 4 roofs in hail states, and GAF notes that “insurance discounts may not be available in your area.” Ask your insurer for the credit in writing before paying the premium for UHDZ, AS II or a Designer line, and keep the package label, since UHDZ’s Class 4 claim applies only to bundles carrying the UltraMat and Class 4 statement.

The GAF warranty ladder, from base to President’s Club

GAF stacks six residential warranties on Timberline shingles. The base Shingle & Accessory warranty comes with any purchase. Each step up adds GAF accessories, a higher contractor certification, or both, and in return lengthens the non-prorated period or adds tear-off, disposal and workmanship (misapplication) coverage. The table reflects GAF’s online comparison guide for Timberline shingles in October 2026.

Warranty Who can offer it Product requirement Non-prorated period Tear-off and disposal Workmanship coverage Registration
Shingle & Accessory Anyone; comes with the product None 10 years (Royal Sovereign: 5) Not covered None Not required; keep proof of purchase
GAF Roofing System Any installer Timberline shingles plus at least 3 qualifying GAF accessories 10 years Not covered None Not required
System Plus GAF Certified, Certified Plus or Master Elite Timberline plus at least 3 accessories 50 years Covered when necessary None Contractor registers
Silver Pledge GAF Certified Plus or Master Elite Any Timberline plus at least 4 accessories 50 years Covered when necessary 10 years (NS, HDZ, HDZ RS); 15 years (AS II, UHDZ) Contractor registers
Golden Pledge GAF Master Elite only Any Timberline except NS, plus at least 5 accessories 50 years Covered when necessary Lifetime, with 25 years non-prorated (HDZ, HDZ RS) or 30 years (AS II, UHDZ) Contractor registers
President’s Club Current 3-Star President’s Club Master Elite contractor Timberline UHDZ or AS II (or a Designer line) plus 5 accessories 50 years Covered when necessary Lifetime, with 40 years non-prorated Contractor registers

Source: GAF residential roof warranty comparison guide (gaf.com, read October 2026); GAF Golden Pledge and President’s Club legal samples RESWT161L-0426 and RESWT219L-0426. For Designer shingles, GAF lists 15 years (Silver Pledge) and 30 years non-prorated (Golden Pledge) workmanship.

Qualifying accessories are GAF ridge cap shingles, starter strips, leak barrier, roof deck protection and attic ventilation, per GAF’s warranty footnotes. The Golden Pledge sample adds two details most summaries skip: your Master Elite contractor must fix application errors found in the first two years, and the warranty does not take effect until it is registered and the contractor has been paid in full.

The April 2026 Golden Pledge legal sample we read does not describe a GAF roof inspection, which older Golden Pledge write-ups often mention. If a contractor promises a GAF inspection, ask where it appears in writing. For a cross-brand view of these tiers, see the Roofing Warranty Comparison Database.

What “Lifetime” is worth at claim time

GAF’s Lifetime warranty pays in full only during the non-prorated period. On the base warranty, after year 10 GAF stops covering labor and reduces replacement material by months used divided by 600, through year 40; from year 41 GAF pays 20%. GAF’s own example: a claim at 25 years is reduced by 300/600, or 50%. Enhanced warranties keep full coverage for 50 years.

Claim in year Base or Roofing System warranty (Timberline) System Plus, Silver or Golden Pledge
8 Full: replacement shingles plus reasonable labor Full, plus tear-off and disposal when necessary
15 70% of replacement material cost, no labor (180/600 used) Full
25 50% of material, no labor (GAF’s example) Full
35 30% of material, no labor (420/600 used) Full
45 20% of material, no labor Full
55 20% of material, no labor 20% contribution after year 50

Source: Roofing Brief arithmetic using the proration formula in GAF’s residential warranty FAQ and legal samples RESWT160L-0426 and RESWT161L-0426. “Lifetime” applies only to individual owners of single-family detached homes; other owners get 40 years.

How GAF warranty transfers work

The GAF warranties we read (base, Golden Pledge and President’s Club) can each be transferred once. The second owner must notify GAF in writing within one year of buying the property. On the base warranty, the buyer keeps full coverage only if the transfer happens during the 10-year Smart Choice period; on Golden Pledge and President’s Club, within the first 20 years. Later transfers shrink coverage to two years, materials only.

GAF’s warranty page says to email ccp@gaf.com with your name, address and purchase date, plus a copy of the deed or other proof of the transfer date. Sellers can help a sale by handing buyers the registered warranty document; buyers should ask for it at closing rather than after the one-year window has passed.

Wind and algae warranty details

GAF wind coverage lasts 15 years on Lifetime shingles. Coverage is 110 mph as installed, 130 mph with GAF’s special installation, and unlimited under WindProven when LayerLock shingles go on with GAF starter strips, ridge caps, roof deck protection, and a leak barrier or attic ventilation. WindProven covers the shingles only, and pays to replace blow-offs and hand-seal unsealed shingles.

Algae coverage runs 10 years for StainGuard (1 year non-prorated), 25 years for StainGuard Plus and 30 years for StainGuard Plus PRO (10 years non-prorated each), per GAF’s warranty FAQ. GAF says enhanced warranties may extend the algae non-prorated period to 15 years. The remedy is commercial cleaning or, at GAF’s option, replacing the discolored shingles.

What no GAF shingle warranty covers

GAF’s limited warranties cover manufacturing defects, plus misapplication only under Silver or Golden Pledge. The legal samples exclude damage from inadequate ventilation, hail, fire, wind above the covered speed, foot traffic and blown debris, settlement of the building, failure to hand-seal shingles installed in cold weather, and interior damage including mold. These exclusions explain most disputed claims.

GAF contractor certification tiers

GAF certifies residential roofers at three levels: GAF Certified, Certified Plus and Master Elite. All three require a state license where one is required, $1 million in liability insurance and workers’ compensation, per GAF’s Residential Program Guidelines (updated March 2, 2026). The tier decides which enhanced warranty the contractor can register for you, so it matters more than the badge.

Tier Warranties it can offer Extra requirements GAF lists GAF’s approved claim
GAF Certified System Plus License where required, $1M liability, workers’ comp “Only 7% of roofers in North America are invited”
GAF Certified Plus System Plus, Silver Pledge Same baseline “Only a select group of roofers”
GAF Master Elite All, including Golden Pledge Since Jan 1, 2025, yearly minimums: 1,000 rewards squares, 500 Silver or Golden Pledge warranty squares, 10 learning credits “Only 2% of roofers in North America are invited”
President’s Club (award) President’s Club warranty (3-Star winners) Awarded to Master Elite contractors Not stated in the guidelines

Source: GAF Residential Program Guidelines, last updated 3/2/2026; GAF residential warranty comparison guide. Percentages are statements GAF allows contractors to make, not independent counts.

How GAF trains new entrants and certified crews is covered in our guide to the GAF Roofing Academy and CARE training.

GAF also requires contractors to disclose that they are not GAF employees or agents, that GAF does not supervise them, and that they may receive loyalty rewards and marketing discounts for offering GAF enhanced warranties, which require a minimum amount of GAF product. That is a normal manufacturer program, but it explains why a certified roofer may steer you toward an all-GAF system.

How to check a GAF roof quote before you sign

  1. Verify the certification. Look the company up on GAF’s contractor locator or certification check page and match the tier to the warranty named in the bid.
  2. Get the warranty by name. The bid should say System Plus, Silver Pledge or Golden Pledge, not just “lifetime warranty.”
  3. Count the accessories. Confirm the shingle line and the number of GAF accessories meet that warranty’s minimum (3, 4 or 5).
  4. Put ventilation in writing. Inadequate ventilation voids coverage, so ask for intake and exhaust calculations.
  5. Confirm nailing. For 130 mph coverage, the bid should specify 4 nails on LayerLock shingles or 6 on others, plus GAF starter at eaves and rakes.
  6. Track registration. GAF says to call 1-877-423-7663 if you have no warranty copy within 60 days of completion.
  7. Pay in full and file the paperwork. Golden Pledge does not take effect until the contractor is paid; keep the warranty with your home records for any future transfer.

GAF complaints, BBB record and lawsuits: what the record shows

GAF’s independent record has three parts: a BBB profile with an A+ rating and 111 complaints in three years, a set of Timberline class settlements approved by a federal court in 2015, and a 2023 CPSC recall limited to first-generation Timberline Solar energy shingles. We found no CPSC recall of GAF asphalt shingles. Each item below is reported only as the record states it.

BBB profile

The BBB profile for GAF in Parsippany, New Jersey showed an A+ rating, “Not BBB Accredited,” 111 complaints filed in the last three years and 14 customer reviews when we viewed it on October 11, 2026. BBB letter grades reflect BBB’s assessment of how a business handles complaints and other factors, not a test of shingle quality. Read individual complaints and GAF’s responses on BBB before drawing conclusions.

The Timberline class action (MDL 2283)

Federal court records show suits consolidated in 2011 as In re: Building Materials Corporation of America Asphalt Roofing Shingle Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2283, in the District of South Carolina. Plaintiffs alleged that Timberline shingles made from 1998 to 2009 at GAF plants other than Mobile, and from 1999 to 2007 at the Mobile, Alabama plant, could prematurely crack, split or tear.

Judge J. Michelle Childs signed final orders and judgments approving the Mobile and Non-Mobile class settlements on April 22, 2015. A settlement is not a court finding that the shingles were defective. If you own a roof with Timberline shingles from those years, the settlement terms, not the current warranty, governed cracking claims; check the settlement documents on the court docket for what applied.

The Timberline Solar recall (2023)

On July 27, 2023, the CPSC posted a GAF Energy recall alert for about 2,100 Timberline Solar TLS-1 energy shingles and jumper modules, because “the electrical components in the solar energy shingles can malfunction, posing a fire hazard.” GAF Energy reported one fire and five thermal incidents, with no injuries. The remedy was free replacement of jumper modules and repair of affected components.

The current product is the second-generation Timberline Solar ES 2, rated at 57 watts per energy shingle by GAF. Note that the federal 25D credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025 (Public Law 119-21), so a homeowner-owned solar roof installed in 2026 no longer qualifies. Check current IRS guidance and a tax professional. Our solar shingle cost and adoption report covers pricing.

Where GAF owners most often run into trouble

Reading the warranty text against the record, disputes cluster where coverage stops: hail and storm damage (excluded), ventilation and installation problems (covered only under Silver or Golden Pledge), unregistered enhanced warranties, late transfers, and color mismatch on repairs, which GAF warns may not be exact. A roofing contractor’s review ranking in the current top results, from Linta Roofing, lists warranty misunderstandings, wind damage in severe weather and color variation as the main HDZ problems.

What GAF shingles cost installed

GAF does not publish prices, only relative tiers. Using The Roofing Brief’s 2026 roofing cost report baselines, a typical 2,000 square foot GAF roof runs about $8,000 to $12,000 in Royal Sovereign, $10,000 to $16,000 in Timberline NS or HDZ, and $16,000 to $26,000 in a Class 4 or Designer line. Enhanced warranty fees, if any, vary by contractor.

GAF line Cost category used Installed cost per sq ft 2,000 sq ft roof
Royal Sovereign 3-tab asphalt $4 to $6 $8,000 to $12,000
Timberline NS, HDZ, HDZ RS Architectural asphalt $5 to $8 $10,000 to $16,000
Timberline UHDZ, AS II Class 4 impact shingle $8 to $13 $16,000 to $26,000
Camelot II, Slateline, Woodland, Grand Sequoia family Premium designer asphalt $8 to $12 $16,000 to $24,000

Source: Roofing Brief estimate: roof area times the national ranges in The Roofing Brief 2026 Roofing Cost Report. Local labor, tear-off layers, pitch and decking repairs can move a bid well outside these ranges.

Which GAF shingle should you pick?

Match the line to your main risk and budget, then confirm which warranty your contractor can register. For most single-family homes, Timberline HDZ is the default; step up to UHDZ or AS II where hail drives insurance pricing, and to a Designer line only for appearance. The table maps common situations to the GAF line the documents support.

Your situation GAF line to shortlist Why
Most homes, mid budget Timberline HDZ Class 3, LayerLock, WindProven eligible, 25-year algae term, $$ tier
Tight budget, plain look Timberline NS Lifetime warranty at the $ tier; no impact rating, 10-year algae term, 6 nails for 130 mph
Repairing an old 3-tab roof or a shed Royal Sovereign Only GAF 3-tab; 25-year warranty and 60 mph wind coverage
Hail state, insurer gives a Class 4 credit Timberline UHDZ or AS II Class 4 plus LayerLock; Golden Pledge workmanship runs 30 years non-prorated
California cool-roof rules Timberline HDZ RS or Grand Sequoia RS GAF lists all colors as usable for Title 24 cool roof compliance
Slate or shake look Camelot II, Slateline, Woodland, Grand Sequoia Class 4 Designer lines; 6 nails and starter for 130 mph

GAF shingles pros and cons

GAF’s strengths are breadth and warranty depth: a line for every budget and look, Class 4 options in both Timberline and Designer families, and published workmanship terms that reach 40 years non-prorated under President’s Club. Its weaknesses are conditions: the best coverage depends on contractor tier, accessory counts and registration, and the base warranty prorates materials-only after year 10.

Pros Cons
12 asphalt lines from 3-tab to Designer, all Class A fire rated Base warranty covers labor only for the first 10 years
WindProven: no maximum wind speed on LayerLock shingles with 4 accessories 130 mph needs special installation; WindProven needs specific GAF accessories
Class 4 options at three price tiers No GAF warranty covers hail, even on Class 4 lines
Golden Pledge and President’s Club add 25 to 40 years of non-prorated workmanship coverage Those tiers require Master Elite or 3-Star President’s Club contractors and registration
Wide availability through retailers and distributors Royal Sovereign wind coverage is 60 mph for 5 years
Up to 30-year algae warranty (UHDZ) Warranties transfer once, with a one-year notice deadline

GAF vs Owens Corning vs CertainTeed: the short version

The three biggest U.S. shingle brands are closer than their marketing suggests. All three sell Lifetime-warranty architectural shingles with a 10-year non-prorated period, and each reserves its strongest coverage for its top contractor tier. GAF stands out on wind (WindProven with no speed cap) and published workmanship terms; Owens Corning lists Duration at up to 160 mph.

Brand Flagship architectural line Wind headline Top warranty and who offers it
GAF Timberline HDZ 110 mph; 130 mph with special installation; no maximum under WindProven Golden Pledge (Master Elite); President’s Club (3-Star President’s Club Master Elite)
Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Up to 160 mph with OC components and starter on eaves and rakes Platinum Protection (Platinum contractors): lifetime workmanship, prorated after 25 years
CertainTeed Landmark Landmark family up to 160 mph under CertainTeed’s 2026 upgrade terms; Integrity Roof System no maximum SureStart PLUS 4-Star or 5-Star (ShingleMaster PRO and PREMIER contractors; PREMIER replaced SELECT ShingleMaster for 2026)

Frequently asked questions

Are GAF roofing shingles any good?

GAF shingles are mainstream, code-listed products: every current asphalt line carries a UL 790 Class A fire listing and ASTM D3161 Class F and D7158 Class H wind classifications on GAF product pages. Whether a GAF roof performs well depends more on the installer, ventilation and the warranty tier registered than on the logo. The strongest GAF coverage requires a Master Elite contractor and registration.

Which is better, GAF or Owens Corning shingles?

Neither brand is better across the board. GAF Timberline HDZ offers WindProven coverage with no maximum wind speed when four qualifying accessories are installed. Owens Corning lists Duration at up to 160 mph with its components and starter. Both start with a 10-year non-prorated period. In many cases the contractor tier and registered warranty matter more than the brand.

What are the common complaints about GAF Timberline shingles?

The documented record centers on three areas: consolidated lawsuits alleging that Timberline shingles made from 1998 to 2009 could crack, split or tear (settled in 2015), warranty claims GAF treats as outside manufacturing defects, such as hail, ventilation or installation issues, and color or availability differences on repairs. BBB shows 111 complaints filed in three years.

Is there a recall on GAF shingles?

A search of the CPSC recall database in October 2026 returned no recall of GAF asphalt shingles. It did return one GAF Energy recall, dated July 27, 2023, covering about 2,100 first-generation Timberline Solar TLS-1 energy shingles and jumper modules over a fire hazard. GAF Energy offered free replacement of jumper modules and repairs.

What was the GAF shingle class action lawsuit about?

Federal court records in MDL No. 2283 (District of South Carolina) consolidated suits alleging that Timberline shingles made from 1998 to 2009, or 1999 to 2007 at the Mobile, Alabama plant, could prematurely crack, split or tear. Judge J. Michelle Childs signed final judgments approving the Mobile and Non-Mobile class settlements on April 22, 2015.

How long do GAF shingles last?

GAF does not publish a service-life figure. Lifetime is a warranty term meaning as long as the original individual owner of a single-family detached home owns it, with 40 years for other owners. Royal Sovereign carries a 25-year warranty. Real service life depends on ventilation, climate, slope and installation, which the warranty does not cover unless you hold Silver or Golden Pledge.

Who owns GAF, and where are GAF shingles made?

GAF is a Standard Industries company. GAF describes Standard Industries as a privately held industrial company headquartered in New York City. GAF says its asphalt shingles are made in the U.S.A. with domestic and imported materials, and that it has manufacturing operations and corporate offices in over 30 locations. GAF headquarters is in Parsippany, New Jersey.

Which brand of roof shingles is considered the best?

No independent body ranks shingle brands as best. GAF, Owens Corning and CertainTeed each sell Class A fire-rated architectural shingles with Lifetime limited warranties and 10-year non-prorated periods. Compare the specific line, its impact rating, the wind coverage you qualify for, and which certified contractor can register the strongest warranty on your home.
