  5. Match capacity to the load. Use the sizing table below to read off gutter width and downspout size and count for each section’s effective area at your rainfall intensity. If a section falls between rows, size up.

To sanity check flow, the standard conversion is: effective area in square feet, times rainfall in inches per hour, times 0.0104, equals gallons per minute the gutter must carry. A 1,100 square foot section at 5 inches per hour needs to move about 57 gallons per minute, which is why a single 2×3 downspout on a 5-inch gutter is often not enough there.
