Best Roofers in Charleston, WV: 1 Certified Contractor, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the one highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Charleston, WV metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Design Roofing & Sheet Metal (86.6). Every one holds a manufacturer certification that can be verified independently, every rating below has been corroborated against at least one source outside the certification registry, and no company paid to appear here.

The Roofing Brief scored 1 certified roofing contractors serving the Charleston metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top one individually to confirm its record. On 2 April 2024 a squall line ran straight down the Kanawha Valley and produced ten tornadoes, a West Virginia record, five of them in Kanawha County, blowing roofs off homes in Dunbar and Hernshaw. West Virginia licenses contractors by job size rather than trade, and its Storm Scammer Act makes rebating a deductible a crime. Two certified firms appear in the directory; one describes itself as a gutter company, so one is ranked, and five more local roofers are listed for comparison.

The conditions a Charleston, WV roof has to be specified for

West Virginia licenses contractors by the size of the job: under W. Va. Code 30-42-3 a residential job of $5,000 or more needs a Contractor Licensing Board licence. There is no roofing licence class; a roofing firm is normally licensed as a Specialty contractor with roofing in its scope. Every applicant passes the state business and law exam, but the state requires no bond and no liability insurance. Its strongest lever is the permit desk: a building inspector may not issue a permit to anyone who needs a licence and lacks one, and a written contract is mandatory at $10,000 or more.

West Virginia’s Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act, W. Va. Code 46A-6M, governs insurance-funded roofing. You may cancel before midnight on the fifth business day after the insurer tells you all or part of the claim is not covered; the roofer may take no advance payment before then, apart from emergency repairs, and may not negotiate your claim. Offering to pay or rebate your deductible is a misdemeanour, punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 or up to a year in jail.

The City of Charleston requires a permit for all construction work, roofs included, and a contractor who starts without one faces at least a $100 fee or double the permit, and a minimum three-month suspension of its city licence. Permits are free up to $2,500 of work, about $50 on a $10,000 job, and jobs over $10,000 need a copy of the signed contract. The city also refuses permits to contractors with expired insurance or an expired state licence, and charges a 2 percent business tax on contracting work. Outside the city, adoption of the state building code is a county option.

Across 2016 to 2025 Boone, Clay and Kanawha counties logged 401 thunderstorm wind reports, 64 hail reports and eight tornadoes, all in Kanawha. All four hail reports of two inches or more came from one storm on 23 May 2019, including softball-size hail at Pinch. The housing is old: the metro’s median home dates from 1968 and the city of Charleston’s from 1957, and mobile homes are 32 percent of housing in Clay County and 27 percent in Boone.

What they actually do. Shingle and metal roofing, commercial TPO, sheet metal, gutters, siding and emergency tarping.

Why it ranks here. A large roofing and sheet metal firm with President’s Club certification from GAF and top-tier status with Owens Corning, an unusual pairing, and a 4.8 across 324 reviews, publishing a service area that covers Charleston and a dozen Kanawha communities.

Best fit for: Metal and sheet metal work, and larger storm replacements.

What we would want clarified. BBB rates it B- and not accredited, with five complaints closed in three years, which we could not read; check them before signing. It is based in Hurricane, Putnam County, about 20 miles west and outside the metro. Its founding year is 1985 on its site and 2009 on BBB. Its West Virginia licence appears only in a third-party copy of the register, so ask for the number. Certification tier and reviews are unverified. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (681) 691-6686, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

Other roofers serving Charleston

Only one certified firm is ranked here. These five are based in Kanawha County with an Owens Corning credential or BBB accreditation. They are not scored and we are not recommending them; the state licence register could not be reached, so ask each for its West Virginia licence number. We left out others that are commercial-only, window-led or based outside the metro.

The 44 hail reports behind a Charleston, WV roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 3 counties of the Charleston, WV statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 64 hail reports, 401 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 8 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $3.5 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Charleston in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
23 May 2019 4.25 in Pinch Kanawha
23 May 2019 3.0 in Blue Creek Kanawha
23 May 2019 2.5 in Jarretts Ford Kanawha
23 May 2019 2.5 in Blue Creek Kanawha
8 June 2022 1.75 in Guthrie Kanawha
8 June 2022 1.75 in Wallace Kanawha

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 23 May 2019 near Pinch, measured at 4.25 inches. That is grapefruit sized. Stones that big destroy asphalt shingles outright, dent metal, crack tile and routinely total roofs across whole neighbourhoods.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 87 knots, about 100 mph, near Wallace on 24 June 2019. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 8 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Nitro on 2 April 2024.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 24 June 2019 event near Wallace, reproduced verbatim:

A microburst caused damagae near Wallace on the afternoon of the 24th, with estimated max wind speeds of 90-100 mph. The microburst began along Sissonville Drive just north of the intersection with Call Road. Limited tree damage was noted to the north and west of this point. More widespread tree damage was noted to the south along Wolf Pen Drive and Old Tuppers Creek Road. In addition to tree damage, a carport was destroyed and a fence was pushed over.

A roof in this metro is built against events like that one, as recorded by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in June (115), July (107), April (90). The worst years on record were 2022 (84), 2025 (84), 2024 (68). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Charleston, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Hail is not the governing risk in Charleston. Weight your decision toward wind rating, ventilation and flashing detail rather than paying extra for impact-rated shingles.

2 April 2024: a record outbreak down the Kanawha Valley

Late in the morning of 2 April 2024 an intense squall line crossed West Virginia, producing a 92 mph gust at Huntington’s airport and at least nine embedded tornadoes in a corridor from Huntington to east of Charleston, with more than 100 locations reporting wind damage. Its ten confirmed tornadoes set the state record for a single event. Five of the eight tornadoes recorded in Kanawha County over the decade happened that day.

The strongest, an EF2 with 115 mph winds, ran eight miles from Cross Lanes to south of Wallace; a large hardwood fell onto a home in Cross Lanes and badly damaged its second storey. An EF1 skipped from St. Albans across the Kanawha River into Dunbar, where NWS found siding and shingle damage on several homes and apartment buildings and a home’s roof blown off near Route 60. Another EF1 tracked from Kanawha State Forest to Hernshaw and Marmet, blowing the top roof off a home and rolling an RV.

Straight-line wind did its own damage that day: a 65 knot gust ripped part of a sheet metal roof off a mobile home in St. Albans, a 61 knot gust partly destroyed a brick facade on Kanawha Boulevard in Charleston, and two radio towers collapsed at Institute.

Nearly every survey narrative from the day leads with snapped or uprooted trees falling on homes, the usual way roofs fail on the valley’s wooded hillsides. And the housing they fell on is old: almost 40 percent of the metro’s homes were built before 1960.

After an event like this, West Virginia’s Storm Scammer Act is the homeowner’s tool: five business days to cancel after a denial, no advance payment before then, no claim negotiation by the roofer, and a criminal ban on rebating the deductible. Inside Charleston, insist that the roofer pulls the permit, because that is where the city checks its licence and insurance.

How to check a Charleston, WV roofer in ten minutes

Licensing is required in WV. West Virginia licenses contractors through the Contractor Licensing Board, but the requirement turns on the size of the job rather than on the trade. Under W. Va. Code 30-42-3(d) a person is a “contractor”, and so needs a licence, once the cost of the undertaking reaches $5,000 for residential work or $25,000 for commercial work. Below $5,000 a residential re-roof falls outside the definition entirely and no state licence is required. Note that the Act was moved in 2021 from Chapter 21, Article 11 to Chapter 30, Article 42, so older guidance citing a $2,500 threshold is quoting repealed law.

There is no roofing classification among West Virginia’s tested licence types; a roofing-only firm is normally licensed as a Specialty contractor with roofing listed in its scope, and a Residential licence also covers roofing. Every applicant must pass the West Virginia business and law examination at 70 percent; any further exam for a specialty licence is set by the Board. The state requires no licence bond or general liability insurance, and the licence fee is capped at $150 a year. Separately, the Storm Scammer Consumer Protection Act (W. Va. Code 46A-6M) lets a homeowner cancel an insurance-funded roofing contract before midnight on the fifth business day after the insurer denies all or part of the claim, bars advance payments and claim negotiation by roofers, and makes offering to pay or rebate a deductible a misdemeanour punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 or up to a year in jail.

Check here: West Virginia Contractor Licensing Board licence lookup. The permit desk is the strongest lever a West Virginia homeowner has. Under W. Va. Code 30-42-10(a) an applicant must either prove to the building inspector that they are licensed or file an affidavit that they are not subject to licensure, and the inspector may not issue a building permit to a person who does not hold a valid licence where one is required. A written contract is separately mandatory at $10,000 or more. So a contractor who suggests working without a permit is also routing around the one checkpoint that tests their licence.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Charleston, WV rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Charleston, WV pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 1 certified contractor, of whom 1 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.8. The top one were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Where that research turned up something awkward it is on the page, and no placement was paid for.

Set aside in Charleston. A contractor that would otherwise have scored into the top one was removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.

  • Superior Home Specialists, which scored 64.1: Excluded as primarily a gutter company: its own site says it specialises in gutter solutions, and its menu leads with gutters and siding, with roofing third. Separately, BBB rates it F and not accredited, with four complaints closed in three years; we could not read the complaints, which are allegations rather than findings.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Wind, by a wide margin. The Charleston, WV statistical area logged 401 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports against 44 hail reports of an inch or more between 2016 and 2025. Wind damage shows up at the rake, ridge and edge rather than across the field of the roof, so the fastening schedule and edge detail matter more here than the impact rating of the shingle.
