Best Roofers in Lafayette, IN: 3 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

The three best roofers in Lafayette, IN, ranked on a published formula and verified individually against BBB, licence and manufacturer records. No paid placement.

Best Roofers in Lafayette, IN: 3 Certified Contractors, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the three highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Knox Services (95.9), Loy-Quinn Roofing (67.0), Sullivan & Fortner Roofing (65.4). All of them carry a verifiable manufacturer certification, every rating here was cross-checked against an independent record, and no money changed hands for any placement.

The Roofing Brief scored 3 certified roofing contractors serving the Lafayette metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top three individually to confirm its record. Thirty miles west of Lafayette, Illinois examines and licenses every roofer. Indiana licenses none, and neither does the City of Lafayette, which licenses only electricians. So the protections that matter here are the state’s storm-contract statute and whatever a homeowner checks for themselves. Three manufacturer-certified firms clear our evidence floor, and two of them appear to share an owner: the firms sit at 580 and 680 North 36th Street, both claim a 1910 founding, and the same man is named as president of one and owner of the other. We rank all three and tell you about it, and we name five Owens Corning network firms in the metro so the list is not mistaken for the market.

The conditions a Lafayette, IN roof has to be specified for

The record here is scattered extremes rather than steady hail. Across 2016 to 2025 Benton, Carroll, Tippecanoe and Warren counties logged 152 thunderstorm wind reports against 32 hail reports, 23 of them at an inch or more and only 2 at two inches or more. But those two were large: a 4.00 inch stone at Montmorencie in northwestern Tippecanoe County on 27 May 2019, and 2.50 inches at Williamsport on 6 May 2023. The strongest wind of the decade was a 100 mph thunderstorm gust at Cairo in northern Tippecanoe County on 22 June 2016, followed nine minutes later by 87 mph at North Crane. May and June are the peak months for wind and April for hail.

Indiana issues no state roofing licence and no state general contractor licence; the Professional Licensing Agency’s list of regulated professions has no roofing or general contracting category. Locally, the City of Lafayette licenses electrical contractors only and requires general contractors on permitted work to post a $5,000 bond, and reroofing that does not require structural alteration is exempt from permits. West Lafayette requires a permit only for new construction, structural change or electrical work. Outside the two cities, the Tippecanoe County Building Commission issues permits for most of the county. In practice, a straightforward reroof here involves no licence and no permit.

What Indiana does have is a storm-contract statute that applies everywhere in the state. IC 24-5-11-10.5(a) bars a real property improvement supplier from advertising, offering or promising to pay or rebate any part of an insurance deductible. For contracts entered after 30 June 2017, IC 24-5-11-10.6 gives you the right to cancel before midnight on the third business day after the later of signing or receiving written notice from your insurer of a final coverage decision. The 2020 Indiana Residential Code assigns all four metro counties a 115 mph design wind speed and a 20 pound ground snow load, and it is filled in county by county for ice barriers: Tippecanoe and Warren are marked no, while Benton and Carroll are marked yes.

Purdue shapes the housing. Tippecanoe County is 46.6 percent renter-occupied, the City of Lafayette 53.3 percent and the City of West Lafayette 70.6 percent, against 17.6 to 20.2 percent in the rural counties. The age of the stock varies just as sharply: the median year built is 1992 in West Lafayette but 1971 in Lafayette, and 1954 in Benton County. A 1971 roof in a city where half the homes are rented has usually been through several coverings, and the question of who chose them is worth asking.

1. Knox Services — TRB Score 95.9

Knox Services is based in Lafayette, IN, led by C’Koh Andrew and Matt Deckard, Co-Owners, Not accredited; A+ rating, no complaints in three years, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.

Score component Points Max
Certification tier 35 35
Adjusted rating 35.9 40
Review corpus depth 15.0 15

Total 95.9 100

Independently corroborated:

  • Rated A+ though not accredited, with no complaints closed in three years and a business start of December 2011 for the current entity.. BBB business profile

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing, siding, seamless gutters, custom masonry.

Why it ranks here. The clear top score in the metro, on President’s Club certification and a 4.9 across 460 reviews, much the deepest consumer record here. It is Lafayette-based and the only one of the three ranked firms with no shared ownership to disclose.

Best fit for: A full replacement from the metro’s highest-rated certified firm.

What we would want clarified. Ownership changed in 2021: the company says it was founded in 1966 by Scott Knox and passed to co-owners C’Koh Andrew and Matt Deckard, while BBB dates the current business to December 2011, so the long history belongs to the name rather than to the present owners. It runs a second hub in Brownsburg serving the Indianapolis area, so ask which crew covers Lafayette. Indiana and Lafayette license no roofers, so there is no register number to check. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (765) 413-6226, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

2. Loy-Quinn Roofing — TRB Score 67.0

Loy-Quinn Roofing is based in Lafayette, IN, led by Miguel Gomes and Gary Quinn, both listed by BBB as President, Not accredited; A+ rating, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Score component Points Max
Certification tier 12 35
Adjusted rating 35.3 40
Review corpus depth 9.7 15
Metro proximity 10.0 10
Total 67.0 100

Independently corroborated:

  • Rated A+ though not accredited, listing Miguel Gomes and Gary Quinn as president.. BBB business profile

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing, siding, windows, gutters.

Why it ranks here. A 4.9 across 51 reviews from a Lafayette firm on the city’s east side, with a service area covering the metro.

Best fit for: A comparison quote, provided you understand its relationship to the firm below.

What we would want clarified. It appears to share ownership with Sullivan and Fortner Roofing, the next firm on this page. BBB names Miguel Gomes as president of Loy-Quinn, and Sullivan and Fortner’s own site names Miguel Gomez as its owner; the two firms sit at 680 and 580 North 36th Street, and both claim a 1910 founding. We could not confirm this on the Indiana Secretary of State’s records, so treat it as an apparent link rather than an established one, but do not count quotes from the two as independent. The 1910 claim itself is unverified, and so are the certification tier and reviews. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (765) 474-4543, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

3. Sullivan & Fortner Roofing — TRB Score 65.4

Sullivan & Fortner Roofing is based in Lafayette, IN, led by Miguel Gomez, owner per the company site; BBB still lists Paul O’Dell, Not accredited; A+ rating, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

Certifications held: Certified (GAF), Illinois roofing contractor licence 104017602, verified active, unusual for an Indiana firm. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

Score component Points Max
Certification tier 12 35
Adjusted rating 33.2 40
Review corpus depth 10.2 15
Metro proximity 10.0 10
Total 65.4 100

Independently corroborated:

  • SULLIVAN & FORTNER ROOFING LLC holds Illinois roofing contractor licence 104017602, active, first issued 17 May 2017, expiring 31 December 2027, never disciplined; the Illinois file gives Addison, IL as its city of record.. IDFPR Illinois roofing licence register
  • Rated A+ though not accredited, still listing Paul O’Dell as owner and an older address on Navco Drive.. BBB business profile

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing, siding, gutters, soffit and fascia, windows and doors, masonry.

Why it ranks here. A long-established Lafayette roofer and the only Indiana firm on this page holding an Illinois roofing licence, which required its qualifying party to pass the Illinois examination. In a state with no licence of its own, that is the only examined roofing credential any firm here can show.

Best fit for: Homeowners who want a firm that has passed an examined roofing licence, even if it is the neighbouring state’s.

What we would want clarified. Two ownership points. The company’s own site records a change from Paul O’Dell, owner from 1997, to Miguel Gomez, on a date it does not state, and BBB has not caught up. And it appears to share ownership with Loy-Quinn Roofing above, through the same owner name, neighbouring addresses and the same 1910 founding claim; we could not confirm it on Indiana’s corporate records. The Illinois licence gives an Addison, Illinois city of record, which we could not explain. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (765) 447-3155, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

Owens Corning network firms in the Lafayette metro

Three manufacturer-certified firms in our programme clear the evidence floor here, and two of them appear to share an owner. These five Lafayette-area firms sit in Owens Corning’s contractor network instead, verified on Owens Corning’s own locator. They are not scored and we are not recommending them; Indiana gives no licence to check, so the network listing and BBB record are the available evidence.

The 23 hail reports behind a Lafayette, IN roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 4 counties of the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 32 hail reports, 152 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 17 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $1.9 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Lafayette in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
27 May 2019 4.0 in Montmorencie Tippecanoe
6 May 2023 2.5 in Williamsport Warren
8 September 2020 1.75 in South Raub Tippecanoe
10 April 2017 1.75 in Elston Tippecanoe
10 April 2017 1.75 in Taylor Tippecanoe
26 May 2017 1.75 in Marshfield Warren

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 27 May 2019 near Montmorencie, measured at 4.0 inches. That is grapefruit sized. Stones that big destroy asphalt shingles outright, dent metal, crack tile and routinely total roofs across whole neighbourhoods.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 87 knots, about 100 mph, near Cairo on 22 June 2016. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 17 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Oxford on 31 March 2023.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 21 July 2020 event near Tippecanoe, reproduced verbatim:

Large metal doors were blown off of the Toyota Tsusho America Inc plant at the 5400 block of Haggerty Lane. A plant employee told local broadcast media that if not for the tornado warning and their resulting shelter in place employees would have been struck.

That is the kind of damage a roof in this metro has to be specified against, described by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in May (54), June (43), March (28). The worst years on record were 2019 (56), 2025 (30), 2020 (27). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Lafayette, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Lafayette. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

Memorial Day 2019 and the 100 mph gust: extreme, scattered and fast

The largest hailstone in the metro in ten years of NOAA records was a 4.00 inch stone at Montmorencie, in northwestern Tippecanoe County, at 7pm Eastern on 27 May 2019. The same cell produced a measured 72 mph gust at Montmorenci Airport two minutes earlier and a measured 70 mph gust at Otterbein, in Benton County, where utility poles were blown down. Earlier that evening in Benton County the line had dropped 1.75 inch hail at Oxford, produced a 71 mph gust at Swanington and damaged a large storage shed near Atkinson, with debris blown as far as 100 yards.

That stone is an outlier, and the point of telling you so is to set expectations rather than alarm. Only 2 of the 32 hail reports in the four counties over the decade reached two inches. But hail of that size does not need to be frequent to matter: a single afternoon can produce the claim of a decade on a few streets, which is how this market behaves.

Wind is the more frequent hazard and arrives faster than people expect. On the night of 22 June 2016 a thunderstorm produced a 100 mph gust at Cairo, in northern Tippecanoe County, and an 87 mph gust at North Crane nine minutes later. The 2020 Indiana Residential Code designs all four metro counties to 115 mph, so a measured 100 mph gust sits within about 13 percent of the design value. Fastening, starter course and edge detailing are what decide outcomes at those speeds.

Tornadoes add a rural risk to the north and west. On 31 March 2023 two EF2 tornadoes crossed Benton County on tracks of 10.57 and 11.53 miles. One, near Fowler, snapped a wind turbine tower about halfway up and threw blades as far as 600 yards, with winds estimated near 120 mph; the other, near Oxford, tore large portions of a roof and some siding off a home.

Because Indiana gives you no licence to check and Lafayette requires no permit for an ordinary reroof, the statute is your main protection after a storm. Refuse any offer to absorb your deductible, which IC 24-5-11-10.5 prohibits. Remember you have three business days to cancel after the later of signing or your insurer’s final decision under 10.6. And because nobody will inspect a non-structural reroof here, get the fastener type and pattern, the underlayment and the edge metal written into the contract, since in a market that has measured 100 mph those are the details that matter.

The checks worth making in Lafayette, IN

There is no state roofing licence in IN. Indiana issues no state roofing licence. The state licenses plumbing contractors and essentially nothing else in the building trades, so there is no state exam, no state licence number and no state board that can discipline a roofer.

Regulation is municipal. In Indianapolis the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services issues a general contractor licence covering roofing work throughout Marion County, though notably that licence does not extend to the excluded cities of Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway and Southport, which run their own requirements.

That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.

Check here: Indianapolis Business and Neighborhood Services contractor licensing. Indiana has no state roofing or general contractor licence, so licensing is entirely municipal and county level, and it varies sharply between neighbouring jurisdictions. Ask which city or county licence the contractor holds for the jurisdiction your house actually sits in, and confirm it with that building department rather than accepting a licence issued elsewhere in the state as proof.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Lafayette, IN rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 3 certified contractors, of whom 1 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.867. The top three were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Good and bad findings are published together, and no contractor paid for a place here.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Do roofers need a licence in IN?

Indiana issues no state roofing licence. The state licenses plumbing contractors and essentially nothing else in the building trades, so there is no state exam, no state licence number and no state board that can discipline a roofer. Regulation is municipal. In Indianapolis the Department of Business and Neighborhood Services issues a general contractor licence covering roofing work throughout Marion County, though notably that licence does not extend to the excluded cities of Lawrence, Beech Grove, Speedway and Southport, which run their own requirements.

What should I check before hiring a roofer in Lafayette?

Indiana has no state roofing or general contractor licence, so licensing is entirely municipal and county level, and it varies sharply between neighbouring jurisdictions. Ask which city or county licence the contractor holds for the jurisdiction your house actually sits in, and confirm it with that building department rather than accepting a licence issued elsewhere in the state as proof.

Memorial Day 2019 and the 100 mph gust: extreme, scattered and fast?

Is Lafayette a hard market to find a good roofer in?

Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Lafayette?

Wind, by a wide margin. The Lafayette-West Lafayette, IN statistical area logged 152 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 23 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
