Short answer: As of October 2026, the five highest-scoring roofing contractors in the Sherman-Denison, TX metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score are Lankford Roofing (95.4), Get Roofed (87.7), RoofHero (74.6), Galt Construction (53.6), Tallent Roofing (53.5). All of them carry a verifiable manufacturer certification, every rating here was cross-checked against an independent record, and no money changed hands for any placement.
The Roofing Brief scored 5 certified roofing contractors serving the Sherman metro on a published, reproducible formula, then researched each of the top five individually to confirm its record. Sherman and Denison share one county and one hail record, 181 reports in a decade with stones up to 2.5 inches that broke windows near Howe in September 2025, but they run different building codes, permit fees and contractor checks over housing of very different ages. Texas licenses no roofers, so the cities’ own registers are the main check. Six manufacturer-certified roofers with five or more reviews appear in the directory for the area; one publishes no Grayson County coverage and is excluded, and five are ranked.
What a Sherman roof is up against
Texas has no state roofing licence; a 2025 bill to create one (HB 3344) died before a House vote. The only exam-based credential is the voluntary licence of the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas, issued to individuals, and none of the ranked firms holds one. Texas Insurance Code 707.002 makes you pay your own deductible, any roofing contract of $1,000 or more expected to be paid from insurance must say so in 12-point bold type, and a contractor that waives or rebates the deductible commits a Class B misdemeanour (Business and Commerce Code 27.02). A contractor may not act as your public adjuster (Insurance Code 4102.163).
Sherman requires a permit for every residential or commercial reroof, $75, with a $250 charge if work starts first. Under Ordinance 6691 roofing contractors must register with the city each year, free, with at least $300,000 of liability insurance naming the city, and no permit goes to an unregistered firm; owners working on their own homestead are exempt. Sherman publishes its register of roofers as a PDF, so you can check a firm by name.
Denison lists replacing a roof among work needing a permit, charges $100 for a residential reroof permit and $50 for a one-year contractor registration, and builds to the 2024 International Residential Code; Sherman adopted the 2021 codes in February 2024. Texas’s door-to-door sales law gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel a contract signed at home.
Across 2016 to 2025 Grayson County logged 181 hail reports, 144 of an inch or larger, 93 thunderstorm wind reports and five tornado segments, with $3.03 million of recorded damage. On 21 March 2022 an EF2 near Cedar Mills destroyed 53 structures and killed one person before crossing Lake Texoma. In Sherman 47.3 percent of occupied homes are rented, and Denison’s median home was built in 1967.

What they actually do. Residential reroofing, standing seam and stone-coated metal, cedar shingle, commercial TPO, and storm and insurance work.
Why it ranks here. The top-scoring firm in the metro by a wide margin: a long-established Sherman roofer on US 82 at GAF’s President’s Club tier, with 418 reviews averaging 4.9 and Owens Corning Preferred status as well. Its service area covers Sherman, Denison and the surrounding towns. Its history is murky in places: its site says it was established in 1937 and BBB says 1959, the current company was formed in 2017, and BBB holds a second, newer file at the same address naming a different contact, with no explanation. It did not appear under its own name on Sherman’s January 2026 roofer register, though that list may be incomplete. Its site says it is licensed in Texas, where no roofing licence exists.
Best fit for: Sherman and Denison homeowners who want the largest local review record and metal or cedar options.
What we would want clarified. Confirm it is on Sherman’s current roofer register before work in the city, and ask about the second BBB file and who now runs the business. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (903) 465-7677, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
2. Get Roofed: TRB Score 87.7
Get Roofed is based in Denison, TX, in business since 2020, led by Casey Shires, President; Cody Jason Slagle, General Manager, BBB accredited since 17 February 2020, A+ rating, one complaint in three years, and holds President’s Club standing on the GAF certification registry.
Certifications held: President’s Club (GAF), Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. Certification by more than one manufacturer is uncommon and requires meeting each programme’s separate standards for insurance, training and track record.

- Get Roofed LLC, chartered 27 January 2020, active.. Texas Comptroller franchise tax data
What they actually do. Residential replacement, metal, tile and coatings, commercial TPO, EPDM and PVC, and storm and insurance claims.
Why it ranks here. The only ranked firm based in Denison, on W Morton Street, at GAF’s President’s Club tier with 86 reviews averaging 4.9 and Owens Corning Preferred status. BBB and the state agree it was formed in January 2020, and BBB has accredited it since then with one answered complaint. It serves Denison, Sherman and the Lake Texoma area and also works southern Oklahoma, where its site shows a licence number we did not check.
Best fit for: Denison and Lake Texoma homeowners who want a local firm with two manufacturer credentials.
What we would want clarified. A young business, trading since 2020; for a Sherman address, ask for its Sherman roofer registration, as it was not on the city’s January 2026 list. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (903) 465-7663, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
3. RoofHero: TRB Score 74.6
RoofHero is based in Mckinney, TX, led by Catherine Brenneman, owner, BBB accredited since 9 March 2020, A+ rating, one complaint in three years, and holds Master Elite standing on the GAF certification registry.

- Family owned and based in McKinney; crews work throughout Collin County; city pages for McKinney, Allen, Frisco, Prosper, Anna and Melissa; offers FORTIFIED roofs.. Company website
What they actually do. Residential replacement, FORTIFIED roofs, hail and storm claims, and gutters.
Why it ranks here. A McKinney roofer at GAF Master Elite with 193 reviews averaging 4.9 and BBB accreditation since 2020. Its claim on the metro is mixed: BBB lists Grayson County and its company’s mailing address is in Sherman, but its own site says its crews work throughout Collin County and names no Grayson County town. It offers FORTIFIED roof installation, the wind standard some insurers discount. Its site says 2012 and BBB and the state say 2014, so we give no founding year.
Best fit for: Homeowners in the south of the county, toward Van Alstyne and Gunter, who want a FORTIFIED roof.
What we would want clarified. Based in Collin County, about 30 miles away, with a website that does not name Sherman or Denison; confirm it will take your job and register with the city. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.

4. Galt Construction: TRB Score 53.6
Galt Construction is based in Van Alstyne, TX, led by Larry Norrell, owner; Bobby Norrell, partner, BBB accredited since 15 June 2026, A+ rating, no complaints, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.

- Galt Construction Inc., chartered September 2009, active, with a Whitewright address in Grayson County.. Texas Comptroller franchise tax data
What they actually do. Residential, commercial and multi-family roofing, and insurance claims.
Why it ranks here. A Norrell family company with a Grayson County footing, a Van Alstyne mailing address and a Whitewright registered address, and 31 GAF reviews averaging 4.5. BBB’s service area includes Grayson County, but its own website markets to McKinney, Plano, Frisco and other Collin and Dallas county suburbs and names no Grayson town. Its BBB accreditation is only months old, and only BBB gives a start date, so we record no founding year.
Best fit for: Van Alstyne and Whitewright homeowners who want a family firm with a Grayson County address.
What we would want clarified. Its 4.5 rating is the lowest of the five, its BBB accreditation dates only from June 2026, and its website does not name Sherman or Denison. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (888) 962-9449, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
5. Tallent Roofing: TRB Score 53.5
Tallent Roofing is based in Melissa, TX, in business since 1987, led by Kenneth Tallent, President, BBB accredited since 8 November 1999, A+ rating, no complaints, and holds Certified standing on the GAF certification registry.
| Score component | Points | Max |

- Accredited since November 1999 with an A+ rating; business started 1987, incorporated 2001; service area includes Grayson County; no complaints.. BBB business profile
- Founded in 1987 by Kenneth Tallent, headquartered in Melissa with offices in Lubbock and Alpine; serves McKinney, Allen, Frisco and the greater North Texas area.. Company website
What they actually do. Residential and commercial roofing, storm and insurance claims, and remodelling.
Why it ranks here. A Melissa roofer founded in 1987 by Kenneth Tallent, BBB and its own site agreeing, with BBB accreditation since 1999 and no complaints: the longest clean record among the ranked firms. It has 77 GAF reviews averaging 4.6. BBB’s service area includes Grayson County, but its site names Collin County cities and North Texas generally rather than Sherman or Denison, and its office is in Collin County, about 24 miles away. It also runs offices in Lubbock and Alpine.
Best fit for: Homeowners who want a roofer with nearly four decades of trading and a long, clean BBB record.
What we would want clarified. Based outside the metro in Collin County and does not name Sherman or Denison on its site; confirm it will take your job and register with the city. We publish this because a ranking that only prints the flattering findings is an advertisement, not an assessment.
Verify the certification yourself on the GAF registry listing. The number carried on that listing is (972) 562-9100, which is the registry’s contact line and is often a directory tracking number rather than the contractor’s own: take the number from the company’s own website and compare the two.
Other roofers serving Sherman and Denison
Five certified firms are ranked here. These three are based in Grayson County with an Owens Corning Platinum credential. They are not scored and we are not recommending them. Two other local roofers we checked show forfeited state business status, so we left them out.
| Company | Verified credential |
|---|---|
| Abel Aleman Roofing Co. | On Sherman’s roofer register (RF-000086-2025); Owens Corning Platinum Preferred; on S Sam Rayburn Fwy in Sherman, trading since 1958; BBB A+, not accredited, no complaints. |
| Cook DFW Roofing & Restorations | RCAT residential roofing licence 01-0646 held by Daniel Cook, the only RCAT licence we found among local firms; Owens Corning Platinum Preferred; based in Van Alstyne; BBB accredited since 2020 at A+. |
| Texoma Roofing and Construction | Owens Corning Platinum Preferred on N Travis St in Sherman; BBB accredited since 2015 at A+, trading since 2009. Not on Sherman’s January 2026 register, so ask for its registration. |

The 144 inch-plus hail reports behind a Sherman roof
Aggregate hail counts tell you very little about a specific roof. These are the individual events: every severe-weather report logged by the National Weather Service across the 1 county of the Sherman-Denison, TX statistical area over ten years, with the dates, the stone sizes and the towns they landed on. Over that decade the metro logged 181 hail reports, 93 severe thunderstorm and high wind reports and 5 tornadoes. Reported property damage from hail, severe wind and tornado over that decade totalled $3.0 million; flood and winter-storm losses are counted separately and are not included.

The biggest hail to fall on Sherman in a decade
| Date | Stone size | Reported near | County |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 May 2024 | 2.5 in | Luella | Grayson |
| 21 September 2025 | 2.5 in | Howe | Grayson |
| 21 September 2025 | 2.5 in | Luella | Grayson |
| 23 June 2023 | 2.5 in | Gunter | Grayson |
| 9 May 2024 | 2.0 in | Perrin Afb | Grayson |
| 21 April 2017 | 2.0 in | Collinsville | Grayson |
The largest stone on record for this metro fell on 9 May 2024 near Luella, measured at 2.5 inches. That is hen-egg sized. Two inches is the threshold at which insurers expect functional damage and full replacement claims.
Wind. The strongest thunderstorm gust logged in the metro was 78 knots, about 90 mph, near Sherman on 26 April 2016. Asphalt shingles begin lifting at roughly 67 mph when they are correctly nailed, and considerably below that when they are not.
Tornadoes. 5 tornadoes touched down in these counties over the decade, the strongest rated EF2 near Cedar Mills on 21 March 2022.
What the National Weather Service wrote about it
The NWS logs a written account of each severe-weather episode. This is its description of the 7 March 2016 event near Whitesboro, reproduced verbatim:
The National Weather Service survey team estimated winds up to 80 MPH caused damage in Whitesboro, TX. This was after reports of significant wind damage from the storm, including an RV blown onto a car and a Tractor Trailer overturned.
That is the kind of damage a roof in this metro has to be specified against, described by the agency that recorded it rather than by a contractor selling the repair.
When it happens. Severe weather reports cluster in May (71), March (60), April (48). The worst years on record were 2025 (55), 2024 (45), 2023 (39). If you are scheduling non-urgent work in Sherman, the months outside that window are when crews are least stretched and least likely to be triaging emergency callouts ahead of your job.
Source: NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, Storm Events Database, county-level detail files 2016 to 2025, filtered to the counties of this statistical area by The Roofing Brief. Damage figures are as reported to the NWS and undercount insured losses.
What to do with this. Sherman sees enough damaging hail that a Class 4 impact-rated shingle is worth pricing, though not automatically worth buying. Get both quotes and weigh the premium against any insurance discount.
Twin cities, two rulebooks
Sherman and Denison sit ten miles apart in Grayson County and take the same storms, but a roof inside one city’s limits is regulated differently from a roof inside the other’s.
Sherman’s rules are the stricter on contractors. Every residential or commercial reroof needs a $75 permit, and starting without one costs the contractor $250. Ordinance 6691 makes it unlawful for an unregistered firm to do regulated work, requires roofing contractors to register as roofers with at least $300,000 of liability cover naming the city, and sets registrations to expire each 31 December. The city publishes its register; the January 2026 edition lists 45 roofer registrations by holder and date, though every entry dates from March 2025 onward, which may reflect a new permitting system rather than the full roster.
Denison is newer on code and older on housing. It enforces the 2024 International Residential Code, a cycle ahead of Sherman’s 2021 adoption, charges $100 for a residential reroof permit and $50 for a contractor registration. Its median home was built in 1967, against 1980 in Sherman and 1985 for the county, while 18.8 percent of the county’s homes have gone up since 2010.
The hazard is shared. Grayson County logged 144 hail reports of an inch or more in the decade, more than half of all its hail reports in 2023 to 2025, though that partly reflects more spotters. On 21 September 2025 hail of 2.25 to 2.5 inches fell for eight to ten minutes southeast of Howe, breaking windows and damaging roofs. Tornadoes add to it: the Howe tornado of April 2016 damaged about 20 homes, and the Cedar Mills EF2 of March 2022 destroyed 53 structures.
For a homeowner the practical step depends on the address. In Sherman, check the roofer is on the city’s register before you sign and that it pulls the $75 permit; in Denison, ask for its city registration and the $100 permit. In either city, an insurance-funded contract must carry the deductible notice, and no roofer may offer to cover your deductible or deal with your insurer for you.

Three things to confirm before work starts in Sherman
There is no state roofing licence in TX. Texas does not issue or require a state roofing contractor licence. There is no state exam, no state licence number to check, and no state board that can discipline a roofer.
The Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) runs a voluntary Licensed Roofing Contractor program. The applicant must have been a principal of a Texas-based roofing company with a physical address for at least two continuous years, pass a business and safety exam and a roofing exam at 70% or better, carry workers’ compensation or an equivalent plan or file as a nonsubscriber with the Texas Division of Workers’ Compensation, and hold at least $300,000 general liability insurance for residential work ($500,000 for commercial) or show that the firm can obtain a $100,000 surety bond, property bond or letter of credit. The licence renews yearly with 8 hours of continuing education. A 2025 bill to create a state reroofing licence (HB 3344) did not pass.
That absence is the most important fact on this page. Where a state issues no credential, a manufacturer certification that can be revoked is the only quality signal a homeowner can actually check, which is why this ranking is built on certification rather than star ratings.
Check here: RCAT licensed contractor lookup. Many Texas cities still require roofers to register with the municipality and pull a permit, so check with the city building department where the work will happen.
Four checks to run before you sign anything, in any state.
- Verify certification at the source. Use the GAF verification tool rather than trusting a badge image on a company website.
- Get the certificate of insurance from the insurer, not the contractor, and confirm general liability and workers compensation are both active on the day work starts.
- Confirm who pulls the permit. If a contractor asks you to pull it as the homeowner, that moves liability onto you. Decline.
- Get warranty terms in writing before any deposit, and check the manufacturer warranty being promised actually requires the certification tier the contractor holds.
How deep the Sherman certified market really is
5 certified roofing contractors serve the principal cities of the Sherman-Denison, TX statistical area, of which 2 hold the top President’s Club tier. The pool carries 805 customer reviews between them at a mean rating of 4.767. The statistical area had a 2024 population of 150,532, a change of 11.02% against the 2020 census base, per the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2024 estimates.

How these Sherman rankings were produced
Every contractor in the Sherman-Denison, TX pool was scored out of 100 on four published components: certification tier, a Bayesian adjusted rating, review depth and distance from the metro centre. In this metro that meant scoring 5 certified contractors, of whom 2 hold President’s Club standing and 1 Master Elite, against a metro mean rating of 4.767. The top five were then researched individually against Better Business Bureau records, state licence registers and manufacturer directories. Good and bad findings are published together, and no contractor paid for a place here.
Set aside in Sherman. A contractor that would otherwise have scored into the top five was removed for the reason stated. The score is computed from public data, but where the research pass finds evidence undermining an input to that score, the score is set aside.
- Wortham Bros Inc, which scored 60.9: Excluded on service area. A long-established McKinney roofer, BBB accredited since 1992 and Owens Corning Platinum, but its published service area lists 54 cities across Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio and Houston and names none in Grayson County.
The full method, the weightings, what the GAF certification tiers actually mean, who is eligible to be ranked and what we do not claim are all set out on our roofer ranking methodology page. Last updated: October 2026. Scoring run: 2026-10-08. Corrections go to the editor and are actioned on verification.
Sherman roofing questions, answered
Who is the best roofer in Sherman, TX?
Lankford Roofing of Sherman, TX scores highest in the Sherman metro on The Roofing Brief Contractor Score, at 95.4 out of 100 as of October 2026. It holds President’s Club certification with a 4.9 rating across 418 reviews. Highest-scoring is not the same as best fit for your specific job, and the four companies behind it score within 41.9 points.
How many certified roofing contractors serve Sherman?
5 contractors on the GAF certification registry serve the principal cities of the Sherman-Denison, TX statistical area as of October 2026, of which 2 hold President’s Club status.
How much damaging hail does Sherman get?
The Sherman-Denison, TX statistical area recorded 144 hail reports of 1 inch or larger and 11 of 2 inches or larger between 2016 and 2025 in the NOAA Storm Events Database. The largest hailstone reported measured 2.5 inches.
Did any contractor pay to appear on this list?
No. The Roofing Brief takes no placement fees, no lead fees and no affiliate commission from any roofing contractor. Ranking comes entirely from the published formula applied to public registry data, followed by an individual research pass on the top five.
What was the worst hailstorm in Sherman in the last ten years?
The largest hailstone logged by the National Weather Service in the Sherman-Denison, TX statistical area between 2016 and 2025 measured 2.5 inches, reported near Luella on 9 May 2024. That is hen-egg sized. Two inches is the threshold at which insurers expect functional damage and full replacement claims. Across the decade the metro recorded 181 hail reports. Severe-weather reports in the Sherman-Denison, TX statistical area cluster in May, March, April, on the NOAA record for 2016 to 2025. Scheduling discretionary work away from that window tends to get you a better crew and a faster start, because nobody is juggling emergency callouts.
Do roofers need a licence in TX?
What should I check before hiring a roofer in Sherman?
Many Texas cities still require roofers to register with the municipality and pull a permit, so check with the city building department where the work will happen.
Twin cities, two rulebooks?
Sherman and Denison sit ten miles apart in Grayson County and take the same storms, but a roof inside one city’s limits is regulated differently from a roof inside the other’s.
Is Sherman a hard market to find a good roofer in?
Sherman and Denison share one county and one hail record, 181 reports in a decade with stones up to 2.5 inches that broke windows near Howe in September 2025, but they run different building codes, permit fees and contractor checks over housing of very different ages. Texas licenses no roofers, so the cities’ own registers are the main check. Six manufacturer-certified roofers with five or more reviews appear in the directory for the area; one publishes no Grayson County coverage and is excluded, and five are ranked.
