Best Roofers in Houma, LA: Why None Is Ranked, and Who We Verified

No Houma roofer clears our certified ranking floor. The contractors we verified individually against local licence and manufacturer records, and the checks to run before you hire. No paid placement.

Best Roofers in Houma, LA: Why None Is Ranked, and Who We Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026 The Roofing Brief ranks no roofer in the Houma-Thibodaux metro. Only one manufacturer-certified firm with five or more reviews appears in the directory, and on the Louisiana licensing board’s register it shows no Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification, which state law has required since 1 January 2026 for residential roofing jobs of $7,500 or more. Instead this page lists four local roofers that hold one of those classifications, verified on the register.

The Roofing Brief searched the GAF certification registry across the principal cities of the Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux, LA statistical area. No roofing contractor based inside the metro clears the evidence floor this ranking applies, which is manufacturer certification plus at least five independent customer reviews, so this page ranks nobody rather than pad a list. What it does instead is set out the contractors we could verify individually against the credential that actually exists here. Three hurricanes came ashore inside Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes in four years: Zeta in 2020, Ida at Category 4 in 2021, and Francine in 2024. After Ida, NWS estimated that close to three-quarters of Lafourche’s structures were damaged, many losing large parts of their roofs. Louisiana now requires a residential roofing classification for jobs of $7,500 or more, and Lafourche Parish permits reroofs against wind-rated shingle and nailing rules. The state register, not a manufacturer badge, is the credential to check here.

What a Houma roof is up against

Since 1 January 2026, La. R.S. 37:2156.4 has required anyone bidding or doing work on a residential roofing system worth $7,500 or more to hold the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification, and since 1 August 2026 Act 757 has applied that to buildings of up to four dwelling units and set a $500,000 liability insurance minimum for residential licensees. The residential roofing trade exam now exists, though existing holders of related classifications were exempted. Contracting without an active licence is a misdemeanour under R.S. 37:2163, with penalties rising to $5,000 or five years where an unlicensed contractor causes harm over $300, and false claims about a licence are unlawful in themselves.

Louisiana also bars deductible games: under R.S. 51:451 a seller paid from an insurance claim may not pay, waive or absorb your deductible without the insurer’s consent, with fines of up to $500 or 30 days in jail for each offence. Because unlicensed contracting is common after hurricanes, the register lookup is the most useful single check: it shows the classification, whether the licence is active, and the insurance on file.

Lafourche Parish charges a flat $100 for a residential roof replacement permit, on a form revised in August 2026. The applicant must supply a copy of a residential contractor or roofing licence; shingles must meet the ASTM D 3161 wind standard or a Miami-Dade equivalent, with at least six nails each; replacement decking must be at least 7/16 inch; and an inspection must be called. The parish enforces the 2021 International Residential Code. We could not reach Terrebonne Parish’s permit pages.

Between hurricanes the convective record is modest: across 2016 to 2025 the two parishes logged 29 hail reports, the largest 3.5 inches at Bayou Boeuf in June 2023, 34 thunderstorm wind reports and seven tornadoes. The hurricane damage sits in separate zone records: about $3 billion for Ida, $100 million for Zeta and $60 million for Francine. The metro’s median home was built in 1982, the city of Houma’s in 1973, and mobile homes are 15.6 percent of the housing.

Houma roofers verified on the state licensing register

No roofer qualifies for a ranking in the metro, so none is ranked. These four were checked on the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors register, and each holds the Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification. They are not scored and we are not recommending them. We left out others, including a long-established Houma firm whose register entry shows only a home improvement registration, and two firms listed locally that are based in Texas and Missouri.

Company Verified credential

Alliance Roofing and Construction LLC Residential licence RL.13819 with Residential Roofing and a commercial roofing licence, both issued in August 2026, in Lockport. The licences are valid but very new, and we found no BBB profile.

What 3.5 inch hail does to a Houma roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 2 counties of the Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux, LA statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 29 hail reports, 34 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 7 tornadoes. The database’s property-damage fields are left blank for most of these reports, so it carries no usable loss total for this metro and we do not quote one.

The biggest hail to fall on Houma in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
20 June 2023 3.5 in Bayou Boeuf Lafourche
18 March 2016 2.0 in Lafourche Lafourche
19 March 2018 2.0 in Montegut Terrebonne
18 March 2016 1.75 in Raceland Lafourche
21 June 2023 1.75 in Golden Meadow Lafourche
13 April 2016 1.5 in Thibodaux Lafourche

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 20 June 2023 near Bayou Boeuf, measured at 3.5 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 65 knots, about 75 mph, near Port Fourchon on 14 January 2016. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 7 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF1 near Galliano on 22 April 2018.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 3 May 2017 event near Port Fourchon, reproduced verbatim:

A few power poles were snapped and others bent over in the marshy area along Louisiana Highway 1 west of Grand Isle. Event time was estimated based on radar.

That is what the specification has to anticipate here, written up by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in March (15), May (15), April (15). The worst years on record were 2023 (18), 2016 (17), 2017 (9). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Houma, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Houma. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

Three landfalls in four years

Hurricane Zeta came ashore near Cocodrie in Terrebonne Parish on 28 October 2020 at 100 knots, with a gust of 96 knots measured at Golden Meadow. In Lower Lafourche officials counted 23 homes destroyed, 59 with major damage and 118 with minor damage; in Upper Terrebonne, NWS recorded siding and roof damage to hundreds of homes.

Ten months later Ida made landfall at Port Fourchon on 29 August 2021 with 130-knot winds, tied as the strongest on record to strike Louisiana west of the Mississippi’s mouth, and its eye passed between Houma and New Orleans. The National Hurricane Center wrote that in coastal Lafourche almost every structure was damaged. NWS recorded that numerous homes, businesses and public buildings lost significant portions of their roofs, including the parish’s own emergency operations centre, and estimated that close to 75 percent of Lafourche’s structures were damaged. In Terrebonne about 60 percent of homes in the bayou communities were deemed unsafe to live in, many having lost their roofs.

Francine followed on 11 September 2024, coming ashore in Terrebonne at 90 knots. NWS recorded that it tore the roof of a church in Houma, damaged the power plant, severely damaged a warehouse in Bayou Cane, and left nearly the whole parish without power.

The rules have tightened since. Louisiana’s residential roofing classification came into force on 1 January 2026, and Lafourche Parish’s roof permit now requires wind-rated shingles with at least six nails each and solid decking, records whether the new roof is built to the FORTIFIED standard, and requires an inspection. We found no document saying the parish changed its form because of Ida, so we claim no link.

For a Houma or Thibodaux homeowner, the checks are clear: the roofer’s classification on the state register, a permit in its name, shingles rated to ASTM D 3161 and the six-nail pattern on the quote, and no offer to cover the deductible. Ask too whether the roof can be built to FORTIFIED, which some insurers reward.

How to tell a Houma roofer’s claims from their record

Licensing is required in LA. Louisiana requires a roofing-specific licence classification. Under La. R.S. 37:2156.4(A), on and after 1 January 2026 any person who advertises, solicits, undertakes, offers or submits a price, bid, quote or estimate to construct, modify, repair or maintain any portion of a roofing system on a residential structure worth $7,500 or more must hold the classification of Residential Roofing or Residential Construction. Unusually for this trade, subsection B requires a residential roofing contractor to pass the residential roofing trade examination, so unlike Alabama or New Jersey this is a competency licence and not merely a registration.

Residential roofing is a subclassification of residential construction, and Act 757 of 2026, effective 1 August 2026, added subsection D extending the rule to any residential structure containing no more than four dwelling units. The penalties are real. Under R.S. 37:2163 it is unlawful to act as a contractor without an active licence, and a violation is a misdemeanour carrying a fine of up to $500 per day of violation, or three months in prison, or both. Where an unlicensed person causes harm or damage exceeding $300, the penalty rises to a fine of between $500 and $5,000, or imprisonment with or without hard labour for between six months and five years, or both. R.S. 37:2163(A)(2) separately makes it unlawful for any contractor, licensed or unlicensed, to publish or circulate a misleading or false claim about a person’s licence or classification in any medium, including digital platforms.

Check here: Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors. Check the classification itself on the board’s lookup, not just that a licence exists, because the statute names two classifications specifically. It is worth knowing that misrepresenting a licence or classification in advertising is itself unlawful in Louisiana under R.S. 37:2163(A)(2), so what a contractor claims about its credentials on its own website is a statement the state can act on.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Houma rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Houma-Bayou Cane-Thibodaux, LA pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 0 certified contractors, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.5. No contractor cleared the floor, so the alternatives listed above were instead researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. The findings are printed above whether they flatter the contractor or not, and nobody paid to appear.

Set aside in Houma. A contractor that would otherwise have scored into the top no was removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.

  • Ameristar Roofing & Restoration LLC, which scored 57.0: Excluded because the Louisiana register, checked on 6 October 2026, shows no Residential Roofing or Residential Construction classification for it, which R.S. 37:2156.4 has required since 1 January 2026 for residential roofing jobs of $7,500 or more. Its Louisiana company holds only a home improvement registration with a Missouri mailing address, and a Texas affiliate at the same Houma address holds a commercial roofing licence. The licence number on its website matches no number on the register, and the A+ BBB rating it cites belongs to its Texas office; the Houma profile is unrated. This is a register observation, not a finding of wrongdoing.
