RV Skylight Replacement: Sizes, Models, Sealants and Cost

By The Roofing Brief Team | Last reviewed: October 2026

An RV skylight is sized by its roof cutout, not its flange: a 14 x 22 in opening takes an ICON SL1422 dome ($94.99 to $127.99, ICON Direct, October 2026), set in butyl and capped with membrane-matched lap sealant.

Key takeaways

  • Buy by the hole, not the old dome. ICON lists the SL1422 for a 22 x 14 in opening with a 26 x 18 in outer flange and a 4 in dome (ICON Direct SL1422 listing, October 2026).
  • Flanges differ for the same cutout: the Specialty Recreation SL1422C flange is 17 1/2 x 25 1/2 in with a bubble of about 5 in (Camping World item 104569, $104.45, October 2026).
  • Roof thickness picks the inner dome: ICON’s 2 in deep SL1422 inner dome suits a roof at least 1 1/4 in thick, and the 5 in version suits a roof at least 4 in thick (ICON inner dome SL1422).
  • Dicor 501LS and 551LS lap sealants skin in 5 minutes, turn waterproof in 4 hours and reach 80% cure in 48 hours at 50 to 70°F (Dicor self-leveling lap sealant page).
  • Dicor states that its Ultra Sealant and Ultra Sealant Primer must not be used on stressed plastics, and that polycarbonate skylights take 501 or 551 lap sealant instead (Dicor Self-Leveling Ultra Sealant page).
  • A DIY 14 x 22 in dome swap costs $112.91 to $155.41 in parts at October 2026 retail prices in the worked tables below; a dealer adds labor at its posted shop rate.

What are the key RV skylight numbers?

Six numbers decide most RV skylight jobs: the cutout size, the flange size, the dome height, the roof thickness, the screw spec and the sealant cure clock. The values below come from ICON Technologies, Specialty Recreation and Dicor product pages opened in October 2026, and each row names the page it came from.

What size RV skylight do you need?

You need the skylight whose listed opening matches the hole cut in your roof, measured inside the frame with the old dome removed. ICON sells standard openings of 14 x 14, 22 x 14, 30 x 14, 22 x 22 and 36 x 18 in, and its SL1422B fits a slightly larger 22 1/2 x 14 1/2 in hole (ICON Direct, October 2026). Flange size only matters for covering the old screw holes.

The flange laps past the cutout on every side, so the wider it is, the more old screw holes it hides. An ICON SL1422 flange runs 2 in past each edge of a 22 x 14 in hole (26 minus 22 equals 4 in, split over two sides), while the Specialty Recreation SL1422C runs 1 3/4 in past each edge. Every old screw hole has to land under the new flange or be filled with sealant.

How to measure the cutout and roof thickness

Measure three things before ordering: the cutout width and length, the old flange, and the roof thickness at the opening edge. ICON’s inner dome and garnish listings accept openings as small as 21 1/2 x 13 1/2 in for its 22 x 14 in parts, so a hole that reads 21 3/4 in long still takes standard SL1422 parts (ICON Direct, October 2026).

  1. Remove the interior garnish ring screws and lower the garnish and any inner dome.
  2. Measure the hole edge to edge in both directions with a steel tape, to the nearest 1/8 in.
  3. Measure roof thickness from the ceiling panel face to the top of the roof membrane at the hole edge.
  4. Measure the old outer flange and note where the screw holes sit relative to the hole edge.
  5. Match the hole size to a listed opening in the table below, not to the old dome’s outside size.
ICON model Opening (in) Outer size (in) Dome height (in) Price, ICON Direct, Oct 2026
SL1414 14 x 14 18 x 18 4 $77.99 to $82.99
SL1422 22 x 14 26 x 18 4 $94.99 to $127.99
SL1422B 22 1/2 x 14 1/2 26 3/4 x 18 3/4 7 5/8 $129.99
SL1430 30 x 14 34 x 18 4 $129.99 to $134.99
SL2222 22 x 22 26 x 26 4 $139.99 to $149.99
SL1836 36 x 18 40 x 22 4 $229.99 to $234.99

A hole that matches nothing in the table is a custom job. ICON lists a custom dome service at $239.00 with a lead time of about 8 weeks from the day it receives your hole size, flange size and photos (ICON custom skylight dome page, October 2026).

Which RV skylight models fit a 14 x 22 opening?

At least five domes listed in October 2026 fit a 14 x 22 in cutout, priced from $61.95 to $184.11. ICON and Specialty Recreation sell polycarbonate domes; RecPro sells an acrylic dome. The kits that include an inner dome or sealant cost more but remove one or two separate purchases, as the table shows.

Listed prices for domes that fit a 14 x 22 in cutout, from RecPro, ICON Direct and Camping World, October 2026.

Shape and tint are the other choices. ICON lists its domes in square, rectangle, neo-angle and irregular shapes, in clear, white and smoke finishes, and rebuilds obsolete shapes through its custom service (ICON Direct skylights page, October 2026).

Material changes the cleaning and sealing rules, not just the price. RecPro’s RP-5050 listing says not to clean the acrylic dome with acetone or acetone-based products, and Dicor’s Ultra Sealant page bars that product from polycarbonate skylights. For the wider acrylic versus polycarbonate trade-off on residential domes, our plastic skylights comparison covers impact and yellowing.

One listing conflict is worth checking before you order. The Nomadic Supply listing for the ICON SL1422 describes a dual-pane, UV-stabilized acrylic dome, while ICON Direct describes the same SL1422 as impact-resistant polycarbonate; we use the maker’s own description in the tables above.

What inner dome and garnish ring does your roof thickness need?

The inner dome and garnish ring must span the roof cavity between the outer dome and the ceiling. ICON’s SL1422 inner dome comes 2 in deep for roofs at least 1 1/4 in thick or 5 in deep for roofs at least 4 in thick, and its garnish rings trim down from 4 3/4 in or 7 in to fit the gap (ICON Direct, October 2026).

Interior part (ICON SKU) Fits opening (in) Depth (in) Roof thickness rule Material Price, ICON Direct, Oct 2026
Inner dome SL1422 (12149) 22 x 14, down to 21 1/2 x 13 1/2 2 or 5 2 in depth: roof 1 1/4 in or more; 5 in depth: roof 4 in or more White ABS, clear center insert $133.63
Inner dome SL1422, 7 3/4 in (15944) 21 1/2 x 13 1/2 7 3/4 Deep ceiling cavities White polycarbonate $159.99
Garnish SL1422 (01936) 22 x 14, down to 21 1/2 x 13 1/2 Trimmable to 4 3/4 Roof gap up to 4 3/4 in Polar White $109.34
Garnish SL1422, 7 in (16002) 21 3/4 x 13 3/4 Trimmable to 7 Roof gap up to 7 in Polar White $119.34

ICON says the inner dome adds a layer of insulation and reduces condensation forming on the outer skylight (ICON inner dome SL1422 7 3/4 in listing). A shower skylight over a deep ceiling usually needs the 7 3/4 in inner dome or the 7 in garnish, so measure the cavity before buying either part.

Which sealant goes on an RV skylight for each roof membrane?

Under the flange, use butyl: Dicor BT-1834-1 tape (1/8 x 3/4 in x 30 ft) or a gunned butyl such as Dicor 451BSG-1 or ICON 12062. Over the flange edge and screw heads, use Dicor 501LS self-leveling on a flat roof or 551LS non-sag on a crowned or vertical edge; both list EPDM, TPO, PVC, fiberglass and aluminum as compatible (Dicor, October 2026).

Retail listings often pair any sealant with any dome (the Nomadic Supply SL1422 listing suggests both ICON butyl sealant and Sikaflex-715), but the data sheets add limits. Dicor’s Ultra page says “Do not prime polycarbonate plastic accessories, such as polycarbonate skylights,” and the Sikaflex-715 product data sheet (version 03.01, April 2023) tells users to test on original substrates before using it on materials prone to stress cracking. If you do not know your membrane, identify it first with our RV roof membrane guide.

The Dicor butyl seal tape page lists an application range of 30 to 110°F, says not to stretch the tape, and names the skylight frame as an application point. Dicor’s 451BSG-1 butyl sealant page gives coverage of 11 ft per tube at a 3/8 in bead and says to support joined surfaces for 8 hours minimum. Product-by-product chemistry for the rest of the roof is in our RV roof sealant guide.

How do you replace an RV skylight?

Replace an RV skylight in eight steps on a dry day near 50 to 70°F, the range Dicor’s cure figures assume: pull the interior trim, cut the old sealant, clean and probe the deck, confirm the measurements, lay butyl under the flange line, set and screw the dome, seal the flange and screw heads, then keep rain off for at least 4 hours, the waterproof time on Dicor’s lap sealant pages.

  1. Remove garnish, inner dome. From inside, back out the garnish ring screws and lower the garnish and inner dome. An ICON SL1422 garnish measures 24 x 16 in outside, so it hides the cut edge of a 22 x 14 in hole.
  2. Cut sealant, pull screws. On the roof, kneel on a board, never on the dome. Slice the old lap sealant with a plastic putty knife so the blade cannot cut EPDM or TPO, then count and remove every flange screw. ICON packs its No. 8 x 1 1/4 in screws 20 to a bag (SKU 15159, $11.51), so count your holes before ordering.
  3. Clean and probe the deck. Scrape off old butyl and sealant, then wipe with mineral spirits, the cleanup solvent Dicor names for its butyl tape. Press the deck around the hole: if the wood is soft, stop and repair it first using our RV roof repair guide.
  4. Measure cutout and roof. Confirm the hole size, roof thickness and old screw hole positions against the size and inner dome tables above.
  5. Butyl tape under flange. Lay one unstretched run of Dicor BT-1834-1 tape ($28.95, Nomadic Supply, October 2026) (1/8 x 3/4 in) where the new flange will sit, about 88 in for a 26 x 18 in ICON flange. If you use ICON 12062 instead, ICON’s listing says to run a thick bead around the opening.
  6. Set dome, drive screws. Center the dome so the flange laps evenly (2 in per side on an ICON SL1422). Drive screws with neoprene washers through the flange holes until snug; ICON’s sealant listing says not to overtighten.
  7. Lap sealant over flange. Run Dicor 501LS around the flange edge and loop it over each screw head, as ICON’s sealant instructions describe. Use 551LS where the bead sits on a crowned or vertical surface. Fill any unused old holes.
  8. Wait 4 h before rain. Keep water off for 4 hours, then reinstall the inner dome and garnish, trimming the garnish height to the roof gap.

How long does RV skylight sealant take to cure?

Dicor 501LS and 551LS lap sealants skin over in 5 minutes and are waterproof in 4 hours at 50 to 70°F, but they reach only 80% cure at 48 hours and 100% at 30 days. Dicor Ultra and Sikaflex-715 skin in 30 minutes, and Sika lists an application range of 41 to 104°F (maker pages, October 2026).

How much butyl and lap sealant does one skylight use?

One 14 x 22 in ICON dome needs about 88 in (7.3 ft) of sealant line under the flange and the same again on top. A 30 ft roll of Dicor BT-1834-1 covers four flanges, and a tube of Dicor 451BSG-1 at a 3/8 in bead (11 ft per Dicor) covers one with 3.7 ft to spare. The arithmetic is below.

Input Arithmetic Result
ICON SL1422 flange perimeter 2 x (26 + 18) in 88 in = 7.3 ft
Butyl tape, BT-1834-1 30 ft roll 30 ft / 7.3 ft 4 flanges per roll
Butyl sealant, 451BSG-1 at 3/8 in bead 11 ft per tube minus 7.3 ft 3.7 ft left after one flange
Lap sealant tube volume, 10.3 fl oz 10.3 x 1.805 cu in 18.6 cu in
3/8 in round bead cross-section 3.1416 x 0.1875 x 0.1875 in 0.110 sq in
Bead length per tube (geometry, no waste) 18.6 / 0.110 in 168 in = 14.0 ft, about 1.9 flange perimeters

The last two rows are our geometry, not a Dicor coverage figure, and they assume a round bead with zero waste. Looping sealant over 20 or more screw heads uses more material than a plain bead, so buy two tubes of 501LS for a first-time job at $10.50 each (Camping World item 32125, October 2026).

What does RV skylight replacement cost, DIY vs dealer?

A DIY replacement of a 14 x 22 in outer dome costs $112.91 to $155.41 in parts at October 2026 retail prices, depending on the dome. Adding ICON’s inner dome ($133.63) and garnish ($109.34) adds $242.97. A dealer charges the same parts plus labor at its posted shop rate, so ask for the rate and the book hours in writing.

DIY parts path Line items (retailer, Oct 2026) Total
Budget acrylic RecPro RP-5050 $61.95 + Dicor BT-1834-1 $28.95 (Nomadic Supply) + Dicor 501LSW-1 $10.50 (Camping World) + ICON screws $11.51 $112.91
ICON system ICON SL1422 $94.99 (lowest-priced color) + 2 x ICON sealant 12062 at $15.62 + ICON screws $11.51 (all ICON Direct) $137.74
Specialty Recreation SL1422C $104.45 (includes 1 sealant tube) + Dicor BT-1834-1 $28.95 + Dicor 501LSW-1 $10.50 + ICON screws $11.51 $155.41
Interior add-on ICON inner dome SL1422 $133.63 + ICON garnish SL1422 $109.34 $242.97

Dealer labor depends on two inputs only the shop can give you: its hourly rate and the hours it books for the job. The rows below are illustrative inputs, not quoted rates, applied to the $165.99 Camping World price for the ICON SL1422W with sealant and screws, to show how far each input moves the bill.

Illustrative labor input Labor Plus parts Dealer total
1.5 h at $125 per hour $187.50 $165.99 $353.49
2 h at $150 per hour $300.00 $165.99 $465.99
3 h at $200 per hour $600.00 $165.99 $765.99

Ask the dealer three questions before you sign: which sealant it uses on your membrane (Dicor lists 501LS and 551LS for EPDM, TPO and PVC), whether deck rot repair is billed separately, and whether the quote includes the inner dome and garnish. If the deck is soft over a wide area, price the job against our RV roof replacement cost guide instead.

Which RV skylight fix fits your situation?

Match the job to the hole, the roof cavity and the deck. A 22 x 14 in hole with sound wood takes a standard SL1422 swap; a 22 1/2 x 14 1/2 in hole takes the SL1422B; an odd size takes a custom dome at $239.00; soft wood means a deck repair first. The table gives the threshold for each call.

The same 14 x 14 in cutout that takes an ICON SL1414 dome is also the standard size for many powered roof fans, so a cracked dome can be swapped for a fan in the same hole; our RV roof vent comparison lists fan models by cutout. After any swap, add the skylight flange to the twice-yearly walk in our RV roof maintenance schedule.

How we compiled this

  • We compiled this page from 28 primary documents and dated listings opened in October 2026: ICON Technologies listings on ICON Direct, Specialty Recreation and ICON listings on Camping World, the RecPro product page, Dicor’s lap sealant, Ultra Sealant, butyl tape and butyl sealant pages, and the Sikaflex-715 product data sheet.
  • Prices are the listed prices on the day we opened each page in October 2026.
  • We did not test or install any product; the bead-length arithmetic is our geometry, labeled as such.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace an RV skylight?

In parts, a DIY swap of a 14 x 22 in outer dome costs $112.91 to $155.41 at October 2026 retail prices, from a RecPro RP-5050 acrylic dome to a Specialty Recreation SL1422C with Dicor BT-1834-1 butyl tape and Dicor 501LSW-1. Adding ICON’s inner dome ($133.63) and garnish ($109.34) adds $242.97. A dealer adds labor at its posted shop rate and booked hours.

Who makes the best RV skylights?

We do not rank makers, because none publishes comparable test data. The domes listed for a 14 x 22 in cutout in October 2026 come from ICON Technologies and Specialty Recreation in polycarbonate and from RecPro in acrylic. ICON lists a 26 x 18 in flange; Specialty Recreation lists a 17 1/2 x 25 1/2 in flange with a sealant tube included. Choose by cutout, flange and material.

What is the better alternative to skylights?

On an RV, the usual alternative is a powered roof fan in the same hole. A 14 x 14 in cutout, the opening of the ICON SL1414 dome, is the size every MaxxAir Maxxfan Deluxe is built for, and the 4-speed 00-05301K was listed at $237.95 (Nomadic Supply, October 2026). A fan trades daylight for airflow, and the swap reuses the same roof opening.

How do I replace an RV skylight?

Remove the interior garnish and inner dome, cut the old sealant with a plastic putty knife, pull the screws and lift the dome. Clean and probe the deck, confirm the cutout, and lay butyl tape under the flange line. Drive No. 8 x 1 1/4 in screws with neoprene washers, seal the flange edge and screw heads with Dicor 501LS, then keep rain off for 4 hours.

Are RV skylights a universal size?

No. The 14 x 22 in cutout is the standard rectangular size, but ICON alone lists openings of 14 x 14, 22 x 14, 22 1/2 x 14 1/2, 30 x 14, 22 x 22 and 36 x 18 in. Flanges also differ for the same hole: ICON uses 26 x 18 in and Specialty Recreation 17 1/2 x 25 1/2 in. Measure the hole with the old dome removed and buy to that number.

What is the best sealant for an RV skylight?

Use butyl under the flange and a lap sealant matched to the membrane on top. Dicor lists 501LS self-leveling and 551LS non-sag as compatible with EPDM, TPO, PVC, fiberglass and aluminum, and names them for polycarbonate. Dicor says its Ultra Sealant primer must not touch polycarbonate skylights, and Sika says to test Sikaflex-715 on plastics prone to stress cracking.

Do I need an inner dome on my RV skylight?

Not to keep water out, since the outer dome and sealant do that. ICON says its inner dome adds a layer of insulation and reduces condensation on the outer skylight. The ICON SL1422 inner dome costs $133.63 in a 2 in depth for roofs at least 1 1/4 in thick or a 5 in depth for roofs at least 4 in thick (ICON Direct, October 2026).

How long should RV skylight sealant dry before rain?

Dicor lists its 501LS and 551LS lap sealants as waterproof 4 hours after application at 50 to 70°F, with 80% cure at 48 hours and full cure at 30 days. Sikaflex-715 skins in 30 minutes at 73°F and 50% relative humidity. Sika’s data sheet notes that cure proceeds more slowly at low temperatures, so allow extra time below 50°F.
