CertainTeed Presidential Shingles Review: Shake vs TL vs IR (2026)

By The Roofing Brief Team | Last reviewed: October 2026

CertainTeed Presidential shingles are CertainTeed’s luxury shake-look asphalt line, and in October 2026 the company sells four versions: Presidential Shake (two layers, about 350 lb per square, UL 2218 Class 3), Presidential Shake IR (Class 4), Presidential Shake TL (three layers, about 468 lb per square, Class 4) and Presidential Solaris (a cool-roof version). Installed, they fall in the premium designer band of about $8 to $12 per square foot in our 2026 Roofing Cost Report.

Every spec below comes from CertainTeed’s own technical data sheets, sell sheets, applicator manual and the 2026 Asphalt Shingle Residential Products Limited Warranty, or from GAF and Owens Corning documents for the rivals. Where a number is our own arithmetic, the math is shown.

Key numbers at a glance

These are the figures most buyers search for: weight, bundles, exposure, impact class, warranty and installed cost. The weights and counts come from CertainTeed technical data sheets (TDS) and the 2026 roofing selection guide. The cost row uses our site baseline, because CertainTeed does not publish installed prices.

What are CertainTeed Presidential shingles?

Presidential shingles are oversized, laminated fiberglass asphalt shingles cut with sculpted, rustic tabs to look like hand-split cedar shakes. CertainTeed calls the Presidential Series “the original luxury shingle series” and classes it above its designer lines such as Landmark. The line is built around a 14 1/4 by 40 inch shingle laid at a short 4 inch exposure, which is what produces the thick, shadowed shake look.

All four current versions share the same footprint, the same 90 pieces per square and the same lifetime limited warranty. They differ in layers, weight, impact rating and color range. CertainTeed’s technical data sheets list the same core standards for each: ASTM D3462, ASTM D3018 Type 1, UL 790 and ASTM E108 Class A fire, ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H wind, ICC-ES ESR-1389 and ESR-3537, Florida Product Approval FL5444 and Texas Department of Insurance listing.

Presidential Shake Two laminated layers 350 lb Class 3 The original; widest color list; AR (algae-resistant) and non-AR versions Presidential Shake TDS, 04/25
Presidential Shake IR Two laminated layers plus a nonwoven back reinforcement 350 lb Class 4 Impact-resistant version in four colors, regional availability Presidential Shake IR TDS, 03/21; IR sell sheet, 01/26
Presidential Shake TL Three laminated layers (Tri-Laminate) 468 lb Class 4 Thickest and heaviest; six bundles per square Presidential Shake TL TDS, 04/25
Presidential Solaris Two laminated layers, solar-reflective granules 350 lb Class 3 All colors rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council for California Title 24 Presidential Solaris TDS, 07/26

Presidential Shake vs Presidential Shake TL: what does the third layer buy?

The TL adds a third laminated layer, which raises weight from about 350 to about 468 lb per square, moves the shingle from UL 2218 Class 3 to Class 4, and adds a sixth bundle per square. The size, 4 inch exposure, 90 pieces per square, nailing pattern and warranty terms are the same. The tradeoffs are structural load, stricter low-slope underlayment rules and fussier hip and ridge work.

The weight gap adds up on a whole roof. On a 25-square roof, Presidential Shake puts about 8,750 lb of shingles on the deck and the TL about 11,700 lb, against about 5,275 to 5,625 lb for CertainTeed Landmark at 211 to 225 lb per square (Landmark TDS, 08/24). That is Roofing Brief arithmetic from the published weights. CertainTeed’s manual tells contractors to confirm the structure’s load-bearing capacity before any re-roof with Presidential shingles.

Are CertainTeed Presidential shingles Class 4?

Only two versions are. CertainTeed rates Presidential Shake TL and Presidential Shake IR UL 2218 Class 4, and rates the standard Presidential Shake and Presidential Solaris Class 3. UL 2218 Class 4 means a sample survived a 2 inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking, the test CertainTeed describes on the IR data sheet. Class 4 status also depends on how the roof is installed.

The IR data sheet says the Class 4 rating applies only to a new roof or tear-off, not a roof-over, and only with Presidential Starter IR and Cedar Crest IR or Mountain Ridge caps. Chapter 16 of the applicator’s manual repeats the clean-deck and impact-resistant accessory requirement next to its Class 4 statement for IR and TL. Ask the contractor to list the starter and cap products on the contract.

Some insurers credit Class 4 roofs, and the amount varies by state and carrier. See our impact-resistant shingle insurance discount guide by state. CertainTeed’s warranty excludes hail damage, so a Class 4 rating is not a hail warranty. For how Class 4 shingles compare across brands, read our Class 4 impact-resistant shingles guide.

What colors do Presidential shingles come in?

CertainTeed’s current sell sheets list six Presidential Shake colors (Aged Bark, Autumn Blend, Charcoal Black, Country Gray, Shadow Gray and Weathered Wood), five TL colors, four IR colors and four Solaris colors. Availability varies by region, and CertainTeed flags Country Gray and Weathered Wood on the national Presidential Shake sheet as “check with your local sales representative for availability.”

Swatch bars are approximate; CertainTeed says printed and screen colors cannot match the product exactly. The applicator’s manual also describes two-color “Special Effects” layouts that alternate colors by course.

What does the Presidential warranty actually cover?

Presidential Shake, Shake IR, Shake TL and Solaris colors are “Lifetime A” products in CertainTeed’s 2026 Limited Warranty. That means a lifetime limited warranty for an individual owner living in the home, 50 years for other ownership, and a 10-year SureStart period that pays 100% of replacement shingles and labor plus tear-off, metal work, flashing and disposal for a defect. After year 10 the coverage is prorated and pays for shingles only.

Coverage Presidential (Lifetime A) Landmark (Lifetime B), for contrast Source
Warranty period, individual owner Lifetime Lifetime 2026 Limited Warranty, Table 1
Other ownership (condos, HOAs, rentals and similar) 50 years 40 years Table 1, footnotes A and B

Algae (AR versions only) 30 years, prorated after year 15 25 years, prorated after year 10 Table 1 and footnotes

The wind upgrade to 130 mph requires three things: no roof-over, CertainTeed hip and ridge caps (Cedar Crest or Mountain Ridge), and Presidential Starter at both the eaves and the rakes. Even then, CertainTeed’s wind liability is capped at the reasonable cost of hand sealing the roof, and blow-offs from unsealed strips get replacement shingles only, not labor. The 30-year algae term applies only to AR shingles installed with CertainTeed AR hip and ridge caps; otherwise algae coverage is 10 years.

How much does the warranty pay after year 10?

After SureStart, CertainTeed reduces its payment by 1/600 for every month since installation, applied to the reasonable cost of comparable shingles only. At year 40 the reduction freezes at 480/600, so the floor is 20% of shingle cost. Labor, tear-off and disposal are not paid after SureStart. The table below is our arithmetic from that formula in the 2026 warranty.

Defect found at Months elapsed Reduction Share of shingle cost CertainTeed pays Labor and tear-off
Year 1 to 10 Up to 120 None (SureStart) 100% Covered
Year 15 180 180/600 70% Not covered
Year 20 240 240/600 60% Not covered
Year 30 360 360/600 40% Not covered
Year 40 and later 480 or more Capped at 480/600 20% Not covered

Two rules matter at resale. The warranty transfers once, to the first later owner. If the house sells inside the 10-year SureStart period, the buyer gets a 50-year warranty measured from installation plus the rest of SureStart; if it sells later, coverage drops to two years from the transfer date. Shingles on an inadequately ventilated deck get a 10-year warranty and lose SureStart, unless the defect is unrelated to ventilation.

SureStart PLUS and 5-Star coverage

SureStart PLUS is an extended, registered warranty available when a CertainTeed credentialed contractor installs an Integrity Roof System (CertainTeed underlayments, starter, shingles, ventilation and hip and ridge). It stretches non-prorated coverage up to 50 years on single-family detached homes. CertainTeed’s current SureStart brochure (code 13-00-5674, dated 01/26) lists these levels:

Level Non-prorated period, single-family Materials and labor Tear-off and disposal Workmanship Other structures
Standard SureStart 10 years Yes Yes for Lifetime A shingles (warranty Table 1) No Per Table 1
3-Star 50 years Yes Yes No Limited to 25 years
4-Star 50 years Yes Yes 15 years Limited to 30 years
5-Star 50 years Yes Yes 30 years Limited to 30 years

Which star level a contractor can register depends on that contractor’s CertainTeed credential, and an earlier CertainTeed 5-Star brochure (01/21) limited 5-Star to SELECT ShingleMaster contractors. Ask for the registered warranty certificate, not a verbal promise, and read the signed terms, because CertainTeed states that no distributor, dealer or field representative can modify the Limited Warranty.

How much do CertainTeed Presidential shingles cost?

Installed, plan on about $8 to $12 per square foot of roof, or $800 to $1,200 per square, which is the premium designer asphalt range in our 2026 Roofing Cost Report. On a 25-square roof that is about $20,000 to $30,000. Contractor blog Bill Ragan Roofing cites about $8.00 to $10.00 per square foot for a Presidential Shake roof, inside the same band.

Materials are a minority of that price. Online marketplace Super Arbor listed Presidential Shake (non-AR) at $51.20 to $65.50 per bundle and Presidential Shake TL (non-AR) at $46.67 to $48.65 per bundle (listings seen October 2026). Those prices may exclude freight and change often, and local supply houses price differently. The per-square math uses CertainTeed’s bundle counts.

Item Listed price Per square or per foot Basis
Presidential Shake bundle (non-AR) $51.20 to $65.50 $256.00 to $327.50 per square (5 bundles) Super Arbor listing seen Oct 2026; our math

Installed roof, premium designer asphalt Not a retail item $800 to $1,200 per square Roofing Brief 2026 Roofing Cost Report
Installed roof, architectural asphalt (Landmark class) Not a retail item $500 to $800 per square Roofing Brief 2026 Roofing Cost Report

Three Presidential-specific line items push the installed price up. The starter course is a dedicated double-layer product: a roof with 120 ft of eaves and 80 ft of rakes needs about 200 ft, or six bundles at 36.5 ft each, about $733.50 at the listed price (Roofing Brief estimate). Each square takes 450 nails at five per shingle, or 810 on slopes over 21:12. And the 4 inch exposure means 90 pieces per square to place, against 65 for Landmark.

Compared like for like on a 25-square roof, Presidential at $20,000 to $30,000 runs about $7,500 to $10,000 more than an architectural roof at $12,500 to $20,000, matching low end to low end and high end to high end. That gap is the real price of the shake look.

How are Presidential shingles installed?

Presidential shingles go on with a five-nail pattern, a mandatory double-layer starter and a four-course diagonal offset of 5 and 15 inches, per CertainTeed’s Presidential Quick Start Guide (05/25) and Chapter 16 of its Master Craftsman Shingle Applicator’s Manual. CertainTeed says the special fastening, underlayment and flashing rules exist because of the shingles’ thickness, design and weight. Our dimensions guide shows how Presidential’s 14 1/4 x 40 inch size compares with other shingles.

  1. Check the deck and slope. The deck must be at least 3/8 in. plywood, 7/16 in. non-veneer panel or nominal 1 in. boards. Do not apply below 2:12. Tear-off is recommended and is required if two or more layers already exist; Class 4 and the wind upgrade both require no roof-over.
  2. Lay underlayment by slope. From 4:12 up, CertainTeed recommends DiamondDeck or RoofRunner, or felt meeting ASTM D226, D4869 or D6757. From 2:12 to under 4:12, use WinterGuard, VYCOR or an ASTM D1970 membrane over the whole deck (the TL allows no felt alternative). Add ice barrier at eaves wherever ice dams are possible.
  3. Install two layers of Presidential Starter. Start at the left rake or eave corner; CertainTeed does not permit starting at the right. Cut 20 in. off the first bottom piece, keep the perforated top section on the bottom layer, then remove the 2 in. perforated strip on the top layer and cut 2 in. off its first piece so joints offset. IR roofs use Presidential Starter IR.
  4. Fasten correctly. Use 11 or 12 gauge corrosion-resistant roofing nails with 3/8 in. heads, at least 1 1/4 in. long, reaching 3/4 in. into the deck or through it. Drive five nails per shingle on the painted guideline from 2:12 to 21:12. Above 21:12, use nine nails and 1 in. spots of roofing cement under each tab.
  5. Run the 5 and 15 inch offset. Course 1 is a full 40 in. shingle, course 2 is cut 5 in. (35 in.), course 3 is cut 20 in. (20 in.), course 4 is cut 25 in. (15 in.), then repeat. The alignment notches at 5 1/2 and 15 1/2 in. set the offset, and the shiplap notches hold the 4 in. exposure.
  6. Detail valleys and walls. Open valleys are recommended and closed-cut valleys acceptable; woven valleys are not recommended because the laminate can buckle. On low slopes with several penetrations, CertainTeed suggests a slater’s edge on step flashing or two beads of asphalt cement along each step shingle.
  7. Cap hips and ridges. Use Cedar Crest (12 by 12 in., 30 pieces and 20 lineal ft per bundle) or Mountain Ridge (20 lineal ft per box), each at an 8 in. exposure with two nails at least 1 3/4 in. long. Solaris uses Mountain Ridge 10 in. AR Solaris. Use AR caps to keep the 30-year algae term.
  8. Hand-seal in cold weather. CertainTeed recommends hand-sealing when cool weather or dust is likely to slow the factory sealant.

For the slope rules that apply to every asphalt shingle, see our guide to minimum roof pitch for asphalt shingles.

Two points stand out. Presidential Shake and Woodcrest are near twins on paper (same size, exposure and piece count), so the choice between them often comes down to color, contractor credentials and warranty program. And in 2026 CertainTeed raised the Landmark family’s wind upgrade to 160 mph and added unlimited wind velocity coverage for Integrity Roof Systems; Presidential is not on that list, so its upgrade stays at 130 mph. For that line in depth, read our CertainTeed Landmark shingles review. The wider designer field is ranked in our luxury asphalt shingles guide.

How long do Presidential shingles last?

CertainTeed does not publish a service life in years for Presidential shingles. It publishes warranty terms: lifetime limited for the original individual owner, with full coverage in the first 10 years and prorated, shingle-only coverage after that. Real-world life depends on attic ventilation, climate, slope and installation quality, which is why the warranty itself drops to 10 years on an inadequately ventilated deck.

The data sheets ask for little maintenance but recommend inspecting any roof at least once a year, and older roofs more often. In low-rainfall or salt-fog areas such as parts of the Southern California coast, the 2026 warranty warns that copper from AR granules can corrode aluminum gutters and recommends vinyl or copper gutters with AR shingles.

Which Presidential shingle should you pick?

Match the version to the roof’s hail exposure, structure, slope and local code, then confirm color availability with a local CertainTeed distributor. The table maps common situations to the version CertainTeed’s documents support. When none of the Presidential tradeoffs fit, a designer shingle such as Landmark gives a dimensional look at roughly two-thirds of the installed cost.

Your situation Pick Why (from the source documents)
Want the shake look, moderate hail risk, standard framing Presidential Shake Class 3, 350 lb per square, widest color list
Hail-prone area or seeking a Class 4 insurance credit, standard framing Presidential Shake IR Class 4 at the same 350 lb per square, in four colors where sold

Frequently asked questions

How much do CertainTeed Presidential shingles cost?

Installed, CertainTeed Presidential shingles typically run about $8 to $12 per square foot, or $800 to $1,200 per square, the premium designer range in the Roofing Brief 2026 Roofing Cost Report. A 25-square roof lands near $20,000 to $30,000. Bundles were listed online at $51.20 to $65.50 for Presidential Shake and $46.67 to $48.65 for Presidential Shake TL in October 2026, before freight.

Are CertainTeed Presidential shingles good?

On paper they are among the heaviest asphalt shingles sold: 350 lb per square for Presidential Shake and 468 lb for the TL, with Class A fire, ASTM D3161 Class F and D7158 Class H wind ratings, and a lifetime limited warranty that covers tear-off during the first 10 years. The tradeoffs are cost, weight, a 130 mph wind upgrade ceiling and Class 3 impact on the base Shake.

How long do CertainTeed Presidential shingles last?

CertainTeed does not publish a lifespan in years. The warranty is lifetime limited for the original individual owner, fully non-prorated for 10 years, then prorated by 1/600 per month on shingle cost only, bottoming at 20% after year 40. Actual life depends on ventilation, climate and installation; an inadequately ventilated deck cuts the warranty to 10 years.

What are CertainTeed Presidential shingles?

They are CertainTeed’s luxury, shake-look laminated fiberglass asphalt shingles: 14 1/4 by 40 inches, laid at a 4 inch exposure with sculpted tabs that imitate hand-split cedar. The October 2026 lineup is Presidential Shake, Presidential Shake IR, Presidential Shake TL and Presidential Solaris. All carry UL Class A fire ratings and CertainTeed’s Lifetime A warranty terms.

What is the difference between Presidential Shake and Presidential TL?

Presidential Shake TL adds a third laminated layer. That raises weight from about 350 to 468 lb per square, bundles from five to six per square, and impact rating from UL 2218 Class 3 to Class 4. Size, exposure, nailing and warranty are the same. On slopes from 2:12 to under 4:12, the TL requires a full ASTM D1970 membrane with no felt alternative.

Is CertainTeed Presidential TL a Class 4 shingle?

Yes. CertainTeed’s Presidential Shake TL product page and April 2025 technical data sheet list UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance. The standard Presidential Shake is Class 3, and Presidential Shake IR is the Class 4 option at the lighter 350 lb weight. CertainTeed’s manual ties the Class 4 rating to a clean deck with no roof-over and the specified starter and cap accessories.

How many bundles of Presidential shingles make a square?

Presidential Shake comes five bundles per square and Presidential Shake TL comes six, per CertainTeed’s 2026 roofing selection guide. Each square holds 90 shingles at a 4 inch exposure, so a Shake bundle holds 18 shingles and a TL bundle holds 15. The guide does not list the IR separately, so confirm its count with the supplier, and add waste for hips, valleys and cuts.
