Gutter Coil: Widths, Gauges, Feet per Coil and Prices (2026)

By The Roofing Brief Team | Last reviewed: October 2026

Gutter coil is the flat, painted metal roll that a portable gutter machine forms into seamless gutters on site. For aluminum, buy 11 3/4 in. or 11 7/8 in. coil for 5 in. K-style, 15 in. for 6 in. and 18 in. for 7 in., in .027 in. (standard) or .032 in. (heavy duty). A 350 to 425 lb full coil yields roughly 500 to 1,100 feet of gutter, and full coils were listed at $4.14 to $4.34 per pound in October 2026.

Gutter coil key numbers at a glance

These are the gutter coil figures most buyers look up first: width, gauge, alloy, coil weight, footage, price and finish warranty. Each one comes from a named manufacturer or supplier document, and prices are the public listings seen in October 2026, which can change without notice.

What is gutter coil?

Gutter coil is flat metal strip, wound into a roll and painted on one or both faces, that a roll former bends into a continuous gutter trough at the house. Most residential coil is aluminum, sold in widths matched to a gutter size and in .027 or .032 in. thickness. Copper and painted or Galvalume steel coil are sold in the same widths.

Because the gutter is formed to the exact length of each run, there are no joints between hangers, only at corners and ends. That is the main difference from sectional gutters bought in 10 ft pieces. For how the finished system goes together, see our guide to seamless gutter systems.

Suppliers also call it gutter stock or trough coil, and “5 inch coil” means coil for a 5 in. gutter, not a 5 in. wide strip.

What size gutter coil do you need for 5, 6 and 7 inch gutters?

Coil width is set by the gutter profile. A 5 in. K-style gutter takes 11 3/4 in. or 11 7/8 in. coil, a 6 in. K-style takes 15 in. coil, and a 7 in. gutter takes 18 in. coil. Check your machine’s spec sheet before buying, because the machine, not the coil seller, decides which widths will form correctly.

Gutter size Coil width Thickness offered Machine width spec (example) Source
5 in. K-style 11 3/4 in. .025 (Englert, hi-gloss white only), .027, .032 11 3/4 to 12 3/8 in. (NTM MACH II 5 in.; Englert 5 in. K-style) Englert catalog, Lynch Aluminum, Yost, New Tech Machinery
5 in. K-style 11 7/8 in. .027, .032 Same 11 3/4 to 12 3/8 in. range Service Partners, Gentek, GutterAll
6 in. K-style 15 in. .027, .032 15 in. (NTM MACH II 5 in./6 in. combo; Englert combo) Englert catalog, Lynch Aluminum, Gentek
7 in. gutter 18 in. .032 Dedicated 7 in. machine Lynch Aluminum, Service Partners

The 11 3/4 versus 11 7/8 in. split is a supplier convention, not two different gutter sizes. Both fall inside the 11 3/4 to 12 3/8 in. material width that New Tech Machinery and Englert list for their 5 in. K-style machines. New Tech Machinery documents an entry guide adjustment for when the formed lip comes out too large or too small, which is the usual fix when you change coil width or brand.

For finished gutter dimensions by profile, see our gutter dimensions spec sheet.

Gutter coil thickness: .019 vs .027 vs .032 vs .040

For gutter trough, the working choice is .027 in. or .032 in. aluminum. Thinner .019 in. stock is used for trim, flashing and downspouts, and .040 in. is a commercial gauge that is thicker than the .032 in. aluminum maximum listed for common portable 5 in. and 6 in. machines. The table shows where each gauge is used and what it weighs.

Thickness Where it is used Weight per ft, 11 3/4 in. Weight per ft, 15 in. Source
.019 in. Trim coil, flashing coil, 2×3 and 3×4 downspouts Not a gutter gauge Not a gutter gauge Lynch Aluminum; Englert catalog (.019 trim coil)
.027 in. Standard residential gutter About 0.37 lb About 0.48 lb Chappell Gutter yield table; Roofing Brief arithmetic
.032 in. Heavy-duty residential, most 6 in. and 7 in. gutter About 0.44 lb About 0.56 to 0.57 lb Chappell Gutter yield table; Roofing Brief arithmetic
.040 in. Commercial and specialty fabrication Above the .032 in. aluminum maximum of the machines below Same NTM and Englert machine specs

The step from .027 to .032 adds about 19 percent more metal per foot (.032 divided by .027), which shows up as stiffer gutter that resists ladder dents, ice and sag between hangers. It also cuts the feet you get from each pound by the same ratio. Englert’s own architectural specification lets the designer choose .032 or .027, so neither is wrong by itself. Climate, snow load, hanger spacing and what the customer is paying for decide it.

Machine limits matter more than preference at the heavy end. New Tech Machinery lists painted aluminum from .019 to .032 in. for its MACH II gutter machines, and Englert lists aluminum at .032 in. for its 5 in., 6 in. and combo K-style machines. Running .040 in. stock on those machines is outside the manufacturer’s stated range.

What alloy and temper is gutter coil?

Painted aluminum gutter coil is almost always alloy 3105 in the H24 temper. Englert’s architectural guide specification states that gutters “shall be made of 3105-H24 aluminum,” and Lynch Aluminum states its coil is made from 3105 alloy. 3105 is a manganese-bearing building sheet alloy chosen for formability and paint adhesion.

Englert’s guide specification lists a minimum tensile strength of 26,000 psi and minimum yield strength of 25,000 psi “or equivalent,” and points to AAMA 1405.1, the American Architectural Manufacturers Association specification for aluminum rain-carrying systems. Anchor Metals lists 3105-H24 to ASTM B209 with a density of 0.098 lb per cubic inch, which is the figure used for the yield math below.

If a coil seller cannot state the alloy and temper, ask for the data sheet or mill test report before you run it.

How many feet of gutter are in a coil? (with the math)

A full aluminum gutter coil of about 350 to 425 lb holds roughly 500 to 1,100 linear feet. The exact number depends on width and thickness: wider or thicker coil weighs more per foot, so a coil of the same weight runs shorter. You can calculate it from the coil’s weight in three steps.

  1. Weight per foot = coil width (in.) x thickness (in.) x 12 in. x 0.098 lb per cubic inch (3105 aluminum density per Anchor Metals). For .027 x 11 3/4 in.: 11.75 x 0.027 x 12 x 0.098 = 0.373 lb per foot.
  2. Feet per pound = 1 divided by weight per foot. For .027 x 11 3/4 in.: 1 / 0.373 = 2.68 ft per lb.
  3. Feet in the coil = coil net weight x feet per pound. A 400 lb coil of .027 x 11 3/4 in. = about 1,072 ft. Paint and packaging add a little weight, so published yields run slightly lower than bare-metal math.

The table runs that arithmetic for every common size and compares it with the yield Lynch Aluminum publishes for 350 to 425 lb full rolls. The two agree within about 4 percent, which is a useful check on any seller’s footage claim.

Coil (thickness x width) Gutter size lb per ft (calc.) ft per lb Feet in 350 to 425 lb (calc.) Lynch Aluminum published
.027 x 11 3/4 in. 5 in. 0.373 2.68 938 to 1,139 925 to 1,100 ft
.032 x 11 3/4 in. 5 in. 0.442 2.26 792 to 961 780 to 950 ft
.027 x 15 in. 6 in. 0.476 2.10 735 to 892 725 to 880 ft
.032 x 15 in. 6 in. 0.564 1.77 620 to 753 615 to 750 ft
.032 x 18 in. 7 in. 0.677 1.48 517 to 627 500 to 615 ft

Smaller rolls are sold by length. Lynch Aluminum’s mini rolls are 150 ft for 5 in. coil and 120 ft for 6 in. coil, its junior rolls are 75 ft, and all have a 12 in. center. Englert sells 150 ft boxed mini coils, and Yost sells 150 ft rolls. Lynch half rolls run 170 to 250 lb.

Worked example (Roofing Brief estimate): a 180 ft job in 6 in. .032 gutter needs 180 x 0.564 = about 102 lb of coil, or about 112 lb with a 10 percent allowance for test pieces and miters. On 5 in. .027 coil, a 150 ft job needs about 56 lb, or about 62 lb with the same allowance. Your waste factor may differ, so track it from your own jobs.

How much does gutter coil cost?

Full aluminum gutter coils were listed at $4.14 to $4.34 per pound in October 2026, or about $1,520 to $1,700 for a 350 to 400 lb coil. Converted to gutter footage, that is roughly $1.54 to $2.45 per foot depending on size and gauge. Short 150 ft rolls and cut-to-length coil cost noticeably more per foot.

Supplier (seen Oct 2026) Product Listed price Per foot of gutter (Roofing Brief math)

A&S Aluminum Supply (FL) Cut by the foot, 15 in. .027 $5.60 to $5.79/ft Same

The per-foot column is our arithmetic: listed price per pound x calculated weight per foot, or roll price divided by 150 ft. On Yost’s listings, a 150 ft roll costs about 22 to 47 percent more per foot than the same coil bought as a 400 lb full coil ($2.09 vs $1.54 for white .027; $2.32 vs $1.58 for colored .027; $2.32 vs $1.83 for white .032 x 11 3/4 in.; $2.91 vs $2.34 for white .032 x 15 in.). Cut-to-length coil runs about two to three times the full-coil rate.

Delivery changes the math. Yost, for example, lists a $495 delivery minimum plus a $75 gas charge inside its delivery area and ships full coils freight collect outside it. Distributors such as ABC Supply, Service Partners and QXO (formerly Beacon) sell coil at branch pricing that is usually quoted, not posted.

Coil is a small share of the installed price. Our seamless gutter cost per foot guide shows what homeowners pay installed by material, and aluminum gutters cost breaks that down by gauge.

Copper and steel gutter coil

Copper gutter coil is sold as 16 oz or 20 oz per square foot, and steel coil as 26 gauge painted, galvanized or Galvalume, in the same 11 3/4 to 11 7/8 in. and 15 in. widths as aluminum. Both are much heavier per foot than aluminum, and both need a machine rated for that material.

Coil Thickness Weight per ft at 11 3/4 in. Listed price (seen Oct 2026) Machine rating example Source
16 oz copper 0.0216 in. About 0.98 to 0.99 lb $11.99 to $14.99/ft (11 7/8 in.), $19.99 to $22.99/ft (15 in.), GutterAll NTM MACH II: copper 16 to 20 oz, 3/4 hard Copper Development Association handbook; Chappell Gutter table
20 oz copper About 0.027 in. (supplier listings) About 1.22 to 1.25 lb $12.99 to $17.99/ft (11 7/8 in.), $19.99 to $25.99/ft (15 in.), GutterAll Englert 5 in. and 6 in. K-style: 20 oz, 3/4 hard Chappell Gutter table; Englert machine specs
26 ga Galvalume steel 26 gauge About 0.77 lb $3.99 to $9.99/ft depending on listing, GutterAll NTM: painted steel 30 to 24 ga; Englert: up to 24 ga Chappell Gutter table; NTM and Englert specs

The Copper Development Association’s architectural handbook gives 16 oz copper as 0.0216 in. thick. GutterAll lists more than one copper coil product at different prices, so the ranges above span its listings rather than one price. For how these metals compare once installed, see gutter materials compared.

Keep metals apart. Englert’s guide specification warns against placing aluminum in contact with dissimilar metals, or where runoff from them passes over aluminum, without separation. Copper runoff onto aluminum gutters is the common case.

Polyester vs Kynar (PVDF) finishes and paint warranties

Most residential gutter coil is painted with a baked polyester finish. PVDF finishes, often sold under Arkema’s Kynar 500 resin name, are the premium tier used across architectural metal. The paint warranty you can pass on depends on the coil maker, the installer and where the house is, so read the certificate, not the brochure.

Englert says it can supply “full-strength fluorocarbon colors” from its in-house paint line, and some sheet metal suppliers stock Kynar-finished aluminum for box and half-round gutters. For K-style coil off a distributor shelf, expect polyester unless you special order.

Two warranty details trip contractors up. Englert’s finish warranty covers gutters “shaped and rollformed from Englert’s aluminum gutter coils,” so mixing brands on one job can muddy a claim. And both Englert and Kaycan exclude damage from salt or salt spray, which matters on coastal work. Field paint is a third: Kaycan’s 2025 warranty does not apply to material painted over the original finish unless Kaycan authorizes it, and Englert’s Rainpro gutter warranty excludes uneven fading and color change caused by touch-up paint. Our painting guide covers whether painting affects a coil finish warranty for other brands.

Who makes gutter coil? Makers and distributors

Painted aluminum gutter coil in North America comes from a handful of coaters, including Englert, Kaycan, Gentek and Lynch Aluminum, plus brands owned by OmniMax such as Amerimax and Berger. It reaches contractors through roofing and siding distributors and specialty gutter suppliers. Ownership below comes from company press releases or the brands’ own sites.

Distributors that list gutter coil include ABC Supply, Service Partners (which says it has over 75 branches and paints accessories in-house from the same metal as its coil), QXO (formerly Beacon, which lists Gentek and Englert coil), GutterSupply, Yost Manufacturing and GutterAll. Brand ownership changes often, so confirm with the maker before you print it on a proposal.

Gutter coil colors: matching across brands

Coil color names are not standardized between makers. “Musket Brown,” “Clay” or “Wicker” from one coater may not match the same name from another, and a weathered gutter will not match fresh coil from any brand. The safest match is coil and accessories from the same maker, checked against a physical chip outdoors.

  • Stock palettes differ. Englert lists 16 coil colors, Royal Gutter Supply stocks 18 colors of aluminum coil, Lynch Aluminum paints in 21 colors, and GutterAll lists 50+ for its 11 7/8 in. coil.
  • Two-tone coil. Englert paints each side a different color, sold as pairs such as Brown/Black, Eggshell/Wicker, Linen/Ivory, Light Gray/Musket, Cream/Clay and Dark Gray/Bronze. Flipping the coil on the reel gives a second color from one roll.
  • Siding programs. Gentek’s Color Clear Through program is built to match its siding, soffit, fascia, trim and rainware colors, though Gentek notes the same color can look slightly different across products and lighting.
  • Accessories. Service Partners says its painted accessories are made from the same metal as its gutter coil for an exact match. Mixing a different brand’s miters, end caps or downspouts is where most mismatches show up.
  • Repairs. Englert’s warranty states that color variation between replacement product and weathered original is not a defect, so set customer expectations on partial replacements.

Black, white, bronze and brown are stocked by most of the suppliers above. For choosing a color against the house, see our gutter colors chart.

How to store and handle gutter coil

Aluminum coil can water-stain if moisture gets trapped between wraps, and The Aluminum Association warns this can start in as little as one hour under extreme conditions. Store coil dry, indoors and wrapped, and let cold coil warm up slowly before it goes into a heated space, so condensation does not form inside the roll.

  1. Inspect on delivery. Check for wet or damaged wrapping and note it on the delivery papers, as The Aluminum Association’s in-plant handling guide (TR7) recommends.
  2. Warm cold coil slowly. TR7 advises holding cold metal in a cool indoor area for about 24 hours before moving it to a heated warehouse.
  3. Store indoors and away from doors. Keep coil in a heated building, away from outside doors and humid areas where temperature swings drive condensation.
  4. Leave the wrap on. Keep the original wrapping intact, and repair it if torn, until the coil goes on the machine.
  5. Watch the 20 degree rule. If the destination area is 20°F or more warmer than the coil, TR7 says to move only what you need right away.
  6. Respect machine load limits. New Tech Machinery recommends a maximum of 1,000 lb on its reel and 400 lb on its coil cradle.

On the truck, keep coil covered, dry and padded, since the painted face scratches easily.

Matching gutter coil to your gutter machine

A gutter machine forms only the coil widths, gauges and metals its maker lists. Before ordering a new width, metal or brand, check the machine’s material spec: width range, maximum aluminum thickness, steel gauge, copper weight and temper, and reel or cradle capacity. The table compares two common machine lines.

Machine Coil width Aluminum Steel Copper Source
New Tech Machinery MACH II 5 in. 11 3/4 to 12 3/8 in. .019 to .032 in. painted 30 to 24 ga 16 to 20 oz, 3/4 hard NTM product page
New Tech Machinery MACH II 5 in./6 in. combo 5 in.: 11 3/4 to 12 3/8 in.; 6 in.: 15 in. .019 to .032 in. Painted steel 16 to 20 oz, 3/4 hard NTM product page
Englert 5 in. K-style 11 3/4 to 12 3/8 in. .032 in. 24 ga 20 oz, 3/4 hard Englert product page
Englert 5 in. or 6 in. combo (Series 650) 11 3/4 in. or 15 in. .032 in. 24 ga 20 oz Englert product page

Reel size matters as well as width. NTM sells adjustable reels for 16 in. and 20 in. inside diameters, while Lynch mini and junior rolls are wound on a 12 in. center, so confirm your reel fits before buying short rolls. For how roll-formers work and what they cost, see our gutter machine guide and our best gutter machine rankings.

Which gutter coil should you buy?

For most 5 in. residential work, .027 in. aluminum in 11 3/4 or 11 7/8 in. polyester is the default. Move to .032 in. for 6 in. gutter, heavy snow, long spans or ladder-heavy service work, and use full coils once your volume justifies the cash outlay. The table maps common situations to a starting choice.

Situation Starting choice Why
Standard 5 in. K-style on a typical house .027 x 11 3/4 or 11 7/8 in. aluminum Lowest cost per foot, about 0.37 lb per ft
6 in. gutter, snow country, long spans .032 x 15 in. aluminum About 19 percent more metal per foot than .027
7 in. commercial gutter .032 x 18 in. on a 7 in. machine Width listed for 7 in. by Lynch and Service Partners
Low volume or many colors 150 ft mini rolls Less cash tied up, but about 22 to 47 percent more per foot on Yost’s listings
Steady volume in one or two colors Full coils, 350 to 425 lb Lowest listed cost per foot
Coastal or salt exposure Read finish warranty exclusions before choosing Englert and Kaycan exclude salt spray damage
High-end or historic work 16 or 20 oz copper Needs a machine rated for 3/4 hard copper
Matching new siding Coil from the siding maker’s color program Gentek and Kaycan match rainware to siding colors

How to order gutter coil for a job

Order coil by working back from the job’s linear footage to pounds, then choosing a roll size. These steps turn a measured job into an order that a supplier selling by the pound or by the roll can fill without guesswork on either side.

  1. Measure the runs. Total the linear feet; each run is formed as one piece.
  2. Add waste. Allow for test pieces and miters, using your own job history (10 percent is a common planning figure).
  3. Pick width and gauge. Use the width table and the decision table above.
  4. Convert feet to pounds. Multiply total feet by the weight per foot from the yield table.
  5. Choose roll size. Compare full coil, 150 ft roll and cut-to-length cost per foot.
  6. Confirm color by code. Order by the maker’s color name and code, including the reverse side on two-tone coil.
  7. Check the machine. Confirm width, gauge, reel inside diameter and coil weight against the machine spec.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gutter coil?

A gutter coil is a long, flat roll of painted metal, usually 3105-H24 aluminum, that a portable roll-forming machine shapes into a seamless gutter on the jobsite. Standard widths are 11 3/4 or 11 7/8 in. for 5 in. K-style, 15 in. for 6 in. and 18 in. for 7 in. gutters, in .027 or .032 in. thickness. Copper and steel coil are also sold.

How many feet is a full roll of gutter coil?

A full aluminum gutter coil holds roughly 500 to 1,100 linear feet depending on width and thickness. Lynch Aluminum lists 350 to 425 lb full rolls at 925 to 1,100 ft for .027 x 11 3/4 in., 780 to 950 ft for .032 x 11 3/4 in., 615 to 750 ft for .032 x 15 in. and 500 to 615 ft for .032 x 18 in. Mini rolls are 120 or 150 ft.

How much does a gutter coil cost?

Full aluminum coils were listed at $4.14 to $4.34 per pound in October 2026 (Yost Manufacturing, GutterSupply), which is about $1,520 to $1,700 for a 350 to 400 lb coil. That works out to roughly $1.54 to $2.45 per foot of gutter. Yost listed 150 ft rolls at $313.46 to $435.95, and cut-to-length coil ran about $3 to $6 per foot.

What size coil is needed for 5-inch gutters?

A 5 in. K-style gutter is formed from 11 3/4 in. or 11 7/8 in. wide coil. Englert, Lynch Aluminum and Yost sell 11 3/4 in.; Service Partners and GutterAll sell 11 7/8 in.; Gentek offers both. The New Tech Machinery MACH II 5 in. and Englert 5 in. K-style machines accept coil from 11 3/4 to 12 3/8 in., so either width fits those machines.

How many pounds of gutter coil do I need per foot?

Aluminum gutter coil weighs about 0.37 lb per foot at .027 x 11 3/4 in., 0.44 lb at .032 x 11 3/4 in., 0.48 lb at .027 x 15 in., 0.56 lb at .032 x 15 in. and 0.68 lb at .032 x 18 in. Multiply your job’s linear feet, plus waste, by that number. The math is width x thickness x 12 x 0.098 lb per cubic inch.

How thick is aluminum gutter coil?

Residential aluminum gutter coil is .027 in. (standard) or .032 in. (heavy duty). Englert has also listed a .025 in. high-gloss white 5 in. coil. Thinner .019 in. stock is a trim, flashing and downspout gauge, and .040 in. is a commercial gauge that exceeds the .032 in. aluminum maximum listed for the New Tech Machinery MACH II and Englert 5 in. and 6 in. K-style machines.
