Do you need both a drip edge and a gutter apron?
On most homes you use both, just in different places. Drip edge goes on the rake edges and on any eave without a gutter. A gutter apron goes on the eaves where gutters are attached. You rarely need both on the same edge: the apron replaces the drip edge at the gutter line and does the same water-shedding job with a longer reach.
The exception is roofs already built with eave drip edge before gutters were hung. In that case installers sometimes add a gutter apron over the existing drip edge so the water clears the gutter’s back lip. Doubling up is cheap insurance where the original drip edge sits too high above the trough.
What size gutter apron do you need?
Gutter apron width is set by how far the metal has to reach from under the shingles to inside the gutter. A 3-inch apron suits a standard 5-inch K-style gutter hung tight to the fascia. How to install a gutter apron
Gutter apron installation means tucking the top leg under the shingles, nailing it to the deck, and lapping each section so water always runs onto, not under, the next piece. On a new roof it goes on before the first shingle course. On an existing roof you carefully lift the bottom shingles to slide it in, which is why retrofits are slower and often left to a roofer.
- Set up safely. Secure the ladder, wear fall protection on anything steep, and clear the eave.
- Measure and cut. Cut sections to length with tin snips, allowing for overlap at each joint.
- Lift the first shingle course. On a re-roof this is already open. On a retrofit, gently free the bottom shingles.
- Slide the top leg under the shingles. The horizontal leg sits on the deck, over any ice and water shield at the eave.
- Nail it off. Roofing nails every 12 to 18 inches along the top leg, into solid decking.
- Set the vertical leg into the gutter. Confirm the bottom leg hangs over the gutter’s back lip, not short of it.
- Overlap the next section by 2 inches. Lap in the direction of water flow so joints shed downhill.
- Seal the joints. A dab of roofing cement at laps and at corners keeps wind-driven rain out.
- Check the run. Sight down the eave for a straight line and confirm every section reaches the trough.
