GAF Royal Sovereign is GAF’s only 3-tab asphalt shingle: a 12 by 36 inch fiberglass strip laid at a 5-inch exposure, three bundles to the square, sold with a 25-year limited warranty that is non-prorated for the first 5 years and covers wind only up to 60 mph. It is still in production in October 2026, but GAF’s current brochure offers it in just two colors and not at all in the western states.
This is a product review of one shingle line. For the 3-tab category as a whole (how strip shingles compare with architectural, and what the whole class costs), see our 3-tab shingles guide. Here we stay on Royal Sovereign itself: what GAF’s data sheet, installation instructions and April 2026 warranty document actually say, what a bundle listed for at dealers we could read in October 2026, and how it lines up against the three other national 3-tab lines.
Key numbers at a glance
The figures most people searching for GAF Royal Sovereign want are size, coverage, warranty terms, wind coverage and price. Each row comes from a GAF document, a dealer listing or our own cost report, and prices vary by market and date.

What is GAF Royal Sovereign?
GAF Royal Sovereign is a traditional 3-tab, fiberglass-mat asphalt strip shingle that GAF describes as “America’s #1-selling 3-tab shingle” and says it has sold for more than 50 years. It is GAF’s entry-level residential shingle, and GAF’s warranty comparison guide lists it as the only qualifying shingle in its 3-tab category, on a 25-year rather than Lifetime warranty.
Each strip has three flat tabs separated by cutouts, a factory self-seal adhesive line, and GAF’s Color Lock ceramic-fired granules. GAF markets it with its Advanced Protection shingle technology and Dura Grip adhesive. One point some web pages get wrong: Royal Sovereign is a product line, not a color option used across architectural shingles. Its colors are Charcoal and Weathered Gray in GAF’s 2025 brochure.
Royal Sovereign specifications from GAF’s data sheet
Royal Sovereign comes in an English size (12 x 36 inches, 5-inch exposure, 79 pieces per square) and, historically, a metric size (13 1/4 x 39 3/8 inches, 5 5/8-inch exposure, 64 pieces per square). Both run three bundles to the square. GAF does not publish a weight per square on the data sheet or product page, so check the bundle wrapper if load matters.
| Spec | English size | Metric size | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | 12 x 36 in | 13 1/4 x 39 3/8 in | GAF data sheets (English 10/18/2016; metric file modified 2021) |

| Weight per square | Not published by GAF | GAF data sheet and product page | |
For a rough comparison only, CertainTeed’s technical data sheet lists its XT 25 3-tab at about 190 to 203 lb per square. Our shingles per bundle guide covers how piece counts and coverage differ by shingle type.
What the Class F and Class H wind ratings mean
Royal Sovereign’s ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H ratings are laboratory classifications, not warranty promises. GAF’s product page says the shingle “passes the industry’s two toughest wind tests: ASTM’s 110 mph and 150 mph wind tests” under controlled laboratory conditions, and in the same footnote says Royal Sovereign shingles “are warranted to withstand wind speeds up to 60 mph.”
The gap matters when you compare bids. The lab classes help a shingle meet code wind requirements; the 60 mph figure is what GAF will actually pay against, and only for 5 years. Architectural Lifetime shingles in GAF’s line carry 110 mph coverage, or 130 mph with special installation, according to the same warranty document.
Royal Sovereign warranty: what the April 2026 GAF document says
Royal Sovereign is covered by the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty (document RESWT160L-0426). It gives 25 years against manufacturing defects, with the first 5 years non-prorated, wind coverage to 60 mph for 5 years, and a 10-year algae warranty only on StainGuard-labeled packages. Tear-off, disposal and workmanship are not covered.
| Coverage | Term | Full (non-prorated) period | What the document says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing defects, shingles | 25 years | 5 years | During Smart Choice: reasonable labor to repair or re-cover plus replacement shingles. After: material only, reduced for use |
| Wind | 5 years | Not applicable | Up to 60 mph (96 km/h); pays to replace blown-off shingles and hand-seal unsealed ones |
| Algae (StainGuard-labeled only) | 10 years | 1 year | Cleaning or replacement in year 1, prorated afterwards |
| GAF accessories without Lifetime shingles | 25 years | 5 years | Ridge cap, starter, leak barrier, deck protection, Cobra ventilation |
| Tear-off and disposal | Not covered | “GAF will not pay to tear off your GAF Products, or to dispose of them” | |
| Workmanship | Not covered | Rests on your contractor’s own warranty | |
How proration works on a Royal Sovereign claim
After the 5-year Smart Choice period, GAF stops paying labor and reduces its material contribution by the share of the warranty term already used: months since installation divided by months in the term. For a 25-year warranty, the term is 300 months. For the same terms side by side across every major brand, see our 25 year shingles compared across brands.
Worked example (Roofing Brief arithmetic from the warranty’s formula): a defect claim at year 12 is 144 months in, and 144 / 300 = 48%. GAF would then provide about 52% of the reasonable cost of replacement shingles and nothing toward labor. A StainGuard algae claim at year 4 runs on the 120-month algae term: 48 / 120 = 40%, so GAF’s contribution falls to about 60% of the cleaning or replacement cost, whichever is less.
Transfers and non-residential buildings
The warranty can be transferred once, and the second owner must notify GAF in writing within one year of the sale. A transfer inside the first 5 years keeps full coverage. A transfer after year 5 shrinks coverage to a two-year window. On buildings other than individually owned single-family homes, GAF caps its liability at $500 per square before proration.
Why GAF’s web table and the warranty document differ on wind
GAF’s online warranty comparison guide lists a 15-year wind warranty term for 3-tab shingles, while the April 2026 legal document lists 5 years for Royal Sovereign at 60 mph. The warranty document is the contract text that sets coverage, so keep a copy of the version in force on your installation date and ask GAF to confirm in writing if the difference could affect a claim.
Can Royal Sovereign get System Plus or Golden Pledge coverage?
No. GAF’s enhanced warranties (GAF Roofing System, System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge) all start from installing a GAF Lifetime shingle plus at least 3, 4 or 5 qualifying accessories. Royal Sovereign carries a 25-year warranty, not Lifetime, and it does not appear on GAF’s list of qualifying Lifetime shingles (literature RESWT216).
In practice that means a Royal Sovereign roof cannot carry GAF-backed workmanship coverage, extended non-prorated periods, or the WindProven wind warranty, even if a Master Elite contractor installs it. If those matter to you, compare against GAF’s Timberline line in our GAF Timberline HDZ review.
Is GAF Royal Sovereign discontinued?
GAF Royal Sovereign is not discontinued as of October 2026. GAF’s product page is live, the April 2026 warranty lists it, and GAF printed a new brochure insert in 2025. What has changed is the range: GAF’s 2025 brochure shows only Charcoal and Weathered Gray, and its footnote says “Royal Sovereign not available in region one,” the western states.
GAF’s regional map shades region 1 as the West, from the Pacific coast states through Montana, Utah and Arizona. Regions 2 through 5 show both colors: region 2 covers the Midwest, Northeast and mid-Atlantic; region 3 a central band from Wyoming and Colorado down to Texas, Louisiana and Alabama; region 4 Georgia and South Carolina; and region 5 Florida. GAF’s older metric data sheet once listed a metric-size Royal Sovereign for the West, which is the market the current brochure now excludes.
| Royal Sovereign color | GAF 2025 brochure | GAF 2016 English data sheet |
|---|---|---|
| Charcoal | Yes, regions 2 to 5 | Listed |
| Weathered Gray | Yes, regions 2 to 5 | Listed |
| Ash Brown, Autumn Brown, Cypress Tan, Golden Cedar, Nickel Gray, Russet Red, Sandrift, Silver Lining, Slate, Summer Sage, White | Not shown | Listed |
Some legacy colors still turn up in dealer stock. Woodson Lumber in central Texas still listed Royal Sovereign Golden Cedar, flagged in stock, in October 2026. Treat any color outside Charcoal and Weathered Gray as limited stock and confirm with the supplier before you plan a repair around it. Our GAF shingle colors guide covers the rest of GAF’s palette.
How much do GAF Royal Sovereign shingles cost?
GAF Royal Sovereign listed for $32.00 to $45.07 per unit at three dealer sites we could read in October 2026, or about $96 to $135 per square at three bundles per square. Installed, a 3-tab roof runs $4 to $6 per square foot in our 2026 Roofing Cost Report, which is $400 to $600 per square.
| Dealer (listing seen Oct 2026) | Location | Listing | Listed price | Per square at 3 units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASO Roofing Supply | Houston, TX | GAF Royal Sovereign Charcoal (listing text: 33.33 sq ft per bundle, 26 pieces) | $32.00 each | $96.00 |
| OS Lumber & Supply | Ocean Springs, MS | Charcoal GAF Royal Sovereign 3 tab shingle | $38.41 each | $115.23 |
| Guido Materials | San Antonio, TX | Royal Sovereign GAF 25 Year 3-Tab Weathered Grey | $45.07 each | $135.21 |
The dealers sell shingles by the bundle, and only the ASO listing states the bundle coverage outright, so the per-square column assumes “each” means one bundle. Home Depot and Lowe’s both carry Royal Sovereign listings, but their pages blocked automated reading, so we did not use their prices. Pro distributors such as QXO show pricing only after login.
Royal Sovereign roof cost, worked example
Roofing Brief estimate for a roof with 2,000 square feet of roof surface (20 squares), using the cost report’s 3-tab range: 2,000 x $4 to $6 = $8,000 to $12,000 installed. For the shingles alone, add 10% waste (22 squares, 66 bundles): 66 x $32.00 to $45.07 = about $2,112 to $2,975. The rest is labor, tear-off, underlayment, starter, ridge, flashing and disposal, which vary by market and roof complexity.
Royal Sovereign vs Owens Corning Supreme vs CertainTeed XT 25 vs IKO Marathon Plus AR
All four national 3-tab lines carry a 25-year limited warranty, a 60 mph wind warranty and a UL 790 Class A fire rating, so the real differences are size, non-prorated terms, algae conditions and whether the line can join the maker’s extended system warranty. IKO Marathon Plus AR is the only metric-size line of the four.

On a same-store basis, and assuming the ASO “IKO Marathon” bundle covers IKO’s published 32.3 sq ft, $30.00 per bundle works out to about $92.88 per square (100 / 32.3 x $30.00), against $96.00 for Royal Sovereign.
The Owens Corning difference is the one most buyers miss. Owens Corning’s warranty FAQ says that on a roof with Supreme shingles, its Hip and Ridge product is not required “as long as the total number of required accessories is met” for its System Protection, Platinum and Preferred warranties, which indicates Supreme can sit inside those programs. GAF’s equivalent programs exclude Royal Sovereign. Read each manufacturer’s current warranty before relying on either point.
Can you cut Royal Sovereign for hip and ridge or starter strips?
For hip and ridge, yes. GAF’s Royal Sovereign installation instructions allow either GAF ridge cap shingles or hip and ridge pieces cut from full Royal Sovereign strips, three 12 x 12 inch pieces per strip. For starter, GAF’s instructions say to use GAF starter strip shingles at the eaves and rakes, and the data sheets name Pro-Start and WeatherBlocker.
Cutting your own ridge pieces follows this sequence from GAF’s English-size instructions (updated 10/14):
- Cut each full strip at the tab lines into three 12 x 12 inch hip and ridge pieces, tapering the cut edges for appearance.
- Bend each piece centered over the hip or ridge.
- Lay the pieces with at least a 5-inch exposure, with the laps facing away from the prevailing wind.
- Nail each piece 5 5/8 inches above the butt and 1 inch from the edge.
- Cover the exposed nail heads with roof cement.
Two warranty notes apply. GAF’s warranty table gives its manufactured ridge caps their own wind lines (Seal-A-Ridge is listed at 90 mph), separate from the 60 mph shingle line. And GAF’s instructions recommend its starter strips at the rakes for best performance; they are required for enhanced coverage on certain other GAF shingles, but Royal Sovereign has no enhanced wind tier, so here the reason is edge performance.
Using Royal Sovereign to repair or match an older 3-tab roof
Royal Sovereign is a common repair choice for an existing English-size 3-tab roof because its 12 x 36 inch strip and 5-inch exposure match the old courses. It will not line up with a metric 3-tab roof: a 5 5/8 inch exposure gains 5/8 inch per course, which is 6 1/4 inches of drift over ten courses (Roofing Brief arithmetic).
- Measure the exposed height of an existing course. Five inches means English size; 5 5/8 inches means metric.
- Look for a leftover bundle wrapper in the garage or attic to confirm the brand, line and color.
- Check whether that color is still sold in your region. Outside Charcoal and Weathered Gray, assume limited stock.
- Expect a visible color difference even on an exact match, because the old roof’s granules have weathered.
- Nail 5 5/8 inches from the bottom of the shingle, above the cutouts and out of the self-seal line: four nails standard, six where code requires.
- In cold weather, hand-seal each tab with two quarter-sized dabs of shingle tab adhesive about 1 inch from the end and 1 inch up from the bottom, per GAF’s instructions.
GAF’s instructions also allow Royal Sovereign on slopes from 2:12, with two layers of underlayment required below 4:12. For the full size chart across brands, see our guide to English vs metric shingle sizes.
Should you choose GAF Royal Sovereign?
Royal Sovereign makes sense where low material cost and a flat 3-tab look matter more than warranty depth: rentals, garages, outbuildings, and repairs to existing English-size 3-tab roofs. It is a weaker fit where you want wind coverage above 60 mph, GAF-backed workmanship coverage, or a color other than Charcoal or Weathered Gray.
| Your situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Rental, shed, detached garage on a tight budget | Royal Sovereign is a reasonable fit; confirm it is stocked locally |
| Patching an English-size 3-tab roof | Royal Sovereign or another 12 x 36 inch line in the closest color |
| Patching a metric-size 3-tab roof | A metric line such as IKO Marathon Plus AR; English strips will not align |
| Home in the western states (GAF region 1) | Not sold there per GAF’s 2025 brochure; compare other brands |
| Want more than 60 mph wind coverage | A GAF Lifetime architectural shingle (110 mph, or 130 mph with special installation) |
| Want a manufacturer-backed workmanship warranty | A Lifetime shingle under System Plus, Silver Pledge or Golden Pledge |
| Humid climate with algae streaking | Buy only StainGuard-labeled packages, or the algae warranty does not apply |
What is the highest quality GAF shingle?
By GAF’s own warranty structure, its Lifetime shingles sit above Royal Sovereign, and Timberline UHDZ gets the longest terms in the April 2026 warranty document: a Lifetime limited warranty, a 10-year non-prorated period, 130 mph coverage with special installation, and a 30-year algae term with StainGuard Plus PRO. GAF’s designer lines (Camelot II, Grand Sequoia, Slateline, Woodland) are also Lifetime shingles. “Highest quality” still depends on climate, budget and installer. Our review of every current GAF shingle line sets out the full warranty ladder.
What roof shingles should you stay away from?
Rather than a list of brands, avoid mismatches. Skip any 3-tab, Royal Sovereign included, if your area sees frequent winds above its 60 mph warranty. Avoid mixing English and metric strips on one roof. Avoid unlabeled packages in algae-prone climates if you want algae coverage, and avoid a line your local suppliers do not stock if you expect to need matching repairs later.
Frequently asked questions
Is GAF Royal Sovereign discontinued?
No. As of October 2026, GAF still lists Royal Sovereign on its website, includes it in its April 2026 Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty, and printed a 2025 brochure insert for it. Availability has narrowed: GAF’s brochure shows only Charcoal and Weathered Gray and says the shingle is not available in region one, the western states. Older colors may survive only as dealer stock.
What is GAF Royal Sovereign?
GAF Royal Sovereign is GAF’s 3-tab asphalt shingle: a 12 x 36 inch fiberglass strip with a 5-inch exposure, 79 pieces and three bundles per square. It carries a 25-year limited warranty with 5 years of non-prorated coverage, a 60 mph wind warranty, a UL 790 Class A fire rating, and ASTM D3161 Class F and D7158 Class H wind classifications.
What colors does GAF Royal Sovereign come in?
GAF’s 2025 Royal Sovereign brochure shows two colors, Charcoal and Weathered Gray, available in GAF regions 2 through 5. GAF’s 2016 data sheet listed thirteen, including Golden Cedar, Slate, Silver Lining, Ash Brown and White. Some dealers still list legacy colors, so confirm stock with a local supplier before planning a repair around one.
How many bundles of Royal Sovereign are in a square?
Three. GAF’s data sheet lists 3 bundles and 79 pieces per square for the English-size shingle, so each bundle covers about 33.3 square feet. A dealer listing describes the bundle as 26 pieces. At four nails per shingle a square takes 316 nails, or 474 where local code requires six nails per shingle.
What is the wind rating of GAF Royal Sovereign?
Royal Sovereign passes ASTM D3161 Class F (tested at 110 mph) and ASTM D7158 Class H (150 mph) in the lab, but GAF’s warranty covers wind only up to 60 mph, for 5 years. Unlike GAF’s Lifetime shingles, the April 2026 warranty lists no higher wind tier for six-nail or special installation on Royal Sovereign.
Does GAF Royal Sovereign qualify for Golden Pledge or System Plus?
No. GAF’s Roofing System, System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge warranties require a GAF Lifetime shingle plus qualifying accessories, and Royal Sovereign carries a 25-year warranty. A Royal Sovereign roof stays on the base Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty, which excludes tear-off, disposal and workmanship, so installer workmanship coverage comes only from the contractor.
How much does a bundle of GAF Royal Sovereign cost?
Dealer listings we could read in October 2026 showed $32.00 (ASO Roofing Supply, Houston), $38.41 (OS Lumber, Ocean Springs, Mississippi) and $45.07 (Guido Materials, San Antonio), or about $96 to $135 per square. Prices vary by region and date. Installed 3-tab roofs run about $4 to $6 per square foot in our 2026 cost report.
