3-tab shingles are the flat, single-layer asphalt shingle that gets its name from the three evenly cut tabs on each strip. They are the cheapest asphalt roof you can buy, they last about 20 years, and their wind warranty covers only 60 mph for the first 5 years. Home Depot listed GAF Royal Sovereign at $39.47 per bundle on October 9, 2026, and three bundles cover a 100 sq ft square on English-size lines. What are 3-tab shingles?
A 3-tab shingle is a single-layer asphalt strip, most often about 12 inches tall and 36 inches wide (some lines come in a larger metric size, covered below), with two slots cut into the bottom edge that create three equal tabs. Each strip is one flat layer of asphalt over a fiberglass mat, topped with ceramic-coated mineral granules. Once installed, the tabs read as three separate shingles, so a finished roof looks like uniform rows of flat rectangles.
The flat, uniform profile is what separates 3-tab from architectural shingles, also called laminate shingles or dimensional shingles. Architectural shingles bond two layers together to build a thicker, shadowed, shake-like look. A 3-tab has one layer and no added dimension, which is why it weighs less (190 to 203 lb per square for CertainTeed XT 25 against 217 to 229 lb for CertainTeed Landmark), costs less, and reads as the more basic roof from the curb. Both types are tested to the same product standard, ASTM D3462, which 2021 IRC Section R905.2.4 requires of all asphalt shingles. The terms 3 tab roofing shingles, three tab shingles, three-tab, and strip shingles all describe the same product.
3-tab shingle specs: size, weight, and bundle coverage
The traditional English-size 3-tab shingle is 36 inches long and 12 inches tall, installed with a 5-inch exposure per GAF’s Royal Sovereign specifications, and packaged three bundles to the square. Sizes are not uniform across brands. TAMKO’s Elite Glass-Seal data sheet (rev. 01/19/2026) lists a 12-1/4 by 36 inch shingle with a 5-1/8 inch exposure, 26 shingles per bundle and 78 per square. IKO’s Marathon Plus AR specifications list a metric 39-3/8 by 13-1/4 inch shingle with a 5-5/8 inch exposure, 21 shingles covering 32.3 square feet per bundle, and 65 shingles per square, so a 100 sq ft square takes about 3.1 bundles rather than 3. GAF lists Royal Sovereign in both 12 by 36 inch (English) and 13-1/4 by 39-3/8 inch (metric) sizes, and Owens Corning’s PRI evaluation report (ER 1378E01) lists Supreme in either size depending on the plant. One roofing square covers 100 square feet, so on English-size lines each bundle covers about 33.3 square feet. CertainTeed’s XT 25 product data sheet (05/21) lists 80 shingles per square at a 5 inch exposure and puts a square at about 190 to 203 pounds, so with three bundles to the square, one bundle weighs roughly 63 to 68 pounds. That light weight is why 3-tab is easy to hand up a ladder and fast to lay, but also why it lifts in wind.

For comparison, CertainTeed’s Landmark technical data sheet (03/23) lists its architectural shingle at 217 to 229 pounds per square, depending on the plant, and designer lines run heavier: CertainTeed’s Presidential Shake data sheet (07/2011) lists about 355 pounds. Weights differ by brand and plant, so use the data sheet for the product on your quote. When you price a job by the bundle, remember the pitch multiplier: a steeper roof has more surface area than its footprint, so a 2,000 square foot house can carry 22 or more squares of roof. How long do 3-tab shingles last?
3-tab shingles last about 20 years in typical conditions, per InterNACHI’s Standard Estimated Life Expectancy Chart for Homes, even when the package carries a 25-year limited warranty. The warranty term is not a life prediction: TAMKO’s warranty states that it is difficult to predict how long shingles will last. Granule loss, curling, and cracked tabs mark the end, and hot, high-UV or poorly ventilated roofs can fall short of 20 years.
The gap between the 25-year warranty and InterNACHI’s 20-year estimate comes from mass: a single asphalt layer at 190 to 203 lb per square (CertainTeed XT 25) has less asphalt and granule to lose before the fiberglass mat shows than a 217 to 229 lb laminate. Sun-facing slopes age fastest. Once you see bare spots, widespread curling, or granules piling in the gutters, the roof is near the end. 3-tab shingle wind rating
The five major 25-year 3-tab lines carry a 60 mph wind warranty that lasts only the first 5 years, per the current GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, IKO and TAMKO warranties. None of those warranties offers a six-nail upgrade; CertainTeed’s 2025 warranty raises XT 25 to 90 mph only in Alaska. Laminated architectural lines, by contrast, carry wind warranties of 110 mph or more. The thin, flat tabs give wind more edge to catch and lift.
The warranty speed is not the code test. Under 2021 IRC Table R905.2.4.1, an ultimate design wind speed of 110 or 116 mph accepts ASTM D7158 Class D, G or H (or ASTM D3161 Class A, D or F); at 129 mph, D7158 shingles must be Class G or H; from 142 mph, D3161 shingles must be Class F; and from 168 mph, D7158 shingles must be Class H. CertainTeed’s XT 25 and IKO’s Marathon Plus AR both list Class F and Class H, so they qualify on paper everywhere. The gap is in the warranty: after year 5, wind blow-off on a 3-tab roof is your cost. 3-tab shingle material ran about $30 to $48 per bundle in retail listings seen October 9, 2026, or roughly $90 to $145 per square. Installed with labor, tear-off, underlayment, and accessories, expect about $4 to $6 per square foot, or $400 to $600 per square, per our 2026 Roofing Cost Report. Home Depot listed GAF Royal Sovereign at $39.47 per bundle that day, and contractor supply houses often price lower by the pallet.

Tear-off, underlayment, flashing and crew time are the same work for 3-tab or architectural, which is why our cost report’s installed ranges differ by only $1 to $2 per square foot ($4 to $6 against $5 to $8), or $2,000 to $4,000 on 2,000 square feet of roof. 3-tab vs architectural shingles: the 30-year cost math
Using our cost report’s installed ranges, architectural shingles cost about $2,000 to $4,000 more upfront on 2,000 square feet of roof ($10,000 to $16,000 against $8,000 to $12,000, low end to low end and high end to high end). InterNACHI’s life expectancy chart puts architectural asphalt at about 30 years against 20 for 3-tab. Over a 30-year window you buy two 3-tab roofs and one architectural roof, so the cheaper shingle usually costs more in total. This lifetime math is the single biggest reason 3-tab has lost ground. The exception is a short holding period. If you will sell or demolish inside 10 years, the lower upfront number can win because you never pay for the second replacement. 3-tab shingle brands and product lines
Each major asphalt manufacturer still lists one 3-tab line, usually as an entry-level or repair product: GAF Royal Sovereign, Owens Corning Supreme, CertainTeed XT 25, TAMKO Elite Glass-Seal, and IKO Marathon Plus AR. All five carry a 25-year limited warranty with a 60 mph wind warranty for the first 5 years. Availability is not universal: in a January 15, 2025 customer letter, Owens Corning said it was discontinuing Supreme in seven plant service areas (Brookville, Indiana; Denver; Kearny, New Jersey; Medina, Ohio; Minneapolis; Portland, Oregon; and Summit, Illinois).

Color choice is narrower than on architectural lines. A 3-tab palette runs to flat neutrals: charcoal or black, weathered wood, driftwood, silver or pewter gray, and autumn or nutmeg brown. The Owens Corning Supreme color chart, for example, keeps to a short set of solid tones with no blended granule shadows. 3-tab shingles still win in a handful of cost-driven cases where longevity and wind resistance matter less than the lowest possible material price. Outside those cases, the 30-year math and the 60 mph wind ceiling usually favor architectural. Use this shortlist to decide honestly.

- Rental or flip property. A short hold means you never pay for the second replacement, so the low upfront cost carries.
- Detached structures. Sheds, detached garages, and outbuildings where appearance and resale value barely register.
- Matching an existing 3-tab roof. A repair or partial slope where blending to the current shingle matters more than upgrading.
- Strict budget in a lower-wind area. Where the IRC ultimate design wind speed is 110 to 116 mph, any shingle classed D3161 A, D or F qualifies, but the 60 mph, 5-year wind warranty still applies.
- HOA or historic look. A few districts specifically call for the flat, uniform 3-tab appearance.
How 3-tab shingles are installed
3-tab shingles install fast because the flat strip has a fixed exposure (5 in on GAF and CertainTeed English-size lines, 5-1/8 in on TAMKO) and no pattern to align. TAMKO’s Elite Glass-Seal application instructions place the standard 4 fasteners 1 in and 12 in from each end of the strip and allow 4-inch, 5-inch or 6-inch offset methods. Nails set above the nail zone miss the shingle below and let tabs blow off.
- Install drip edge, underlayment, and ice-and-water shield per code for your climate: IRC R905.2.2 allows asphalt shingles from 2:12, with double underlayment from 2:12 up to 4:12, and R905.1.2 runs an ice barrier from the eave to 24 in inside the exterior wall line where ice dams are a known risk.
- Lay a starter strip along the eave to seal the first course of tabs.
- Set the first full course flush to the starter, then chalk lines up the slope at the exposure printed on the wrapper (5 inches on English-size shingles).
- Nail at least four fasteners per strip on the manufacturer’s nail line, the minimum in 2021 IRC Section R905.2.6, using roofing nails with a 12-gauge shank and 3/8 in head that penetrate 3/4 in into the deck (R905.2.5), or more if the manufacturer’s instructions require it. The code sets no wind-speed trigger for six nails; six-nail patterns come from the manufacturer, such as IKO’s steep-slope and high-wind pattern, or from a local code amendment.
- Offset each course by half a tab (6 inches on a 36-inch strip) so the slots never stack over each other.
- Cut and cap the ridge with matching cap shingles or field-cut 3-tab tabs.
New 3-tab roofs need sun heat or hand-sealing to activate the adhesive strip that bonds each tab down. TAMKO’s instructions require hand sealing when cold weather or blowing dust keeps the strip from sealing: 2 quarter-sized dabs of ASTM D4586 Type I adhesive under each tab, 1 in from each side and 1 in up from the bottom edge, and they warn that below 40°F the shingle edges and corners crack easily. 3-tab shingles are not discontinued across the industry, but availability is narrowing. GAF, CertainTeed, IKO and TAMKO still list a 25-year 3-tab line, while Owens Corning told customers in a January 15, 2025 letter that it was discontinuing Supreme in seven plant service areas, including Denver, Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon.
