Ondura Roofing Review (2026): Specs, Prices, Wind and Warranty Fine Print

Ondura roofing reviewed from maker documents: Premium 9 vs 10 specs, 3:12 and 4:12 slope rules, 15-year warranty, Class C fire and Oct 2026 prices.

Ondura Roofing Review (2026): Specs, Prices, Wind and Warranty Fine Print

Ondura roofing is a corrugated asphalt-fiber panel, 79 inches long and 1/8 inch thick, that Onduline makes for sheds, coops, barns and other outbuildings, and that Palram Americas distributes in the US and Canada. The current Ondura Premium Series 10 panel weighs 14.4 lb, covers 17.7 sq ft net, needs a 3:12 slope on solid decking or 4:12 on purlins, and carries a 15-year warranty on Palram’s product pages.

This review is compiled from the maker’s own documents: the Ondura Premium 10 technical data sheet (May 2020), the Ondura Premium 9 installation instructions dated December 16, 2024, the Palram Tuftex and Ondura FAQ, and the 2003 ICC-ES Legacy Report 9649A. Where those documents disagree, both numbers are shown.

Ondura roofing key numbers at a glance

Seven figures answer most Ondura questions: panel size, weight, net coverage, minimum slope, support spacing, fastener count and warranty term. Each row below comes from an Onduline or Palram document, and the fire row comes from the only published fire test we could find, a 2003 ICC-ES report on the older 48-inch sheet.

Who makes Ondura roofing now?

Onduline, a French company, makes Ondura panels, and Palram Americas of Kutztown, Pennsylvania, is the exclusive Ondura distributor for the US and Canada, according to Onduline’s North America page. The 2024 instructions say “Exclusive distributor for the USA & Canada: tuftex-ondura.com”, and Palram’s brochure lists customer service at 800-777-7663.

Onduline itself belongs to Kingspan. Onduline announced that Kingspan signed on February 18, 2022 to buy the Ondura Group (Onduline, CB and Alwitra) for EUR 550 million, and Onduline North America’s LinkedIn page dates the change to September 27, 2022. The older Fredericksburg, Virginia address (4900 Ondura Drive) still appears on the 2020 data sheets.

What is Ondura roofing made of?

Ondura is a corrugated bitumen sheet reinforced with cellulosic fibers and thermosetting resin and colored with inorganic pigments, per the Onduline data sheets. The sheets meet EN 534:2010 Category S, contain more than 40% bitumen by the data sheet’s figure, and are made with about 50% recycled organic fibers according to the Palram FAQ.

The data sheets also list the lab results a buyer can compare: water absorption under 20%, tearing strength over 200 N, and a bending result of at least 1,400 Pa (about 29 psf) under downward load for the Premium 9 and 10 panels. The Edge panel is weaker on paper: 700 Pa (about 15 psf) and over 150 N tearing strength.

Ondura Premium 9 vs Premium 10 vs Edge: panel specs

Premium 10 is the panel most stores stock in 38 x 79 in, Premium 9 is the narrower 34.5 x 79 in panel, and Edge is a 35 x 79 in panel with 5 corrugations plus 4 flats. Every panel is 1/8 inch thick with a 1.5 in corrugation height and a 3.8 in corrugation pitch, according to the data sheets.

Home Depot sells a “35 in. x 79 in.” Ondura panel (models 1193 red, 1196 black, 1198 brown) whose listing copy refers to the Edge design, and the 35-inch width matches the Edge data sheet rather than the 34.5 in Premium 9. Check the label for corrugation count before you buy, because Edge cannot go on open purlins.

Where Onduline and Palram documents disagree

Seven Ondura numbers change depending on which maker document you read: wind rating, warranty term, support spacing, eave overhang, valley flashing width, ridge-cap screw distance and color list. The newest dated document is the December 16, 2024 installation guide, so this review follows it where a conflict exists and flags the rest.

Item Older or marketing figure Newest dated figure What to do
Wind “Wind resistant to 180 MPH” (2020 manual, Palram product pages, 2024 brochure) “Up to 160 MPH”, based on BBRI tests at 3,000 Pa on metal purlins and 4,000 Pa on wood purlins (Dec 2024 guide) Plan on the tested pressures, not the headline speed
Warranty “Lifetime Limited” (Palram FAQ, 2020 manual) “15-year warranty” (Palram Premium 9 and 10 pages); Home Depot lists “15 Year Limited Warranty” Ask Palram for the written warranty before you buy
Purlin or batten spacing 24 in o.c. recommended, 18 or 12 in for heavy snow, never 16 in (Palram FAQ); 18 in max (2020 data sheet) 19 in maximum batten spacing on 4:12 and steeper (Dec 2024 guide) Frame at 19 in or less; the FAQ’s 24 in exceeds the newest guide
Eave overhang 1 to 2.5 in (2020 manual); 2 3/4 in max (data sheet) 1 to 2 in (Dec 2024 guide); 2.5 in max (2024 brochure) Hold 1 to 2 in
Valley flashing 24 in metal flashing (Palram FAQ) 18 in minimum (Dec 2024 guide) 24 in satisfies both
Ridge-cap end to nearest screw 3 in max (2020 manual) 2.5 in max (Dec 2024 guide) Use 2.5 in
Colors Red, Brown, Green, Black (Premium 10 page and Dec 2024 guides) Red, Brown, Black (Premium 9 page; ridge caps and fasteners in the 2024 brochure) Green accessories may be harder to find

The 3,000 Pa and 4,000 Pa test pressures equal about 63 psf and 84 psf, and the Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) report numbers are DE 651XM223 CAR 15070/1 and 15070/2. The guide pairs them with 225 km/h and 260 km/h, which convert to about 140 mph and 162 mph, so the 160 mph figure applies to wood purlins.

Ondura wind and fire ratings

We found no current ICC-ES evaluation report or UL fire listing for the Ondura Premium Series from Onduline, Palram or the ICC-ES directory. The only code-agency document found is ICC-ES Legacy Report 9649A, re-issued July 1, 2003 for the older 48 x 78 7/8 in Ondura sheet, which reports Class C fire performance and a 30 psf design wind limit.

Rating Value Product and test Source
Fire Class C Older 48 in Ondura sheet, ASTM E108 (SwRI, 1995) ICC-ES 9649A
Fire districts Not allowed Older sheets and tiles ICC-ES 9649A section 9.4
Wind uplift, ultimate 60 psf Older sheet on 1/2 in plywood with No. 30 felt, FM 4470 ICC-ES 9649A
Wind uplift, design limit 30 psf Older sheet, every crown nailed 24 in o.c. ICC-ES 9649A section 9.5
Wind test pressure 3,000 Pa metal purlin; 4,000 Pa wood purlin Premium 9 and 10, BBRI Dec 2024 guides
Minimum slope (legacy) 3:12 Older sheet, solid deck only ICC-ES 9649A section 9.3

Fire class matters on sheds because 2021 IRC R902.1 requires Class A, B or C roofing “where the edge of the roof is less than 3 feet from a lot line”, and in jurisdictions designated by law. Class C may satisfy that minimum, but wildfire codes such as the 2025 California WUI Code often require Class A, and no Class A or B result exists in Ondura’s published documents.

Where Ondura roofing works and where it does not

Ondura is labeled for “auxiliary buildings” on its data sheets, and the December 2024 guide says Ondura products “are intended for use in outbuilding constructions.” That rules in sheds, coops, carports, playhouses and lean-tos, and it puts a house roof outside the maker’s stated use.

For a dwelling, the 2021 IRC lists accepted roof coverings in Section R905, and corrugated asphalt-fiber sheets are not one of them, so a house roof would need building-official approval as an alternative material under IRC R104.11. Small sheds are often exempt from permits: 2021 IRC R105.2 exempts one-story detached accessory structures up to 200 sq ft, though local amendments can change that line.

Ondura minimum slope and support rules

The December 2024 Ondura Premium 9 and 10 guides set three slope tiers: 4:12 and steeper may go on battens or purlins, 3:12 to just under 4:12 must go on continuous plywood or OSB, and 2:12 is allowed only on solid deck in areas with little or no snow, with doubled laps.

Roof slope Support required End lap Side lap Source
4:12 or steeper Plywood/OSB, or battens at 19 in maximum spacing 4 in 1 corrugation Dec 2024 guide
3:12 to under 4:12 Continuous plywood/OSB only 4 in 1 corrugation Dec 2024 guide
2:12 to under 3:12 Solid deck only; little or no snow 8 in (2 corrugations) 2 corrugations Dec 2024 guide
Under 2:12 Not covered by any Ondura document Not applicable Not applicable No Ondura document allows it; the Palram FAQ sets 3:12 as the floor
Heavy snow area Decking of 1/2 in minimum recommended Per slope row above Per slope row above Premium 10 data sheet

The Palram FAQ adds one framing rule the guide omits: do not use 16 in on-center supports, because that spacing “will not align correctly with the ONDURA corrugations.” For purlin sizes, spans and fastening, see our guide to roof purlin spacing and span tables.

How to install Ondura roofing panels

The Ondura install uses the four tools pictured in the 2024 guide (pencil, tape measure, utility knife and a drill fitted for the 1/4 in hex screw heads) and follows the steps below. Each measurement comes from the December 16, 2024 Premium 9 and 10 instructions unless another source is named.

  1. Confirm slope and support: 4:12 or steeper on battens at 19 in maximum, or 3:12 or steeper on solid plywood or OSB.
  2. Store panels covered and dry; the guide warns that stagnant rainwater between stacked panels damages them.
  3. Cut along a corrugation with a utility knife; cut across corrugations with a hand or circular saw, colored side down, using lubricating oil; Palram’s FAQ specifies a carbide-tipped blade for the 1/8 in panel.
  4. Dry-lay the first row along the eave, starting at the end opposite the prevailing wind, with a 1 to 2 in eave overhang and the panel aligned to the rake.
  5. Set eave closure strips under the panel, curved side up, exactly where fasteners will land; spray adhesive holds them in place.
  6. Drive the 3 in Onduline hex screws only through corrugation crowns, perpendicular to the roof, until the washer is snug without dimpling the panel.
  7. Fasten every corrugation on the first and last fastener rows, alternate corrugations on middle rows, and fasten every overlapping corrugation; budget 32 screws per Premium 10 panel.
  8. Lap the next panel by one corrugation along the eave and 4 in up the slope using the embossed guide lines; start the second row with a half panel cut lengthwise to stagger side laps.
  9. Finish rakes with metal flashing over or under the last corrugation, without screwing through flashing that sits underneath.
  10. After both slopes are covered, install 39.5 in ridge caps with 7 in overlaps, a 1/2 to 2 in end overhang, closure strips centered 1 in above the cap’s lower edge, and screws through every crown with the cap end no more than 2.5 in from the nearest screw.
  11. At valleys, lay at least 18 in wide metal flashing, seat caulked closure strips on it, and keep screws at least 12 in from the valley center.

Two maker warnings apply after the job: do not stand directly on the corrugations, and do not steam-clean or pressure-wash the panels. The Palram FAQ recommends cleaning with 1 part chlorine bleach to 10 parts water and repainting worn panels with exterior acrylic latex paint.

Ondura roofing nails and screws

Current Ondura guides call for Onduline 3 in hex-head screws with a 1/4 in head, sold 55 per box in red, brown and black, with what Palram’s brochure calls Sealsmart sealing washers. Older Ondura stock used 3 in ring-shank nails with EPDM washers; the 2003 ICC-ES report describes them as 0.135 in diameter galvanized nails with a 5/8 in washer.

A 3 in screw driven through a 1.5 in crown and a 1/8 in panel leaves about 1 3/8 in to pass through any old roofing and into the deck, which is why the guides do not call for longer screws on a single existing layer. Lowe’s lists an “Ondura #10 x 3-in” self-drilling screw in a 55-count box, and Home Depot still lists “Ondura 3 in. Red Nails with Washer”, 100 per box.

Can you put Ondura over shingles?

Yes, Ondura’s 2024 guides say Premium Series panels “can be installed over most existing Annex Building Roofs”, and retail listings repeat it: Home Depot says “Installs over existing shingle roofing” and Menards says “existing shingles or metal roofing”. The old roof counts as solid decking, so the 3:12 minimum slope applies instead of the 4:12 purlin rule.

Before roofing over, the existing deck has to hold screws: the legacy ICC-ES report required 1/2 in exterior plywood and 3/4 in fastener penetration into the deck. Soft or rotted sheathing under old shingles needs replacing first, and our shed roof repair guide covers patching versus replacing by material.

Ondura roofing prices at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Menards and Tractor Supply

Ondura Premium 10 panels (38 x 79 in) were listed at $33.29 to $49.99 each in retailer listings shown in Google Shopping and search results on October 19, 2026. That works out to about $1.88 to $2.82 per sq ft of net coverage, or about $188 to $282 per 100 sq ft before fasteners, ridge caps and closure strips.

Home Depot, Lowe’s and Menards shelf prices could not be retrieved on October 19, 2026, so check your local store; Menards lists red, brown and green Ondura Premium 38 x 79 in panels as SKUs 1153, 1158 and 1154. Lowe’s lists the ridge cap as “1.33-in x 3.29-in”, which matches the maker’s 16 x 39.5 in cap only if read as feet.

If a listing promises “over 26 Sq. Ft.” per sheet or 4.5 sheets per 100 sq ft, it describes the older 48 x 79 in Ondura sheet. A current 38 x 79 in Premium 10 panel has 20.8 sq ft gross and 17.7 sq ft net, per its data sheet.

Worked example: Ondura cost for a 10 x 12 ft shed

A 10 x 12 ft gable shed at 4:12 pitch with 6 in overhangs needs 10 Ondura Premium 10 panels and about $621 of panels and accessories at October 19, 2026 listed prices, a Roofing Brief estimate built from the maker’s estimating formulas. Accessories add about 68% to the panel cost on a roof this small.

Small gable garden shed roofed with brown corrugated asphalt-fiber panels and a matching ridge cap
At a 4:12 pitch with 6 inch overhangs, a 10 x 12 ft gable shed needs about 10 Premium 10 panels by the maker’s formula.
Step Input or formula Result
Slope length 5.5 ft run (5 ft plus 6 in overhang) x 1.054 (4:12 slope factor) 5.80 ft (69.6 in), one 79 in panel per slope, trimmed
Ridge length 12 ft plus two 6 in rake overhangs 13 ft (156 in)
Roof area 2 slopes x 5.80 ft x 13 ft 150.8 sq ft
Panels, maker formula 150.8 / 100 x 5.7, plus 10%, round up 10 panels
Panels, layout check 38 in first panel plus 34.2 in per added panel must reach 156 in 5 per slope, 10 total
Screws 10 panels x 32, plus 10% 352, so 7 boxes of 55
Ridge caps (156 in + 4 in) / 32.5 in, plus 10% 6 caps
Closure strips (2 x 156 in ridge + 312 in eaves) / 38 in strip, plus 10% 19 strips, so 5 packs of 4
Panel cost 10 x $36.99 (Tractor Supply) $369.90
Accessory cost 7 x $18.17 + 6 x $9.07 + 5 x $13.88 (EZ Outdoor Coverings) $251.01
Total materials Before tax and rake flashing $620.91, about $4.12 per sq ft of roof
Roof load 10 x 14.4 lb 144 lb of panels

The brochure’s alternative fastener range of 100 to 145 screws per 100 sq ft would give 151 to 219 screws (3 to 4 boxes) for the same roof. The per-panel count is used above because it follows the guide’s every-corrugation pattern on the first and last rows of a single-row roof.

Ondura vs metal and polycarbonate roofing panels

On panel price alone, 29-gauge steel was listed lower than Ondura on October 19, 2026: a 36 in x 8 ft Menards Pro-Rib panel at $32.25 and a 3.17 x 8 ft Union Corrugating Master Rib panel at $44.98 at Lowe’s, or about $1.34 to $1.87 per sq ft gross, against $1.60 to $2.40 per sq ft gross for Ondura Premium 10.

Palram’s FAQ says Tuftex PolyCarb Translucent White and Smoke both transmit about 45% of incident light, which is the reason to pick polycarbonate over Ondura on a greenhouse or patio. For plastic panel profiles and costs, see our polycarbonate roofing guide, and for steel and fiberglass sizes, our corrugated roof panel size and cost guide.

Ondura roofing reviews: what buyers report

Retailer and forum reviews of Ondura split along the lines the maker’s rules predict: easy handling and low weight on one side, leaks and crumbling around fasteners on the other. The rows below quote each source’s own summary; The Roofing Brief has not tested Ondura panels.

Source What it reports
Home Depot review summary, 35 x 79 in brown panel “Customers say the roofing panels are easy to install, lightweight, and durable”, citing carports and sheds
Lowe’s review summary, Ondura panels “Mixed reviews”, with some customers reporting “leaks, crumbling”
TractorByNet forum thread One barn owner reports about 5 years without problems; another reports “crumbling around the screws/nails” and at cuts

The fastener complaints line up with two maker rules: screws go only through crowns, and the washer must be snug without dimpling the 1/8 in panel. Walking on the corrugations, which the Ondura guide prohibits, is the other documented way to crack panels around fasteners.

What other Ondura guides say vs the maker’s documents

Six claims about Ondura on contractor and retail pages conflict with Onduline’s data sheets and Palram’s 15-year warranty pages, from house use to an eight-color range. Each claim found online sits beside the named maker document that answers it.

Is Ondura roofing right for your project?

Ondura fits a shed, coop, carport or lean-to with a 4:12 or steeper roof on 19 in battens, or a 3:12 roof on solid sheathing, where Class C fire performance is acceptable. It does not fit a dwelling, a roof under 2:12, or a site where code requires Class A or B roofing.

If your project is Then Why
A shed or coop at 4:12 or steeper on battens Ondura Premium 10 works Dec 2024 guide allows battens at 19 in maximum
A 3:12 to under 4:12 roof Use Ondura only over plywood or OSB Continuous deck required below 4:12

Lowest panel cost per sq ft 29-gauge steel panels $1.34 to $1.87 vs $1.60 to $2.40 per sq ft gross, Oct 19, 2026 listings

The 2:12 row’s extra panel count is a Roofing Brief estimate: an 8 in end lap instead of 4 in and a two-corrugation side lap shrink each Premium 10 panel’s net coverage from 17.7 sq ft to about 15.0 sq ft (30.4 in x 71 in), which needs about 18% more panels. For roof shapes and framing on small outbuildings, see our shed roof guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ondura roofing any good?

Ondura roofing is a reasonable fit for outbuildings when installed to the maker’s rules: 4:12 slope on 19 in battens or 3:12 on solid deck, 32 screws per Premium 10 panel, and no walking on corrugations. Its limits are a 15-year warranty on current Palram pages, a Class C fire result for the older sheet only, and an outbuilding-only use statement from Onduline.

What is Ondura roofing made of?

Ondura is a corrugated bitumen sheet reinforced with cellulosic fibers and thermosetting resin, colored with inorganic pigments, according to Onduline’s technical data sheets. The sheets contain more than 40% bitumen, meet EN 534:2010 Category S, and use about 50% recycled organic fibers according to the Palram FAQ. Each panel is 1/8 inch thick with 1.5 inch corrugations.

Can you put Ondura over shingles?

Yes. Onduline’s December 2024 guides say Ondura Premium panels can be installed over most existing outbuilding roofs, and the old roof then counts as solid decking, so the minimum slope is 3:12. The deck under the shingles must be sound enough to hold 3 inch screws, and rotted sheathing should be replaced first.

What is the average price for a 3 ft by 8 ft metal roof?

A single 3 ft by 8 ft 29-gauge steel roof panel was listed at $32.25 (Menards Pro-Rib, 36 in x 8 ft) to $44.98 (Union Corrugating at Lowe’s) on October 19, 2026, or about $1.34 to $1.87 per square foot. A 38 by 79 inch Ondura Premium 10 panel was listed at $33.29 to $49.99 the same day.

Which side of Ondura roofing goes up?

The colored face goes up, with the 79 inch length running from eave to ridge and the embossed guide lines used to set the 4 inch end lap. Onduline’s guide confirms the orientation by telling installers to cut across corrugations with the colored side down, which is the reverse of how the panel is laid on the roof.
