What is a ridge vent?

A ridge vent is a continuous exhaust vent installed over a slot cut along the roof’s peak, then covered with cap shingles or a matching metal cap. Warm attic air rises and escapes along the entire ridge, drawn upward by the stack effect while cooler outside air enters low through the soffits. Because it spans the whole ridge, it exhausts air evenly instead of at a few points. A common product rating is about 18 square inches of net free area (NFA) per linear foot, so a 20-foot ridge run yields roughly 360 square inches of exhaust.

Ridge vents have no moving parts and few exposed seams, so they need little maintenance and commonly last as long as the roof covering they sit under, often 20 years or more. What is a turbine vent (and a box vent)?

A turbine vent, sometimes called a whirlybird, is a dome-shaped roof vent with curved fins that spin when wind hits them, actively pulling air out of the attic. A box vent (also called a static, louver, or turtle vent) is a low, square hood that lets warm air escape by convection with no moving parts. Both mount on the roof field near the peak rather than along the ridge, which makes them useful where a continuous ridge cut will not work.

Turbines can move a large volume of air in a steady breeze, but they do little in still air and depend on wind to perform. Cost compared: which is cheaper to install?

  1. Long, continuous ridge with good soffits? Use a ridge vent. It gives the most even, wind-independent airflow with the least maintenance.
