A cross gable roof is two or more gable roof sections that intersect at right angles, so the ridges run perpendicular to each other and meet over an L-shaped, T-shaped, or cruciform footprint. Each section still has the two sloping planes and triangular end wall of a standard gable, but where the sections cross, the sloping planes form valleys. Front-facing gable ends are often used as a design accent, framing an entry or a feature window. Cross gable roof valleys: the key leak risk
Valleys are where two roof planes meet at an inside corner and channel a large volume of water down a single line, which makes them the most leak-prone part of a cross gable roof. Every gallon that lands on both intersecting planes is funneled into that one channel, so any gap in the flashing or underlayment shows up as a leak fast. Correct valley construction, not the shingles, is what keeps a cross gable dry.
There are three common valley methods, and the right choice depends on climate, roof pitch, and the look you want.
- Open valley: a continuous metal liner (often painted steel, aluminum, or copper) runs down the valley and the shingles stop short of it on both sides. It sheds water and debris fastest and is the most durable, which is why it is preferred in snow and heavy-rain regions.
- Closed-cut valley: shingles from one plane run through the valley, then shingles from the other plane are cut in a clean line a couple of inches off the center. It is common on asphalt roofs and hides the metal, but relies on a wide underlayment membrane beneath.
- Woven valley: shingles from both planes are laced across the valley alternately. It is the least used today because it is slow, cannot be done with laminated or thick shingles, and traps debris.
Whatever method is used, a self-adhering ice-and-water membrane should run the full length of the valley under the flashing, typically 36 inches wide minimum, and wider in cold climates where ice dams form. The valley flashing detail matters more here than on any other part of the roof, and getting the metal profile, lap, and fastener placement right is what separates a valley that lasts the life of the shingles from one that leaks in a few seasons.
Where a cross gable wing ties into a taller wall rather than another roof plane, that junction needs step flashing and often a small cricket or saddle to divert water around the corner. A blocked or undersized valley can also overwhelm the gutter below it, so the valley and gutter transition should be sized for the concentrated flow, not treated like an ordinary eave.

The cross gable roof trades higher cost and more leak points for better fit on complex floor plans, more usable attic volume, and stronger curb appeal. Whether that trade is worth it depends on your house shape and budget: on an L-shaped or T-shaped plan it is often the natural choice, while on a simple rectangle it adds valleys you do not need.

The cons are almost all manageable with correct detailing rather than being flaws in the design itself. The one that cannot be engineered away is cost: more roof planes, more ridge, more flashing, and skilled valley work all add labor. Cost and maintenance of a cross gable roof
A cross gable roof costs more per square than a simple gable because the valleys, extra ridges, and complex framing add labor and waste, and it needs the same attention paid to those valleys over its life. There is no single price because it scales with how many intersections the design has and which valley method and materials you choose, but the cost drivers are predictable.
- Framing: valley rafters and jack rafters take more layout time than straight common rafters, and trussed cross gables need engineered valley sets.
- Flashing and membrane: each valley needs metal and a full-length ice-and-water strip, which a plain gable does not.
- Waste factor: cutting shingles into valleys raises material waste, often to 10 to 15 percent versus about 10 percent on a plain gable.
- Maintenance: valleys collect leaves and grit, so annual clearing and a look at the valley metal and gable-to-wall flashing prevent most cross gable leaks.
Inspect the valleys first after any storm, because that is where a cross gable fails before anywhere else. Keeping them clear and the flashing intact is cheaper than chasing a valley leak into the deck and framing below.
