A gutter parts diagram maps the nine components that move roof water from the shingle edge to the ground: the drip edge or gutter apron, the gutter trough, hangers, miters, end caps, the outlet, the downspout, elbows, and the splash block or extension. Water travels through them in that order. Name each part correctly and you can order the right piece, describe a problem to an installer, or spot which component failed when your gutters overflow.

Read a gutter parts diagram in the direction water flows. Rain leaves the roof at the drip edge, drops into the gutter trough, runs along the trough’s slope to the outlet, falls through the downspout, turns at the elbows, and exits at the base. Every other part exists to hold that path in place or seal it.
- Drip edge / gutter apron: metal flashing at the roof edge that directs runoff into the trough instead of behind it.
- Gutter (trough): the horizontal channel that catches and carries the water.
- Hangers / brackets: the fasteners that hold the trough to the fascia.
- Miters: the corner joints where two trough runs meet.
- End cap: the seal on the open end of a trough run.
- Outlet (drop): the hole and collar in the trough bottom that feeds the downspout.
- Downspout: the vertical pipe that carries water down the wall.
- Elbows: angled fittings that route the downspout around the eave and along the wall.
- Splash block / extension: the ground-level piece that pushes water away from the foundation.
Every gutter component, its size, and how it fails
Each part of a gutter system has a standard size range and a signature failure mode. The table names the component, its job, a typical dimension, and the symptom you see when that specific part is the problem. This is the reference most labeled infographics leave out.

The trough, hangers, and the fascia connection
The trough is the part most people mean when they say “gutter,” and it hangs from the fascia board on hangers spaced every 24 to 36 inches. On a K-style system the trough has a flat back and a decorative front that mimics crown molding. A half-round system is a simple U and needs brackets rather than internal hidden hangers.
Hanger spacing drives whether a run holds its slope. Wider spacing, or spikes that have worked loose, lets the front lip drop, which breaks the pitch toward the outlet and causes standing water. Hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia every two to three feet are the current standard for K-style aluminum. Outlets, downspouts, and elbows: the drainage path
The outlet is the single part that decides whether a gutter drains, because it is the hole in the trough bottom where water leaves for the downspout. A 2×3 inch outlet drains far less than a 3×4 inch one, so long roof runs and steep pitches usually need the larger drop and pipe. Undersized outlets are a frequent cause of overflow that looks like a clog.
Below the outlet, the downspout runs down the wall and turns on elbows. There are two elbow shapes: an A-style elbow bends front to back (away from the wall), and a B-style elbow bends side to side (along the wall). Installers combine both to route a pipe from the eave back to the wall and down. Miters and end caps: the sealed joints
Miters and end caps are the two sealed joints in any gutter run, and both leak first because they are seams rather than continuous metal. A miter joins two trough sections at a corner, either an inside miter (pointing into a valley) or an outside miter (wrapping around a building corner). An end cap closes off the far end of a run where there is no downspout.
Both rely on sealant, not just crimping, to stay watertight. Sealant at these joints breaks down over 5 to 10 years and is the usual source of a slow corner drip, so resealing miters and end caps is routine maintenance.
Drip edge vs gutter apron: the part people confuse
Drip edge and gutter apron are two different flashing pieces that people label the same on a diagram, and mixing them up causes real leaks. Drip edge is an L-shaped or T-shaped metal that runs along the roof edge under the shingles and is a roofing component. Gutter apron is a wider, steeper bend specifically shaped to carry water off the roof edge and into the trough.
On many homes the drip edge alone does not reach far enough over the trough, so water wicks behind the gutter and rots the fascia. A gutter apron fixes that overhang. K-style vs half-round: the parts that get different names
K-style and half-round gutters use the same nine core parts, but three of them get different names and shapes. The distinction matters when ordering, because a half-round end cap or hanger will not fit a K-style trough and the reverse is also true.
- Trough: K-style has a flat-back, crown-molding front; half-round is an open U.
- Hangers: K-style uses hidden hangers that clip inside; half-round uses external brackets or shanks.
- Outlets and elbows: half-round systems use round downspouts and round elbows, while K-style typically uses rectangular ones.
Match every replacement part to the profile you already have. Ordering a K-style outlet for a half-round trough is the most common parts mistake homeowners make.
