Seamless Gutter Corners: Miters, Leaks, and How to Seal

Seamless gutter corners are the number one leak point on any gutter system, even on a run that has no other seams. A seamless gutter is extruded in one continuous piece for each straight run, but the corner where two runs meet is always a joint. That joint, called a miter, is where water from two directions concentrates and where a bad seal shows up first. This guide covers the three ways corners are made (box miter, strip miter, and hand miter), why they leak, and the exact order to seal one so it stops.

Why do seamless gutter corners leak when the rest of the run does not?

Corners leak because they are the only joint on a seamless run and because they carry concentrated flow from two directions at once. Every straight length is a single extruded piece with no seams, but two runs still have to be joined at each corner. That miter joint depends entirely on sealant and fasteners, not on a continuous piece of metal, so it fails long before the aluminum does.

Two forces attack the corner. Water sheeting off two roof planes funnels toward the same inside corner, so the volume there is higher than anywhere else on the run. And sealant has a shorter service life than the metal it seals, often 5 to 15 years against 20 to 40 years for aluminum, so the seam reopens while the gutter itself is still sound.

Poor pitch and clogs make it worse. If the run does not slope toward a downspout at roughly a quarter inch of drop per 10 feet, water stands in the corner instead of draining, and standing water finds any gap in the seal. Box miter vs strip miter vs hand miter: which corner type do you have?

There are three ways to build a gutter corner: a box miter (a pre-formed corner box), a strip miter (a bent metal strip riveted over a field-cut joint), and a hand miter (two runs cut and folded together with no separate corner piece). They differ in seam count, cost, and how often they leak. More seams means more places to fail, which is why the hand miter, with the fewest seams, is the most leak resistant.

Box miters stick out from the fascia line and are more visible, which is why they show up most on repairs and retrofits where a run cannot be recut. Inside corner vs outside corner: what is the difference?

An inside corner points back toward the house and collects water from two roof planes meeting in a valley, while an outside corner wraps around a projecting part of the house like a bay or a porch. Both use the same miter types, but inside corners see more concentrated flow because two roof slopes drain into them, so they leak more often and deserve the more careful seal.

When you buy corner pieces, they are sold specifically as inside or outside, and a strip miter for one will not fit the other. Confirm which you need before ordering, because the 90 degree bend faces opposite directions on each.

How do you seal a leaking gutter miter corner?

You seal a miter by cleaning the joint, drying it fully, and laying a continuous bead of gutter sealant along every seam from the top of the front lip to the top of the back lip, including the diagonal factory crimp. The most common mistake is sealing only the visible drip line and skipping the crimp or the back edge, so water finds the untouched section.

  1. Dry the corner completely. Sealant will not bond to a wet or damp surface. Do the work on a dry day and let the gutter sit dry for several hours first.
  2. Scrape out the old sealant. Remove failed caulk with a putty knife so the new bead bonds to metal, not to a cracked layer underneath.
  3. Clean with a solvent. Wipe the seam with mineral spirits or the cleaner the sealant maker specifies to lift dirt, oxidation, and residue.
  4. Seal every seam, not just the drip. Run a continuous bead along both overlap seams from the top of the front lip to the top of the back lip, and along the diagonal factory crimp at the front of the miter.
  5. Tool the bead. Press the sealant into the joint with a gloved finger or a tool so it fills the gap rather than sitting on top.
  6. Cure before rain. Give the sealant its full cure time, often 24 to 48 hours, before the corner sees water.

What sealant works best on gutter miter corners?

A polyurethane or tripolymer gutter sealant is the standard choice for miter corners because it stays flexible, bonds to aluminum, and tolerates constant water contact and temperature swings. Standard silicone caulk is a poor choice on gutters because most silicones do not bond well to bare aluminum and can peel. When should you replace the corner instead of resealing it?

Reseal when the metal is sound and only the caulk has failed. Replace the miter when the corner is cracked, corroded through, or has been resealed repeatedly and keeps leaking, because at that point the joint geometry or the metal itself is the problem, not the sealant. A corner that leaks again within a season of a clean reseal is telling you the miter needs to come out.
