What are H-clips for roofing?

An H-clip is a stamped aluminum or galvanized steel connector, roughly 1 inch wide, shaped like the letter H when viewed end-on. The two channels grip the top edge of one sheathing panel and the bottom edge of the next, tying the free edges together so they deflect as a unit under foot traffic and roof loads.

The clip does two jobs at once. It transfers load across the seam so one panel cannot drop below its neighbor, which prevents the ridged telegraphing you see through shingles over time. The center web of the clip also holds a consistent 1/8 inch gap, the expansion space wood structural panels need as they take on and shed moisture.

H-clips are only used on the panel edges that run perpendicular to the framing and fall in open space between rafters or trusses. Edges that sit directly on a rafter, and the panel ends that bear on framing, are already supported and get no clip.

Are H-clips required by code for roofing sheathing?

H-clips are required by code only when the roof sheathing panel spans farther than its rated capacity for an unsupported edge. The International Residential Code (IRC) sets allowable spans in Table R503.2.1.1(1) and calls for edge support under the edge-support provision (Section R803.2.3 in the 2018 and 2021 IRC). If your rafter spacing is greater than the panel’s listed span without edge support, you provide H-clips, tongue-and-groove edges, or solid blocking. If it is not, no edge support is required.

The number that governs is the span rating stamped on every sheet, printed as two numbers like 24/16 or 32/16. The first number is the maximum rafter spacing in inches for roof use. Two panels of the same 7/16 inch thickness can carry different span ratings, which is why thickness alone does not answer the question.

The most common mismatch is a 24/0 rated panel installed on rafters at 24 inches on center. That panel is allowed 24 inches only with edge support and just 20 inches without, so H-clips become mandatory. A 24/16 panel at the same 24 inch spacing needs no clips, because its unsupported-edge span already reaches 24 inches.

Two exceptions catch people. A low-slope roof below 2:12 pitch can trigger edge support at spans that a steeper roof would clear, because the panel carries a different load case. And some jurisdictions in high-wind or high-snow regions amend the IRC to require edge support more broadly, so the local code always wins over the base table.

H-clip size chart: matching the clip to panel thickness

H-clips are sized to the panel thickness, and the clip channel must match the sheathing it grips or it will either not seat or grip too loosely. Clips are sold by the nominal panel thickness they fit, and using the wrong size is a common field error that leaves the seam loose. Nominal and actual thickness differ for the thin sheets: a 1/2 inch panel usually measures 15/32 inch, and a 5/8 inch panel measures 19/32 inch. Clip packaging generally lists the nominal size, so a 1/2 inch clip fits a 15/32 inch panel. When in doubt, measure the panel edge with calipers and match the clip channel.

How many H-clips do you need per sheet?

Use one H-clip in each framing bay along every panel edge that falls between supports, centered between the two rafters or trusses. A standard 4 foot by 8 foot sheet laid with its long edge across framing at 24 inches on center crosses four bays, so its unsupported top edge takes about four clips, one per bay. At 16 inch spacing the same edge crosses six bays and takes six.

The count follows the framing, not a fixed number per sheet. Only the long horizontal seams between rows of panels need clips, because those are the edges left unsupported. The ends of each panel bear on a rafter and the edges that land on rafters are already backed, so they get nothing.

  • Rafters at 16 in o.c.: one clip per bay, roughly 6 clips along an 8 foot horizontal edge.
  • Rafters at 24 in o.c.: one clip per bay, roughly 4 clips along an 8 foot horizontal edge.
  • Estimating a whole roof: count the number of horizontal panel seams, multiply by the bays each seam crosses, and add 5 to 10 percent for waste and dropped clips.

How to install H-clips on roof sheathing

H-clips install as you lay each course of sheathing, snapping onto the top edge of the panel already fastened before the next panel drops in above it. The sequence is simple but order matters, because a clip cannot be added after both panels are nailed. Work up the roof one row at a time.

  1. Fasten the first row. Nail the bottom course of sheathing to the rafters with the panel long edge running across the framing, following the fastening schedule for the deck. See the IRC nailing pattern before you start.
  2. Slide a clip into each bay. Push one H-clip onto the exposed top edge of the fastened panel, centered between each pair of rafters, until the center web seats against the panel edge. The narrower channel typically faces up.
  3. Set the next panel. Lower the next row of sheathing so its bottom edge slides into the open upper channel of every clip at once. The clips align the two panels and hold the 1/8 inch gap automatically.
  4. Keep the end gap. Leave a 1/8 inch gap at the panel ends as well, using a spacing tool or a 10d nail shank, so the whole deck can expand without buckling.
  5. Nail off the new row. Fasten the new panel to the rafters, then repeat up the slope. Do not nail through or pinch the clip.

When to use blocking or tongue-and-groove instead

Blocking and tongue-and-groove panels are the two code-recognized alternatives to H-clips, and either satisfies the same edge-support requirement. Solid 2x blocking nailed between rafters under the seam gives continuous support and is often chosen on low-slope decks or where a solid nailing surface is wanted at the seam. Tongue-and-groove panels interlock along their long edges, so the joint is self-supporting and no clip or block is needed.

H-clips win on speed and cost for standard sloped roofs, since a single worker can clip an entire deck as it goes. Blocking adds labor and lumber but provides a firmer edge for heavy foot traffic. Tongue-and-groove costs more per sheet but removes the clip step entirely and is common on exposed decks and on subfloors.
