Short answer: As of October 2026 no roofing contractor serving the Alexandria metro holds GAF certification with five or more customer reviews: GAF’s own directory returns no results for Alexandria. So The Roofing Brief ranks none here. Instead this page lists five roofers we verified individually on the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors register, each holding the residential roofing classification that the state has required on residential roofing jobs of $7,500 or more since 1 January 2026. The register shows only four businesses based in Rapides or Grant Parish holding that classification.
The Roofing Brief searched the GAF certification registry across the principal cities of the Alexandria, LA statistical area. No roofing contractor based inside the metro clears the evidence floor this ranking applies, which is manufacturer certification plus at least five independent customer reviews, so this page ranks nobody rather than pad a list. What it does instead is set out the contractors we could verify individually against the credential that actually exists here. Central Louisiana sits 150 miles from the Gulf and still took two hurricanes in six weeks in 2020: Laura’s gusts reached 105 mph across Rapides Parish and put the whole parish in the dark, and Delta followed with up to 20 inches of rain. Tornadoes are the recurring threat, including an EF3 that entered western Alexandria in December 2019. Louisiana now requires a residential roofing licence, but few local firms hold it, and no certified firm appears in the directory for Alexandria, so none is ranked.
Hail, codes and what they cost an Alexandria homeowner
Since 1 January 2026 anyone who bids, advertises or performs residential roofing work worth $7,500 or more in Louisiana must hold the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification from the State Licensing Board for Contractors, and new residential roofers must pass a trade exam. From 1 August 2026 the rule covers any residential building of up to four units, and residential licensees must carry at least $500,000 of liability insurance. On the register in October 2026 only four businesses based in Rapides or Grant Parish held Residential Roofing, so check the classification, not just a licence number.
Louisiana’s 2026 reforms target storm work directly. A roofer may not interpret your policy, act as a public adjuster or advertise as an insurance claims specialist, and since 1 August 2026 any assignment of post-loss insurance benefits to a contractor is void. Paying, waiving or rebating your deductible without the insurer’s consent is an offence for the roofer and for you. Unlicensed contracting is a misdemeanour of up to $500 a day, and the board can fine up to 10 percent of the contract.
Parishes and towns that issue permits must now permit and inspect every reroof of a one or two family house, and inspectors may accept geotagged photos. The City of Alexandria charges $15 for the first $1,000 of value and $5 for each further $1,000, so a $15,000 reroof costs $85, and every contractor must register with the city before starting work. The city has adopted the 2021 International Residential Code. Repairs to a manufactured home fall to the state Manufactured Housing Commission, not the building code.
County-filed NOAA records for Rapides and Grant parishes show 49 hail reports from 2016 to 2025, the largest 3.5 inches, 117 thunderstorm wind reports and 36 tornado records, one of them EF3 and seven EF2, with $28.1 million of damage. The two 2020 hurricanes, filed by forecast zone, add $580 million more. Nearly one home in five in the metro is a mobile home, and its median home was built in 1983. The state’s Fortify Homes Program offers grants to retrofit a homestead roof to the FORTIFIED standard.
Alexandria roofers verified on the state licence register
No roofer serving the metro clears our certified ranking floor, so none is ranked. These five hold Louisiana’s Residential Roofing classification, active on the State Licensing Board for Contractors register when we checked in October 2026. They are not scored and we are not recommending them. We checked and left out others, including a local roofer whose residential licence is suspended and two firms licensed for commercial work only.

Roof replacement and repair in Alexandria, LA
Short answer: No certified firm appears in the directory for Alexandria, so none is ranked. Five roofers held Louisiana’s Residential Roofing classification when we checked in October 2026: Hahn Roofing, Cross Construction Co., NELA Roofing, Edwards Roofing and Construction and JLF Enterprises; they are not scored or recommended. The rule that matters most: since 1 January 2026 residential roofing work worth $7,500 or more requires the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification, so check the classification itself.
Central Louisiana sits 150 miles from the Gulf and still took two hurricanes in six weeks in 2020. Laura’s gusts reached 65 to 105 mph across Rapides Parish on 27 August, put the whole parish without power and left $500 million of damage; Delta followed with gusts around 65 mph and 10 to 20 inches of rain. Tornadoes are the recurring threat inside the city: on 16 December 2019 an EF3 of 158 mph entered western Alexandria and damaged roughly 575 structures, and homes off Cloverleaf Boulevard and Larkspur Drive were left with significant roof structure damage. Rapides and Grant parishes also logged 49 hail reports from 2016 to 2025, the largest 3.5 inches.
The city has adopted the 2021 International Residential Code, under which R908.3 requires removing existing layers down to the deck for a roof replacement, and a recover is not allowed over a water-soaked or deteriorated roof, over slate, clay, cement or asbestos-cement tile, or over two or more existing layers.

The 49 inch-plus hail reports behind an Alexandria roof
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the Alexandria, LA statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 49 hail reports, 117 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 36 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $28.1 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Alexandria in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20 June 2023 | 3.5 in | Echo | Rapides |
| 3 May 2017 | 2.75 in | Forest Hill | Rapides |
| 26 March 2023 | 2.75 in | Cheneyville | Rapides |
| 3 May 2017 | 2.0 in | Forest Hill | Rapides |
| 12 October 2022 | 2.0 in | Stay | Grant |
| 31 March 2016 | 2.0 in | Pollock | Grant |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 20 June 2023 near Echo, measured at 3.5 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 96 knots, about 110 mph, near Libuse on 20 June 2019. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 36 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF3 near Hineston on 16 December 2019.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 20 June 2019 event near Libuse, reproduced verbatim:
A thunderstorm moved eastward through Rapides Parish during the early morning hours of June 20 2019. This resulted in sporadic areas of damage along Philadelphia Road. The most concentrated damage occurred from Creduer Road southeast to Denny Road where numerous trees were either uprooted or snapped halfway up the trunk. Several of the trees fell on homes resulting in damage. The fall pattern of all the trees was within 45 degrees of due east and consistent with downburst winds. When compared with the eyewitness timelines of when the damage occurred, radar data indicated that the strongest winds were associated with downburst winds that pushed out ahead of the storm. Maximum winds with this…
That is the kind of damage a roof in this metro has to be specified against, described by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in April (52), May (41), March (22). The worst years on record were 2024 (41), 2017 (27), 2025 (27). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Alexandria, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Alexandria. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.
Inland but not sheltered: two 2020 hurricanes and a tornado corridor
Hurricane Laura came ashore at Cameron as a category 4 on 27 August 2020 and was still strong when it crossed central Louisiana. Alexandria International Airport recorded a sustained wind of 54 knots and a gust of 78 knots, about 90 mph. The Weather Service’s Rapides Parish entry describes trees, power lines and poles down across the parish, homes and businesses damaged by fallen trees or by the wind itself, the whole parish without power and gusts of 65 to 105 mph; it puts the damage at $500 million. In Grant Parish a survey found a cluster of metal buildings near Dry Prong had lost much of their roof panels.
Six weeks later Hurricane Delta brought gusts around 65 mph across Rapides, a 63 mph gust at the airport and 10 to 20 inches of rain, with $80 million of recorded damage and 50 high water rescues. A county storm count contains neither storm, because NOAA files hurricanes by forecast zone: the two zone rows alone carry $580 million, against $28.1 million for every hail, wind and tornado record filed for the two parishes across the decade.
Tornadoes are the recurring threat inside the city. On 16 December 2019 an EF3 with winds estimated at 158 mph entered western Alexandria, heavily damaging or destroying mobile homes, warehouses and houses on slabs around Ross Lane and Highway 128, then as an EF2 left homes off Cloverleaf Boulevard and Larkspur Drive with significant roof structure damage. The Weather Service counted roughly 575 damaged structures and $22 million of damage.
Alexandria had already been hit twice. On 31 October 2018 an EF2 of 135 mph removed the roof of a restaurant on MacArthur Drive, damaged businesses around Lee and Overton streets and crossed the Red River into Pineville, bringing trees down on homes along Donahue Ferry Road. On 2 April 2017 an EF1 pulled shingles and soffits off homes in Cherokee Village and Plantation Acres and lifted flat roofs off businesses on Jackson Street.
After a storm here, the new rules are your protection: a roofer bidding $7,500 or more must hold the residential roofing or residential construction classification, the reroof must be permitted and inspected, and no contractor may take an assignment of your insurance benefits. Mobile homes, nearly one home in five in the metro and the housing the storm narratives list again and again, follow separate federal standards for repair.

How to tell an Alexandria roofer’s claims from their record
Licensing is required in LA. Louisiana requires a roofing-specific licence classification. Under La. R.S. 37:2156.4(A), on and after 1 January 2026 any person who advertises, solicits, undertakes, offers or submits a price, bid, quote or estimate to construct, modify, repair or maintain any portion of a roofing system on a residential structure worth $7,500 or more must hold the classification of Residential Roofing or Residential Construction. Unusually for this trade, subsection B requires a residential roofing contractor to pass the residential roofing trade examination, so unlike Alabama or New Jersey this is a competency licence and not merely a registration.
Residential roofing is a subclassification of residential construction, and Act 757 of 2026, effective 1 August 2026, added subsection D extending the rule to any residential structure containing no more than four dwelling units. The penalties are real. Under R.S. 37:2163 it is unlawful to act as a contractor without an active licence, and a violation is a misdemeanour carrying a fine of up to $500 per day of violation, or three months in prison, or both. Where an unlicensed person causes harm or damage exceeding $300, the penalty rises to a fine of between $500 and $5,000, or imprisonment with or without hard labour for between six months and five years, or both. R.S. 37:2163(A)(2) separately makes it unlawful for any contractor, licensed or unlicensed, to publish or circulate a misleading or false claim about a person’s licence or classification in any medium, including digital platforms. Act 757 also set a $500,000 minimum liability insurance requirement for residential licensees from 1 August 2026 and made any assignment of post-loss insurance benefits to a contractor void. Most firms that already held Residential Construction, Building Construction or Commercial Roofing qualified without sitting the new roofing exam.
Check here: Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors. Check the classification itself on the board’s lookup, not just that a licence exists, because the statute names two classifications specifically. It is worth knowing that misrepresenting a licence or classification in advertising is itself unlawful in Louisiana under R.S. 37:2163(A)(2), so what a contractor claims about its credentials on its own website is a statement the state can act on.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
The Alexandria market behind this ranking
0 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Alexandria, LA statistical area, of which 0 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 0 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.55. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 148,008, a change of -2.75% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.

How these Alexandria rankings were produced
Every contractor in the Alexandria, LA pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 0 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.55. No contractor cleared the floor, so the alternatives listed above were instead researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Good and bad findings are published together, and no contractor paid for a place here.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Last updated: October 2026. Scoring run: 2026-10-09. Corrections go to the editor and are actioned on verification.
Common questions about roofers in Alexandria
Who are the best roofers in Alexandria, LA?
No Alexandria roofer holds GAF certification with at least five reviews, so The Roofing Brief ranks none. It verified five roofers holding Louisiana’s residential roofing classification on the state register instead: Hahn Roofing, Cross Construction, NELA Roofing, Edwards Roofing and Construction and JLF Enterprises. Since 1 January 2026 any residential roofing job of $7,500 or more needs that classification or a residential construction licence, and since August 2026 a roofer may not take an assignment of your insurance benefits.
What is the 25% rule for roofing in Louisiana?
Louisiana has no statewide 25 percent roof rule. Where the 2021 International Residential Code applies, a roof replacement removes existing layers down to the deck, and a recover is not allowed over a deteriorated roof or over two or more existing layers; there is no percentage trigger. Louisiana also has no insurance matching statute.
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Alexandria, LA?
Yes. Parishes and towns that issue permits must now permit and inspect every reroof of a one or two family house. The City of Alexandria charges $15 for the first $1,000 of value and $5 for each further $1,000, so a $15,000 reroof costs $85, and the contractor must register with the city first.
Who does roof repair in Alexandria, LA?
No certified firm appears in the directory for Alexandria, so none is ranked. Five firms held the Residential Roofing classification when we checked in October 2026, including Hahn Roofing, NELA Roofing and Cross Construction Co., but they are not scored and we are not recommending them.
How do I know if a roofer in Alexandria is licensed?
Check the State Licensing Board for Contractors lookup for the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification itself, not just a licence number. Misrepresenting a licence or classification in advertising is itself unlawful under R.S. 37:2163(A)(2), so a contractor’s credential claims are statements the state can act on.
Can a roofer handle my insurance claim in Louisiana?
No.
How many certified roofing contractors serve Alexandria?
0 contractors on the GAF certification registry serve the principal cities of the Alexandria, LA statistical area as of October 2026, of which 0 hold President’s Club status.
How much damaging hail does Alexandria get?
The Alexandria, LA statistical area recorded 49 hail reports of 1 inch or larger and 6 of 2 inches or larger between 2016 and 2025 in the NOAA Storm Events Database. The largest hailstone reported measured 3.5 inches.
Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?
No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on every verified alternative listed.
What was the worst hailstorm in Alexandria in the last ten years?
The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Alexandria, LA statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 3.5 inches, reported near Echo on 20 June 2023. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired. Across the decade the metro recorded 49 hail reports. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $28.1 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.
When is the worst time of year for roof damage in Alexandria?
Severe-weather reports in the Alexandria, LA statistical area cluster in April, May, March, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Scheduling discretionary work away from that window tends to get you a better crew and a faster start, because nobody is juggling emergency callouts.
Do roofers need a licence in LA?
What should I check before hiring a roofer in Alexandria?
Check the classification itself on the board’s lookup, not just that a licence exists, because the statute names two classifications specifically. It is worth knowing that misrepresenting a licence or classification in advertising is itself unlawful in Louisiana under R.S. 37:2163(A)(2), so what a contractor claims about its credentials on its own website is a statement the state can act on.

Is Alexandria a hard market to find a good roofer in?
Central Louisiana sits 150 miles from the Gulf and still took two hurricanes in six weeks in 2020: Laura’s gusts reached 105 mph across Rapides Parish and put the whole parish in the dark, and Delta followed with up to 20 inches of rain. Tornadoes are the recurring threat, including an EF3 that entered western Alexandria in December 2019. Louisiana now requires a residential roofing licence, but few local firms hold it, and no certified firm appears in the directory for Alexandria, so none is ranked.
Is wind or hail the bigger risk to a roof in Alexandria?
Wind, by a wide margin. The Alexandria, LA statistical area logged 117 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 49 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
