Why does water run behind the gutter?

How do you fix a gap between the drip edge and gutter?
Fix the gap by matching the repair to the cause. If the parts are sound and simply spaced wrong, a metal flashing strip or reseating the gutter solves it. If the drip edge is too short, add a gutter apron. Sealant alone is a last resort and only holds where the geometry is already close to correct.
- Confirm the cause. Run a hose over the eave and watch where the water tracks. Note whether the drip edge reaches the trough and whether the gutter is level.
- Reseat a sagging gutter. Reset or add hidden hangers every 24 inches and re-pitch the run so the back wall tucks under the drip edge.
- Add a flashing strip. Slide a strip of bent aluminum flashing under the drip edge and over the back of the gutter so water sheds into the trough. This is the fastest fix on an existing install.
- Install a gutter apron. If the drip edge is too short, an L-shaped or D-style gutter apron with a longer vertical leg bridges the gap permanently.
