Snow guards and heat cable are not competitors, they solve different roof problems. Snow guards hold snow and ice on the roof so it cannot avalanche onto people, gutters, or landscaping below. Heat cable melts drainage channels at the eaves so meltwater escapes instead of freezing into an ice dam. If your problem is sliding snow, you want snow guards. If your problem is ice dams and frozen gutters, you want heat cable. Buying the wrong one leaves the actual failure unaddressed.

What snow guards do (and do not do)
Snow guards are passive metal or polycarbonate devices that grip snow on the roof surface so it releases gradually as meltwater instead of sliding off in a sheet. They exist to prevent roof avalanches, which can crush gutters, damage decks and cars, and injure anyone standing near an eave. They are most common on smooth, slick surfaces like standing seam and other metal roofs where snow slides easily.
What snow guards do not do is prevent ice dams. By design they keep snow on the roof longer, and on a poorly insulated roof that retained snow can feed the freeze-thaw cycle that builds a dam. What heat cable does (and does not do)
Heat cable, also called heat tape or de-icing cable, is an electric resistance element run in a zigzag along the eaves and often through gutters and downspouts. It does not melt the whole roof. It keeps narrow channels open so meltwater has a path to drain before it refreezes at the cold edge and forms an ice dam. Self-regulating cable adjusts output to temperature, while constant-wattage cable puts out the same heat whenever it is powered.
What heat cable does not do is stop snow from sliding, and it does not fix the root cause of ice dams, which is heat escaping into the attic and warming the roof deck. Which should you choose?
Start with the failure you are actually seeing, not the product. Snow guards and heat cable address different symptoms, so the right choice depends on whether your problem is snow leaving the roof too fast or water refusing to leave at all. Work through these questions in order.
- Is snow avalanching off the roof? If sheets of snow slide onto walkways, gutters, a lower roof, or the driveway, that is a snow-retention problem. Snow guards are the direct fix, and they need no power.
- Are you getting ice dams or frozen gutters? If ice builds a ridge at the eave, backs water up under the shingles, or locks the gutters solid, that is a drainage and de-icing problem. Heat cable is the direct fix.
- Is the roof metal and steep? Slick metal sheds snow fast and often needs snow guards regardless. On metal, heat cable clips and routing also differ, so plan both around the panel profile.
- What does running cost matter? Heat cable adds a monthly electric bill during cold spells; snow guards cost nothing to run. If budget over time is a concern, weigh the recurring draw.
- Have you fixed the attic first? Ice dams often trace back to attic heat loss. In many cases air-sealing and insulation reduce or remove the need for heat cable, so address that before assuming cable is the answer.
If both problems are present, sliding snow and recurring ice dams, the two systems can be combined rather than chosen between. That combination is common on metal roofs in heavy-snow regions.
Can you use snow guards and heat cable together?
Yes, and on some roofs you should. A metal roof in a snowy climate may need snow guards to stop avalanches and heat cable to keep the eaves and gutters draining. When both are installed, route the heat cable so sliding snow held by the guards cannot crush or tear the element, and keep the cable clear of the guard clamps.
