Best Roofers in Tyler, TX: 1 Certified Contractor, Scored and Verified

Short answer: As of October 2026, the one highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Tyler, TX metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Tyler Roofing Co Inc (45.0). Every one holds a manufacturer certification that can be verified independently, every rating below has been corroborated against at least one source outside the certification registry, and no company paid to appear here.

The Roofing Brief scored 1 certified roofing contractors serving the Tyler metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top one individually to confirm its record. The manufacturer directory this ranking is built on lists exactly two roofing firms for every search around Tyler, and one of them has no reviews. That leaves one certified firm to rank, and it would be a poor guide to this market to stop there. Tyler is where East Texas’s roofing credentials actually concentrate, just not in this network: twelve Owens Corning members within 30 miles, including both of the region’s top-tier Platinum Preferred firms, and nine holders of the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas licence in Smith County. Texas licenses no roofers and the City of Tyler does not register them either, so those voluntary credentials are the only roofing-specific ones that exist here. We rank the one certified firm and name six of the others below.

The conditions a Tyler roof has to be specified for

This is an April hail market. Across 2016 to 2025 Smith County logged 103 hail reports, 79 of them at an inch or more and 9 at two inches or more, with April the busiest month at 31 reports and every two-inch report falling between February and June. The largest stones were 2.75 inches, reported twice: near Pine Springs on 13 June 2023, which the NWS narrative describes as baseball size hail six miles north east of Tyler, and near Noonday on 11 February 2024. The county also logged 135 thunderstorm wind reports, 44 of them at 58 knots, roughly 67 mph, or more, and 13 tornado segments.

Tornadoes have touched the city itself. On 20 April 2023 an NWS survey confirmed a weak EF0 near 80 mph in Midtown Tyler that tore a few shingles off a funeral home near East 1st Street and South Fleishel Avenue and peeled part of a metal roof from a nearby medical building. On 6 May 2025 an EF1 near 93 mph crossed the north side of Bullard, where the survey found quite a few residences with low end roof damage, mainly shingle loss, and on 28 October 2025 another EF1 struck north east of Lindale.

Nobody licenses roofers here. The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas states plainly that the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation does not administer licensure for roofing contractors and that anyone can call themselves a roofer in Texas. The City of Tyler’s master registration form offers categories for general contractors, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, irrigation, swimming pools, demolition and more, but none for roofing. What the city does require is a permit: residential roof replacement is a flat $100 on its fee schedule, and Tyler follows the 2021 International Code Council standards with local amendments in chapter 6 of its code.

The one statute that protects you is about your deductible, and it is often misquoted. House Bill 2102, in force since 1 September 2019, added Insurance Code section 707.002, which obliges the insured to pay the deductible. The offence that binds the contractor sits in Business and Commerce Code section 27.02, a Class B misdemeanour, and section 27.02(b) requires any contract of $1,000 or more expected to be paid from insurance proceeds to carry a notice to that effect in at least 12 point bold type. The county is growing, from an April 2020 base of 233,480 to 249,091 in July 2024, and its median year built is 1986 countywide and 1978 in the city.

What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing in the Tyler market.

Why it ranks here. A Sukiennik family business trading from Spur 164 in Tyler since 1983, a date on which BBB and the company’s own site agree, and BBB accredited since 1986, which is forty years of unbroken accreditation and among the longest we have recorded anywhere in this programme. It has no complaints closed in three years and its own site describes Tyler as its market.

Best fit for: Homeowners who weight four decades of local trading and accreditation above credential count.

What we would want clarified. Two limits. It holds no RCAT licence and is not in the Owens Corning network, so its only roofing-specific credential is the manufacturer certification we score, which we could not independently confirm. And its consumer record is thin: 10 reviews at 4.2, which is little evidence in either direction. Its website footer also says in business since 1993, which conflicts with the 1983 date; we treat 1983 as better supported. Compare it against at least one of the RCAT-licensed firms below. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (903) 597-2274, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.

The 79 hail reports behind a Tyler roof

Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Tyler, TX statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 103 hail reports, 135 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 13 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $1.1 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Tyler in a decade

Date Stone size Reported near County
11 February 2024 2.75 in Noonday Smith
13 June 2023 2.75 in Pine Spgs Smith
3 May 2017 2.5 in Tyler Smith
13 June 2023 2.5 in Swan Smith
13 June 2023 2.25 in Lindale Smith
11 February 2024 2.0 in Peaceful Vly Smith

The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 11 February 2024 near Noonday, measured at 2.75 inches. That is baseball sized, comfortably past the point where a roof is written off rather than repaired.

Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 87 knots, about 100 mph, near Whitehouse on 5 April 2022. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.

Tornadoes. 13 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Lindale on 29 April 2016.

What the National Weather Service wrote about it

The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 5 April 2022 event near Whitehouse, reproduced verbatim:

A downburst affected much of the southern and eastern sections of the city of Whitehouse, resulting in numerous trees being snapped and uprooted along its path. The majority of the more significant damage occurred in an east-southeasterly direction, which began in the Willows subdivision just west of Willingham Road, where several small Bradford pear trees were snapped, and small areas of shingles were ripped from the roofs of a couple of homes with winds estimated in the range of 70-75 mph. The winds from this downburst intensified as it crossed Willingham Road, affecting several streets along and to the west of Highway 110. Here, numerous hardwood trees and large limbs were snapped and…

A roof in this metro is built against events like that one, as recorded by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.

When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in April (71), May (52), June (38). The worst years on record were 2023 (39), 2024 (38), 2017 (33). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Tyler, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.

What to do with this. Tyler sees enough damaging hail that a Class 4 impact-rated shingle is worth pricing, though not automatically worth buying. Get both quotes and weigh the premium against any insurance discount.

Owens Corning and RCAT country: where Tyler’s roofing credentials actually sit

In a state with no roofing licence and a city with no roofer registration, a homeowner in Tyler has only two kinds of roofing credential to check: a manufacturer’s contractor network, and the voluntary licence the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas issues. Both are dense here. They just are not in the network this ranking is built on, which is why the certified pool collapses to a single firm.

Owens Corning’s own locator returns 12 network members within 30 miles of central Tyler. Two carry its top tier, Platinum Preferred: Advantage Roofing Company on State Highway 155 South in Tyler, and Priority Contracting and Roofing at Lindale. Those are the only two Platinum Preferred firms in East Texas, which is the clearest sign that Tyler, not Longview or Nacogdoches, is where the region’s certified roofing capacity has settled.

RCAT’s licence is the closest thing Texas has to a roofing exam. To hold one a firm’s principal must have been a principal in a Texas-domiciled roofing company for at least two years with a fixed address and must pass business, safety and trade examinations. RCAT’s directory, searched on 4 October 2026, lists nine licence holders in Smith County. The licence number encodes the class: 01 for residential, 02 for commercial and 03 for both. Four Tyler firms hold both an Owens Corning listing and an RCAT licence, which is the strongest credential combination available in this market: Advantage, Cable’s, Steele and AVCO.

Two cautions about reading these credentials. First, network membership and RCAT membership are not the same as an RCAT licence: Priority appears in RCAT’s directory as a member since 2018 with no licence shown. Second, size is not locality. Priority runs more than 40 locations across Texas and at least 15 other states, with separate Texas entities for different cities, so you may be dealing with a branch of a national operator rather than a Tyler business. Neither is a criticism; both are things to know.

There is also no local trade institution pulling these firms together. RCAT has six regional chapters, covering Central Texas, Houston, Lubbock, North Texas, the Panhandle and a suspended Abilene chapter, and none in East Texas. So the practical test in Tyler is the one you run yourself: ask for the RCAT licence number and look it up, ask for the manufacturer network and check it on the manufacturer’s own locator, pull the $100 permit, and make sure any insurance-funded contract carries the bold-type deductible notice the law requires.

The checks worth making in Tyler

There is no state roofing licence in TX. Texas does not issue or require a state roofing contractor licence. There is no state exam, no state licence number to check, and no state board that can discipline a roofer.

The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) runs a voluntary Licensed Roofing Contractor program requiring two years of Texas experience, a fixed business address, a business and safety exam and a roofing exam at 70% or better, and at least $300,000 general liability insurance for residential work or a $100,000 surety bond.

That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.

Check here: RCAT licensed contractor lookup. Many Texas cities still require roofers to register with the municipality and pull a permit, so check with the city building department where the work will happen.

Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.

  1. Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
  2. Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
  3. Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
  4. Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.

How these Tyler rankings were produced

Every contractor in the Tyler, TX pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 1 certified contractor, of whom 0 hold President’s Club standing and 0 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.2. The top one were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Where that research turned up something awkward it is on the page, and no placement was paid for.

The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page.
