Best Roofers in Pittsfield, MA: Why None Is Ranked, and Who We Verified

No Pittsfield roofer clears our certified ranking floor. The contractors we verified individually against local licence and manufacturer records, and the checks to run before you hire. No paid placement.

Best Roofers in Pittsfield, MA: Why None Is Ranked, and Who We Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026 no roofing contractor serving the Pittsfield metro qualifies for our certified ranking. GAF’s directory lists three certified firms with enough reviews: two are New York roofers whose published service areas name no Massachusetts town, one of them with no Massachusetts registration at all, and the third is a general contractor and home builder. So The Roofing Brief ranks none here. Instead this page lists four Berkshire County roofers we verified on both Massachusetts registers, each holding an active home improvement registration with no complaints and a construction supervisor licence.

The Roofing Brief searched the GAF certification registry across the principal cities of the Pittsfield, MA statistical area. No roofing contractor based inside the metro clears the evidence floor this ranking applies, which is manufacturer certification plus at least five independent customer reviews, so this page ranks nobody rather than pad a list. What it does instead is set out the contractors we could verify individually against the credential that actually exists here. Berkshire roofs are built for snow: Pittsfield’s code ground snow load is 50 psf and the northern hill towns’ is 60, half again eastern Massachusetts, ice barrier is mandatory statewide, and the winter mean at Pittsfield’s airport is below 25 degrees. The houses are old too, with 38 percent of the city’s built before 1940. Massachusetts requires two credentials and a permit for a reroof. None of the three certified firms in the directory meets our test for this metro, so none is ranked.

What a Pittsfield roof is up against

Massachusetts requires two credentials for most reroofs. The contractor must hold a Home Improvement Contractor registration to work on an owner-occupied home of one to four units, and the person supervising the work must hold an examined Construction Supervisor Licence, either unrestricted or in the roofing specialty class. A search of the state register in October 2026 found only 11 people with Berkshire County addresses holding the roofing specialty class, though many roofers hold the unrestricted licence instead.

Any home improvement contract over $1,000 must be in writing with the registration number, and the deposit may not exceed one third of the price or the cost of special-order materials. The state guaranty fund can pay up to $25,000 per claimant since November 2024, up from $10,000, but only against a registered contractor, and the contract must warn that homeowners who pull their own permits are excluded from the fund. Each registration record shows the firm’s complaint, arbitration and guaranty fund history.

A reroof is not on the residential code’s list of permit-exempt work, so every Pittsfield reroof needs a building permit, at $9 per $1,000 of the signed contract with a $45 minimum, about $135 on a $15,000 job, and the city wants a copy of the written contract first. The tenth edition of the state building code has been the only code in force since July 2025. Roofing torches need a separate $40 fire department permit.

Across 2016 to 2025 Berkshire County logged 273 thunderstorm wind reports, nine hail reports none above 1.5 inches, and one weak tornado, with $317,000 of recorded damage. Forecast zones add 32 winter storms, 17 heavy snow events, two ice storms and Tropical Storm Isaias. A 67 mph gust hit Pittsfield’s airport in March 2025. More than one home in nine in the county is a seasonal or second home, and 37.2 percent of Pittsfield’s homes are rented.

Berkshire roofers verified on both Massachusetts registers

No roofer qualifies for our certified ranking here, so none is ranked. These four are based in Berkshire County, hold an active home improvement registration with no complaints, guaranty fund claims or arbitration, and have a principal with a current construction supervisor licence. They are not scored and we are not recommending them.

Roof replacement and repair in Pittsfield, MA

Short answer: No roofer in Pittsfield meets our test for a certified ranking, so none is ranked. Berkshire firms verified on both state registers include Chris Battaini Roofing in Lee, Ryan Williams Roofing in Dalton, a metal roofing specialist, Klaus Roofing Systems by J Smegal in Lenox and Bartini Roofing in Lee. The rule that matters most: every Pittsfield reroof needs a building permit, and the job needs a registered contractor plus a licensed construction supervisor.

Berkshire roofs are built for snow. Pittsfield’s code ground snow load is 50 psf and the northern hill towns’ is 60, about half again eastern Massachusetts, and the December to February mean at Pittsfield’s airport is 24.7 degrees. The forecast zones logged 32 winter storms, 17 heavy snow events and two ice storms in the decade. Wind adds damage: Berkshire County logged 273 thunderstorm wind reports, and in October 2021 a storm near Dalton at about 90 mph stripped shingles and roofing panels, while a 67 mph gust hit Pittsfield’s airport in March 2025. Hail is minor, with nine reports and none above 1.5 inches.

The houses are old: 38.3 percent of Pittsfield’s homes were built before 1940 and the city’s median home dates from 1950. Older rafters were often sized for lighter loads than today’s code, so a heavy new roof or an added layer can matter. Massachusetts has no 25 percent roofing rule. The 10th Edition State Building Code, in force alone since 30 June 2025, keeps the IRC reroofing section, so a replacement tears off to the deck and a recover is not allowed over a water soaked or deteriorated roof, slate, clay, cement or asbestos cement tile, or two or more existing layers. Ice barrier underlayment is required statewide, and reroofing must meet the energy conservation requirements of Chapter 11.

Reroofing is not on the permit-exempt list, though ordinary repairs need no permit. Every Pittsfield reroof needs a building permit at $9 per $1,000 of the signed contract with a $45 minimum, about $135 on a $15,000 job, and the city wants a copy of the written contract first; roofing torches need a separate $40 fire department permit. Any home improvement contract over $1,000 must be in writing with the registration number, and the deposit may not exceed one third of the price or the cost of special-order materials. The guaranty fund pays up to $25,000 per claim, but only where a registered contractor, not the homeowner, pulled the permit. We found no Massachusetts matching requirement.

With no firm ranked, the four Berkshire roofers in our market list are verified alternatives rather than recommendations. Each holds an active home improvement registration with no complaints, guaranty fund claims or arbitration, and has a principal with a current construction supervisor licence. Chris Battaini Roofing in Lee holds a roofing class supervisor licence and Owens Corning Platinum Preferred status. Ryan Williams Roofing in Dalton is a metal roofing specialist whose registration term ends 19 October 2026, so confirm renewal. Klaus Roofing Systems by J Smegal in Lenox holds an unrestricted supervisor licence. Bartini Roofing in Lee holds roofing and siding classes but has no website or BBB profile we found.

The 273 wind reports that shape a Pittsfield roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Pittsfield, MA statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 9 hail reports, 273 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 1 tornado. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $317,000; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Pittsfield in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
6 September 2025 1.5 in Sheffield Berkshire
8 August 2019 1.0 in Maple Grove Berkshire
15 May 2018 1.0 in South Sandisfield Berkshire
16 July 2024 1.0 in Lenox Berkshire
29 March 2020 1.0 in Savoy Berkshire
30 June 2021 1.0 in Richmond Furnace Berkshire

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 6 September 2025 near Sheffield, measured at 1.5 inches. That is ping-pong-ball sized, enough to bruise asphalt shingles and shorten a roof’s life without necessarily looking dramatic from the ground.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 78 knots, about 90 mph, near Dalton on 16 October 2021. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 1 tornado touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF0 near New Boston on 2 August 2020.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 16 October 2021 event near Dalton, reproduced verbatim:

The National Weather Service in Albany, New York surveyed damage from the October 16, 2021 thunderstorm in and around Dalton, MA. There was sporadic damage in a southwest/northeast oriented path from just southeast of the center of Dalton to around two miles northeast of the center. The damage started at a lumber yard on West Housatonic Street where fiberglass sheathing and other debris was blown onto the roadway. Nearby, a large tree was downed on a fence near Chamberlain Park. Continuing northeastward, several large trees and limbs were downed on the grounds of Wahconah Country Club. The most concentrated damage occurred along Orchard Road and its intersections with Appletree Lane and…

That is the kind of damage a roof in this metro has to be specified against, described by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in July (78), August (44), May (41). The worst years on record were 2021 (46), 2022 (38), 2016 (37). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Pittsfield, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Pittsfield. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

Snow-load country, with some of the oldest roofs in the state

Massachusetts sets ground snow loads town by town. Pittsfield, Lanesborough, Lenox, Lee, Richmond, Hancock and Williamstown are at 50 psf; Dalton, Cheshire, Hinsdale, Peru, Becket, Adams, North Adams, Clarksburg and the other northern hill towns are at 60 psf. Amherst is 40 and towns in the east 35, so a roof framed to code in the northern Berkshires carries about half again the snow of eastern Massachusetts. Every Berkshire town also carries a 40 psf minimum for flat roofs on porches, additions and commercial blocks.

The cold is long. The December to February mean at Pittsfield’s airport is 24.7 degrees, about 11 degrees colder than central Virginia, and the Berkshire forecast zones logged 17 heavy snow events and 32 winter storms in the decade. In December 2024 Northern Berkshire averaged 10.4 inches in one storm, and in February 2025 a mixed storm added 7.7 inches of snow with a quarter inch of ice on top.

Ice barrier underlayment is required statewide, so every Pittsfield reroof must include it at the eaves, and every reroof goes through the Building Commissioner’s office for a permit. That is unusual among the metros we cover, where many cities exempt reroofs entirely.

The roofs carrying these loads are old: 38.3 percent of Pittsfield’s homes and 35.5 percent of the county’s were built before 1940, and the city’s median home dates from 1950. Older rafters were often sized for lighter loads than today’s code, and a heavy new roof or an added layer can matter.

Wind adds to it: in October 2021 a 90 mph storm near Dalton stripped shingles and roofing panels, and in March 2025 the airport gusted to 67 mph. For a Berkshire homeowner, ask the roofer who holds the construction supervisor licence for the job, confirm the home improvement registration is on the contract, and make sure the roofer, not you, pulls the permit.

The checks worth making in Pittsfield

Licensing is required in MA. Massachusetts requires two credentials for most roofing. Anyone contracting to alter or repair an owner-occupied home of one to four units must hold a Home Improvement Contractor registration with the Office of Consumer Affairs under M.G.L. c. 142A, and anyone supervising work regulated by the building code must hold an examined Construction Supervisor Licence under 780 CMR 110.R5, issued unrestricted or in specialty classes including roofing.

The supervisor licence requires three years of experience in the past ten and a passed exam; the HIC registration is a consumer-protection filing with no exam. Any home improvement contract over $1,000 must be in writing with the registration number, and the deposit may not exceed the greater of one third of the price or the cost of special-order materials. The Residential Contractor’s Guaranty Fund pays up to $25,000 per claim, raised from $10,000 on 20 November 2024, but only against registered contractors and only where the contractor, not the homeowner, pulled the permit.

Check here: Massachusetts HIC registration check. Check both registers: the HIC record shows complaints, arbitration and guaranty fund history, and the supervisor licence shows whether the person running your job passed the exam and in which class.

For what a full replacement costs across Massachusetts, including state labor rates and permit rules, see our Massachusetts roof replacement cost guide.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Pittsfield rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Pittsfield, MA pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 0 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.833. No contractor cleared the floor, so the alternatives listed above were instead researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Good and bad findings are published together, and no contractor paid for a place here.

Set aside in Pittsfield. Contractors that would otherwise have scored into the top no were removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.

  • All Conditions Roofing, which scored 82.7: Excluded on service area and registration. A Valatie, New York roofer whose website and BBB profile name only New York counties, and which holds no Massachusetts home improvement registration or construction supervisor licence, both required to reroof a Berkshire home.
  • AC Wood Contracting Inc, which scored 80.7: Excluded on core trade. A Lanesborough general contractor and home builder offering more than a dozen services from new homes to excavation, with roofing one line; BBB files it as a general contractor. Its website also still shows a company registration number that expired in 2022, though its owner holds a current registration in his own name.
  • Paragon Roofing LLC, which scored 67.8: Excluded on service area. A Ghent, New York roofer with an active Massachusetts registration and a clean record, but its published service area page and BBB profile name only New York places, and we found no construction supervisor licence for its principal.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Pittsfield roofing questions, answered

Who are the best roofers in Pittsfield, MA?

No Pittsfield roofer qualifies for our certified ranking, so The Roofing Brief ranks none. It verified four Berkshire County roofers on both Massachusetts registers instead: Chris Battaini Roofing, Ryan Williams Roofing, Klaus Roofing Systems by J Smegal and Bartini Roofing. In Massachusetts a reroof needs a building permit, a registered home improvement contractor and a licensed construction supervisor, and the state guaranty fund only pays if the contractor pulled the permit.

What is the 25% rule for roofing in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts has no 25 percent roofing rule. The 10th Edition State Building Code keeps the IRC reroofing section, so a replacement tears off down to the deck and a recover is not allowed over two or more existing layers. Reroofing is not on the permit-exempt list, though ordinary repairs need no permit.

Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Pittsfield?

Yes. Every Pittsfield reroof needs a building permit, at $9 per $1,000 of the signed contract with a $45 minimum, about $135 on a $15,000 job, and the city wants a copy of the written contract first. Make sure the roofer, not you, pulls the permit, because homeowners who pull their own permits are excluded from the state guaranty fund.

Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?

No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on every verified alternative listed.

What was the worst hailstorm in Pittsfield in the last ten years?

The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Pittsfield, MA statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 1.5 inches, reported near Sheffield on 6 September 2025. That is ping-pong-ball sized, enough to bruise asphalt shingles and shorten a roof’s life without necessarily looking dramatic from the ground. Across the decade the metro recorded 9 hail reports. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $317,000; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Pittsfield?

Severe-weather reports in the Pittsfield, MA statistical area cluster in July, August, May, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Scheduling discretionary work away from that window tends to get you a better crew and a faster start, because nobody is juggling emergency callouts.

Do roofers need a licence in MA?

Massachusetts requires two credentials for most roofing. Anyone contracting to alter or repair an owner-occupied home of one to four units must hold a Home Improvement Contractor registration with the Office of Consumer Affairs under M.G.L. c. 142A, and anyone supervising work regulated by the building code must hold an examined Construction Supervisor Licence under 780 CMR 110.R5, issued unrestricted or in specialty classes including roofing. The supervisor licence requires three years of experience in the past ten and a passed exam; the HIC registration is a consumer-protection filing with no exam. The Residential Contractor’s Guaranty Fund pays up to $25,000 per claim, raised from $10,000 on 20 November 2024, but only against registered contractors and only where the contractor, not the homeowner, pulled the permit.

What should I check before hiring a roofer in Pittsfield?

Check both registers: the HIC record shows complaints, arbitration and guaranty fund history, and the supervisor licence shows whether the person running your job passed the exam and in which class.

Snow-load country, with some of the oldest roofs in the state?

Is Pittsfield a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Berkshire roofs are built for snow: Pittsfield’s code ground snow load is 50 psf and the northern hill towns’ is 60, half again eastern Massachusetts, ice barrier is mandatory statewide, and the winter mean at Pittsfield’s airport is below 25 degrees. The houses are old too, with 38 percent of the city’s built before 1940. Massachusetts requires two credentials and a permit for a reroof. None of the three certified firms in the directory meets our test for this metro, so none is ranked.

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Pittsfield?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Pittsfield, MA statistical area logged 273 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 6 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.

Why is All Conditions Roofing not on this list?

Excluded on service area and registration. A Valatie, New York roofer whose website and BBB profile name only New York counties, and which holds no Massachusetts home improvement registration or construction supervisor licence, both required to reroof a Berkshire home..
