Metal Roof Colors in 2026: Most Popular, Energy Efficient, and Architectural Match

Metal roof colors with McElroy solar reflectance and SRI values, silver options, PVDF vs SMP paint, cool roof rules, and custom color tips.

Metal Roof Colors in 2026: Most Popular, Energy Efficient, and Architectural Match

Metal roof colors come in PVDF (Kynar 500) and SMP paint systems, and the color you pick moves solar reflectance more than the paint does: McElroy Metal’s published Kynar 500 list runs from SR 0.08 (Dark Charcoal) to SR 0.71 (Bone White). For steep-slope roofs, the industry cool-roof criteria McElroy cites are an initial SR of 0.25 and a 3-year aged SR of 0.15.

By The Roofing Brief Team. Last reviewed: October 2026. Pricing context for metal roof projects is in the cost guide; the color data below comes from maker documents, not a Roofing Brief test.

The short version

  • PVDF (Kynar 500) is the premium paint; SMP is the value paint. McElroy rates Kynar 500 “best” and SMP “better” for long life, color retention, and chalk resistance, with polyester “good” (McElroy warranty guide).
  • Cool roof colors are checked in the CRRC directory by product ID, not by color name; the same name can differ by maker, as Matte Black does (SR 0.27 in McElroy PVDF, 0.31 in McElroy SMP).
  • Silver options in McElroy’s Kynar 500 list: Silver Metallic (SR 0.57, SRI 64), Texas Silver Metallic (SR 0.58, SRI 57), and Galvalume Plus (SR 0.69, SRI 62).
  • No public dataset ranks metal roof colors by sales, so this page does not claim a “most popular” list.
  • Custom color price, minimum order, and lead time are quoted per order; get all three in writing.

Short answer: paint, palette, and pick

Three decisions stack when you choose metal roof colors:

  1. Paint system: PVDF (Kynar 500) for long color hold on a standing seam roof kept for decades; SMP for exposed-fastener panels on a barn or budget reroof.
  2. Standard vs cool vs custom: standard colors are catalog stock, cool colors carry CRRC ratings, and custom colors need a coil run with its own price and lead time.
  3. The specific color: pick by climate (a cooler SR in hot regions), architectural style, and HOA palette.

PVDF (Kynar 500) vs SMP paint systems

The paint layer sets fade resistance, chalk resistance (the white residue from UV breakdown), and chip resistance. McElroy says PVDF coatings give the best protection against fade and chalk, and its SMP page positions SMP as the economical alternative with good weathering and UV resistance.

Property PVDF (Kynar 500) SMP (silicone-modified polyester)
Performance standard AAMA 2605 AAMA 2604
McElroy rating “Best” for color retention and chalk resistance “Better,” performs well in general use
Matte Black solar reflectance (McElroy) SR 0.27, SRI 26 SR 0.31, SRI 31
Used on Standing seam Exposed-fastener corrugated, R-panel, AG panel
  • Choose PVDF for a standing seam roof you expect to keep 30 to 50 years.
  • Choose SMP for an exposed-fastener panel on a barn, garage, or budget reroof where the panel will likely be replaced before the paint fails.
  • Avoid polyester-only panels in residential use; McElroy rates polyester “good” for shade, shelter, and basic applications only.

Cool roof certification

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) tests and publishes solar reflectance (SR) and thermal emittance (TE) for rated products in its rated roof products directory. Three thresholds matter for steep-slope metal:

  • Industry criteria cited by McElroy: initial SR 0.25 and 3-year aged SR 0.15 for slopes above 2:12.
  • California Title 24 uses 3-year AGED SR, not initial. Under the 2025 standards effective January 1, 2026, the CRRC summary lists multifamily steep-slope roofs at aged SR 0.25 or SRI 23 in climate zones 10, 11, 13, and 15 and aged SR 0.20 or SRI 16 in zones 12 and 14 (Table 170.2-A); requirements vary by building type and slope (CRRC 2025 energy code summary).
  • The ENERGY STAR roof product specification was sunset on June 1, 2022, so no new ENERGY STAR roof label exists to check; use the CRRC product ID.

McElroy says cool metal roofing uses reflective pigments to reflect the sun’s energy, and cites studies of cooling savings of up to 20%. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory cool roof fact sheet says a cool roof can cut a single-story building’s annual air-conditioning energy use by up to 15%. Savings depend on climate, attic insulation, and color, so treat both as upper bounds. See standing seam metal roof cost, best roof color, and our guide to white metal roof colors compared by SRI.

Most popular metal roof colors by region

No national or regional sales dataset for metal roof colors is public, so this page does not rank colors by region. What can be checked is reflectance. This table lists McElroy’s published Kynar 500 (PVDF) values for common colors, including the silver and Galvalume options.

These are McElroy’s listed values; other makers’ same-named colors will differ, so check the CRRC product ID before you rely on a number. Unpainted Galvalume has a low emittance (0.19), which is why its SRI trails its reflectance.

Manufacturer color palettes

Every standing seam maker keeps its own standard palette. The overlap is large (everyone offers a matte black and a charcoal), but names and reflectance values differ, so compare the maker’s CRRC listing instead of the color name. For a deeper look at one family, see green metal roofing compared by maker, brown metal roof colors, and gray metal roof colors compared by SRI.

Englert

Englert’s Kynar 500 palette includes Matte Black, Charcoal Gray, Dark Bronze, and Hartford Green on its standing seam lines. Its published reflectance listing is on the Englert site; check each color there by name before ordering.

McElroy Metal

McElroy’s Kynar 500 list includes Slate Gray (SR 0.43), Matte Black (0.27), Dark Bronze (0.26), Mansard Brown (0.30), and the reds Brite Red, Colonial Red, Autumn Red, Brandywine, and Terra Cotta. It does not list a Cardinal Red.

MBCI

MBCI is a Cornerstone Building Brands company (formerly NCI Building Systems). Its PVDF standard palette includes Charcoal Gray, Saddle Tan, Hartford Green, Burnished Slate, and Patina Green; confirm which are CRRC rated on its listing.

Sheffield Metals

Sheffield Metals publishes a Cool Roof Colors card for its standing seam and exposed-fastener lines, including Cool Galvalume, Matte Black, Hartford Green, Slate Gray, and Burnished Slate. Read the current card for SR and SRI, because those values change with each chart date.

Other notable brands

  • Drexel Metals: publishes its own color chart; compare its Hartford Green with McElroy’s (SR 0.25), because the same color name differs by maker.
  • Petersen (PAC-CLAD): long-established premium PVDF brand, strong in the Midwest.
  • ATAS International: specialty matte and metallic finishes for architects.
  • AEP Span: Pacific Northwest supplier with a cool roof palette.

Color matching architectural style

Editorial pairing guide, not tested data: metal’s reflective quality and crisp seam lines suit modern, agricultural, and Mediterranean styles more than traditional colonial or Tudor. Burnished Slate is a brown-gray blend; see why Burnished Slate is a brown, not a gray.

If your style is Then consider Panel profile
Modern Farmhouse Matte Black, Charcoal, Galvalume Standing seam, snap-lock
Mountain / Lodge Dark Bronze, Hartford Green, Mansard Brown Standing seam or shake-look
Mediterranean / Spanish Terra Cotta, Colonial Red, Brite Red Stone-coated steel tile profile
Mid-Century Modern Galvalume, Slate Gray, Patina Green Standing seam, low-profile snap-lock
Contemporary Matte Black, Dark Bronze, Cool Galvalume Standing seam, mechanically seamed
Coastal Galvalume Plus, Hartford Green, Patina Green Aluminum standing seam
Agricultural / Barn Galvalume, Burgundy, Hartford Green Exposed-fastener R-panel or AG panel
Craftsman Dark Bronze, Burnished Slate, Hartford Green Standing seam or copper accent
Traditional Colonial Charcoal Gray, Matte Black (rare) Standing seam, narrow pan

Color and lifespan: which pigments fade faster

Pigment chemistry drives fade, and the paint system drives how much of it a warranty covers. McElroy’s warranty guide says Kynar 500 coatings offer the best protection against fade and chalk, and warns that fade claims are tested on a cleaned area, which often ends in a denied claim. Bright reds are the colors where makers publish separate fade data: McElroy has a dedicated Kynar 500 color fade chart for reds. For the fade terms on one family, see our guide to red metal roofing fade warranties.

Dark colors fade differently than they heat: a dark color can hold its hue while running hotter, as McElroy’s Dark Charcoal (SR 0.08) shows. Choose the paint system for color hold and the SR value for heat.

AAMA 2604 vs 2605 paint warranty

AAMA 2605 is the performance specification behind PVDF finishes and AAMA 2604 the one behind SMP. Ask the maker for the test report instead of relying on the label, and read these warranty terms before you sign:

  • Fade and chalk: McElroy Metal notes that Kynar 500 fade tests run after cleaning chalk off, so read the failure level.
  • Coastal and industrial exclusions: many warranties cut or void coverage near saltwater or heavy chemical exposure, so get the exclusion distance in writing.
  • Installation exclusions: scratched panels and unsealed cut edges can void coverage on the affected area.

Custom colors: cost and lead time

Every major maker can produce a custom color. The process: provide a paint chip or Pantone reference, the coil coating supplier (Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings, PPG Duranar, and AkzoNobel Trinar are three) formulates a match, the maker schedules a coil run, and the finished panels ship.

Item Standard color Custom color
Lead time Stock or short order Quoted per coil run; get the date in writing
Minimum order Usually none Set by the coil coater; ask for the square footage
Price premium None Quoted per job; ask for PVDF and SMP prices separately
Cool roof rating Check the CRRC directory May need its own CRRC testing, which adds time

Custom suits historic period matches and HOA colors outside the palette; Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings or PPG Duranar formulates it.

When color sample matters

A 4-inch paint chip tells you almost nothing about a roof. Three sample practices prevent regret:

  1. Get a full-panel sample (12 to 24 inches square minimum): seam profile, sheen, and panel-to-panel variation only show at full size.
  2. Hold the sample at the roof angle and viewing distance: walk to the curb and look up.
  3. View it in midday sun, overcast, and golden hour: each is a different color rendering.

A contractor should order a 12 to 24 inch sample panel on request. See how to choose a roofing contractor.

Color trends 2023 to 2026

Earlier versions of this page showed a year-by-year color share table. It cited no named source and has been removed. No public dataset tracks metal roof color share by year, and The Roofing Brief has no dealer sales data. The checkable trend is availability: matte finishes in dark colors appear in McElroy’s current Kynar 500 list (Matte Black PVDF and SMP), and cool-pigment versions of dark colors are listed with CRRC values as shown above.

Substrate matters: steel vs aluminum vs Galvalume vs zinc vs copper

The metal under the paint affects corrosion and how some colors render. Common residential substrates:

  • Galvanized steel (G90 zinc coating): standard for painted exposed-fastener panels. Englert rates galvanized roofing at 20 to 50 years depending on exposure.
  • Galvalume steel (about 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc, 1.5% silicon, per Englert): the common standing seam substrate, rated 40 to 70 years by Englert and priced 5% to 15% above galvanized of the same gauge and profile.
  • Aluminum: premium coastal substrate that does not rust.
  • Zinc (VMZINC, Rheinzink): rare, develops a natural patina, rarely painted.
  • Copper: never painted; patinas from bright penny to brown to verdigris green over years.

Specify aluminum for projects near saltwater regardless of color, and match gutters and trim to the roof substrate.

Standing seam vs exposed-fastener color tradeoffs

Standing seam metal roofs (concealed-fastener, premium category) carry the deepest Kynar 500 palettes. Exposed-fastener R-panel, AG panel, and corrugated usually use SMP paint.

  • For a residence you will keep 30+ years: standing seam with PVDF.
  • For a barn, garage, shop, or budget reroof: exposed-fastener with SMP; Galvalume, charcoal, and dark bronze are typically available in SMP.

FAQs

What color in silver metal roof are available?

McElroy’s Kynar 500 list includes Silver Metallic (SR 0.57, SRI 64), Texas Silver Metallic (SR 0.58, SRI 57), and Galvalume Plus (SR 0.69, SRI 62), plus Preweathered Galvalume (SR 0.30, SRI 27) for a darker gray-silver.

Do metal roof coatings come in colors?

Yes. PVDF (Kynar 500) and SMP paint systems come in dozens of colors; Galvalume can also be left unpainted in silver-gray. McElroy lists Kynar 500 colors from Bone White (SR 0.71) to Dark Charcoal (SR 0.08).

Is Burnished Slate metal roof color ENERGY STAR approved?

No roof product can currently carry an ENERGY STAR label, because the program was sunset on June 1, 2022. Check the product’s CRRC listing for its SR, TE, and SRI instead.

Will a black metal roof fade faster than charcoal?

Not because of its color: McElroy says Kynar 500 gives the best protection against fade and chalk across its palette. A black roof runs hotter (McElroy Dark Charcoal PVDF is SR 0.08), so pick a cool-pigment black if heat matters.

Is a matte finish more expensive than gloss?

Ask for the price in writing. McElroy lists Matte Black in both PVDF (SR 0.27) and SMP (SR 0.31), so matte is a standard catalog color, but pricing and gloss options differ by maker.

Does cool roof color void HOA approval?

No rule says so. Some HOAs have added cool colors to their palettes and some restrict them. File the maker’s color name and CRRC product ID in writing with the architectural review committee before ordering.

Will a Galvalume roof match a galvanized gutter or trim?

Imperfectly. Galvalume (aluminum-zinc) weathers differently than galvanized (zinc only), so use Galvalume gutters and trim, or paint them a coordinated charcoal or gray.

Can a metal roof be repainted later?

Yes, with compatible topcoats after a pressure wash and etch primer, but field coatings carry a shorter warranty than factory Kynar 500.

What color is best for a metal roof in Florida?

Choose by SR and SRI: McElroy lists Galvalume Plus at SR 0.69 and Regal White at SR 0.68, while dark colors like Dark Charcoal sit at SR 0.08. Cool-pigment Dark Bronze (SR 0.26) and Matte Black (SR 0.27) are middle options. Aluminum suits coastal sites.

How long does it take from order to install for a custom color?

The coil coater schedules each run, so get the maker’s delivery date in writing and order ahead of the install window.
