Tuff rib metal roofing is a 36 inch wide, exposed-fastener steel panel with five 3/4 inch trapezoidal ribs on 9 inch centers, sold in 29 and 26 gauge and screwed through the flats into purlins or a solid deck. Tuff-Rib is a name many mills and dealers use, not one company’s product, so minimum slope, warranty and code paperwork change with the seller.
The pages that rank for this term are single-seller product pages. This guide lines up eight sellers’ published specs, shows where their minimum slopes disagree with each other and with the 2021 IRC, lists the Florida approvals and uplift values by screw pattern for open purlins, and works out a per-square-foot panel price from named October 2026 listings.
Tuff-Rib at a glance: key numbers
These are the figures most buyers come for. Each row is taken from a named data sheet, approval document or listing. Panel prices are an October 2026 snapshot, and steel panel prices move with coil cost and freight, so treat a local quote as the number to budget against.

What is Tuff-Rib metal roofing?
Tuff-Rib is a through-fastened steel roof and wall panel: a 36 inch wide sheet with five bell-top trapezoidal ribs 3/4 inch tall, spaced 9 inches apart, with gasketed screws driven through the flat beside each rib. It goes over open wood or steel purlins or a solid deck, and it is sold for houses, pole barns, shops and light commercial buildings.
Best Buy Metals calls Tuff-Rib its most affordable roofing system and adds an anti-siphon groove on the underlapping rib, which it says lets the panel go down to 2.5:12. Taylor Metal describes its Tuff Rib as an economical, structural, light gauge through-fastener roof and wall panel. Watson Metals notes the same profile is also sold as Classic Rib, Ag-Panel and D-Rib.
Who sells Tuff-Rib panels?
At least ten companies sell a panel under a Tuff-Rib spelling. The table below lists sellers whose own pages or data sheets we read in October 2026. They agree on the 36 inch, 3/4 inch rib geometry but differ on minimum slope, length limits and warranty, which is why the seller matters more than the name.

UL’s roof deck Construction No. 560 (Class 90 uplift, revised September 19, 2022, as filed with the Florida Building Commission) lists still more Tuff-Rib names: “Tuff-Rib” from Allsouth Pre-Engineered Components, Flatiron Steel and Long Creek Steel, “Tuff Rib” from ProTech Steel, “Tuffrib Panel” from Metalmax, “3 ft. tuf-rib” from Bridger Steel and “Ag/Tuff-Rib” from TSB Industrial. For that seller’s locations, panels and paint warranty, see our review of MetalMax. Taylor’s branches, finishes and warranty registration rules are covered in our Taylor Metal Products review.
Is Tuff-Rib the same panel as MasterRib or Classic Rib?
On paper the geometry matches: Union Corrugating’s MasterRib and Metal Sales’ Classic Rib are also 36 inch panels with 3/4 inch ribs on 9 inch centers. Ridge caps and closures often interchange, but rib shape varies slightly by mill, so test-fit closures before mixing brands on one roof. The bigger difference is which approvals and evaluation reports actually name the panel you buy.
Best Buy Metals’ paperwork shows how this works in practice. Its Tuff-Rib tech sheet lists ICC-ES report ESR-2385, which is issued to Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation and names Metal Sales panels such as Classic Rib. Its Florida approval links go to Cornerstone Building Brands approvals FL42379 and FL42382, whose evaluation documents list the trade names Imperial Rib, Stormproof, Residential and Master Rib and say any Cornerstone entity may use them. Its Miami-Dade link is NOA 22-0720.02, issued to Union Corrugating for the Master Rib panel. Metal Sales and Union both belong to Cornerstone. When a building department asks for an approval, ask the seller for the document that covers the panel on your delivery ticket.
The Cornerstone version of this panel has its own guide. See our MasterRib metal roofing guide for the plywood-deck wind tables, and our Classic Rib panel review for the Metal Sales profile.
Tuff-Rib dimensions, weight and span capacity
Tuff-Rib covers 36 inches, so each linear foot of panel covers 3 square feet and a 100 square foot roofing square takes about 33.3 linear feet before waste. Best Buy Metals’ tech sheet shows 9 inch rib spacing and an anti-siphon groove in the underlap, with panels from 5 feet to a recommended 45 feet.
Weight and stiffness rise with gauge. The allowable loads below come from the same tech sheet, calculated per the 2012 AISI specification for three or more equal spans with deflection limited to L/180. They are panel-strength values only; purlins, decks and fasteners must be designed for the same loads.
| Gauge | Weight (psf) | Inward load at 2 ft spacing | Inward at 3 ft | Inward at 4 ft | Outward (uplift) at 2 ft | Outward at 3 ft | Outward at 4 ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 29 ga (80 ksi) | 0.62 | 81 psf | 36 psf | 21 psf | 103 psf | 46 psf | 26 psf |
| 26 ga (80 ksi) | 0.79 | 105 psf | 47 psf | 27 psf | 131 psf | 59 psf | 33 psf |
| 24 ga (50 ksi) | 1.03 | 119 psf | 53 psf | 30 psf | 141 psf | 64 psf | 36 psf |
Source: Best Buy Metals Tuff-Rib technical sheet, allowable uniform loads for various fastener spacings. Loads exclude panel self weight and a 1/3 stress increase for wind. Taylor Metal’s data sheet lists 0.639 psf for 29 gauge and 0.940 psf for 26 gauge on its version.
The practical reading: at the 2 foot purlin spacing most installation guides allow for roofs, 29 gauge Tuff-Rib carries roughly four times the load it carries at 4 feet. Snow country and long purlin runs push buyers toward 26 gauge or closer framing.
Which gauge, substrate and finish should you choose?
Choose 26 gauge for a house, a high-wind site or purlins wider than 2 feet, and 29 gauge for barns, sheds and budget outbuildings on tight framing. Over a heated space, use a solid deck with underlayment rather than bare purlins. For finish, painted AZ50 Galvalume is the common choice; bare galvanized needs a G90 coating to meet the IRC.
The coating rule matters on permitted homes. The 2021 IRC Table R905.10.3(2) sets minimum corrosion resistance at ASTM A653 G-90 for galvanized steel and ASTM A792 AZ50 for 55 percent aluminum-zinc (Galvalume) steel. Best Buy Metals’ tech sheet offers galvanized in G60, G90 or G100, so a house roof should specify G90 or heavier. ICC-ES report ESR-2385 notes that under the 2024 IBC, G60 applies only to Group U buildings, such as barns and sheds.
| Choice | Fits | Watch-outs | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 29 gauge painted Galvalume | Barns, shops, sheds, carports | Thinnest steel; dents more easily; walk only on purlins | Best Buy Metals install guide |
| 26 gauge painted Galvalume | Houses, high-wind and snow sites | Costs more per sheet | Best Buy Metals and Taylor Metal data |
| Bare Galvalume (AZ55, acrylic coat) | Agricultural buildings | Keep away from treated lumber and wet concrete | Best Buy Metals tech sheet and install guide |
| Bare galvanized | Outbuildings | Specify G90 or heavier for an IRC house roof | 2021 IRC Table R905.10.3(2); Best Buy Metals tech sheet |
| Open purlins (no deck) | Unheated barns and sheds | Best Buy Metals says not to use this option over heated spaces | Best Buy Metals install guide |
| Solid deck or over one layer of shingles | Houses and re-roofs | Underlayment required; local code decides on recovers | Best Buy Metals install guide; FL42379 documents |
What colors does Tuff-Rib come in?
Color cards vary by seller, from about 16 to more than 40 colors. Best Buy Metals lists 27 painted colors, eight of them Premium Printcoat wood-grain and rust looks, plus bare Galvalume, and says its painted finishes reflect 25 to 67 percent of sunlight. JD Metals lists 23 Sherwin-Williams WeatherXL colors, Metal America lists 25 or more, and Ibex Metal lists more than 40 across Smooth, Crinkle, Print and PVDF families.
Availability also varies by branch and gauge, and Best Buy Metals notes that screen colors are approximate. Order physical samples before committing, especially for darker colors on a house.
What is the minimum slope for a Tuff-Rib roof?
The seller’s published minimum is the number to follow, and it ranges from 2.5:12 to 3:12. Best Buy Metals and Watson Metals allow 2.5:12 because of the anti-siphon groove, and Best Buy Metals adds 3/8 inch butyl tape along every lap rib below 3:12, plus a 7/8 inch lap screw at 24 inches on center. Taylor, JD Metals, Ridgeline, Live Oak and Ibex list 3:12.
The building code sets a lower floor than any seller. The 2021 IRC, Section R905.10.2, reads: “The minimum slope for lapped, nonsoldered-seam metal roofs without applied lap sealant shall be 3 units vertical in 12 units horizontal,” and “with applied lap sealant shall be 1/2 unit vertical in 12 units horizontal.” It adds that lap sealants “shall be applied in accordance with the approved manufacturer’s installation instructions.” No Tuff-Rib seller we checked publishes a sealed-lap detail below 2.5:12, so the code’s 1/2:12 floor does not help in practice.
| Slope | Code status (2021 IRC R905.10.2) | Seller status | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3:12 and steeper | Allowed without lap sealant | Allowed by every seller listed | Standard install |
| 2.5:12 to under 3:12 | Allowed only with applied lap sealant | Allowed by Best Buy Metals and Watson; below the minimum at Taylor, JD, Ridgeline, Live Oak, Ibex | Butyl tape on each lap rib and stitch screws per the seller’s guide |
| 1/2:12 to under 2.5:12 | Allowed with lap sealant per maker instructions | Not recommended by any seller checked | Use standing seam or a low-slope system |
UL ratings for Tuff-Rib
Most Tuff-Rib sellers publish the same three UL results: UL 2218 Class 4 impact, UL 790 Class A fire and UL 580 Class 90 uplift. Best Buy Metals and Live Oak list all three, and Taylor Metal lists Class 4 impact and Class A fire under its own UL Evaluation Report, ER 25913-01. A UL listing covers the tested assembly, so the deck, screws and spacing on the job should match it.
| Standard | What it measures | Tuff-Rib result | Listed by |
|---|---|---|---|
| UL 2218 | Hail impact resistance | Class 4 | Best Buy Metals, Taylor Metal, Live Oak |
| UL 790 / ASTM E108 | Fire exposure of the roof covering | Class A | Best Buy Metals, Taylor Metal, Live Oak |
| UL 580 | Uplift of the roof assembly | Class 90 | Best Buy Metals, Live Oak; UL Construction No. 560 names several Tuff-Rib makers |
| UL 263 | Fire resistance of an assembly | Per assembly | Best Buy Metals tech sheet |
UL Construction No. 560 also spells out its tested fastening: screws 24 inches on center along the panel and 9 inches on center across it, one beside each major rib, over nominal 5/8 inch plywood or 2×4 lathing at 24 inches on center. A Class 4 impact rating can qualify for insurance premium credits with some carriers; ask your insurer which listing it accepts.
Is Tuff-Rib approved in Florida, and what uplift does it carry?
Some Tuff-Rib panels carry Florida approval through the manufacturer’s product approval, not through the name. The approvals Best Buy Metals links, Cornerstone’s FL42379 and FL42382, cover a 3/4 inch, 36 inch rib panel under the 2023 Florida Building Code at roughly 30 to 146 psf allowable uplift, depending on support spacing and screw pattern. None is approved for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone.
The open-purlin entries are where the screw and support pattern change the rating most. All values below include a factor of safety of 2.
| FL entry | Panel and support | Screw pattern | Allowable uplift |
|---|---|---|---|
| FL42382.08 | 29 ga on 1×4 (min) No. 2 Southern pine wood purlins, no deck | #9 screws 1 per rib (9 in apart), rows 24 in o.c.; 1/4 x 7/8 in side-lap screws at 6 in o.c. | 138.9 psf |
| FL42382.07 | 29 ga on 18 ga (min) steel purlins at 48 in, three spans | #12 x 1 in screws 1 per rib at interior supports, 2 per rib at panel ends; lap screw 24 in o.c. | 37.7 psf |
| FL42382.07 | 26 ga on 16 ga (min) steel purlins at 60 in, three spans | Same pattern; lap screw 30 in o.c. | 47.2 psf |
| FL42379.01 | 29 or 26 ga on 1×4 purlins nailed to 15/32 in plywood | 1 per rib (Method A) or 2 per rib (Method B), rows 24 in o.c. | 76.75 to 123.5 psf |
| FL42379.02 | 29 ga on 15/32 in plywood, or 26 ga on 19/32 in plywood | 1 or 2 screws per rib, rows 12 to 30 in o.c. | 61.8 to 146 psf |
Source: FL42382.07-R0, FL42382.08-R0, FL42379.01-R0 and FL42379.02-R0 evaluation documents by David Eng, PE (Timberlake Cove, LLC), floridabuilding.org, approved December 13, 2023. Plywood-deck wind-speed tables are covered in our MasterRib guide.
Two details stand out. On wood purlins, the 138.9 psf rating depends on side-lap stitch screws every 6 inches, far tighter than the 24 inch lap spacing in most install guides. On steel purlins, uplift capacity falls quickly as purlins spread apart, per the FL42382.07 three-span table:
| Purlin spacing | 29 ga on 18 ga steel purlins | 26 ga on 16 ga steel purlins |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 ft | 100.5 psf | 157.2 psf |
| 2 ft | 75.4 psf | 117.9 psf |
| 3 ft | 50.3 psf | 78.6 psf |
| 4 ft | 37.7 psf | 58.9 psf |
| 5 ft | Not listed | 47.2 psf |
Source: FL42382.07-R0, allowable uplift for the three-span condition.
For Miami-Dade and Broward, the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, a panel needs a current Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance. The NOA Best Buy Metals links, 22-0720.02, is issued to Union Corrugating for 26 gauge Master Rib on 19/32 inch plywood at 2:12 or steeper: minus 75 psf in the field with fasteners 24 inches apart along the slope, and minus 135 psf at perimeters and corners at 12 inches. It expires September 5, 2027.
How to install Tuff-Rib metal roofing
Tuff-Rib installs over wood purlins at 2 feet on center maximum, over a solid deck with underlayment, or over one layer of existing shingles with underlayment, according to Best Buy Metals’ install guide. Screws go through the flat of the panel at every purlin, with washers snugged but not crushed. The steps below follow that guide.
- Check the structure. Confirm the roof is square and true, and avoid green or damp lumber, which can back nails out and damage panels. Keep panels away from chemically treated lumber.
- Prepare the substrate. On open framing, keep purlins at 2 feet on center maximum and skip this option over heated spaces. On a deck or over shingles, lay synthetic underlayment first.
- Set eave trim and closures. Fasten the eave trim, set inside closures to block water, insects and birds, and let the panel overhang the eave at least 1 inch as a drip edge.
- Square the first panel. Use the 3-4-5 triangle method from the eave and snap check lines about every 10 feet, roughly three panels wide.
- Fasten through the flats. Drive 1-1/2 inch double-washered wood screws beside the ribs at every purlin, two per rib at eaves, ridges and endlaps. Overdriven screws dimple the panel and hold water; fill any missed hole with a stitch screw or sealant.
- Seal low-slope laps. Below 3:12, run 3/8 inch butyl tape along the top of each lap rib without blocking the siphon channel, and stitch the lap with a 7/8 inch screw at 24 inches on center.
- Lap panel ends only when needed. On slopes of 3:12 or more, lap ends at least 6 inches, sequenced as the guide’s end-lap diagram shows.
- Finish rakes, ridge and walls. Install rake trim against uplift, then ridge, endwall and sidewall trim with closures per the trim details, and sweep off metal shavings before they rust.
Tuff-Rib screw pattern and fastener schedule
The schedule below collects fastener details from Best Buy Metals’ tech sheet and install guide and from UL Construction No. 560. Where a Florida approval or an engineer’s design calls for a tighter pattern, that document governs. Screws should extend at least 1/2 inch past the inside face of the support.

How much does Tuff-Rib metal roofing cost?
Tuff-Rib panels in 29 gauge run about $1.00 to $1.37 per square foot of coverage at two October 2026 listings, before trim, screws and freight. Installed, exposed-fastener metal roofs run $6 to $10 per square foot in The Roofing Brief’s 2026 cost report, or $12,000 to $20,000 for a 2,000 square foot roof.
| Listing | Listed price | Per linear ft | Per sq ft of coverage | Per square (100 sq ft) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tuff-Rib 29 ga painted, 3 ft x 10 ft | $29.99 | $3.00 | About $1.00 | About $100 | True Metal Supply, seen October 2026 |
| Miramac Tuff Rib 29 ga Galvalume, 8 ft | $31.39 | $3.92 | About $1.31 | About $131 | Moscow and Pullman Building Supply, seen October 2026 |

| Miramac Tuff Rib 29 ga White, 12 ft | $49.49 | $4.12 | About $1.37 | About $137 | Moscow and Pullman Building Supply, seen October 2026 |
Roofing Brief arithmetic: listed price divided by panel length, then by 3 feet of coverage. Miramac per-square-foot figures assume the 36 inch coverage standard for the profile, since the listing title does not state coverage. Best Buy Metals prices Tuff-Rib through a custom cut list and phone quote. Shipping and tax are excluded.
What does a Tuff-Rib roof cost installed?
Using the 2026 cost report’s $6 to $10 per square foot for exposed-fastener metal, a 1,500 square foot roof runs about $9,000 to $15,000 installed. The panels are a small share. That roof needs 500 linear feet of 36 inch panel, or 550 feet with 10 percent waste, about $1,650 to $2,266 at the listings above, or roughly 11 to 25 percent of the installed price (Roofing Brief estimate).
The rest goes to trim, closures, screws, underlayment, tear-off and labor. Hips, valleys and dormers add trim and cutting waste, and Florida edge and corner zones can call for twice the screws. A 3 foot by 20 foot sheet at the same $1.00 to $1.37 per square foot works out to about $60 to $82.
Tuff-Rib vs MasterRib vs Pro-Rib vs Classic Rib vs R-panel
Tuff-Rib, MasterRib, Pro-Rib and Classic Rib are the same 36 inch, 3/4 inch rib family under different names, so the real differences are the seller’s slope rule, warranty and approvals. R-panel is a different profile, with 1-1/4 inch ribs on 12 inch centers that span farther on open purlins and suit lower slopes when laps are sealed.

What are people saying about Tuff-Rib, and what goes wrong?
The common criticism of Tuff-Rib is thin steel and exposed screws, not the profile. A commenter in an r/Roofing thread titled “Quote for Tuff Rib” called it a very thin exposed fastener metal roof and recommended it for pole barns, sheds and carports, where an occasional leak matters less. Sellers, by contrast, market the same panel for homes, usually in 26 gauge or over a solid deck.
- Screw washers: every screw is a hole sealed by a rubber washer, and washers age faster than painted steel. Overdriven screws dimple the panel and pond water, per Best Buy Metals’ install guide, so periodic screw checks are part of owning the roof.
- Condensation: over open purlins, warm interior air can condense on the underside and drip. Best Buy Metals advises against direct-to-frame installs over heated spaces, and True Metal Supply sells Tuff-Rib with a factory-applied anti-condensation backing.
- Dents and foot traffic: 29 gauge dents more easily, and the install guide says to walk only on purlins when there is no deck.
- Low-slope laps: below 3:12, side laps need butyl tape and stitch screws, or wind-driven rain can travel through the lap.
How long does a Tuff-Rib roof last?
No Tuff-Rib seller publishes an expected service life, so the warranty terms are the firmest published numbers. Painted panels carry 40 to 50 year finish or substrate warranties depending on the seller, and bare Galvalume carries 25 to 45 years. Warranty length is not a lifespan prediction, and exclusions near salt water, treated lumber and standing water vary, so read the warranty itself.

Which one should you pick?
Pick 29 gauge Tuff-Rib for barns, shops and sheds at 3:12 or steeper on purlins no wider than 2 feet. Step to 26 gauge for a house, snow load or a high-wind site, and to standing seam when you want no exposed screws or a slope under 2.5:12. In Florida, buy from a seller whose approval names the panel being delivered.
| Your situation | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pole barn or shed on wood purlins at 2 ft o.c. | 29 ga Tuff-Rib, Galvalume or painted | Lowest material cost; 81 psf inward capacity at 2 ft spacing |

Frequently asked questions
What is Tuff-Rib metal roofing?
Tuff-Rib is an exposed-fastener steel roofing and siding panel that covers 36 inches with five 3/4 inch trapezoidal ribs on 9 inch centers. The name is not owned by one mill: Best Buy Metals, Taylor Metal, True Metal Supply, JD Metals, Live Oak Metal Works and others sell a Tuff-Rib in 29 or 26 gauge, screwed through the flats into purlins or a solid deck.
What is the minimum slope for a Tuff-Rib metal roof?
It depends on the seller. Best Buy Metals and Watson Metals list 2.5:12, crediting the anti-siphon groove, with butyl tape on the laps below 3:12. Taylor Metal, JD Metals, Ridgeline, Live Oak and Ibex list 3:12. The 2021 IRC, Section R905.10.2, allows lapped metal panels at 3:12 without lap sealant and 1/2:12 with sealant applied per the maker’s instructions.
What is the average price for a 3 ft by 10 ft Tuff-Rib panel?
In October 2026, True Metal Supply listed a 10 foot, 29 gauge painted Tuff-Rib panel at $29.99, which is about $1.00 per square foot of its 36 inch coverage. A Moscow and Pullman Building Supply listing for 8 foot Miramac Tuff Rib works out to about $4.12 per linear foot painted, or roughly $41 for a 10 foot length. Trim, screws and freight are extra.
How long does a Tuff-Rib metal roof last?
No seller publishes a service life, so the warranties are the best guide. Best Buy Metals’ product page lists 40 years on paint and 25 years on bare Galvalume, while its online store lists 50 and 45 years. Live Oak lists a 40-year paint film warranty and 50-year substrate warranty. Screw washers usually need attention long before the steel wears through.
Is Tuff-Rib the same as R-panel?
No. Both are 36 inch exposed-fastener panels, but Tuff-Rib has five 3/4 inch ribs on 9 inch centers while R-panel has 1-1/4 inch ribs on 12 inch centers. The taller R-panel rib carries more load on open purlins and, in Metal Sales’ ICC-ES report ESR-2385, is rated down to 1/2:12, versus 3:12 for the Classic Rib 3/4 inch profile.
Is Tuff-Rib approved in Florida?
Some Tuff-Rib panels are, through the maker’s own approval. Best Buy Metals links Cornerstone Building Brands approvals FL42379 and FL42382, which cover a 3/4 inch, 36 inch rib panel outside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone at roughly 30 to 146 psf allowable uplift, depending on support spacing and screw pattern. Ask any seller for the FL number that covers the exact panel being delivered.
What are people saying about Tuff-Rib metal roofing?
Opinion splits by building type. A commenter in an r/Roofing thread titled ‘Quote for Tuff Rib’ called it a very thin exposed fastener metal roof and recommended it for pole barns, sheds and carports. Sellers market it for homes too. The common thread is that 29 gauge steel and exposed screws suit outbuildings well, while houses often justify 26 gauge.
